On ornate "Office of the Mayor" letterhead the newly-elected mayor comments on the best-known event of his reign just after its occurrence: ".I am sending along now a photograph of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and myself taken at one of the functions when Her Majesty was in Ottawa prior to Her Majesty's visit to the United States in October 1957." ‎MILTON CAYUGA HAMILTON ONTARIO ONT ON UPPER CANADA. Good. 1872. On offer is a super archive of nine 9 original manuscript diaries very full and descriptive of the rural life and times in and around Milton in south-central Ontario. Dated 1872 through 1883 missing 1873 1880 and 1882 the author while unidentified in fact we suggest his name is Nelson Green. There are a number of references to the Green family and some ephemeral clues that local historians genealogists and collectors of the Milton Cayuga and Hamilton Ontario area should no doubt be able to confirm his identity. The author leads the simple yet extraordinarily hard life of a church going farmer lumber and quarryman with a horse charmingly named "Timber". Nelson does a very good job mentioning the names of visitors business contacts and the births and deaths and other local events faithfully. He does not live in Milton proper but almost daily he travels there to deliver wood or ice in winter or stone or apples etc. Sometimes he'll make the trip to Hamilton or Cayuga and another number of smaller places like Six Ridges New Celedon Burlington Beach Brontey sic Harvey's Mill Flamborough. ‎This most renowned of British naval heroes is almost as famous for his scandalous open affair with one of the most famous and beautiful women in England the married Emma Hamilton despite having lost most of his teeth the use of his right eye and his right arm in various military successes; his nautical victories against the French made him Napoleon's nemesis; killed aboard his ship "Victory" in the battle of Trafalgar. ALS 1p 7" X 8¼" Burnham 1793 February 2. Addressed to "Gentlemen." Near fine. A boldly penned and handsome example of Nelson's scarce right-handed penmanship four years prior to losing his right arm in a July 1797 battle and having to learn to write left handed. Rather cryptic financial content reading in full: "I am glad to hear You did not bring our trust money into the Lands as they had risen so very much. I shall be in Town on tuesday Evening & shall probably see Mr. Creed on Wednesday therefore please to let the money Remain in your hands 'till you hear farther from my Brother or myself. I am Your Very Humble Servant." Page & Creed were Nelson's bankers so the reference to Mr. Creed almost certainly refers to that firm. This choice and scarce letter has been handsomely displayed under a pale green matte with gold filigree alongside a stunning 6½" X 8¼" hand-colored steel engraved portrait of "Horatio Viscount Nelson" engraved by W. Finden and "From the original of Hoppner in / His Majesty's Collection." This early 19th century portrait is in fine condition and bears a large incredibly ornate hand-colored decorative border; it depicts Nelson almost full-length in full military regalia with his empty right sleeve pinned to his chest. This pair is framed under glass in a 1" contemporary walnut frame overall dimensions 21" X 15". A superb presentation -- Nelson in his most desirable that is right-handed form. unknown‎

This edition is a socalled Variorum edition an edition which contained everthing a student required. Such an edition offers the 'textus receptus' which is widely accepted accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of specialists taken from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Editions like these 'cum notis Variorum' were useful but never broke new ground. The production of this kind of editions was the specialty of Dutch scholars of the 17th and 18th century. The compilers seldom were great scholars but often hard working schoolmasters. The Dutch schoolmaster who skillfully excerpted compared and contrasted the material of brighter minds is Augstinus van Staveren 1704-1772. He was rector of the schola latina at Leiden since 1750. He is known for this edition of Nepos which saw several later editions and his 'Auctores Mythographi Latini' which was published in 1742. The frontispiece or rather the copper plate for this frontispiece and the text engravings which belong to this edition have a long history. The same plates were used for almost 150 years by different publishing firms. The plates were first used for by Hackius edition of 1658 and then the reissue of 1675. The next users were the Blaeu brothers in 1687 thereupon probably Mortier in 1704 not seen by us then Janssonius van Waesberge in 1705 and then by Samuel Luchtmans who seems the last owner in 1728. The minor edition left out the learned commentaries but offered a revised text accompanied by critical and historical notes of Van Staveren which often contain material found by him in Greek sources. Van der Aa 172 p. 966/67 The frontispiece and the engravings in the text have a long history. The copper plates for them were first used in 1658. They were used again in editions of 1675 1687 1704 1705 1728 1734 1773 and finally here in 1793 Provenance: in pencil on the verso of the front flyleaf: 'A. Roozendaal 1944'. We found one 'A. Roozendaal Amersfoort' in the tabula gratulatoria of the Festschrift 'Studia varia Carolo Guilielmo Vollgraff a discipulis oblata' Amsterdam 1948 p. 194. After we had found this a small receipt ticket of a restaurant in Amersfoort dated 20/3/55 fell out of this book; at the back a note on Van Staveren apparantly made the same Roozendaal now an elderly person; A. Roozendaal was probably a student of C.W. Vollgraff professor of Greek and Archaeology of the University at Utrecht. It was produced by the young Dutch scholar R. Keuchenius 1636-1673 who matriculated in 1654 and was later in life appointed professor of Roman History of the 'Athenaeum Illustre' at Amsterdam. The edition of 1658 was revised and augmented by an anonymous editor and republished in 1675 by the same Hackius brothers. The preface of Keuchenius to the edition of 1658 and