Beautifully bound in half green leather over marbled boards spines in six compartments separated by raised bands gilt lettering in two compartments gilt borders in remainder gilt borders on covers marbled endpapers and edges. Generously illustrated with 102 woodcuts. Translated by Thomas Johnes Esq. Enguerrand de Monstrelet c. 1400 - 1453 was a French chronicle writer and author of the Chronique de Enguerrand de Monstrelet. He was born in Picardy most likely into a family of the minor nobility. In 1436 and later he held the office of lieutenant of the gavenier at Cambrai and he seems to have made this city his usual place of residence. He was for some time bailiff of the cathedral chapter and then provost of Cambrai. Little else is known about Monstrelet except that he was present not at the capture of Joan of Arc but at her subsequent interrogation with Philip the Good duke of Burgundy. Continuing the work of Froissart Monstrelet wrote a Chronicle which extends to two books and covers the period between 1400 and 1444 when according to another chronicler Mathieu d'Escouchy he ceased to write. But following a custom which was by no means uncommon in the Middle Ages a sequel extending to 1516 was formed out of various chronicles and attached to his work. Monstrelet's own writings dealing with the latter part of the Hundred Years' War are valuable because they contain a large number of documents which are certainly and reported speeches which are probably authentic. Full title: The Chronicles of Enguerrand De Monstrelet; containing an Account of the Cruel Civil War between the Houses of Orleans and Burgundy; of the Possession of Paris and Normandy by the English; Their Expulsion thence; and of other Memorable Events that Happened in the Kingdom of France as well as in Other Countries. A History of Fair Example and of Great Profit to the French beginning at the Year 1400 where that of Sir John Froissart finishes and ending at the year 1467 and continued by others to the year 1516." . Monteath is described as 'Forester to His Majesty' but he seems an elusive figure and i can find nothing about him; he is not even included in Desmond's Dictionary. With the armorial bookplate of Edward Machen; born as Edward Tomkins Davies in 1783. He was the first of what might be termed the modern Deputy Surveyors of the Forest of Dean. He became the longest serving Deputy Surveyor 1808 to 1854 and had a significant impact upon the landscape structure of the Forest that we know today. He changed his name to Edward Machen in 1816 after inheriting Eastbach Court from his Uncle and at that point he assumed his Uncles surname. He had oversight of the Forest from the time of the Dean Forest Timber Act of 1808 and with the support of Lord Glenbervie Surveyor General of Woods he set about the landscape scale enclosure and planting of the Forest with oak. He established Whitemead Park as the principle offices of the Office of Woods in 1814 and where he lived after moving from Eastbach Court. He was in charge at the time of the Warren James Riots of 1831 and was an important member of the Parliamentary Commission that sat in the years after the riots. That Commission was responsible for key aspects of the Deans cultural landscape the regularisation of squatter cottages and the regularisation of mining. After retiring Edward was elected as a Verderer in 1860. He was a recognised and influential figure in the community. Third edition. Cloth. Good. There must be a errata sheet at the end of volume I a detail which attests to the first issue of this second edition. Although rare this counterfeit is much easier to find that the earlier 1748 edition which was mainly sold in England. Son of the illustrious actor Montfleury and like him attached to the Hôtel de Bourgogne his first plays were farces around 1660 then producing about one play per year he evolved toward satire and social criticism. He was a rival of Molière who had mocked his father in L'Impromptu de Versailles to which he responded with L'Impromptu de l'Hôtel de Condé but while Molière drew his manner from Italian theater Montfleury freely drew inspiration from Spanish theater; his comic theater is not a comedy of characters but a satire of contemporary society. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Both boards with tenfold blindstamped fillet borders within blindstamped floral borders a blindstamped wave/flood pattern in the central panel Condition: Cover shows wear to the extremes. Lacking the half-title before the title with the text: 'The world before the flood with other occasional pieces' Note: James Montgomery 1771-1854 was a British poet philanthropist and campainer for humanitarian causes. He achieved some literary fame with 'The wanderer of Switzerland' in 1806 against the annexation of that country by the French. The abolishment of slavery is the theme of his 'The West Indies' published 3 years later. He created a reconstruction of the world from the creation to the Deluge in his 'The world before the flood' published in 1812. The author states in his preface that he is 'under obligation of no other authority whatever'. Cologne: Chez Jean Sambix 1663. Fine. Chez Jean Sambix Cologne 1663 7.50 x 12.50 cm 2 volumes reliés First complete edition of these memoirs which had appeared in expurgated form the previous year. The second volume extremely rare and almost never found together with the first volume of the memoirs appeared in 1665. Volume I bears no volume indication on the title page volume II does; the publisher indeed deemed it appropriate after the fact to provide a sequel to the Memoirs by gathering various pieces. Contemporary full brown sheep bindings. Spine with raised bands decorated in the 19th century pastiche in shagreen. The Count of Montresor Claude Bourdeille was a seasoned conspirator and we see him conspiring in all periods against Richelieu against Gaston D'Orléans during the Fronde. He interested himself in all sorts of secrets and his memoirs as well as the pieces contained therein are rich testimony to this from 1632 to the early years of the Fronde.
