Giangiorgio Trissino wrote a tragedy and three canzoni in a form approximating Pindar's practice Luigi Alamanni modelled his hymns on the Pindaric ode Ronsard wanted to be the French Pindar introducing the Pindaric ode into the vernacular literature of France. The French author Voltaire made the witty remark that Pindar wrote verses that no one understood and everyone had to admire. For Thomas Gray Goethe and Hölderlin he was a genius. § This Pindar edition of 1590 is based according to Hoffmann Graesse & Ebert on the Greek text of the edition of 1560 produced by the French scholar/printer Henri Estienne Henricus Stephanus. Stephanus published a second 1566 and third edition 1586 all three containing in addition to the Greek text a Latin translation of the odes but the 1560 edition is to be preferred because the Greek text is according to Dibdin the most correct. Plantin published a reissue of the Greek text of this 1560 edition earlier in 1567. Greek text only Provenance: On the front pastedown in pencil: '18 april 1961' written by the Flemish linguist Walter Couvreur 1914-1996 who was an Orientalist and professor of Indoeuropean linguistics at the University of Gent. It indicates the date of aquisition. The place of acquisition he wrote on the flyleaf at the end: 'Utrecht Beijers veiling Wille'. On the front flyleaf an illegible name and 'J. Wille 10 febr. 1928'. J. Wille 1881-1964 was professor of Dutch literature and linguistics and at the same time librarian of the protestant Free University at Amsterdam. His specialty was 18th century Dutch literature and an excessive buyer of books. His books were auctioned by Beijers at Utrecht on the 23rd 26-27th april 1961. Benoist was a doctor of medecin and it is said of German origin. He was appointed on the recommandation of the great Greek scholar Isaac Casaubon the King's professor of Greek at the protestant Academy of Saumur. A year before Benoist had published in Saumur an edition of Lucian also with his Latin translation. His Latin translations leaves however according to Hutton much to be desired. J. Hutton 'The Greek Anthology in France' Ithaca N.Y. 1946 p.176/77 The commentary of Benoist on the other hand is excellent for many philological historical and mythological problems are explained in a sagacious manner. The text also contains many valuable readings from other earlier works and there are excerpts of scholia. She Was Born Near New Brunswick New Jersey And Graduated From Bryn Mawr College In 1896. Later She Came To The University Of Chicago Where She Was A Student Of Education Philosopher John Dewey. During Her Stay At Hull-House Mary Hill Swope Met Her Future Husband Gerald Swope A Fellow Resident. Gerard Swope Lived And Worked There For About A Year Teaching English Electronics And Algebra. In 1899 Gerard Swope Was Promoted To A Branch Manager Position At Western Electric Which Required Him To Relocate To His Hometown Of St. Louis Missouri. During This Time Mary Hill Swope Remained At Hull-House And The Two Corresponded Long Distance. In 1901 Mary Hill Swope And Gerard Swope Were Married On Mackinac Island Michigan. The Marriage Was Officiated By Both A Congregational Minister And Jane Addams The Co-Founder Of Hull-House Who Received Special Authorization. Throughout Their Lifetimes Mary And Gerard Swope Associated Themselves Closely With Social Improvement. Mary Committed Herself To Social And Welfare Work In St. Louis And Later New York. While In New York Mary Was A Member Of The Board Of Directors At The Henry Street Visiting Nurse Service And Remained There For A Number Of Years. She Also Contributed Her Services To The Settlement House Greenwich House. Prior To World War Ii Mary Was The Vice-Chair Of The New York Branch Of The Women's International League For Peace And Freedom For Which She Worked In Several Peace Movements. Mary Also Protested For Peace Through Her Membership With The People's Mandate Committee To End War. In 1922 Gerard Became The President Of The General Electric Company Where He Approached Industrial Management In A Thoughtful Manner Establishing Socially Responsible Labor Policies. He Was Also Appointed Director In More Than A Dozen Other Companies That Were Associated With The Electric Power Or Radio Industries. In 1934 Gerard Participated In The Advisory Board That Developed The Social Security System. He Was Also Involved In The Development Of Many Private Welfare Programs. In 1939 Gerard Served As Chairman Of The New York City Housing Authority. Mary And Gerard Swope Had Five Children: A Daughter Henrietta Hill Swope And Four Sons Isaac Hill Swope Gerard Swope Jr. David Swope And John Swope. Fascinating