Rare Civil War era endorsement signed by Abraham Lincoln as President. Dated March 14 1864 the endorsement reads "Submitted to the Sec. of War & Gen. Meade. A. <span class="match">Lincoln</span> March 14 1864." In fine condition. On March 14 1864 Lincoln issued an order for the draft of 200000 men to support the Union effort. Only two days prior General Ulysses S. Grant assumed command of the Union armies. Matted and framed with and engraved portrait of Lincoln and gold biographical plaque. The endorsement measures 3.25 inches by 2.75 inches. The entire piece measures 22.75 inches by 19 inches. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He led the United States through its Civil War and in doing so preserved the Union of the United States of America abolished slavery and strengthened the federal government. With some the word liberty may mean for each man to do as he pleases with himself and the product of his labor; while with others the same word may mean for some men to do as they please with other men and the product of other men's labor. Here are two not only different but incompatible things called by the same name liberty. Between 1861 and 1873 E.C. Middleton of Cincinnati published a series oval oleographic portraits intended to have the appearance of oil paintings including thirteen "Portraits of American Statesmen and Heroes." Middleton invented the method of oleography which used the process of chromolithographic printing with oil based inks mounted on canvas. The portraits were exclusively sold in frames directly through agents by subscription. In fine condition. Framed. The portrait measures 17 inches by 14 inches. Rare original Anthony Berger carte-de-visite signed by Abraham Lincoln as President; the most recognizable portrait of Lincoln which was later used as the model for the Lincoln cent. Original mounted albumen photograph double ruled in gilt with "Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries" stamp to the verso. Boldly signed by Abraham Lincoln "A Lincoln." With an additional inscription on the verso which reads "Contributed for the benefit of the S.A.S. of Westford Mass. at their Levee Dec. 14th 1864 by Mr. Lincoln." Through the use of many paid assistants renowned 19th century portraitist Mathew B. Brady produced thousands of photographs documenting the American Civil War including portraits of Lincoln Grant and both Union and Confederate soldiers in camps and battlefields. The body of work created by Brady's photographers including Anthony Berger Alexander Gardner and Timothy O'Sullivan has become the most important visual documentation of the Civil War. Taken on February 9 1864 by the manager of Brady's Washington studio Anthony Berger this the most recognizable portrait of the 16th president of the United States was later used by Victor David Brenner to create the Lincoln cent. During this same sitting Berger also took the photograph of Lincoln that would later appear on the five dollar bill. The present example was signed by Lincoln to help the Sanitary Association of Westford Massachusetts raise funds for Unions soldiers toward the end Civil War. An example at Heritage Auction brought 175000 in 2006. In near fine condition. An exceptional piece. Octavo original publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles to the spine and elaborate blind stamping to the front and rear panels. In very good condition. Ownership name. Although the debates were originally performed during the Illinois Senatorial race in 1858 they were published when both men became presidential candidates in 1860. Douglas won the race for senator but the debates were his undoing in the presidential race as Lincoln reminded voters repeatedly of the inconsistency between Douglas' principle of "popular sovereignty" in which the new territories would individually determine the status of slavery and the Dred Scott decision in which the Supreme Court declared that slavery would not be excluded from the territories by Congress. As a result Douglas was too tolerant of slavery for many northerners and not vigorous enough for Southern Democrats. Somewhat surprisingly for an attorney Lincoln did not seek Douglas' permission to publish a book of their combined speeches although Douglas was later given the last-minute opportunity--he declined--to make corrections to his own remarks" Morris 121. Rare autograph Oath of December 8 endorsement signed and entirely in the hand of the 16th President of the United States Abraham Lincoln with an exceedingly rare contemporary printing of Lincoln's Amnesty Proclamation which includes the wording of the oath itself and a rare carte-de-visite of Lincoln Providence RI: Salisbury Bro. & Co. n.d. One page the endorsement is signed and inscribed by Lincoln “Let these men take the oath of Dec. 8 1863 & be discharged – A. Lincoln Dec. 30 1863.†One page disbound the contemporary printing of the Amnesty Proclamation consists of 6 pages printed by order of the Secretary of War: E.D. Townsend Washington D.C.: War Department Adjutant General's Office February 18 1864. Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction in his annual message to Congress on December 8 1863. In the message Lincoln declared that he would offer a pardon to any man who would swear without coercion his allegiance to the Union. This provided then a general pardon to soldiers in the Rebellion and to those too who deserted the Union cause. All Southerners except for high-ranking Confederate army officers and government officials could be granted a full pardon by taking the oath and Lincoln guaranteed Southerners that he would protect their private property though not their slaves. The oath read in part “I do solemnly swear in presence of Almighty God that I will henceforth faithfully support protect and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Union of the States thereunder; and that I will in like manner abide by and faithfully support all acts of congress passed during the existing rebellion with reference to slaves so long and so far as not repealed modified or held void by Congress or by decision of the Supreme Court; and that I will in like manner abide by and faithfully support all proclamations of the President made during the existing rebellion having reference to slaves so long and so far as not modified or declared void by decision of the Supreme Court. Broadside Advertisement of Abraham Lincoln’s Birthplace The Lincoln Spring Farm.
LaRue County Kentucky August 28 1905. Rare original broadside advertisement of the bankruptcy sale of Abraham Lincoln's birthplace The Lincoln Spring Farm. One page printed broadside advertisement by L.B. Handley Special Commissioner of the LaRue County Kentucky and dated August 28 1905. The headline states "Commissioner's Sale! Of the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace." Thomas and Nancy Lincoln moved into the home in December 1808 just weeks before the birth of their son Abraham in February 1809. Only a few bidders participated and the auction was won for $3600 by a representative of Robert Collier publisher of Collier's Weekly. Other interested parties included William Jennings Bryan Samuel Gompers and Mark Twain. It was Collier who established the Lincoln Farm Association and beyond the purchase of the farm in Kentucky was instrumental in establishing the Lincoln Memorial in Washington rendering this an important stop in the nation's recognition of the life of Abraham Lincoln. In near fine condition with toning and a few small losses to the edges. Framed. The entire piece measures 12.5 inches by 23.75 inches. We all declare for liberty; but in using the same word we do not all mean the same thing. Political Debates Between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen Douglas In the Celebrated Campaign of 1858 in Illinois.
Columbus: Follett Foster and Company 1860. First edition first issue of the most famous debates in American history which cemented Lincoln as a national presidential candidate; inscribed by Lincoln in pencil to close friend Martin S. Morris and accompanied by the table from the Morris household that Lincoln signed the book on. Octavo original cloth stamped in blind. First issue with no advertisements no rule above the publisher’s imprint on the copyright page and with numeral 2 at the bottom of page 17. Association copy inscribed by Abraham Lincoln in pencil on the front free endpaper "M. S. Morris Esq A. Lincoln." The recipient Martin S. Morris was was a long-time political supporter and friend of Abraham Lincoln from Menard County Illinois. In March 1843 Lincoln wrote to Morris “It is truly gratifying to me to learn that while the people of Sangamon have cast me off my friends of Menard who have known me longest and best of any still retain their confidence in me.†Morris was selected as one of the delegates from Menard County to attend the Whig convention in Pekin in May 1843 but was detained by an illness and Francis Regnier attended in his place. The convention selected John J. Hardin rather than Lincoln as the Whig candidate for Congress from that district. In June 1852 Morris's close friend Whig Congressman and later Illinois governor Richard Yates wrote to him from Washington regarding the 1852 presidential election. The Democratic National Convention was then underway in Baltimore and after 32 ballots by the convention Yates believed the chances of receiving the nomination were against U.S. Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois unless “his almost never failing good luck may avail him.†Ultimately on the 49th ballot the Convention nominated Franklin Pierce who had received no votes until the 35th ballot. Laid in is Yates' letter to Morris which reads in part “Washington June 4 1852 Dear Morris I thank you kindly. The Democratic Convention is now in session in Baltimore. The 32nd ballot has been had and no nomination. Douglass does not appear to have as much strength as anticipated and if we were to judge from present indications the chances are against him. How far his almost never failing good luck may avail him remains to be seen. The contest between Fillmore & Scott it is now believed will be very close. Some of the knowing ones who have not much to do but make calculations say that the vote of Illinois will decide the question. We do not know how the Illinois delegation stands but we suppose nearly equal for Scott and for