This South Carolina attorney and legislator served as the fifth Secretary of Commerce under Franklin D. Roosevelt 1933-38 in which capacity he proved critical to implementing FDR's "New Deal"; in 1939 he served as U.S. ambassador to Canada. Bold signature in ink on a stiff 3" X 1½" card with "Secretary of Commerce' typed below the signature. Very good. Quite faint paper clip imprint. Original Department of Commerce transmittal envelope cancelled on 1 February 1936 also present. A choice example from the height of his fame. unknown

The colophon at the end mentions another year: 'Genuae anno Domini 1542'. Edges dyed red Condition: Binding slightly chafed and worn. An old hand wrote on the title: 'Oratorii Parmetensis'. Some small and old ink annotations. White paper Note: Next to nothing is known about the Italian cleric and scholar Lucio Vitruvio Rossi or in Latin Lucius Vitruvius Roscius. He was born ca. 1500 and was regular canon of the 'Congregazione Renana'. He wrote besides this book on grammar a number of introductory books on linguistics grammar oratory and epistolography e.g. 'Grammaticae institutiones' Venice 1526; 'De ratione studendi atque docendi libellus. Iacobi Lebetii Ferrariensis Christi in crucem acti querela heroico carmine' Bologna 1536; 'De conficiendis epistolis isagogicon' Venice 1538; 'De modo docendi atque studendi ac de claris puerorum moribus libellus quam utilissimus' Venice 1539; 'De commoda ac perfecta elocutione deque conficiendis epistolis Isagogicon' Basel 1541; 'Grammaticarum quaestionum et elegantiarum libri tres utilissimi' Venice 1542; 'Institutionum latinae grammatices libri tres' Genoa 1545. Several of his books saw reissues in different Italian cities. He died ca. 1550. He was a colleague and close friend of Jacopo Lavezzoli born ca. 1510 in Ferrara who is also known as Lebezio or Lebetius. Lavezzoli was named Lebetius after the latinized form 'lebes' Greek lebês of the Toscan word 'laveggio' kettle cauldron. Vergilius Aeneis 3466 Lebetius was praised as 'theologus philosophus orator latinus poeta graecaeque linguae peritissimus'. His best known poem is 'Christi in crucem acti querela' which was published in Roscius' 'De ratione studendi atque docendi libellus' of 1536. Following the ancient example of Cicero who gave some of his dialogues the name of the principal participant Cato Laelius Roscius named his 'grammaticarum quaestionum libri tres' after his friend Lebetius. The other participants are Roscius himself one Sebastianus Eradius Augustinus Florentius Johannes Alenus and Paulus Pincius. At the end is a useful index of two pages. This work on grammar and linguistics was first published in Genoa by the printer Bellone in 1537. Bellone reissued this title in 1542 and 1547. In this edition of 1547 he repeated however in the colophon the year 1542. This 1547 reissue has furthermore a terrible misprint on the title 'Libetius' instead of 'Lebetius'. To complicate matters the edition of 1537 also has at the end a colophon dated 1542! Except for the title pages all these three issues seem similar. As there are not yet digitized copies available to investigate this we cannot be sure. See for Lebetius and Roscius 'Continuazio delle Memorie Istoriche di Letterati Ferraresi' Ferrara 1811 p. 186-191 At the end of the introduction there is a distichon of 18 lines by Lebetius to praise Roscius and his work followed by five other short poems in praise of Lebetius and Roscius. § This book is very rare. We located in KVK only three copies one in the University Library of Edinburgh and two in Italy of which one in the University Library of Genua Provenance: We found only one book with the same inscription on the title: 'oratorii nannetensis'. It is held by the the University Library of Basel and is in the same hand. This 'oratorium' is the famous 'Chapelle de l'Oratoire' in the city of Nantes at the Place de l'Oratoire. The 'Congrégation de l'Oratoire' came to Nantes in 1619. In 1625 the city council entrusted to them the pedagogical management of the local 'Collège Saint-Clément'. 1894 - 1896 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT CRUISE NOTES OF THE NOTED USS NEW YORK WHILE COMMANDED BY THE RENOWNED 'FIGHTING BOB' EVANS HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG NAVAL CADET WHO WOULD ONE DAY COMMAND THE USS MAINE AND BE AWARDED THE NAVY CROSS
ASEA ABOARD U.S.S. NEW YORK. Good. 1894. On offer is a superb original late 19th Century manuscript journal detailing a 'shakedown' cruise of the noted USS New York under the command of Robley Dungliston 'Fighting Bob' Evans handwritten and compiled by Naval Cadet Roscoe Charles Moody. This folio book which has approximately 70 pages of entries notes and observations regarding the running of the ship from a technical perspective. Dated December 1894 to April 1896 there are seven distinct sections and includes several ephemeral items tucked in; 15 printed forms used for checkups on the ship's engines three pages of handwritten calculations two oversize sheets of Standard Compass Swinging with Starboard helm and Standard Compass Swinging with post helm includes Mean Deviations and Determination of the Variation plus 1 blue print of coastal defenses of Havana Cuba. Section 1 covers 27 pages and was examined and approved as 'Excellent' by noted Captain Robley Dungliston 'Fighting Bob' Evans dated 7 December 1894. This report contains information on