Starr Was Born In Auburn New York The Fourth Son Of A Presbyterian Minister. He Was Educated At The University Of Rochester And Received A Ph.D. In Geology From Lafayette College In 1885. He Served In Various Academic Posts Including Registrar And Professor Of Geography At Chautauqua Where He Became Acquainted With William Rainey Harper. In 1892 Harper Asked Starr To Help Organize A Program In Anthropology At The New University Of Chicago. Starr Taught Anthropology In The Department Of Sociology And Anthropology Under The Leadership Of Head Professor Albion W. Small. He Was An Active And Popular Lecturer Throughout His Tenure At The University Combining A Heavy Teaching Load With Extensive Travel. He Also Served As Curator Of The Walker Museum From 1895 Until Retirement. Starr's Reputation Was Not Based On His Scholarship But On A Popular And Controversial Lecture Style Which Did Much To Create An Interest In The Study Of Culture. His Work In Support Of Leopold's Defense Of His Congo Holdings Is A Source Of Much Modern Criticism Of His Work. For His Work On The Book Liberia: Description History Problems Frederick Starr Assembled A Small Collection Of Research Materials; They Cover The History Of The American Colonization Society And Liberia From 1792 To 1914 And Are Now Held At The University Of Chicago. Louis Starr 1849-1925 Became A Visiting Physician At The Maternity Hospital The Northern Home For Destitute Children And Children'S Hospital Of Philadelphia Founded 1855; This Experience Provided Starr With His Education In Pediatrics. In 1880 Starr Began Lecturing On The Diseases Of Children In The University Of Pennsylvania Medical School And In 1884 When Penn Created The Position Of Clinical Professor Of Diseases Of Children Starr Became Penn'S First Professor Of Pediatrics. This Development Was Part Of The Separation Of The Old Field Of Midwifery Into Three Separate Professorships: Obstetrics Gynecology And Pediatrics. Starr Gave Up His Chair At The Age Of 41 Supposedly Because The Wards Of The Hospital Of The University Of Pennsylvania Did Not Provide Facilities For Children Thus Making It Very Difficult For Him To Include Practical Demonstrations In His Teaching. After Leaving Penn'S Medical School Starr Continued His Private Practice While Also Writing And Lecturing On Pediatrics. Starr Was The Author Of Various Medical Works Including Diseases Of Digestive System In Children Hygiene Of The Nursery And The Adolescent Period. He Also Served As The American Editor Of Goodheart'S Diseases Of Children. The 'Thebaid' was used by Boccaccio and Chaucer and there appeared adaptations in Irish French and Italian. Also Statius' 'Silvae' enjoyed a vigorous afterlife and set a standard for the Neolatin poets of the 16th and 17th century. Composing occasional poetry in imitation of Statius was a common pastime among humanist classicists e.g. Heinsius Scriverius Meursius and in England Milton and Ben Jonson. The works of Statius were ably edited by the Dutch classicist of German origin Johann Friedrich Gronov or Gronovius 1611-1671 He was the successor of Heinsius at the University of Leiden and was influenced by Vossius Grotius Heinsius & Scriverius. His editions mark an epoch in the study of Livy of Seneca Tacitus & Gellius. His interest to the textual criticism of Latin poetry was due to the discovery of the Florentine MS of the tragedies of Seneca. In his riper years 'the acumen exhibited in his handling of prose is also exemplified in his treatment of the text of poets such as Phaedrus and Martial Seneca and Statius'. Sandys History of Classical Scholarship 2321 As an editor and commentator Gronovius played a pivotal role in the history of the works of Statius. This small and light book of 1653 weighs only 120 grams it is indeed 'pondus non magnum' but especially the notes are 'satis ponderosae' that is really important. They fill merely 68 pages at the end of this volume and of these pages the notes to the Thebaid fill only 41 and are concerned with little more than 200 passages. 'Their scope is almost entirely limited to the emendation of the text of Statius'. For the Thebaid Gronovius consulted at least 11 manuscripts. 'The place given to conjecture though clearly subordinate is by no means negligible. These notes often involve other aspects as well: Gronovius broad conception of emendation leads him to tackle various questions whenever they lend support to his views. . In his eyes the dignity of critical studies does not lie in emendation itself but in the comprehensive knowledge of ancient languages and cultures in which emendation should always be grounded; such knowledge enables the scholar to get the author's genius and thus restore the text from inside'. Constant 'Le cahier rouge ma vie' Amsterdam Balkema 1945 on offer by a Dutch antiquarian bookseller called Osmose. This bookseller gives Sem & Toet their surname. This book by Constant shows the following dedication: 'Aan Eg. zonder wiens hulp we de winter van '45 niet zoo goed waren doorgekomen. Toet en Sem Hartz'. This book once belonged to Samuel Sem Louis Hartz 1912-1995 an important Dutch graphic designer of Jewish origin who worked all his life for the firm of Enschedé. He married in 1936 Toet Juch whom he had met at the 'Kunstacademie' at Amsterdam. They survived the war in hiding. Database Joods Biografisch Woordenboek. Toet was still alive in 2007. Hartz has a lemma in Wikipedia. Here we find that he published in 1955 'The Elseviers and their contemporaries an illustrated commentary'. For Enschedé Hartz designed poststamps and banknotes. The graphic designer Van Krimpen was one of his friends. In hiding Hartz designed the 'Emergo' a typeface for his own private press the 'Tuinwijkpers'. Important parts of his personal archives now belong to the Library of the University of Amsterdam and the Museum Meermanno-Westreenianum. Hartz apparantly knew Latin for the occasional verse numbers in the margins are from his hand. At the end on the pastedown an old and elegant ownership entry in ink of 'Gerhardus ab Hoeclum'. OCD 2nd edition p. 1011/12 § The 'Thebaid' enjoyed widespread medieval interest. There are more than hundred manuscripts extant. 