Fillmore. Fillmore and his friends will if necessary to defeat Gen'l Scott cast their vote for Mr. Webster. My opinion and it is only an opinion is that Gen'l Scott will receive the nomination. Of one thing I feel pretty sure that either Scott or Fillmore will be supported most cheerfully by the Whigs and what is better the Whigs here and throughout the Union have an abiding confidence that they will again gloriously triumph in November. Such was not the case at the beginning of the session. There was more or less of despondency then but the skies are bright ahead now and be the result what it may the Whigs will march up to the work with unfaltering purpose and in the confident hope of victory. Your friend Richard Yates." The Whig National Convention met a few weeks later also in Baltimore and the contest remained close between Winfield Scott and incumbent president Millard Fillmore with Daniel Webster running a distant third until Scott finally received the nomination on the 53rd ballot. In his letter to Morris Yates was confident of a Whig victory in November but Pierce went on to defeat Scott with 51 percent of the vote to Scott’s 44 percent and an overwhelming 254-to-42 victory in the Electoral College. In May 1858 Morris wrote to Lincoln that he and other Republicans in Menard County “are up and doing†and “though we are in a minority we nevertheless intend to give them the Democrats the best fight we can.†Four months later he again wrote to “Friend Lincolnâ€: "If there is any reliance to be placed on the papers which I read you are certainly making a very successful electioneering tour through the state and whether you are elected to the senate or not you certainly have reason to congratulate yourself and feel proud of the manifestations of confidence every where shown you by the people I have said and believed ever since Douglass repealed the MO. Com. That you would be his successor the first chance the people had to vote in matter that was a most rascally thing and I believe would and know it ought to politically damn him and all who had anything to do with it at least in the north. But my object is not to write a dissertation on politicks knowing well that I could say nothing But which you already know But merely to inform you by way of adding to the encouragement which I believe you are every where receiving the good news that you may calculate with a very great degree of certainty on a vote from Menard & Cass. We are glad that you have made an appointment to speak here and will endeavor to get you a large crowd." Contrary to Morris’s assurances in the race for state representative from Cass and Menard Democrat William Engle defeated Republican James W. Judy for a seat in the legislature where he dutifully voted for Stephen A. Douglas for the U.S. Senate. In September 1859 Morris was a delegate from Menard County to the Republican Congressional Convention for the Sixth Congressional District in Springfield. At the Convention Morris was elected to the District Central Committee which consisted of one delegate from each county. Among the resolutions passed by the Convention were “Resolved That the Territories of the United States are the common property of all the free white citizens of the whole Union but that the institution of Slavery has no right or heritage therein.but at the same time we strenuously oppose every attempt to interfere with slavery in the States where it now exists.†and “Resolved That Freedom is universal and Slavery sectional and cannot exist where it is not authorized by virtue of special local legislation; and that the Government of the United States in the exercise of its powers whether executive legislative or judicial is bound to adhere in substance and in form to the generous and noble spirit of these important maxims.†6 Less than a month later John Brown did “interfere with slavery in the States where it now exists†by seizing the federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry Virginia. In 1862 Morris wrote to President Lincoln on behalf of his friend Henry Clay Denison who was serving as a commissary clerk in the 14th Illinois Infantry regiment. Denison wanted a position as assistant quartermaster or assistant commissary in the army. Morris stressed that Denison was “a descendant of a good Whig family of the good old Whig state of Vermont his native place being Woodstock. He is also as good a Republican as lives and if he didn’t do as much he tried as hard as any one else to bring about your nomination &election.