the hull main engines water service and fire pumps main feed pumps as well as other pumps steering engines blowers and ventilation main boiler blower other boilers propellers etc. much information about the ships systems with diagrams of some of them plus a longer report headed General Description of Propelling Machinery U.S.S. New York. The other six reports deal with other aspects of the ship and were dated and approved by Captain Evans as well as Captain Winfield Scott Schley. The reports range between eight to 13 pages and are dated 7 Jan. 1895; 1 Mar. 1895; 1 Feb. 1896; 2 Mar. 1896 W. S. Schley; and 9 April. We learn from a casual read that the U.S.S. New York was a twin screw armored cruiser and was built and equipped ready for service by the William Cramp & Sons Ship and Engine Building Company of Philadelphia PA the designs throughout having been furnished by the Navy Department. The contract prize was $2985000 and the requirement as to speed was that the vessel should maintain a speed of 20 knot for four consecutive hours with an air pressure in the fire rooms not exceeding 2½ inches of water it having been further stipulated that a premium of $50000 should be paid to the contractors for every quarter knot made in excess of this requirement and that a penalty of $50000 should be extracted from them for every quarter knot deficiency. Assigned to the South Atlantic Squadron the New York departed New York Harbor on 27 December 1893 for Rio de Janeiro arriving at Taipu Beach in January 1894 she remained there until heading home on 23 March via Nicaragua and the West Indies. Transferred to the North Atlantic Squadron in August the cruiser returned to West Indian waters for winter exercises and was commended for her aid during a fire that threatened to destroy Port of Spain Trinidad. Returning to New York the cruiser joined the European Squadron in 1895 and steamed to Kiel where she represented the United States at the opening of the Kiel Canal. Rejoining the North Atlantic Squadron New York operated off Fort Monroe Charleston and New York through 1897. The New York departed Fort Monroe on 17 January 1898 for Key West. After the declaration of the Spanish American War in April she steamed to Cuba and bombarded the defenses at Matanzas before joining other American ships at San Juan in May seeking the Spanish squadron. Not finding them they bombarded El Morro Castle at San Juan 12 May before withdrawing. New York then became the flagship of Admiral William T. Sampson's squadron as the American commander planned the campaign against Santiago. The Battle of Santiago de Cuba on 3 July resulted in the complete destruction of the Spanish fleet. The cruiser sailed for New York on 14 August to receive a warrior's welcome. The next year she cruised with various State naval units to Cuba Bermuda Honduras and Venezuela and conducted summer tactic. There are 17 tipped in illustrations plus 14 in text illustrations illustrations are all hand drawn in ink bound in contemporary half leather cloth covered boards lacks spine boards shaken corners and edges worn written in ink in a legible hand. Moody graduated from the US Naval Academy as an engineer in 1894. During World War I he commanded the USS Maine for which he was awarded the Navy Cross. He served as head of the Dept. of Mathematics at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was very active at the academy taking part in football being on both the winning intramural team and the Navy football team which beat Army that year! He was also in the choir. Moody also spent time teaching at the academy. TO: McRAE MONTANA MT. Good. 1942. On offer is a very large family grouping of original handwritten World War II letters from three US Navy servicemen who hailed from Montana writing home to McRae Montana. 230 envelopes with letters and also letters in addition to those in envelopes dated 1943 through 1946. Some V-Mail in and out of covers. Two sets from brothers to Aunt Mr./Mrs. Kenneth John in McRae Montana near Hardin south of Billings - last had a Post Office in 1953. Roscoe was in North Africa in 1943 and went to Italy and France. One brother's wife was staying with her parents in Absarokee Montana. Brother Lyle John was with the Army in North Africa mostly Algeria. The other set is from their cousin Kenneth John's son Orville John who started his service later with many 1944 letters from U. S. Naval Training Center at Farragut Idaho and other training facilities. These letters go through early 1946 as he got into the War toward the end but he did get to China Hong Kong and Japan and was mostly with LSTs. There are a few letters to the men sent from US locations. Naval cancels censor markings a few APO markings but mostly Navy. On offer is an interesting and unique 1921 manuscript diary handwritten primarily by Rose Saba and sometimes we believe by her husband Saleem N. Saba. The free end paper states their names and 'Now in Zahlah Syria Former Res. Toronto Ont. Canada.' We note that Zahlah is part of Lebanon today. Entries are for the most part in English but there are entries in Arabic which we believe Saleem wrote. Rose writes many interesting entries which range from Saleem's travels throughout to Beirut Damascus and her own doings at home from the mundane such as ironing meals visits and news from home. We also note that they are a Christian family as they frequently go to church. The