Stadler Photographing Co. label on inside of back cover; "Stadler Photographing Co." is stamped on back of each photograph. No date of production but Stadler Photographing Co. and Joseph A. Hoegger were each active in the 1920s. The final photograph is captioned "Hoegger White Covered W.C. Seats and Covers." At the upper edge of one photograph is "J.A.H." The photographs are of medicine cabinets toilets and other bathroom fixtures. In Near Fine Condition: binder is slightly dusty; corners rubbed; photographs are clean and bright. 1823 Manuscript Letter of Well-Known Royal Navy Officer and British Politician Who Served As Governor of Newfoundland and a Conservative MP in England
Leeward Island Station. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1823. Unbound. On offer is a super original 1823 manuscript letter handwritten by a staff member of Sir Thomas John Cochrane 1789-1872 Royal British Navy officer and Governor of Newfoundland from 1825-1834. He would have had this letter written for him while in command of the Leeward Island Station which had been handed over to him by Sir Edward Owen in late 1822. He would remain in command of this station until he returned to England in late 1824. The letter was written to one Captain Porter and is transcribed below: "Sir Thomas Cochrane presents his compliments to Captain Porter. He thinks he heard Captain Porter mention that he had information about Pirates in the neighbourhood the particulars of which Sir Thomas forgot to ask Captain Peters who might oblige Sir Thomas by favouring him with any information he may be at liberty to disclose Sir Thomas not having the means of posessing such Intelligence there being neither English Coastal or Merchants at this port." dated March 7 1823. It is signed by an unknown secretary of Sir Cochrane's. This letter is an important piece of both British naval and political history as well as Canadian history as Cochrane was a key figure in Newfoundlands early days. BIO NOTES: Sir Thomas John Cochrane 1789-1872 son of Admiral Sir Alexander Inglis Cochrane 1758-1832 was a British Royal Navy officer and politician. He became Governor of Newfoundland from 1825-1834. During that time he was a controversial figure and helped establish representative government. He was elected as a Conservative MP for Ipswich Suffolk in England and was in office from 1839-1841. Other highlights of his career include his time as second in command and then commander-in-chief of the China Station 1842-47 and commander-in-chief for Portsmouth 1852-55. Cochrane became Admiral of the Fleet in 1865. In his personal life Cochrane married Matilda Ross later Wishart and they had two sons including the well-known Alexander Cochrane-Wishart-Baillie 1816-1890 and two daughters. This Greek-born American artist was the youngest of that fabled group of abstract expressionist painters that included Jackson Pollock Mark Rothko and Willem de Kooning active in New York in the 1940s and '50s. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Boston Massachusetts on 27 October 1976 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 13-cent "Winter Pastime" Christmas stamp at upper right. Simple blue and gold "First Day Cover" printed cachet at left. No distracting recipient's name/address. Just right of center Stamos signs boldly in black ballpoint -- unfortunately his pen skips on the first name only which he partly overwrites. A most uncommon signature. This stamp NOT designed by Stamos by the way but by Stevan Dohanos. unknown

This engineer joined the Boeing company in 1962 as head of their aeronautical electronics division and soon rose to vice president where he gained fame for spearheading the race to develop the 747 jumbo jet a massive management and engineering achievement as well as an enormous financial gamble that ushered in a new age of air transport; he served as president from 1972 to 1985 their longest ever. Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Jamaica New York on 12 April 1970. Single 20-cent "Audubon 1785-1851" air mail stamp at upper right. NOT a First Day Cover but left side bears a large circular purple inkstamp commemorating "First TWA 747 Service New York-Paris." To the right of this in the "sweet spot" Stamper signs large and bold in black ballpoint. Most unusual. Comes with original transmittal envelope and TNS secretarial 1p 7¼" X 10¼" Seattle WA 1970 May 11. Addressed to Paul Johnston. Thanks him for "the personal interest of so many people in the 747. we're very proud of this newest member of our jet family. unknown
