Light marginal spotting not touching image otherwise in very fresh fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants. This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris. The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan. He said that he had crossed a country that is apart from its name entirely unknown to Europeans and therefore everything was worth describing Voyages dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte pendant les campagnes de Imprimerie Impériale unknown

NATURAL HISTORY volume botany: These engravings show the scientific genius of French scholars at work on Egyptian soil preparing it to become a French colony. This colonizing project in gestation since the reign of Louis XIV was accompanied with Bonaparte's arrival by an in-depth study of fauna and flora through the work of the greatest naturalists mineralogists entomologists of the time. The Description de l'Egypte reveals the entirety of this immense scientific enterprise through its engravings after drawings by members of the Academy of Sciences including Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hillaire Alire Raffenau-Delile or Henri-Joseph Redouté. According to the words of Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire ""Nous avons recueilli les matériaux du plus bel ouvrage qu'une nation ait pu faire entreprendre. MACROBIUS
Macrobii Ambrosii Aurelii Theodosii viri consularis & illustris in Somnium Scipionis libri II. Eiusdem Saturnaliorum libri VII. Ex vetustissimis manuscriptis codicibus recogniti & aucti. Edited by Joach. Camerarius.
Basel Basileae Ex officina Ioan. Hervagii 1535. Cum privilegio Caesaris ad quinquennium. Folio. XL3342 p. Vellum 30 cm Ref: VD16 ZV 20513; Schweiger 2586: the first mentioned copy with the privilegium and the corrections. 'Neue schätzbare Recension von Joach. Camerarius nach 2 Handschriften'. Dibdin 2220: 'under the care of the celebrated Camerarius and by the help of several important MSS. there was hardly a verse in the poets quoted but what received very considerable emendation. . A volume thus intrinsically valuable will not fail to find a purchaser at a reasonable price'; Ebert 12716; Graesse 4330 Details: Later vellum 18th century. Brown morocco shield on the back. 2 thongs laced through both joints. Large printer's mark of Hervagius Johann Herwagen the elder on the title and a different one on the verso of the last leaf both depicting a three headed Hermes on a pillar. Woodcut initials 8 woodcuts and a woodcut map of the world in the text Condition: Some small and almost invisible repairs of the vellum. Corners of the shield on the back partly gone. Title browning paper yellowing some slight foxing. Wormhole in the right uppercorner of ca. 80 p. not coming near any text. Pastedowns affected by a few small unobjectional wormholes Note: Ambrosius Theodosius Macrobius a Roman senator and a classical scholar of the early 5th century A.D. 'was a notable link between the cultures of antiquity and the Middle Ages'. This edition contains his 2 most important works the 'Saturnalia' and his 'Commentarii in Somnium Scipionis' the 'Dream of Scipio' a commentary on a part of 'De Republica' of the Roman orator Cicero. The 'Saturnalia' is a learned compilation in 7 books cast in dialogue form in which the cultural life of the former generation is idealized. Macrobius' aim is to provide his son with all the necessary hard to come by scientific knowledge. He did so in the form of a banquet. Macrobius was inspired by the Ciceronian dialogues 'De Oratore' and 'De Republica'. 'Set during the Saturnalia of 383 it gathers several conspicuously non-Christian members of the aristocracy and their entourage to discuss matters ridiculous . and sublime . above all the poetry of Virgil. Quarried from mostly unnamed sources - including Gellius Seneca Plutarch and the tradition of scholastic commentary today known from Servius the discussion presents Virgil as the master of all human knowledge'. More influential in the Middle Ages and Renaissance was the commentary of Macrobius on the 'Somnium Scipionis'. Macrobius uses Cicero's text De Republica 610 ff as the starting point for a thoroughly Neoplatonic treatment of especially cosmology and the soul's ascent to the One with direct debts to Porphyry and Plotinus.' Discussed are matters of mathematics physics cosmology astronomy geography and ethics. He thus forged a kind of compendium of science and philosophy which transmitted classical knowledge to the medieval world and was to hold a central position in the intellectual development of the West during the Middle Ages. His books belong to the basic sources of the scholastic movement and of medieval science. His work left traces in the works of Dante Chaucer Vives and Spenser. Source for M. and the quotations: 'The Classical Tradition' Cambr. Mass. 2010 p. 553. § Joachim Camerarius 1500-1574 holds one of the foremost places among the German classical scholars of the 16th century. Gudeman calls him even 'der bedeutendste Philologe Deutschlands im 16. Jahrh.' Grundriss der Geschichte der klassischen Philologie Lpz. 1909 p. 216 He held professorships at Nuremberg Tübingen and Leipzig. 