lengthy explanation of how he came to write "Secrets of the Success of Great Musicians." In part: "Why was it for instance that some well educated intelligent person was not at all liked by the majority and indeed was a failure in life I soon discovered that lack of manners a repellant personality an easily recognizable egotism were responsible for this misfortune. Others again have been blessed with the divine spark of genius but they never reached prominence in life. Why In my investigations I found out that the reason for their lack of success was that they did not concentrate their efforts in that special branch for which they were gifted they lacked the 'stick to it' they were too erratic 'Jack of all trades master in none.' Others on the contrary although endowed with a very small amount of talent made for themselves an enviable name and obtained important and influential positions. The front endpaper bears a label identifying this copy as from the cookery collection of John Hodgkin FLS. A scarce edition - an early note on the endpaper possibly by Hodgkin comments that it is not mentioned in the bibliographies of Drexel or Vicaire. John Hodgkin FLS was born in Birmingham in 1857 the son of John Eliot Hodgkin and Sarah Ransome. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Richmond Surrey and working as an analyst for a medical firm. In 1889 he married Grace Stock and they had three sons. Like his father John Hodgkin had a keen interest in bibliography. He assembled a notable collection of books on the subject of cookery some of which now form part of the Cookery Collection at Leeds University Library along with his extensive notes on the bibliography of cookery and housekeeping whilst others are at Wellcome. He died in 1930 after which his collection was sold and dispersed. The Trattato of Baldassarre Pisanelli doctor in Bologna and Rome died around 1587 had great success between the fifteenth and seventeenth century thanks to its simple structure and ease of consultation. Dedicated to Guglielmo Gonzaga Duke of Mantova and Monferrato the dietary treaty contains good eating tips and takes into account many foods present on the tables of the lords fruit vegetables aromatic herbs cereals and legumes meat fish milk and dairy products wine. The treatise lists the main characteristics of each food elettione the benefits the potential damages the remedies the grades the best consumption time etadi complessioni; in addition Pisanelli writes on the right pages a brief historia naturalis of each food with interesting curiosities on the use of food. Noteworthy are the observations inspired by a hierarchical view of society: the tripe is a type of food for working hard people young partridges have a damaging effect only on rustic people. Pork harms sensitive and lazy people but is suitable for people who fatigues a lot; the best way to eat it is roasted with spices.Porchette usually eaten with great curiosity should be avoided because harmful but if the pig is of considerable age it will be a great source of nourishment. The two autographed letters written to Edward Blake 1833-1912 are requesting an appointment with Sir Frederick Pollock on his visit to Canada to discuss his concept for an Imperial Intelligence Department and a permanent Imperial Commission. BIO NOTES: Mr. Pitt Kennedy The Honorary Secretary had visited Canada and Advocated proposals for the organisation of the Empire. The proposals in brief were the establishment of an Advisory Council a Secretarial Office afterwards described as an Imperial Intelligence Department and a permanent Imperial Commission. Twelve months investigation in which Australasia Canada South Africa and other overseas parts of the Empire were included. Sir Frederick Pollock the eminent jurist and imperialist. An authority on legal and political science in all its branches. He is the author of a number of works which are recognized by lawyers and scholars generally to be of the greatest value. Also known for his lifelong correspondence with US Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. Dominick Edward Blake was a lawyer and politician. Known as Edward Blake was the second Premier of Ontario Canada from 1871 to 1872 and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 1880 to 1887. To view Blake strictly as a politician does him injustice. His clearest victories and greatest impact occurred elsewhere: in the shaping of his party and in the imprint of his mind on equity and constitutional law. During his career he shaped much law as a premier as a minister of justice as a leading figure in parliamentary opposition and especially as a lawyer in the courts.
