Fourth Edition first published in 1839. 8vo size hardcover has tan and blue green marbled boards under leather spine and corners. 324 pages with red speckled outside pages. Firmly sewn binding. Half title page follows title page. Dr. Josef Skoda 1805 - 1881 is best known for his work as a pioneer in percussive diagnostics. The facq.org biography of Skoda says: "In 1839 Skoda published his treatise on percussion and auscultation. In it he attempts to classify the sounds in the chest according to categories that take into account musical pitch and tonality with alternations from full to hollow clear to dull tympanitic to muffled and high to deep. The drum-like tympanic resonance heard on percussion above an area of pneumonia or lung fluid is known as Skodaic resonance." An article about Dr. Skoda on whonamedit.com explains Skoda's development or expansion of the work of Josef Leopold Auenbrugger more than 50 years before of the fundamentals of percussion and auscultation as diagnostical tools in clinical medicine: "Around 1836 Skoda began investigating the fundamentals of percussion and auscultation then two of the modern examination methods in clinical medicine. Skoda's approach was based solely on the objective description of physical signs. To him the acoustic phenomena produced by percussion were not specific for a given organ but for the amount of air or fluid; hollow empty tympanic high deep clear dull. Based on acoustic phenomena Skoda tried to explain the physical changes in an organ and then from the anatomical and pathologic possibilities he reached a clinical diagnostic conclusion. In the theory of auscultation Skoda first distinguished reverberations heart sounds from cardiac murmurs. On the basis of comparative observations of healthy people and those known to have heart disease he learned to diagnose various heart illnesses from the presence of murmurs in individual valves. He also evaluated pulsations of the neck veins and accentuation of further reverberations in the pulmonary artery. Through his lucid account of functional changes and symptoms attendant upon various changes in valves of the heart or the pericardium he established the principles of the clinical physiology of heart diseases." Booksellers notation and owner's name on fep. Title page has some soil looks like graphite and a penciled name just above title. Title page and following page have a lower corner which was not cut properly by publisher and is folded at corner. There is a large - about three quarters of the page - light stain first visible on back of title page and staining continues to varying sizes throughout the book. Pages are surprisingly bright especially toward the center and stain does not obscure any text. There is also stain on lower corner of pages 245 through 276. There also appears to be some very light foxing mostly in the right margin throughout. ‎Confidant of Missouri pioneer Jonathan Bryan 1759-1846 of the noted St. Charles family whose relatives included their neighbor Daniel Boone. DS 1p 7½" X 12" St. Charles County MO 1847 February 2. Near fine. Acknowledgment that Tuter who signs himself as "Administrator of the Estate of Johnathan Bryan" has had a writ of replevin made out and issued to the St. Charles sheriff Edward C. Cunningham 1809-65 for delivery to an unnamed offender. The writ seeks to recover the following property apparently wrongfully taken from Jonathan Bryan's estate: "one negro man a Slave named Heney one Two horse waggon and one pair of Briches Two Black horses one Lorrel horse with bold face one walnut Cupboard one clock one Bureau one bedstead and bedding one walnut Table one Trunk one Bible." In other words everything but the kitchen sink. Signed at the conclusion by Tater in his definitely untutored hand. Tales of slaves are found in the Bryan family lore such as: "Mrs. Jonathan Bryan a kinswoman of Daniel Boone was working in her yard with a slave woman when a boy slave screamed. She saw an Indian warrior heading for them with a tomahawk in one hand and a gun in the other. The women ran for the house. Just as they were slamming the door they caught the warrior's head and right arm between the door and facing. The slave woman grabbed the hatchet from his hand and killed him with a sharp blow. The women had barely recovered from their fright when the boy shouted again." Could the slave boy in this old family legend by none less than the "Slave named Heney" whose return is demanded in this replevin suit Quite unusual slavery item with an intriguing history. unknown books‎

Engraved title depicting some mythological figures and a small portrait of Alexander the Great Condition: Vellum age-toned. Front flyleaf gone. Three pinpoint holes on the rear joint. A small tear in lower margin of title which is thumbed. Paper foxed and with some brown stains. One old ink annotation Note: The German humanist diplomat and historian Johannes Sleidanus Sledanus Sleidan was born between 1506 and 1508 in Schleiden hence his name a city South of Cologne. He is best known for his 'De statu religionis et reipublicae Carolo Quinto Caesare Commentarii' published in 1555 which made him the historian of the Reformation. It was so impartial that it pleased no one. The book was placed by the pope on the Index and the Lutherans were not pleased either. Still it remains the most valuable contemporary history of the times of the Reformation and it contains the largest