'His numerous editions of the Classics without attaining the highest rank are characterized by acumen and good taste'. Sandys 'History of Classical Scholarship' 2 p. 266/67 Camerarius was a man of vast knowledge. He also wrote on history theology mathematics astronomy and paedagogy. He seems to have been just the man for editing the encyclopaedic works of Macrobius. Camerarius had evidently a high opinion of himself and his talents. Such we gather from the following distich on the titlepage: 'Qui tamen et nostri numerum vult scire laboris annumeret versus totius ille libri' i.e. he left his mark in every line of verse in Macrobius. This book contains furthermore an interesting Macrobian map a map which for a 1000 years formed the basis of world geography. It was first printed in 1482 showing the continents in the 'Alveus Oceani' a big Europe and a rather small Africa and Asia. The round map is typically divided in 5 climatic zones. It shows the pre-Renaissance view of the world Antipodeans and all. Our map shows the awakening of the passion for exploration and the cartographic progress in this period. Africa and Asia have grown hugely and Europe has shrunk considerably. The lines of the climatic zone on the first map of 1482 were straight suggesting a flat earth on our map the lines are convex indicating a world which is really a round ball. And the Antipodean part has gone. No sign however of America. The literature on the development of the Macrobian world view is immense Provenance: On the front flyleaf in pencil '7 januari 1961' written by the Flemish linguist Walter Couvreur 1914-1996 who was an Orientalist and professor of Indoeuropean linguistics at the University of Gent. It indicates the date of aquisition. The place of acquisition he wrote on the flyleaf at the end: 'Turijn Bottega d'Erasmo' Collation: alpha - beta6 gamma8 a-z6 A-E6 Photographs on request hardcover

This epistolary novel with educational purpose influenced by Rousseau's thinking on pedagogy was written by Madame de Genlis in 1781 and published in 1782 very shortly after her appointment as governor of the children of the Duke of Chartres one of whom the Duke of Valois is the first prince of the blood the future Louis-Philippe. The interest of this work many times republished and translated into several languages throughout the 19th century lies in the association of two educations one for girls and boys of aristocratic origin the other for a prince whose governor does everything to make him an enlightened monarch. Madame de Genlis whose features are found in the main character of the novel Madame d'Almane affirms the legitimacy for mothers to conduct the education of their children according to a line of conduct associating moral principles and access to knowledge equally recognized for girls and boys. Mademoiselle de Clermont recounts the authentic passion of young Marie-Anne de Bourbon-Condé princess of the blood for a duke whom her social rank forbids her to marry. In this true story reported to the author no facility such as love at first sight the outpouring of amorous language. The short story is brief effective stripped of all artifice. Right from the start this sumptuous publication was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society Françoise Tétart-Vittu La Gazette du bon ton in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016 and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot known as Cochin later used in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils heightened in colors some highlighted in gold or palladium. The story began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of the world involved in fashion he had already been part of the fashion magazine Femina decided with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff the sister of Jean creator of Babar to set up the Gazette du bon ton subtitled at the time: Art fashion frivolities. Georges Charensol noted the reasoning of the editor-in-chief: In 1910 he observed there was no really artistic fashion magazine nothing representative of the spirit of the time. My dream was therefore to make a luxury magazine with truly modern artists