'Survival of the 'Silvae' has been more precarious apparantly dependent at one point on a single manuscript; the collection was rediscovered by Poggio Bracciolini on one of his book-hunting expeditions in 1417. Some poems in the collection have nevertheless enjoyed a vigorous afterlife - especially 1.2 an epithalamium that outdoes its Catullan precedent with a florid and floral extravagance that sets a new standard for the genre. . It provided a template for a wide tradition of wedding poems in the 16th and 17th centuries. The name of the collection also captured the early modern imagination as we see for instance with Milton's 'Sylvarum liber' 1645 a selection of his Latin poems. When Ben Jonson included in his Works 1616 a collection of 15 poems named 'The Forest' he was bringing Statius' title into English'. The Classical Tradition Cambridge Massachusetts 2010 p. 908 § In this 'Variorum' edition of Statius the German classical scholar Johannes Veenhusen of Bremen 1643-1675 skillfully compared and contrasted the excerpted material of brighter minds. Such editions were very popular and reissued more than once because they contained everthing a student required. It offered the 'textus receptus' which was widely accepted accompanied with the commentary and the annotations of specialists taken from earlier useful normative or renewing editions. Volume 1 - furniture culinary equipment farming tools musical instruments and carpentry members of the family domestic animals and birds flowers fruits scenery etc. Volume 2 - artisans vegetables water plants native and wild animals trees birds of prey insects calender of seasons etc. two plates have a neat contemporary inked note in the margin. Volume 4 - weapons soldiers transport a vessel exotic plants scenes in the Alps native races children's games printing press etc. The last plate is a little more foxed than the rest and two plates are numbered 40 An almost complete set of this charming and very scarce work. There is a little foxing and browning throughout a neat contemporary inscription on each front endpaper and the contents show very slight signs of use with very slight thumbing. The pictorial boards showing a curtained theatrical setting of children in an idyllic landscape are slightly rubbed with edges a little worn. He Traveled To Vladivostok And Reported To The Times That Russian Engineers Were Making Preliminary Surveys From Kirin Towards Port Arthur Then Sent A Telegram To Say That Russia Had Presented A Five-Day Ultimatum To China Demanding The Right To Construct A Railway To Port Arthur. This Was A Triumph For The Times And Its Correspondent But He Had Also Shown Prophetic Insight In Another Phrase Of His Dispatch When He Stated That "The Importance Of Japan In Relation To The Future Of Manchuria Cannot Be Disregarded". After A Visit To Siam And England Then To Australia 1899-1900 He Returned To Peking. When The Boxer Uprising Broke Out And During The Siege Of The Legations From June To August Morrison As An Acting-Lieutenant Showed Great Courage Always Ready To Volunteer For Every Service Of Danger. After A Siege Of 55 Days The Legations Were Relieved By A Multinational Force Which Then Ransacked Much Of The Palaces In Peking With Morrison Taking Part In The Looting. There Was Great Uncertainty Regarding The Future Of China In The Following Months And Through The Times Morrison Managed To Depict A Skewed Picture Before The British Public. While Russia And Japan United In Opposing Any Dismemberment Of China The Country Was Nevertheless Punished By The Imposition Of A Heavy Indemnity. In 1904 Morrison Became A Correspondent With The Japanese Army. He Was Present At The Entry Of The Japanese Into Port Arthur Early In 1905 And Represented The Times At The Usa Peace Conference. In 1907 He Crossed China From Peking To The French Border Of Tonkin And In 1910 Rode From Honan Across Asia To Russian Turkestan. From Andijan He Took A Train To St Petersburg And Then Traveled To London Arriving On 29 July 1910. A Great Chinese Physician Dr. Wu Lien-Teh Succeeded In Staying The Spread Of This Mortal Sickness Which Seemed To Threaten The Whole World. Morrison Published A Series Of Articles Advocating The Launching Of A Modern Scientific Public Health Service In China. When The Chinese Revolution Began In 1911 Morrison Took The Side Of The Revolutionaries. In August Morrison Resigned His Position On The Times To Become Political Adviser To The Chinese Government And Immediately Went To London To Assist In Floating A Chinese Loan Of £10 Million. In China During The Following Years He Had An Anxious Time Advising And Endeavoring To Deal With The Political Intrigues That Were Continually Going On. He Visited Australia Again In December 1917 And Returned To Peking In February 1918. He Represented China During The Peace Discussions At Versailles In 1919 But His Health Began To Give Way And He Retired To England Well Aware That He Had Only A Short Time To Live. History of the Origin Progress and Termination of the American War.
