This intriguing bibliographical feature suggests that a portion of the original printing remained unsold. Notably the work was never reprinted. Epistle addressed to Cardinal Richelieu. Fine allegorical frontispiece by Avice. The illustrations include a genealogical chart of the House of Orléans; two genealogical tables of the House of Luxembourg; four plates demonstrating the Marquis de Gesvre's descent from Charlemagne; a plate detailing the quarterings of the Marquis de Noirmoustier's arms; a genealogical table of the Bourbons; and 106 in-text heraldic shields approximately 10x15 cm all engraved by Pierre Nolin. Contemporary full brown calf binding. Spine with raised bands richly gilt. Surface abrasion to upper board and three wormholes. One small wormhole at the upper inner margin developing into a narrow gallery from p. 60 then gradually diminishing. Minor tear 1 cm in the outer margin of the Luxembourg genealogical plate. Lacks the preliminary blank before the frontispiece. A very attractive copy remarkably well-preserved. The Celestine convent desecrated during the French Revolution was the second royal necropolis after Saint-Denis. The tombs were distributed throughout the Orléans Chapelwhere the hearts of illustrious members of the dynasty were interred including Charles VI Philippe d'Orléans François II and Charles IXand throughout the church choir and nave which housed the remains and tombs of the Luxembourg Montmorency Lusignan and La Trémoille families. This study is especially valuable as it is the only work of its kind to document the tombs of the Celestine convent long since vanished. Converted into a timber depot after the Revolution then a barracks under the Consulate the site was partially destroyed by the opening of Boulevard Henri IV in 1866 and eventually razed entirely to make way for the construction of the new Celestine barracks sealing the fate of the monument and its precious tombs. 1897 Typed and Annotated Letter of Canadian Minister Israel Tarte to MP Duncan Graham
Ottawa Ontario Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1897. Non-Book. On offer is a typed letter written hand annotated and signed by Canadian Minister Israel Tarte. Dated September 6th 1897 this letter is on a letterhead from the Federal Minister of Public Works office in Ottawa written by Tarte in regard to a dispute between lumber and agricultural interests and suggesting he will attempt to work out a solution with some handwritten edits to Cambridge Member of Parliament Duncan Graham 1845-1934 who had just won a by-election in 1897 to Parliament his only term after a contested vote count in the 1896 Laurier landslide. Original postmarked Ministry-embossed envelope accompanies with initials J. I. T. and some anachronistic pencil writing present. Israel Tarte was a notary journalist newspaper owner and politician. Tarte came to prominence as editor of several newspapers Le Canadien L'Evénement La Patrie and the Quebec Daily Mercury. He was a Minister under Wilfrid Laurier. "The four elements that made him what he was - a francophone Catholic Canadian and British subject - sometimes led him in politics to try to square the circle." DCBThis letter measures 8 x 10 inches and includes an envelope 5-¼ x 4-¼ inches. Both items have clear crisp embossing though the letter shows signs of ink transfer from folding. The letter is age-toned with some browning edges and creases from original folds. The condition is Very Good. The envelope is torn from opening and shows signs of age-toning staining and wear. Issued in 1952 by the Labor Israel Information Bureau and the Jewish Agency for Palestines Latin American Department in New York these publications form a unified archive of early-state political communication charting the shift from revolutionary nation-building to disciplined institutional governance. The first publication is Fun der Arbet / Histadrut Neyes Labor Israel Information Bureau New York September 1952 is a six-page Yiddish bulletin reporting directly from the Israeli labor front. It describes the countrys transformation from settlement to infrastructure praising the rapid industrial growth of Beersheba and Ramla: Lives now through a period of feverish development
Beersheba is now in the very center of the country and serves as a gateway to the country of the future. The bulletin also details nationwide housing projects: The two societies together of Shikun and Noah Oved have built apartments for 100000 people. Its tone merges socialist idealism with pragmatic state-building appealing to trade-union readers in the United States to sustain the Histadruts economic and ideological mission. 1850 ORIGINAL HISTORIC MANUSCRIPT LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY A GREATLY RELIEVED FATHER THAT HIS DAUGHTER SURVIVED THE DEVASTATION OF THE BELLE OF THE WEST DISASTER