†President Lincoln dutifully forwarded the letter to the War Department. With Yates' June 1852 letter to Morris laid in and with the ownership inscription of Morris' great granddaughter beneath Lincoln's inscription “Property of Pauline Madgett Welton Lincoln’s signature above." Provenance: kept in the Morris family for over six generations Martin S. Morris 1816-1884 husband of Elizabeth Waggoner Morris 1820-1901; Their daughter Jane Eliza Morris Nance 1857-1927 wife of Benjamin Franklin Nance 1853-1914; Their daughter Pauline E. Nance Madgett 1879-1971 wife of William P. Madgett 1875-1951; Their daughter Pauline Helen Madgett Welton 1908-1978 wife of Claude R. Welton 1908-1978; Their son William R. Welton 1939-2014; Welton family. Ownership inscription of Pauline Helen Madgett Welton. In very good condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Exceptionally rare signed by Lincoln with no other signed copies traced at auction. Accompanied by the original pedestal table from the Morris household that according to generations of family lore Lincoln sat at with Morris signed the book and ate apples as well as an oil portrait of Martin S. Morris which hung by the table. With a letter of provenance signed by a descendant of Pauline Helen Madgett Welton attesting to the provenance of the book table and a portrait. According to Rae Katherine Eighmey Abraham Lincoln in the Kitchen: A Culinary View 2014 fellow lawyer Charles S. Zane recalled Lincoln at a circuit town inn: "There was a 'large basket of apples in the sitting room and we were invited to help ourselves. Mr. Lincoln was a great eater of apples. He said to me once that a man should eat and drink only that which is conducive to his own health. "Apples" he said "agree with me."'" p. 131 citing Zane's article in the Journal of the Illinois State Historical Society in 1921. According to Eighmey Herndon wrote of Lincoln: "He loved best the vegetable world generally.and especially did he love apples. Running as a little-known candidate for the Illinois senatorship in 1858 Lincoln challenged incumbent and Democratic leader Stephen Douglas to a series of debates. The result was a memorable chain of lively arguments in front of cheering crowds. Though Lincoln lost the senatorial race “he began collecting a scrapbook of his best speeches particularly those from the just-concluded campaign against Douglas for possible inclusion in a book. Assiduously pasting newspaper accounts of the debates into the scrapbook Lincoln cast about for a publisher. Initial efforts failed mainly because Lincoln wanted the book printed in Springfield which had no local publishing or printing facilities. Eventually however the Columbus Ohio firm of Follett Foster & Company showed interest and he began preparing the first edition… Somewhat surprisingly for an attorney Lincoln did not seek Douglas’ permission to publish a book of their combined speeches although Douglas was later given the last-minute opportunity—he declined—to make corrections to his own remarks†Morris 121. Europe. Very Good. 1978. On offer is a sensational 122 page hippie era 'Grand Tour' manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman named Linda Westergren determined to let it all hang out in the spirit of the 1970s drug sex and rock 'n roll era. Written while in her early 20s the diary is a study in hippie era travel and indulgence and the writer shares it all. The trip to Europe is with a friend and they travel around Europe staying in hostels tents and in train stations. The title page boasts: "Trip to Europe starting July 31st 1978. Written mostly on trains in depots and tents!" They meet several men smoked hashish and pot drank and drugged quite a bit and the writer describes their travels sometimes in a quite rank and salty language. She really holds nothing back. As with so many young people coming out of "the sixties" which many call the age of "irresponsible excess and flamboyance." This diary documents it well. The diary consists of handwritten pages and starts when they arrive in New York City getting ready for there adventures in Europe. Here are some snippets: 1978 "July 31st We arrived in New York about 11:00 A.M. We had to get J.'s youth hostel card downtown so we took a cab robbery. Wrong place! Got to ride the infamous subways twice even. At JFK we had a four hour layover and didn't get out till 4:00 A.M. We were the only ones awake and drinking on the plane. The day a trial in patience!" "August 2nd Arrived in Paris with one change over in Metz France at 8:30. We thought we had troubles before get a load of this! Well this time we had enough sense to exchange our money to francs but we have no idea what they're worth. By noon we were ready to come home. 99 percent didn't speak English the youth hostels are $10 a nite too much and the campsites are too far away. To top it all off we can't figure out how many francs the phone takes. We got a tip on a reasonable hotel but couldn't find the number and there is no information operator in Paris. Lugging our packs 38 pounds around no sleep really and nothing in English we were almost in tears. Well got a hold of the hotel now the subway. Naturally went the wrong way but we made it. Ah no showers. Into the sink we go showers cost more. Feel better! Went to the market and got fresh fruit bread cheese and dynamite salami. Now were getting the "franc" down