I was assured of success because when it comes to fashion no country on earth can compete with France. Un grand éditeur dart. Lucien Vogel in Les Nouvelles littéraires no. 133 May 1925. The magazine was immediately successful not only in France but also in the United States and Latin America. At first Vogel put together a team of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt as well as eventually his friends from school and the School of Fine Arts like George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Charles Martin. Other talented people soon came flocking to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Chalres Martin Maggie Salcedo. These artist mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel sought them out later became emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. It was also they who worked on the advertising drawings for the Gazette. The plates put the spotlight on and celebrate dresses by seven designers of the age: Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provided exclusive models for each issue. Nonetheless some of the illustrations are not based on real models but simply on the illustrators conception of the fashion of the day. The Gazette du bon ton was an important step in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic demands with the physical whole it brought together for the first time the great talents of the artistic literary and fashion worlds; and imposed through this alchemy a completely new image of women: slender independent and daring which was shared by the new generation of designers including Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas and so on
Taken over in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast the Gazette du bon ton was an important influence on the new layout and aesthetics of that little dying paper that Nast had bought a few years earlier: Vogue. Lucien Vogel éditeur unknown

Madeleine-Angelique de GOMEZ
Les journées amusantes
à Amsterdam: Par la compagnie 1766. Fine. Par la compagnie à Amsterdam 1766 9.50 x 16.50 cm 8 tomes reliés en 4 volumes Eighth edition statement illustrated with eight unsigned frontispieces. Les journées amusantes were originally published from 1722 to 1731. Title pages in red and black. Contemporary full blonde sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Lacks to upper joints at head of volumes I and IV. Lack to headcap of volume III. Tail headcap of volume IV split. Some corners slightly bumped. Despite the noted defects the set is in good condition overall. A prolific author Madame de Gomez achieved great favor in Europe with Les journées amusantes which were undoubtedly one of the bestsellers of the period. These journées are similar in structure to Boccaccio's Decameron and to Marguerite de Navarre's Heptameron. Composed of 18 days within which six narrators tell stories. What characterizes the writing of the Journées amusantes is the encyclopedic and erudite richness characteristic of the work which ultimately worked against it over time; it aimed with a certain deliberate archaism to pay homage to 17th-century French gallant literature. MAE McLOUTH
1913 - 1940 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY AND JOURNAL OF A YOUNG WOMAN'S TRAGIC STORY OF HER MOTHER'S EARLY DEATH A FATHER'S LOSS OF LOVE A TREACHEROUS AUNT AND A CARNIVAL THAT LEADS TO COCAINE AND CRIMINALITY
Buffalo New York NY. Fair. 1913. On offer is an extraordinary original manuscript journal detailing the beginning and up to the almost ending of a young 13 year old girl whose life turns so tragically with the death of her mother in early 1913 the loss of her father's love and the steady and not too slow descent into drugs and all manners of criminality. Using a 14.5 x 10.5 inch scrapbook our author Mae McLouth b. April 25th 1899 who inscribes the book with instructions for its delivery after her death to a friend. In all there 47 or so pages fully written with her story plus a few pages of genealogical notes and other writings pertinent to her family. The story of her life is all too tragic and certain: a mother's untimely death a father unable to recover older siblings with no care a treacherous aunt who delivers her to a convent an escape and then joining a carnival she escapes further. Soon after she is taking cocaine 'dope' discussing needles 'hypos' and within a few pages she is in prison. She does a short essay on the differences between cocaine and morphine and paints a real picture of early 20th Century drug culture and drug abuse and of course the consequences. Life continues along the same vein many years but then in the last entry dated 1940 written 3-4 years since the entry before she was not great dating entries where we read with some relief that she and her husband Joe are now settled have a trucking and moving business and rent out rooms. She seems to have made up with some of her siblings too. A happy ending but very unexpected given the depth of her self abuse. The large folio book has covers detached front cover present back cover absent. The pages are brittle on the edges but so far there is no loss.