the testimonia was repeated but now anonymously. The anonymous editor seems to be Keuchenius for the main body of his work and his own notes have been preserved. In a short 'ad lectorem' Keuchenius in 1658 and anonymous in 1675 the editor explains that he based his edition on those of Lambinus and Longolius and that he passim added selected observations of Gifanius Savarus Schottus Boeclerus Gebhardus Ernesti and Bosius. He also elucidated the Lives with passages from ancient Greek historians like Herodotus Thucydides Xenophon and Plutarch. The edition of 1675 became the model of a line of clones including the frontispiece and illustrations. It was reprinted 'verbatim' line by line page by page with the same layout and the same kind of typeface by the Blaeu brothers in 1687 probably Mortier in 1704 by Janssonius van Waesberge in 1705 by Wetstein in 1707 this edition and by Samuel Luchtmans in 1728 Provenance: On the frontispiece: 'B.L.W. An ancient editor added to this collection the lives of M. Porcius Cato and of Pomponius Atticus the friend and correspondent of Cicero. Already in late antiquity this collection was ascribed to the grammarian Aemilius Probus and the editio princeps of 1471 bears his name. In his edition of 1569 the French classical scholar Dionysius Lambinus proved on stylistic grounds that this work must have been written by the contemporary of Cicero Cornelius Nepos alone. Schweiger mentions numerous editions. The German scholar and historian Caspar Gottschling 1679-1739 is the author of a great number of publications. He used many pseudonymes among which Carolus de Gaule or Charles de Gaule. Since 1710 he was Rektor of the Gymnasium of Neustadt Brandenburg. Best known are his editions of the school authors Nepos Pliny Cicero and Horace. In 1717 he published in Halle his German translation of Nepos. This was followed by his edition of Nepos with a commentary in German. Wellknown is also his contribution to the Land of Cockaigne legend Der Staat von Schlaraffenland which he published in 1710. This is Johann Joseph Ignaz von Döllinger 1799 - 1890 who 'was a German theologian Catholic priest and church historian who rejected the dogma of papal infallibility. He is considered an important contributor to the doctrine growth and development of the Old Catholic Church though he himself never joined that denomination'. He was educated in the gymnasium at Würzburg and then began to study natural philosophy at the University of Würzburg where his father held a professorship. Walther Hermann Nernst 1864 -1941 Was A German Chemist Known For His Work In Thermodynamics Physical Chemistry Electrochemistry And Solid State Physics. His Formulation Of The Nernst Heat Theorem Helped Pave The Way For The Third Law Of Thermodynamics For Which He Won The 1920 Nobel Prize In Chemistry. He Is Also Known For Developing The Nernst Equation In 1887. He Wrote His Thesis At Graz Where Boltzmann Was Professor Though He Worked Under The Direction Of Ettinghausen. They Discovered The Nernst Effect: That A Magnetic Field Applied Perpendicular To A Metallic Conductor In A Temperature Gradient Gives Rise To An Electrical Potential Difference. Next He Moved To Würzburg Under Kohlrausch Where He Submitted And Defended His Thesis. Ostwald Recruited Him To The First Department Of Physical Chemistry At Leipzig. Nernst Moved There As An Assistant Working On The Thermodynamics Of Electrical Currents In Solutions. Promoted To Lecturer He Taught Briefly At Heidelberg And Then Moved To Göttingen. There He Wrote A Celebrated Textbook Theoretical Chemistry Which Was Translated Into English French And Russian. He Also Derived The Nernst Equation For The Electrical Potential Generated By Unequal Concentrations Of An Ion Separated By A Membrane That Is Permeable To The Ion. After Eighteen Productive Years At Göttingen Investigating Osmotic Pressure And Electrochemistry And Presenting A Theory Of How Nerves Conduct He Moved To Berlin And Was Awarded The Title Geheimrat. In 1905 He Proposed His "New Heat Theorem" Later Known As The Third Law Of Thermodynamics. He Showed That As The Temperature Approached Absolute Zero The Entropy Approaches Zero - While The Free Energy Remains Above Zero. This Is The Work For Which He Is Best Remembered As It Enabled Chemists To Determine Free Energies And Therefore Equilibrium Points Of Chemical Reactions From Heat Measurements. Nernst Became Friendly With Kaiser Wilhelm Whom He Persuaded To Found The Kaiser Wilhelm Gesellschaft For The Advancement Of The Sciences With An Initial Capital Of Eleven Million Marks. Nernst's Laboratory Discovered That At Low Temperatures Specific Heats Fell Markedly And Would Probably Disappear At Absolute Zero. This Fall Was Predicted For Liquids And Solids In A 1909 Paper Of Albert Einstein's On The Quantum Mechanics Of Specific Heats At Cryogenic Temperatures. Nernst And Planck Lobbied To Establish A Special Professorship In Berlin And Nernst Donated To Its Endowment. In 1913 They Traveled To Switzerland To Persuade Einstein To Accept It; A Dream Job: A Named Professorship At The Top University In Germany Without Teaching Duties Leaving Him Free For Research. In 1911 Nernst And Max Planck Organized The First Solvay Conference In Brussels. Nernst Was Active In Scientific Projects In Support Of Wwi; Both His Sons Were Killed At The Front. In 1918 After Studying Photochemistry He Proposed The Atomic Chain Reaction Theory. It Stated That When A Reaction In Which Free Atoms Are Formed That Can Decompose Target Molecules Into More Free Atoms Would Result In A Chain Reaction. His Theory Is Closely Related To The Natural Process Of Nuclear Fission. In 1920 He And His Family Briefly Fled Abroad Because He Was One Of The Scientists On The Allied List Of War Criminals. Later That Year He Received The Nobel Prize In Chemistry In Recognition Of His Work On Thermochemistry. He Was Elected Rector Of Berlin University For 1921-1922. He Set Up An Agency To Channel Government And Private Funds To Young Scientists And Declined Becoming Ambassador To The United States. Later He Was A Vocal Critic Of Adolf Hitler And Nazism And Two Of His Three Daughters Married Jewish Men.