with a full stomach and soft bed J's already passed out at 7:00 and I'm close behind. Things are looking better!" Brussels Amsterdam camp site "hash" Copenhagen Tivoli "August 9th Took a train out at 11:19 P.M. last night and arrived at 8 A.M. Didn't get much sleep on the floor. The train was packed. D. was going to Oslo but decided to go with us to Stockholm. Found a camp right near the beach Camp Angby. We're really camping out this time no hostels yet. Right in the middle of evergreens over the rocks and tree roots. We washed clothes on the 4th and they never completely dried so everything was starting to smell and almost mildew. Every time we tried to hang them out it rained so today we had to wash everything all over again by hand. Thank God it was sunny. By the time that was done it was about 5:00 so we went onto Stockholm to get something to eat. We had Wienerschnitzel. I always thought that was wieners but it's veal in Swedish. Then we went on to an island where Tivoli the Swedish amusement park is. Spent the night in a discothèque. All the songs were in English. Not having much sleep the last two nights headed for camp about midnight. D. decided to stay the night so we had three in our tent. It was pretty cold so we kept even warmer." "August 13th Got up early enough to be into town by 9:00 but German's don't care to pick up hitch hikers I guess. Finally caught a ride then by tram and bus and to the depot by 9:30. Too late! The bus that goes down the Romantic Road to Fussen. Left at 9:00. All the stores are closed on Sunday in Germany so there was nothing to do. Well I decided to buy patches of all the countries we go to and sew them on my pack. Also I met a guy on a train that had a real neat lighter I wanted so I looked at all the shops in Wurzburg. Got a couple but it was still only about 1:00. J. and I decided to take a ride rather than sit in the train depot. Off to Frankfurt. No patches or lighter. Still bored!! Got on another train to Born. Nothing there but a Mac Donald's. Get this. They sold beer. So we sat in Mac Donald's and guzzled beer until we were almost drunk. An hour later got on the train to Wurzburg it's only about 4 hours and passed out. Got in at 1:00 A.M. and slept on the train depot floor until 6:00. Looking up at a German officer at that hour I thought he was going to line me up against the wall!" Zurich "August 16th After walking thru Zurich decided to go to Lucerne. Left about 2:00 and got in about 3:30 and went strait to the camp ground. Put the tent up in the mud no grass. It had been raining here too! With that done we went in their rec-room and ate. Shortly two guys from London came in and two guys from the states. They sat and drank wind and beer and ate. The British guys sounded just like B. Shit! We just drank coffee at first then broke down and bought some wine. Another international party! British are even funnier when they slur their words. J. wanted pot and never got any too bad and Mike kept wanting in our tent while J. was in theirs. But he was so loaded it reminded me too much of Evergreen. Still got to look those guys up in London." "Rode with two chicks that drove us so crazy we had to take 2 Actifed's!" "August 20th Slept till 9:30 but didn't get out of the hotel till 11:30. At least the clothes dried all but the jeans naturally. We were going to take a bus but since we didn't really know where the hell we were we decided to take another cab to the train depot and leave our packs. Found out the bullfights didn't start until 6:00 so we had 6 can't add hours to kill. Went to a fast food and had coffee and that's where we met them!! The waiter-bartenders were the nicest looking guys I think I've ever seen. None of them spoke English but we started to joke with them. We had about 4 stiff drinks and were having a good time. Some how we got it across to them that we like them. They got off at 3:00 so off we went with them to who knows where. I don't think it was either of their apts. But probably Pedro's sisters. Our affair lasted only one hour and we were off again for no apparent reason. We asked them to go to the bullfights with us but reasons unknown again wouldn't so of all places back to the train depot and strait to where they worked. We didn't want tot go up to the counter but could see all the lips flapping. It really hurt our feelings. We left without really saying goodbye and stared walking. Hailed a cab to the bullfights which was real fascinating. Only problem was being a little high at first it almost made me sick. After sobering up it was exciting! We got back to the train depot at 10:00. We were still bummed about those guys. Decided to leave them a note but the mission was never fulfilled. Wasted away too much time and ended up missing the last train and our backpacks were locked in storage and by midnight the train depot was closing. We ended up jumping a fence and another fence for a swim in the pool and about an hours worth of sleep in the grass." Barcelona Carioles Pisa Florence "August 31st Unbelievable but true when we woke up W. was with another friend waiting outside our tent since 8:00. Apologized severely for the day before and tried his best to talk us into staying. Broke camp by 10:30 and went with the guys. Stopped for groceries and back to the fucking park again!! Poor sweet S. was so bummed when we left at 1:00. Exchanged address and off to another adventure as they say! Got to Brindisi at 9:15. From a tip we went to get tickets and barely made the boat at 10:30. Met John just before boarding. When on board met she mentions many names and played 20 questions and drank till 1:00. Fell asleep on the deck to the rocking of the boat. Puke no not really." "September 7th Needless to say we missed the boat and Frank said "I told you you would." The girls needed to go into town so decided to give us a lift. It was raining again. 