Interesting letter addressed to an unknown recipient perhaps a ""naval officer"". Rachilde defends Les Petites Alliées by Claude Farrère and his style in general: ""Je ne veux pas du tout vous laisser croire que l'oeuvre de Claude Farrère les Petites Alliées est un ouvrage de basse littérature . Claude Farrère est un très joli écrivain qui joint aux becs de sa plume une pointe de dandysme laquelle pointe peut le faire mal juger aussi bien par vous que par moi mais n'en demeure pas moins littéraire."" ""I do not want you to believe at all that Claude Farrère's work les Petites Alliées is a work of low literature . Light marginal spotting not touching image otherwise in very fresh fine condition. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The ‘Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called “Imperial” edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened “Moyen-Egypte” and “Grand-Egypte”. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The “Imperial” edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the “Egypte ancienne et moderne” watermark – known as the “Royal Edition” – was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan. Autograph envelope enclosed addressed to ‘Else Hotop’ bearing postmarks dated November 3 1918.Published in Freundschaft mit Rainer Maria Rilke 1946 p. 35.   A precious piece of Rilke’s correspondence reflecting the delights of an enchanted afternoon spent during WW1 with the actress Elya Nevar one of his most fervent admirers. “The truly active and creative period of young Elya’s and Rainer-Maria’s attachment to each other is the beginning of their friendship with the discovery of the unknown the surprise of affinities that are revealed and finally what is so important in friendship as in love this intimacy that begins during a Bavarian autumn while the tumult of war rumbles in the distance” Marcel Brion.   This letter belongs to the beginnings of his relationship with the young Elya Nevar “guardian of his solitude” during Rilke’s troubled Munich period where he experienced an inspiration crisis between “The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge” and the “Duino Elegies”. We are just a few days away from the end of WW1. After brief encounters the previous year Rilke had rediscovered Elya Else Hotop during the summer of 1918 on the theater stage. Every evening he came to admire the actress nineteen years his junior who played the role of a medieval princess in a piece inspired by a 15th-century epic poem. She borrowed her character’s stage name Elya by which Rilke addresses her. Their correspondence began a few weeks earlier after an intensely poetic note by Elya who greatly admired his Book of Hours 1905: she “regards him as THE poet indestructible admirable and accepts everything from him including his indifference” Rilke Catherine Sauvat. Romantic and cerebral the poet makes up for his absences with a beautiful declaration of affection in this letter: “even if I was put off by many things from the intention of writing to you immediately at your first letter my attention has been close to you at many moments and it is so whenever you think you need it dear child”. In spite of this they would spend moments together which soothed Rilke afflicted by a deep creative crisis and affected by the war years.”I would have asked you to send me the book with your notes — but look: when I got home late at night it was on my table. And since you’re already familiar with the language of seals in our exchanges: you who are sincerely attentive.   “His mention of seal language alludes to one of their ritual Wednesday afternoon meetings at Rilke’s house; the poet had gifted Elya a removable seal which could alternatively house a set of ten double-sided sigils engraved with symbols and written captions: “We spent an afternoon playing like children drafting the twenty seals on a sheet of drawing paper and Rainer Maria wrote the text underneath in his delicate handwriting. The book with my notes mentioned by Rilke above was sealed with a sigil depicting an ancient mask with the inscription ‘Lift it up!’” she later recalled. True to her art the actress had chosen the actor’s mask as her symbol. Rilke himself had a fascination for seals; he used the greyhound coat of arms inherited from his Czechoslovakian grandfather to seal his correspondence; and toward the end of his life living in Muzot he wished for these same arms to appear on his tombstone and accompany him into eternity. The poet was grateful for this delightfully quaint activity alongside his medieval princess fond of his eminently medieval Book of Hours: “What you have written about the previous Wednesday this Wednesday so richly ours has gladdened my heart”.   As Marcel Brion observes it was in he unknown‎
