It Was There That Rochester Met Vida Dutton Scudder A Political Activist Motivated By The Social Gospel And Her Lesbian Partner The Writer Florence Converse.The Connection Proved Both Politically And Socially Illuminating. A Male Suitor Was Turned Away In 1907 And A Return To Philbrook Farm In 1908 Invigorated Rochester's Interest In Sociology And The Ongoing Progressive Campaign To Ameliorate The Ills Of Modern Industrial Society.Her Discovery That Same Summer Of Walter Rauschenbusch's Seminal Book Christianity And The Social Crisis Completed Rochester's Conversion From Socialite To Social Activist. From 1912 Until 1915 Rochester Worked As A Researcher And For The Publicity Department Of The National Child Labor Committee A Private Non-Profit Organization Established In 1904 To Help End Child Labor. Rochester Continued In This Same Area In 1915 When She Moved To The United States Children's Bureau A Government Agency Created In 1912 Where She Again Worked On Research And Publications. She Would Remain With The Us Children's Bureau Through 1921. In 1922 Rochester Assumed The Editorship Of The World Tomorrow A Christian Socialist Monthly Magazine Which Had Been Founded In 1918 By The Pacifism Fellowship Of Reconciliation And Which Was Formerly Edited By Future Socialist Party Leader Norman Thomas. Although For Several Years An Editor Of The Liberal Monthly The World Tomorrow Rochester Is Best Remembered As A Co-Founder Of The Labor Research Association A Bureau Which Collected And Interpreted Labor Statistics In Close Coordination With The Communist Party Usa. In The 21St Century Rochester Became The Subject Of Academic Interest For The Duality Of Her Public Political Activity With Successful Maintenance Of A Long-Term Same-Sex Affectionate Relationship With Fellow Communist Grace Hutchins A Relationship Considered Taboo According To The Social Mores Of The Day. ‎This influential and powerful librarian served the Chicago Public Library for 64 years starting 1886 as a page boy and ending after 32 years as chief librarian in 1950. Great content TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Chicago IL 1932 March 4. Addressed "To the Members of the A.L.A. Committee on Chicago Centennial Exposition." Very good. On "Chicago Public Library" letterhead Roden sends this meaty letter regarding the CPL getting a booth at the famous Century of Progress Exposition. In part: "Space for commercial exhibits at the Exposition is quoted at $10. per square foot. At this rate the 3000 feet we are asking for would cost $30000. There seems however to be some chance that space for the Library Exhibit may be set aside without cost. Whether or not this proposition will be accepted remains to be seen. If not then what is our next move I estimate that a creditable exhibit would cost anywhere from $5000 to $15000 depending on how much of the equipment furniture books &c. might be arranged for as loans." He asks that a person be hired for this job as "it is both too important and too large a task for a Committee." Boldly signed in blue ink. Accompanied by a fine heavy stock 5½" X 8½" four-page program and menu "In Honor of / Carl B. Roden / Dinner / Tendered by the Citizens of Chicago" at Chicago's Palmer House. The tissue guards have been preserved and remain in fine condition. A small rub to spine likewise along one edge but very handsome copy rare in this condition. NB: Lucien Edouard Petitot bookbinder practiced his craft from 1875 to 1927 at 1 rue des Beaux Arts in Paris 6th arrondissement.
