Illustrated with 12 engravings by George Cruikshank. Translated from the French of Le Sage by T. Smollett M.D. to which is Prefixed a Memoir of the Author by Thomas Roscoe. Gil Blas "L'Histoire de Gil Blas de Santillane" is a picaresque novel by Alain-René Lesage published between 1715 and 1735. It is often considered to be the last masterpiece of the picaresque genre. This is the first edition of Gil Blas with the illustrations by George Cruikshank. The picaresque novel is a popular subgenre of prose fiction which might sometimes be satirical and depicts in realistic and often humorous detail the adventures of a roguish hero of low social class who lives by his wits in a corrupt society. This style of novel originated in 16th-century Spain and flourished throughout Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. It continues to influence modern literature. Alain-René Lesage 1668-1747 was a French novelist and playwright best known for his comic novel "The Devil upon Two Sticks" 1707 his comedy "Turcaret" 1709 and his picaresque novel Gil Blas 1715–1735. Lesage influenced many contemporary and later writers including Charles Dickens Jonathan Swift Mark Twain Wilkie Collins and Edgar Allan Poe. Tobias George Smollett 1721-1771 was a Scottish poet and author. He was best known for his picaresque novels such as The "Adventures of Roderick Random" 1748 and "The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle" 1751 which influenced later novelists such as Charles Dickens. The illustrator George Cruikshank 1792-1878 was a British caricaturist and book illustrator praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens and many other authors reached an international audience. . ‎MALDEN AMHERST MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1918. Softcover. On offer is an original 1916 manuscript diary handwritten by Lester E. Fielding from Malden Massachusetts a senior at Massachusetts Agricultural College now UMass Amherst. Lester keeps a detailed record of every day until Oct. 2 when he declares that for efficiency a diary takes up too much time and he quits. He writes about his visits with his dear Hazel notes daily letters to her. Then Alice appears on the scene. Frat life. Lester zips around Massachusetts on "the cars" faster than today with an automobile. Lester takes Hazel to see Ethel Barrymore at the Hollis St. Theatre in Boston. In May there's lots of baseball and tennis hardly time for classes. Graduation festivities spread over several days ending June 21. On July 11 Lester goes to Fenway Park to see the Red Sox and Chicago in a double header. He's traveling all over Massachusetts and up into Vermont giving demonstrations at churches and taking orders. Aug. 7 he attends a Boston Braves game-- they beat Cinci 2-0 and 6-0. Aug. 15 he sees Red Sox beat Washington 1-0 in 13 innings. Aug. 16 he watches Red Sox beat the White Sox 5-4 in 16 innings. Aug 23 he watches Sox beat Cleveland 7-3. Aug. 25 he and Hazel take boat up the coast to Bath Maine then up the Kennebec to South Bristol. Finally he sees Sox lose to St. Louis 1-2 on Aug. 31. Note: According to MAC history Fielding served Nov. 1917-April 1919 in Military Police in AEF in World War fighting in Battle of the Marne St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne. Copy with late 18th century signature of "EX-LIBRIS MARSHALL". An old dealer has indicated the book is form the library of the famed chief Justice John Jay Marshall which I am not able to confirm or deny. "Among the prominent Dutch Hebraists and theologians was Johannes Leusden from the University of Utrecht. One of his most important studies the Philologus Hebræus editio princeps Utrecht 1656 goes far beyond a philological research of the Hebrew language and is a comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life. " An entire chapter is devoted alone to Kabbalah and the Kabbalists. For those interested in bibliography there is a pioneering section detailing the known surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Leusden also edited very important editions of the Hebrew Bible including the fames 1661 Athias edition. Contents generaly clean and tight a little browning/marking to the first and last few pages of some volumes a few pages with very small water stains to edges otherwise clean a few titles missing tissue guards to frontispiece plates; several with light silverfish damage to the edges of the endpapers and first and last few pages. Specific faults as follows: Tom Burke with some silverfish damage to the fore-edge of the frontispiece plate but not affecting image; Lord Kilgobbin missing rear free end paper; Dodd Family small strip missing from lower edge of half-title page not nearly affecting text. ‎USA 1828. This is a small archive of original handwritten fragments from the pen of Levi Bartlett. Late 1700 early 1800 - 7 pieces of paper in Levi Bartlett 1763-1828 handwriting. Levi was the son of Josiah Bartlett best known as a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Not easy to read but still legible here are some excerpts: "Ord. 3. Performance of Your Duties.our duties arise from our relations 1. to the Diety 2. Ourselves." "Vertigo by too much nerves Dimness of Sight want of nerve Double Vision too much nerve ." "a. Our duties are 1. to assist the purposes of the Diety in evolving our and others mental powers." Very interesting and certainly worthy of further research. Includes an historical narrative and short biography of Levi Bartlett as well as photocopies of various letters or decrees in Levi’s hand.