London: Printed for the Author and Sold by J. Murray et al 1794. First edition wide-margined copy of Stedman's massive contemporary two-volume History of the American Revolution-- "the standard work on the subject" --containing 15 military maps and plans 11 folding the largest nearly 20 by 30 inches. Two volumes handsomely bound in contemporary calf green morocco labels half-titles to both volumes. In very good condition rebacked laying down the original backstrips. Rare and desirable with the half-title pages. Philadelphia-born military historian Charles Stedman was a Loyalist who served "with the British at Lexington and Bunker Hill later became commissary to the army of Sir William Howe and was with Cornwallis in the South" New International Encyclopedia 21:485. Taken prisoner by American forces he was sentenced to be hanged as a rebel but escaped. At war's end Stedman moved to England where he authored this authoritative two-volume History--"considered the best contemporary account of the Revolution from the British side" Sabin 91057. As "the standard work on the subject" Stedman's History especially benefits from eyewitness accounts of many campaigns DNB. In addition "the military maps and surveys in the History are of great interest and value" Allibone 2231. Here Stedman argues that Britain's defeat was largely due to the failure of its politicians and ministers and "the military genius of Britain was unimpaired; she rose with elastic force under every blow." Ultimately he concludes that the American Revolution "came as a surprise to the world. no invading army in the present enlightened period can be successful in a country where the people are tolerably united" 449. These two volumes feature folding strategic plans of the Battle of Bunker Hill attacks on Forts Clinton and Montgomery and the Sieges of Charleston Savannah and Yorktown along with maps of Long Island and the Catawba River. 1910 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT HANDWRITTEN LETTER FROM NEWFOUNDLAND IMPORTERS THE STEER BROTHERS TO A SUPPLIER DETAILING A BUSINESS TRANSACTION SOON TO TAKE PLACE BETWEEN THEM
St. JOHN'S NEWFOUNDLAND CANADA 1910. On offer is a short and interesting handwritten letter by the Steer Brothers Importers and General Merchants of St. John's Newfoundland to a Mr. James Storgood. The letter is dated August 17th 1910. It details a recent telegraph between the Steer Brothers and Mr. Storgood for a large purchase. We telegraphed you to get us 150 brls. Squid Salted at $2.50 per barrel. The brothers will be sending the steamer Floria to pick it up. It also says in red ink presumably written by a different Steer brother that we are sending you our house flag by thursday morning train and implored Mr. Storgood to Hoist our flag Friday Morning so that steamer will know where to go to pick up the salted squid. The latter is a very simple but interesting look into the daily business of a Newfoundland general store in the early 20th century. The letter is one page long in good condition. The handwriting is legible and easy to read in black ink. The letter is written on stationery from the Steer Brothers themselves showing them to be located at 379 381 383 Water Street St. John's Newfoundland. Background: John Steer Ltd. a dry goods firm was established by John Steer at St. John's Newfoundland ca. 1860. His sons entered the business in 1890 but the firm failed in the Bank Crash of 1894. John Steer and his sons formed a new company John Steer and Sons which became Steer Brothers and later Steer Ltd. The firm was bought out by a group headed by Calvert Pratt in 1925. Good. The 'Mercure de France' was originally a French review founded in the 17th century under the name 'Mercure Galant' which evolved to become in the 20th century a publishing house. Under the impetus of Rémy de Gourmont and Alfred Jarry a literary review took up the name 'Mercure de France' in 1890 and offered symbolist texts notably by Jean Moréas Ernest Raynaud Jules Renard Louis Dumur. Gradually gaining recognition this review published both the greatest Parnassians Baudelaire Rimbaud Verlaine Mallarmé Heredia etc. and witnessed the emergence of Jarry's Pataphysics. The publishing house was born in its wake. It notably published the first works of Gide and Claudel of Colette of Apollinaire of Georges Duhamel Mercure de France hardcover
