De Nederlandse regering in ballingschap in Londen had behoefte aan het instellen van dapperheidsonderscheidingen voor krijgsverrichtingen waarvoor de Militaire Willemsorde in wezen niet verleend kon worden. Zo werd in 1940 het Bronzen Kruis ingesteld in twee gradaties met en zonder eervolle vermelding. Deze onderscheiding werd verleend aan militairen maar later ook aan koopvaardijpersoneel en andere burgers die hiervoor in aanmerking kwamen. De Bronzen Leeuw werd in 1944 ingesteld als vervanger van het Bronzen Kruis met eervolle vermelging waardoor de Bronzen Leeuw na de Militaire Willemsorde de belangrijkste Nederlandse dapperheidsonderscheiding werd gevolgd door het Bronzen Kruis. In deze uitgave worden alle gedecoreerden Bronzen Leeuw en Bronzen Kruis genoemd met details met betrekking tot hun rang functie en legeronderdeel. ‎This Knight's Cross recipient was a Luftwaffe ace who scored all of his victories on the Western Front -- 54 downed enemy aircraft in more than 250 combat missions. TLS in German heavy stock 8¼" X 5 3/4" Munster Germany 24 September 1997. Addressed to M.K. Schmidt. Near fine. On a correspondence card the right side of which bears a 3½" X 5" reproduction of a well-known WW2-era head-and-shoulders portrait of Meimberg in uniform wearing his Knight's Cross Meimberg writes to an American admirer. Below his portrait on the right side Meimberg signs boldly in blue ink. With original envelope. Though a small format letter accomplished later in life the content is exceptional and being typed alongside a likeness of Meimberg in his prime the presentation is superb. Meimberg offers "reminiscences about a time that lay more than a half century behind us." He mentions musing about fallen comrades offers some serious thoughts about his thinking as group commander of the II Jagdeschwader 53 Pik-As group when he was 27 years old "At the time it was clear to me that the war for Germany was lost. I hoped for a political solution." and remarks how he knows today that war is always the result of failed politics. He bemoans the fate of his generation but is pleased that a war among European nations is unthinkable today and that other peoples might learn from their history. Head-title speakers' names and shoulder- and footnotes in red. One full-page and two three-quarter-page woodcut borders 8 and 8a along with numerous 10- 6- and 3-line initials all designed by Morris engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.<p>Tells the tale of Sidonia von Borcke the Pomeranian noblewoman who was tried and executed for witchcraft in 1620. Lady Wilde's translation was 1st published in 1849. Morris wrote that "Sidonia was based more or less on fact concerning the Witch Fever that afflicted Northern Europe during the latter half of the 15th and 1st half of the 16th centuries and was a great favorite with the more literary part of the pre-Raphaelite artists who include William Morris and Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones . D.G. Rossetti in particular was an enthusiastic admirer." In early 1892 Aubrey Beardsley produced a frontispiece drawing of Sidonia. Morris's rejection of the illustration caused great indignation in Beardsley. Forman pp. 168 & 220. Bleyswyck it depicts a cartographer busy drawing a map; in the foreground 2 nymps one handles instruments of the cartographer the other inspects archaeological remains. Numerous engraved illustrations in the text. The folding map of the world is after A.P. Bertius. The first 320 pages contain the text and commentary. The rest of the book is filled with the annotations of earlier important scholars Condition: Vellum age tanned. All 4 decorative silk fastening ribbons gone. Tiny bookseller's label on the front pastedown. Note: Pomponius Mela a geographer from the South of Spain wrote in 43/44 AD. under Claudius the first surviving work on geography in Latin. Pomponius is foremost a writer: distances directions and other useful information for sailors or travellers is lacking. His work was meant for a educated and curious Roman public. It was known in the Middle Ages and in the following centuries he was read at school. § The Dutch scholar Jacobus Gronovius 1645-1716 lived in the shadow of his famous father Johannes Fredericus Gronovius professor Greek of the Unverstiy of Leiden till his death in 1671. His son Jacobus was appointed professor of History and Greek in 1679. He is best known for the 13 volume set 'Thesaurus Antiquitatum Graecarum' which he edited 1697-1702. This industrious scholar produced editions of Tacitus Gellius Herodotus Polybius Livius Ammianus Harpocration and Stephanus Byzantinus and the 'editio princeps' of Manetho. Gronovius' first edition of Mela Pomponius is of 1685. He published a revised edition with commentary in 1696. Abraham Gronovius 1695-1775 the son of Jacobus Gronovius produced in 1722 a new 'Variorum' edition of Mela Pomponius based on the edition of his father. In 1748 Abraham Gronovius published a second and augmented edition of this work. About this second edition Abraham tells us in the preface that the Luchtman brothers asked him to produce a new 'Variorum' edition and that he based his edition again of that of his father. 