collection of important documents. Less controversial is Sleidanus world history 'De quatuor summis imperiis babylonico persico graeco et romano' published in the year of his death 1556. NDB 24 499/500 The idea of four empires is an old one. In the Old Testament an angel tells Daniel who was in slavery in Babylon how to interpret a dream he had. Daniel had dreamed of a winged lion a ferocious bear a panther with four wings and four heads and an unnamed alien monster with iron teeth that devoured everything. The angel: 'These four great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth'. On the day of judgement the last of the four kings will lose his power and will vanish and the kingdom will be given to the saints. Late medieval exegesis explained the fours beasts as follows the lion was the Babylonian kingdom the bear was identified as the dominion of Persia and the winged panther was the reign of Alexander and his diadochi. The beast with the iron teeth was the Roman empire. All these kingdoms stood on feet of clay. As the divine vision of Daniel provided only for four kingdoms the Holy Roman Empire of Sleidanus' days had to be a continuation of the Roman Empire of the past. The German emperors with the divine legitimation of the Bible continuated merely the Roman empire. Sleidanus' historical chronicle is based on the order as revealed in Daniel's vision. 'His concern is the historical legitimation of the German imperial reign through its continuity with the Roman empire'. He thus gave biblical dignity to the German imperial constitution and thus legitimated the protestant Reformation. W. Schmidt-Biggemann 'Philosophia perennis: Historical Outlines of Western Spirituality in Ancient Medieval and Early Modern Thought' Dordrecht 2004 p. 399-400 This world history of Sleidanus was immensely influential. In the next 150 years more than 60 editions were published. Sleidanus succeeded in creating with both his historical works a common historic identity for the protestants in a hitherto Catholic world. History had at the beginning of the Reformation to be repossessed and rewritten to underline the Protestant claim for legitimacy and authority. His History of the four Empires contained enough condemnations of the popes to suit the taste of his public. This undated Janssonius edition is probably a pirate edition of an Elzevier production published between 1631 and 1664 the year Janssonius died. Willems no. 358 dated 1631 no. 763 dated 1655 & no. 1179 dated 1654. The Couple Became Close Collaborators: Working Together To Combine Design Illustration Text And Theatre. Armfield's Wife Also Influenced Him To Become A Pacifist And Christian Scientist. She Was A Prolific Author And Had Been Embarrassed By Being A Female Member Of Her Writers' Club. She Approached The Club With The Support Of Christina Gowans Whyte Elsa Hahn Violet Alcock And An American Jessie Trimble. She Proposed To Change The Club But Her Offer Was Refused. She Realised That Women Needed A Respectable Club That Offered Good Hospitality. Aspiring Career Women Needed A Place Where They Could Entertain Without Having To Invite People To Their Homes. She Formed A Committee And Despite Writing To 60 Writers They Found Only Two Extra Supporters. Smedley's Father Offered To Fund A Clubhouse If She Could Find A 1000 Members. Jessie Trimble Proposed That The New Club Be Called The Lyceum Club And The New Committee Arranged For Smedley To Meet Lady Frances Balfour. By Now The Committee Had Decided To Extend Their Net For New Members From Writers To Professional Women And Even The Daughters Or Wives Of Prominent Men. Balfour Agreed To Lead The New Club And Served As Chair For 15 Years. She Placed An Advert In The "English Women's Yearbook". Smedley Became The Founder Of The International Association Of Lyceum Clubs. The Clubhouse Was At 128 Piccadilly Where There Was An Art Gallery And Here The Club Offered Not Only A Gentleman's Club For Women But Also Advice For Members' Careers And An Introduction To Other Clubs That Grew Around The World. From 1915 The Couple Spent Seven Years In The United States. There Is A Painting Of Her By Her Husband Which Was Made In 1906. Smiley owner of the Mohonk Mountain House a prestigious Ulster County New York summer resort began the Lake Mohonk Conference on International Arbitration an annual event that lasted until 1916 and helped create the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague Netherlands which still functions today; upon Smiley's death in 1912 his position as host was assumed by his brother Daniel well known in climatology circles for beginning an official daily weather reading at Lake Mohonk on January 1st 1896 that continues to this day at the aptly-named Daniel Smiley Research Center. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Mohonk Lake NY 25 September 1913. Addressed to General Horatio King 1837-1918 Medal of Honor-winning Civil War soldier politician and author. Very good. Lightly age toned more so near edges with light edgewear. Nice and relevant content on letterhead of the famed conference for which he's best known: "Accept my best thanks for the bronze memento of the recent Gettysburg celebration" he writes "as well as for the very appropriate verses written by you. These are appreciated by me as one who counts the Gettysburg celebration as being a marked event in national which is after all a large part of the international peace."