5 in a VW and 2 backpacks we headed down the mountain. On the way down jewel was driving and coming up on an accident she applied her brakes which had failed and ran into a taxi. Didn't do any damage to the taxi but scary had a black eye. Got the bug to the shop mid-afternoon and went to eat. With the weird schedules of the boats and buses we ended up missing the last bus and no ferries that day. By 9:00 the bug was ready and once again headed up to the campsite by 10:00. J. and I thought we'd never get off the island. Built a fire and slept by it till the boys got back at 4 A.M. They had discovered Onzo on ice. Frank was pretty bombed so I kind of gave him a shi-y time and made him sleep in his own sleeping bag. What a bad as- I am. He said he was glad to see me back though." "September 14th Didn't get up till 11:00. Got our tent up in time for it to rain. The guys walked into town and we took a bath in the ocean. Sun never did shine that day. It stopped raining long enough to wash our clothes in the ocean I might add and to take a sh-t. Gathered wood and tried to build a fire. Made rice and meat etc. with ocean water and couldn't eat it. Too salty. All in all the day was a disaster also. The island has no trees! We call it "Skull Island." "A note to myself. I take this vow today the 7th of November to be back in Europe within 2 years!!!" Her friend decides to head home back to the states and she stays awhile longer with the new friends she's met. Association copy inscribed by the author to close personal friend Henry Ford and his wife Clara "To Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford Sincerely Charles A. Lindbergh." Lindbergh developed a long-term friendship with Ford who was well known for his newspaper The Dearborn Independent also known as The Ford International Weekly. The paper reached a circulation of 900000 by 1925 second only to the New York Daily News largely due to a quota system for promotion imposed on Ford dealers. Lawsuits regarding anti-Semitic material published in the paper caused Ford to close it and the last issue was published in December 1927.Lindbergh too gained a reputation as an anti-Semite with the publication of a controversial Reader's Digest article in November 1939 and a series of nationwide radio addresses criticizing the Roosevelt administration for attacking Germany. In late 1940 Lindbergh became spokesman of the non-interventionist America First Committee soon speaking to overflow crowds at Madison Square Garden and Chicago's Soldier Field with millions listening by radio. President Franklin Roosevelt publicly decried Lindbergh's views as those of a "defeatist and appeaser" comparing him to U.S. Rep. Clement L. Vallandigham who had led the "Copperhead" movement that had opposed the American Civil War. Lindbergh promptly resigned his commission as a colonel in the U.S. Army Air Corps writing that he saw "no honorable alternative" given that Roosevelt had publicly questioned his loyalty. In 1927 the year of the present volume's publication Charles Lindbergh flew his Spirit of St. Louis to Ford Airport in Dearborn Michigan. Upon arrival Henry Ford accepted Lindbergh's invitation for a ride. Though Ford had been invested in aviation since 1909 this was his first trip in an airplane. Laid in is a Western Union telegram dated August 15 1947 from Clara Ford to Irving Imoberstag the husband of Clara Ford's niece Frances Imoberstag nee Bryant. Near fine in the original dust jacket which is in very good condition. A remarkable association copy. We is the autobiography of the famous flier Charles A. Lindbergh written almost immediately after his famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris on May 20-21 1927. This historic flight by Charles Lindbergh took him from being a little known US Postal Service Air Mail pilot and made him into one of the most famous if not the most famous person in the world. The main impetus for the flight was the $25000 Orteig Prize offered by the French-born New York hotelier Raymond Orteig. He offered the prize to be awarded to the pilot of the first successful nonstop flight made in either direction between New York City and Paris. The book which was also soon translated into most major languages remained at the top of best-seller lists well into 1928 with more than 650000 copies sold in the first year and earned Lindbergh more than $250000. The book's great commercial success was considerably aided by its publication coinciding with the start of his three-month tour of the United States in the Spirit on behalf of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The nation became obsessed with Lindbergh during the tour in which he was seen in person by more than 30 million Americans a quarter of the nation's then population. Lindbergh written almost immediately after his famous flight across the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris on May 20–21 1927. This historic flight by Charles Lindbergh took him from being a little known US Postal Service Air Mail pilot and made him into