'In ipso Pomponii Melae contextu constituendo Paternam editionem secutus sum nisi venustiores ac nitidiores codicum MS. lectiones me alio vocarent'. Lectori p. 3 verso/4 recto of this 1782 edition He consulted 11 manuscripts including one of his one. He also added notes from earlier important editions. Jacobus Perizonius and Carolus Andreas Duker also gladly send him their own unpublished annotations. Idem p. 5 recto This Mela Pomponius edition of 1782 called the third edition is a reissue of the second edition of 1748. The preface of 1748 is repeated in this 1782 edition. § Abraham Gronovius was librarian at Leyden University from 1741 until his death. He produced editions of the 'Historiae Philippicae' of Justinus and two editions of Aelianus. He showed interest in geographical matters. He published at Leyden in 1739 his 'Varia Geographica' and in 1752 a school edition of Mela which offers a Latin text only Provenance: The manuscript prize is awarded to young 'Gerhardo Gelinio Brons' on the occasion of his promotion from the 3rd to the 2nd grade for his diligence. The date is September 4 1783 and signed by the 'curatores' of the 'Schola Latina' at Schiedam C.J. Bosschaert W. Jager Jacobus van Eijk and the Rector Johannes van Laar. Gerhardus Gelenius Brons age 17 enrolled as a student at the University of Leiden in 1785. ‎PICKWICK MINNESOTA. Good. 1880. On offer is an outstanding record of a family living in rural Minnesota in the late 19th century. This leather-bound diary measures 6 inches by 3 inches and contains 183 pages plus memoranda pages. It is 100% complete. The diary is in very good condition The handwriting is small but legible. The author of the diary is Mrs. C.L Grannis who lives in Pickwick MN in 1880. Her husband is Cyrus Lansing Grannis. Research has determined that her name is Melissa M Grannis neé Woods. She was born in 1824 on December 12th as noted in the diary in Vermont. She married Cyrus Grannis in Massachusetts. They had one son - Frankie who died in 1858 at age 4 noted in the diary on January 12. Melissa Grannis passed away in 1904 at age 79. At some point they moved from Massachusetts to Iowa where their son died. They moved to Minnesota to the village of Pickwick. This was wilderness country and the living conditions were very hard. Melissa Grannis is 55 years old the year she kept this diary. The entries paint a detailed picture of life in this cold northern wilderness. Many entries include a short proverb or scripture quote. "Our new cow came today. Two boys drove her from Galesville - were here to dinner - Cordelia rode up stayed an hour or so Harry Agnes and Allen came down to show Allen's first suit of boys clothes which his Grandpa Gould sent him. Karen in a moment. G. brings me this diary for New Years present. I cut off my first Calla Lilly sent to Abba for New years gift. Susie up to call. Allen staid to dinner" Jan 1; "Snows wind blows all fore noon - Sun shines in P.M. I bake all fore noon Callie in I send Nellie her backs for S.S. - "Without economy some can be rich & with it few can be poor." "The parent who does not teach his child a trade teaches him to be a thief." Jan 9; "Twenty two years since our dear Frank died. ." Jan 12; "Cyrus goes to Winona to take up our old cow. Rather hated to see her go after all got little over $27.00 for her. Lizzie Hoffman in to see about flowers for a cross for tomorrow. Agnes came down to get pieces for the patch work. Stays until after school closes some of my class come to recite pieces - grows cold all the time" Mar 11; "Pleasant - pure air - They work on the mill today for fear of rain. Seems bad to hear the sound of hammers on God's holy day but they think it duty to take care of what they have left. S.S. at 10' o'clock 29 scholars present. Ella comes in early. I call there on my way from S.S. Susie gets dinner & supper. Seems good to have help. Mrs. Harlo Rutherford comes in to see if I will let her boy come & pick berries for me. Bessie Davis calls. They go home send Ella a rose by Nettie & Lou" June 13. Simple activities could lead to serious injuries and even death: "Mr. Renwick starts home to night. Cool cloudy & little thought this morning what was to happen & how much we have to be thankful for. G. & I started for W. Winona in buggy. When at Minnies house Lorens horse set to kicking and we were thrown from the buggy down in the brush. My wrist was hurt some but how narrow to escape. Is it a warning to us that Gods ways are part finding out how well it is that God hides the future. Mrs Martins also Mr. George Eagles were very kind to me. I staid at Mr. Martins." Aug 16; "Fall through side walk when in Clayton did not hurt me much." Sept 16. She notes the presence of the Winona Guards. The Winona Guards was one of the first of the handful of organized militia companies which were revived after the Civil War. They were the foundation for the Minnesota National Guard. "Cloudy. Mrs. W children staid to breakfast. The "Winona Guards" came this morning marched to pipe & drum. A city of tents. Mrs. Whitney came over to take biscuits for their dinner. Mrs. Simpson & Mrs. Flirst called to bid us good by as they all go this P.M. Ida Howe calls in P.M. Campers leave sorry to see them go as they are all pleasant. The "Guards" are under military rule. March. Can see them quite plain. Evening C. goes over to see them. …" Aug 23. Even in a small village in rural Minnesota she is well aware of events in the larger world: "Pleasant. Great excitement today as it is "Election Day." Will soon be known who is to be President next March. " Nov 2. James Garfield won. This was also her husband Cyrus' 55th birthday. In her cash accounts she kept a careful record of expenditures and these provide an excellent indication of the daily costs of living. For a historian this is an excellent primary-source document. It is well written and quite detailed. The cash records she kept would certainly help a social historian researching living circumstances at this time. A genealogist would appreciate the many references to friends and neighbours in this small community.