CINCINNATI CINCINATTA OHIO MISSISSIPPI VALLEY. Good. 1850. On offer is a superb piece of original correspondence from the mid-1800s in America. This 3-page letter measures 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches and is in excellent condition. The handwriting is very neat and quite legible. The author of the letter is Issac Davey a businessman from Cincinnati OH. The letter is written in May 1850 to his daughter Elizabeth. Davey was born in the early 1800s. Records indicate that he owned a clothing store in Cincinnati. He passed away in 1864. The letter to his daughter reflects his concern for her well-being and relief at knowing she escaped a major tragedy of the time. The Belle of the West was a steam-powered riverboat that plied the inland waterways of the Mississippi Valley. On Apr 22nd 1850 her boilers exploded during the night and the ship caught fire. Despite being run aground dozens of passengers lost their lives. The Cincinnati Chronicle reported the story: on Apr 23rd 1850: The public ear was startled yesterday morning by the painful rumor that the steamer Belle of the West had caught fire and had been consumed on her way to St. Louis and that some FIFTY OR SIXTY unfortunate passengers had perished in the flames! Subsequent accounts proved that the painful report was but too true. It appears from the account of those who returned to the city yesterday the Belle of the West left here on Monday afternoon for St. Louis having on board between two and three hundred passengers among whom were a large company of emigrants on their way to California. At midnight but two miles from Warsaw and about sixty two miles from this city smoke was seen issuing from the hatchway and it was discovered that he boat was on fire. At first the officers endeavored to suppress the flame without alarming the passengers; but when their efforts were found to be of no avail the pilot was directed to run the boat ashore and the passengers were aroused from their sleep and warned of their immediate peril. The scene that ensued beggars description. Passengers were seen hurrying wildly through the smoke in their nightclothes - many of them delirious with excitement and not a few leaping hopelessly into the water to escape the threatening danger of the flames. The boat was finally run ashore enveloped in flames and the passengers thus afforded escape from the awful peril that surrounded them. How many perished it is now impossible to say. The accounts represent the number as high as sixty. It is to be hoped however that this number is largely exaggerated. Elizabeth Davey was on board the Belle of the West when this occurred. Her father writes about his relief that she is safe. Note that his spelling is phonetic as was not unusual at that time. Some spelling corrections have been included to aid clarity: My Dear Daughter I received your letter I think on the eighth and was happy to hear of your safe arrival in Bellevill and was happy to hear of your provedenced providenced escape. We heard of the loss of the Bel of the West and the meny many soles souls that was hered herded into eterenty eternity. Truly do we realize the truth of Gods word that in the medest midst of life we are in death
.I thank God for amerseful a merciful providence. . p 1 You want to know something about your friends. They ware uneasey about you. Some came to enquire others ware afraid to come. They had it reported you was on the bernt burnt boat. p 3 Ameleya Walter says she wants to see you very bad. Shee says shee must wright you to come home. She says the place looks very lonesome without you. Mrs. Elsener said shee was afraid to come fearing the report to be true . p 3 His ending is very simple and clearly heartfelt: I reman remain your afecencate affectionate father until death Isaac Davey. p 3 Most interesting is the note added to the letter. It is by Elizabeth herself Yes my dear father I will meet you God being my helper where sorrow never dims the eye and parting is unknown. Glory to God never part again. Happy day. Elizabeth p3 This is a rare historical document about a widely-reported tragedy. For a historian Davey's words bring immediacy to the event and a reader can feel the emotion he must have experienced as he wrote it. Itchô Hanabusa was part of the Kan school and studied under Kan Yasunobu however he rejected this training to become a renowned painter and calligrapher. Illustrations of Japanese legends with genre scenes animals and flowers. The technique of Ukiyo-e or Japanese printmaking is very close to the original drawing since the ink drawing was affixed to a piece of wood that the engraver carved out precisely following the lines of the drawing itself destroyed in the process. SHIPPENSBURG PENNSYLVANIA PA. Very Good. 1850. On offer is a huge archive of letters notes and correspondences of an estate lawyer named J. A. McCune of Shippensburg Pennsylvania. For the most part the correspondence originates from Cumberland Franklin and Adams counties. The majority of these correspondences are information about estates. A few are orders of orphan's courts. This superb archive is a treasure trove of genealogical historical and legal history of the area. London: Blackie and Son Limited Beautifully illustrated book showing the adventures of hunting hounds 34 pages with every other page one or more colour illustrations with the story in verse. The pages instead of being printed each side are printed side by side and then folded so that the illustrations are bck to back then bound into the book the first of these has split to a length of 3 inches at the fold but been repaired internally with pasted on paper a neat repair the second page has a smaller split around ½ inch this has not been reaired. First and last couple of pages are medium to heavily foxed with just occasional spots on the other pages. Book has been professionally respined keeping the original illustrated endpapers these are browned and a triangular loss to front bottom right of endpaper 5½ iches across by 2 inches at its deepest point. Book is not dated but has previous owners details in ink on the inside front board dated 1908. outer boards are rubbed and worn on edges with boards showing through some marking.