diary was located in Toronto and we hypothesize that they moved back from Syria at some point. Historians and researchers of early independent Syria and Lebanon will no doubt find this diary an interesting and unique travel relic of the times. Sir John was a Scots-Quebecer politician who held a wide array of influential high-level Canadian positions and later lesser positions in Britain; he was named 1st Baronet Rose in 1872. His son Sir Charles was also a politician but is better known as a competitive yachtsman horse breeder and businessman and was supposedly one of the models for "Toad" of Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame's classic 1908 children's novel "Wind in the Willows"; he too was named 1st Baronet in 1909. ANS from John Rose 1p lettersheet 4" X 6" Guildford England 1882 September 16. Addressed to New York banker John Barker. Very good. On imprinted "Loseley Park / Guildford" letterhead Sir John "sends you with much pleasure a copy of the only Photograph of myself which I have: I wish it had been better." Boldly penned in brown ink. ALS from Charles Day Rose 2pp lettersheet 4" X 6" London England 1895 October 26. Likewise addressed to banker John Barker. Good only. While attractive this letter was somehow sliced horizontally in half though neatly discreetly and archivally reunited. Sir Charles thanks his banker "for the trouble you have taken in executing my small commissions" but more importantly remarks: "You will see that I have decided to withdraw my challenge for the Cup in view of the strong feeling that exists amongst the public and my own friends especially including Lord Dunraven who feels that it is likely to be construed as an act of hostility against himself." Lord Dunraven Windham Wyndham-Quin 1841-1926 was owner and co-owner of the 1893 and 1895 America's Cup-winning yachts so apparently took umbrage at his friend's temptation to enter that famed competition. Despite slice quite nice in appearance with his imprinted "Bartholomew Lane E.C." address. unknown

The diary is a 5-year diary. However it was used only to record daily events for one year. The author of the diary is Rosemary Fisse. She was born in New Orleans in 1923. She later married Lt. Col John Stahl U. S. Army. She passed away in 2016 at the age of 93. She was 18 years old at the time she began this diary. The diary recounts Fisse's daily events with a very strong emphasis on her social life. For the context it is clear that her family enjoys a middle-class life as she takes many opportunities to dine out visit clubs take in shows and shop with her friends. From context she has completed secondary school and enrolls in a secretarial program at a private college. She has a sweetheart who is already in the U. S. Army and she speaks often of him: "Ida Phillip Charlie and I went out dancing. We met Phillip Tweedy at St. Regis. Then we left them and went to the Cotton Club. I had a wonderful time. I never would have thought I would go out with Charlie" Jan 1 1942. She has a job but it is unspecified - context clues suggest its in a retail environment. What does come across is that she is not committed to it as she often takes time off work to shop or indeed skips coming in to work. Charlie is clearly her focus . Until Phillip comes along
: "We were very busy today. Ida said Charlie asked where I was & he said he didn't know I was home. Otherwise he would have asked me to go with them last night. Daddy said if I went out tonight I would have to be home for 1: 00 and I could drink 1 hi ball; he was peaches and cream with me. I didn't hear a word from Charlie & I sat home. I was broken hearted" Jan 17 1942; "Instead of Miss Short putting me in toilet goods she puts me in socks and hosiery. I was in misery all day" Apr 6 1942; "Mary & I went in town. We signed for Social Security. I could have had a job at Woolworths in the stock room. But I don't want to work. We put in our application at the telephone company. I have to go back Friday for an examination by the nurse" May 13 1942; ".went and got an application to fill out in order to join the war. I wish momma and daddy would sign up for me. I would like to wear the uniform
" Sept 21 1942. This is a wonderful diary detailing the ups and downs of this young woman's life. Its a transition time for her and the diary is an excellent look inside her world. For a women's studies researcher it provides a very good look at the social world of a young woman in the early years of WWII she records a lot of names of friends which would help genealogists in filling in gaps in local family histories. The diary measures 5.5 inches by 4 inches and contains 365 pages. Used only as a 1-year diary it is 100% complete. The hard covers are in good condition. It is closed with a clasp and the clasp is intact and in working order. The spine and binding are in good condition as are all of the pages. The handwriting is legible. Also included is a black and white photograph of a U. S. Soldier posing for a picture. Although not identified the picture is dated Aug 15 1944.; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages . Offner goes on to ask for the amount per binding and mentions the fact that the paper has been discontinued and finishes "I am very excited about having the book bound by you. It is a privilege." In addition Werner has made a number of pencil marks and brief annotations on the flyleaves.
