‎Richmond Hill New York NY Juarez Mexico. Good. 1929. Original Cloth. On offer ia a personal diary starting July 4 1929 ending August 31 1929. The inscription reads: Stanley F. Treu 109-33-116 St. Richmond Hill Long Island N. Y. Stanley a rather 'wild one' though quite literate and certainly well spoken describes a cross country trip in great detail. Beginning from home in Richmond Hill LI he writes daily crosses the country to Oregon down to Mexico and back to New Yorok State over the near 8 weeks they are on the road. Frequent repairs a fair bit of drinking and shenanigans these fellows are a fun bunch and quite independant. Stanley's observations of the country and the trip are super. He gives particular detail of a juant to Juarez where he and the boys run some booze up into the USA from Mexico. There are also wonderful descriptions of the scenery in State Parks. There are description of Glaciers Old Faithful and every thing you can imagine. Arlington Cemetary was mentioned and there are descriptions of killing animals a rabbitt and a rattlesnake. He mentions fishing several times and also talks about the food and the problems with the car they were driving. Each page also notes the miles traveled. The last few pages seem to be ripped out. The last entry says that he went to a welcome home party and "Had a wonderful time while it lasted." The entry about the Mexican trip reads as follows: "First thing this a.m. Erny went into the city to get our supplies & I cleaned the carbon etc. until he got he back. We then filed the shines on the 3 not so bad bearing but the one Erny had bought needed new shines so once again he went back to Dodge. I ground the valves while he was gone & upon his return we finished up. The one new bearing was too tight & caused a piston slap at first but gradually came in. our vacuum tank was leaking so we rode to Dodge & had that fixed. After that we ate & then went over into Jurez Mexico leaving our car in Texas. Had some drinks &wrote some cards. Crossed bridge 3 times before we finally got what we wanted. Bought cigarettes etc. Got acquainted with a fellow in a gas station who told us how we could get some booze over. At 10.00 he a mex. Erny & I rode over the border in a car at a desolate spot Had a few more drinks & then smuggled 4 qts back with us. The 2 guys we took over were afraid to come back so we ran the stuff over alone. It was quite a thrill even though we weren't bothered by any customs officers. Rode out of the city about 30 miles & camped on the side of the road. The mosquitos were terrible. Reading- 22229 Day- 40" For the most part quite legible I would say at least 95% fully written but a 110% entertaining. The cover is careworn but no significant damage to the outside. Ther are few pages torn out of the end of the book most likely for notes as the text appears complete. On offer are two 2 fascinating mid 20th Century travel diaries handwritten by Stanley Wade Baron a Philadelphia born 1922 American novelist and art critic who was also a gifted pianist. Baron worked in the US Embassy in London as a political analyst but in 1950 he resolved to become a writer and spent two years in Europe. His time was productive leading to two novels: 'End of the Line' and 'All My Enemies' and some candid reminiscences entitled 'People and Americans: A Memoir of Transatlantic Tourists'. In 1954 while in Majorca he wrote another novel 'The Facts of Love' about a spoiled but charming American woman in Paris and her exasperating treatment of men. These two diaries make for a fascinating glimpse into a privileged literary travelling life in post War Europe and America. These diaries for historians and researchers provide an unparalleled glance in Mr. Baron's psyche as he is ever analytical and has a keenly observant eye balanced between a pragmatic political observer and an ever open minded artistic brain. His thought processes are simply remarkable in many ways. Here is an example: "Not too cold particularly this am. Reading David Copperfield which reads admirably like autobiography the beginning certainly like Tristam Shandy though less fantastic. What makes the Heeps so awful love of girl children one of unconscious themes. It details his social life his writing plotting and reading and his state of health. ‎Dean Stanley" was one of the leading and most prolific liberal Church of England theologians on 19th century England and served as Dean of Westminster from 1864 to 1881. Partial ANS 1p 4½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Faintest of age toning; two faint vertical folds. Clipped portion of letter on pale blue stock. Below a few illegible works is a large bold wild educated guess "Yours truly" and "A.P. Stanley" followed by a dozen or so words on three lines that perhaps partially read: "The remuneration is 2£ a / week for copying &c 10" after which it's anyone's guess. Verso also bears 15 or so large words in Stanley's notorious hand some of which may read: "copy for the / place of." and "I can pay / to hear from you" -- or not. Incredibly this outlandishly illegible fragment is accompanied by a clipped late 19th century newspaper tidbit of the period 2 3/4" X 3¼" that describes this very document and the original recipient's experience in trying to transcribe it! Reads in full: "A correspondent of The Manchester Examiner says that he once received from Dean Stanley the most inscrutable epistle he ever beheld. It was written upon poor blue paper and in two kinds of ink the latter portion in black ink and the former in ink about the color of brown vinegar. The writing had a thin timid scratchy look and suggested the thought that it had been written with an old pen with only one prong or with the point of an old stocking-needle. There were no distinct letters as such but a series of nervous pecks at the paper with something smeared with ink. 'I tried over and over again for several days' says the correspondent 'to decipher the missive but to no purpose. I procured a magnifying glass and was simply dismayed at the result. I held it up to a strong gas-light and tried to read the front through the back and the back through the front. I tried to read it perpendicularly horizontally and from each of the four corners diagonally and at last flung myself full length upon the hearthrug and sought a friendly revelation from the glow of the fire but in vain. As a last resource I took it to a clever schoolmaster who after looking carefully over it from beginning to end somewhat discouraged me by asking me who it was from and what it was about. He labored at it more or less for five weeks and then gravely assured me that the man who could read such writing was not yet born.'" A Collection Of Photographic Plates And Some Drawings And Plans As Loose Sheets Printed On One Side Only On Very Heavy Coated Stock Never Bound 14" X 11" Exactly In An Outer Cloth Chemise With Cover Decoration And Lettering As Used Later In The Bound Volumes Together With Three Similarly Printed Inner Paper Chemises Each Labeled With A Printed Volume Number And A Prospectus For The Entire Publication. The Four Page Prospectus Is Printed Like The Cover On The First Page With Additional Text "The First Part Will Be Issued In Early November" At Top And "The Price Of The Book Which Will Sell By Subscription Will Be $40.00 Payable In Advance Or At The Rate Of $10.00 The Part As Issued"; Pages Two And Four Show A "Specimen Illustration" And The Third Page Describes The Work Itself Which "Consists Of 200 Plates Brought Out In Four Parts Of 50 Plates Each To Be Bound Ultimately In Two Volumes"; The Order Form Is Attached To The Third Page.The Chemise With Printed Identification As Part Three Contains Plates 51-100 With A List Of Plates;Part Two Contains Plates 101-150 Again With A List Ofmplates;And Part Four Contains Plates151-200 The List Of Plates Lacking. Altogether The Set Lacks Part One Plates 1-50 And Plate 143. Of The 200 Originally Issued The Set Later Expanded To 300 Plates At Least.