one of the most famous if not the most famous person in the world. The main impetus for the flight was the $25000 Orteig Prize offered by the French-born New York hotelier Raymond Orteig. He offered the prize to be awarded to the pilot of the first successful nonstop flight made in either direction between New York City and Paris. The book which was also soon translated into most major languages remained at the top of best-seller lists well into 1928 with more than 650000 copies sold in the first year and earned Lindbergh more than $250000. The book's great commercial success was considerably aided by its publication coinciding with the start of his three-month tour of the United States in the Spirit on behalf of the Daniel Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics. The nation became obsessed with Lindbergh during the tour in which he was seen in person by more than 30 million Americans a quarter of the nation's then population. With the book label of the physician and botanist Thomas Bell Salter. Of the utmost rarity. At the age of 19 Lindley was taken under the wing of William Jackson Hooker who at that time was still living in Halesworth before his move the following year to Glasgow. Lindley was impressed with a book he found in Hooker's extensive botanical library - Richard's "Demonstrations botaniques ou Analyse du Fruit considere en general" of 1808. He translated the work into English working for three days non-stop. When published it included six plates from Lindley's original drawings. The title page claims it includes the author's latest corrections and Stearn points out that the preface rejects Linnaeus' system of classification in favour of the the natural orders of Jussieu. This is the first book and the first published illustrations of the "father of modern orchidology" - one of the most importand and dominant figures of Victorian botany. First Edition. Boards. Good. The case is partially and lightly discolored with a light stain at the head of the first board of the case handsome copy. Title page dedication leaf pp 506 ii with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate a little age-toning generally endpapers unevenly browned but otherwise very clean internally bound in full contemporary polished calf slight wear at the corners joints cracking slightly lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work. At the end of this volume is a list of "Editiones operum auctoris" including the Amoenitates with the clear implication that Linnaeus is the author. Of great importance for "Potus Theae" in which Pehr Tillaeus discussed among other things the properties and benefits of tea as a medicine. Tillaeus's dissertation was the first in-depth botanical study of the tea bush and he also named parts of the plant. The tea plant had only been introduced to Sweden and Europe generally as recently as 1763. Also includes Hoffman's "Potus Chocolatae" - a botanico-medical essay on the merits of drinking chocolate flavored with vanilla. Botanical accounts are given of the cacao tree Theobroma cacao L. and of the vanilla orchid Epidendrum vanilla L. = Vanilla fragrans. The preparation of the chocolate beans and of the beverage by the Spaniards is described. Linnaeus advocated use of the beverage as a pleasant drink and for treatment of hypochrondria and hemorrhoids. Other essays include : Gahn's "Fundamenta Agrostographiae" - a classified list of grasses of economic importance preceded by a history of prior studies of grasses. Laurin's "Menthae usus" - an essay on the kinds of mints useful in medicinal preparations. Lado's "Motus polychrestus" - an essay on the importance of physical exercise as a preservative and restorative of good health. Tengborg's "Hortus Culinaris" - an essay on edible and economic plants of Sweden their culture and hardiness. Includes those then in use and others suggested. Backmann's "Fundamenta ornithologica" - an exposition of the fundamentals of Linnaeus' classification of birds. Uddman's "Lepra" - An overview of leprosy including hypotheses about causes types of leprosy possible treatments. Aphonin's "Usus historiae naturalis" - An essay on the importance of a knowledge of natural history to greater improvement of agriculture and horticulture with emphasis on those kinds of plants best suited as food for each kind of domestic animal. Osterdam's "Siren lacertina" - an account of the two-legged Siren lizard of South Carolina sometimes known as the Carolina mud iguana. Berlin's "Usus Muscorum" - an historical study of the economic uses of lichens in Sweden including Lapland. Roos' "Mundus Invisibilis" - a medico-botanical treatise on airborne spores and microorganisms some of which Linnaeus believed to be responsible for infectious diseases. Blad's "Fundamenta entomologiae" - an historical review of entomology with a list of 32 pre-Linnaean authors instructions on how to collect and preserve insects and the fundamentals of their classification. Wedenberg's "Varietas ciborum" - a medico-nutritional essay on the wide range of foodstuffs eaten by man and a classification of these foods into 10 groups and the effects of diets in which each group dominates and the diseases which might result.
