Havana morocco title label. Head slightly worn. Foot largely missing. A crack at foot. Corners slightly bumped. Split to upper joint at head. Modest binding. Like Walpole's Castle of Otranto The Recess is one of the first Gothic novels not yet inhabited by the formulas and stereotypes that would exhaust the genre itself but it already contains all the ingredients that would make it successful: spleen melancholy terror settings of ruined castles and abbeys secrets surrounding an obscure birth. This novel above all marks the superiority of English fiction with a plot and narrative writing much more mature and developed than The Castle of Otranto. Two sisters live in the underground chambers of a castle and the novel gradually unfolds the discovery of this strange situation. We read in the Historical Literary and Anecdotal Memoirs drawn from the correspondence of Grimm and Diderot: ""it is the story of a daughter of Mary Stuart and the Duke of Norfolk a tissue of romantic incidents sad implausible but whose sequence has nevertheless I know not what charm that can engage readers who love this kind of work."" ‎1840s-1890s LARGE ARCHIVE OF 47 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LETTERS TO THE FAMED ASTRONOMER ADMIRAL INVENTOR AND AUTHOR ERNEST MOUCHEZ FROM HIS SISTER CABINET MINISTERS FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES‎

‎France. Very Good. 1846. Manuscript. On offer is an outstanding archive of forty-seven 47 letters from the personal files of famed Admiral of the French Navy and Great Astronomer Amédée Ernest Barthélemy Mouchez. The archive dates 1846 through 1891 and is made up of a few letters from his sister a letter to his mother and then the balance from colleagues notables and friends; a number are on stationery of the Republic of France; Sociedad Cientifica "Antonio Alzate" Mexico; Ecole Normale Superieure Laboratoire de Chime; Senat and some French Ministerial Office letterheads. This fascinating archive touches upon many of Mouchez' career highlights as the letters deal with a number of different areas - Mouchez' work in China matters of the Observatory Mexico personal communications of friends and colleagues etc. Mouchez had a spectacular career embarking on a career in the French Navy as an ensign in 1843. This was a period of relative international maritime peace and much of the navy's activities were dedicated to exploration and discovery. Mouchez was initially occupied with hydrographic studies along the coasts of Korea China and South America penetrating 320 km up the Paraguay River and exploring the Abrolhos Islands. He improved the practice of surveying at sea adapting terrestrial instruments for naval use and was especially concerned with the problems of determining longitude. He developed the use of the theodolite and meridian telescope to improve the error in establishing longitude. Attaining the rank of Captain in 1868 he embarked on a series of expeditions to chart the coast of Algeria. At the conclusion of his project in 1873 he was elected to the Bureau des Longitudes and in the following year was sponsored by the Académie des Sciences to observe the transit of Venus from St. Paul Island in the Indian Ocean. On December 9 he made a sequence of superb photographic plates of the event. In 1875 the Académie elected him a member of the astronomy section and in 1878 he was promoted to rear admiral and awarded the role of director of the Paris Observatory. The observatory had fallen into disrepair and disrepute since the chaos of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the Paris Commune of 1871. Mouchez set about a programme of reconstruction but failed to persuade the government to fund a new observatory outside the centre of Paris. In 1887 he collaborated with Sir David Gill to host an international astronomical conference in Paris. The principal outcome of the conference was a multi-national project to compile and index a photographic atlas of the heavens the Carte du Ciel. The project consumed massive effort over several decades before it was rendered obsolete by modern astronomical methods. He is also credited with founding Mountsouris Observatory and he is the author of six books on astronomy navigation nautical instruction etc. A grand boulevard in Le Havre and a village in Algeria are named for Mouchez. This is a great archive of intersecting and diverse worlds being astronomy France and her Navy Algeria militaria geography cartography and South America. Prose translation of the Oedipus Rex and the Electra. At the end of each play ca. 60 pages filled with 'remarques' Condition: Small inkstain on the frontcover Note: The French scholar André Dacier 1651-1722 was the first Frenchman to translate a Greek tragedy in 120 years! The latest translated tragedy dates from 1573 an 'Antigone' translation of J.-A. de Baif. During this period the Roman author Seneca was the only tragedian in the spotlight. At the end of the 17th century arose a new demand among men of letters for new translations of almost forgotten classical playwrights. The Parisian publisher Barbin brought in 1692 a French translation of the Poetics of Aristotle by André Dacier on the market an obscure and difficult treatise on the Art of Poetry the first philosophical treatise that focuses on literary theory especially of tragedy and that has exerted a tremendous and lasting influence on western literature. In the same year Barbin and Dacier published a French translation of two plays of Sophocles the Oedipus Rex and the Electra as a kind of companion volume to this Poetics translation. This Dacier makes clear right at the beginning of the preface: 'Aprés avoir expliqué la Poëtique d'Aristote j'ai cru qu'il 'etoit necessaire de donner une traduction de quelques Tragedies des Grecs afin qu'on pût voir en même tems la régle & l'exemple'. leaf 2 recto' The Oedipus Rex and the Electra are perfect works of art rien de plus parfait for the understanding of Aristotle's treatise. The translation of Sophocles's plays was published anonymously as: 'L'Oedipe et l'Electre de Sophocle. Tragédies Grecques. Traduites en Franc¸ois avec des remarques'. Our edition of 1693 is a reissue of this edition with a slightly different title now with the name of the translator but remarkably enough omitting the names of the two plays presented. Rare especially signed and inscribed. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s son P. T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York specializing in labor and insurance and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece Eleanor Sherman Fitch the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter Maria “Minnie†Ewing Sherman Fitch before he died. Accounts Of Sorokin's Activities In 1922 Differ; He May Have Been Arrested And Exiled By The Soviet Government Or He May Have Spent Months In Hiding Before Escaping The Country. After Leaving Russia He Emigrated To The United States Where He Became A Naturalized Citizen In 1930. Sorokin Was A Sociology Professor At The University Of Minnesota From 1924 To 1929 When He Accepted An Offer Of A Position By The President Of Harvard University To Join The Harvard Faculty Where He Continued To Work Until 1959.
