One of the first French fashion magazines published a few days before the famous Gazette fashionable and bringing together the greatest French artists of the Art Deco movement. The Journal ladies and modes is a trimensuelle illustrated French fashion magazine created in 1797. Its publication was stopped in 1839 before being taken in June 1912 under the leadership of Tommaso Antongini secretary friend and biographer of Gabriele 'Annunzio. It will disappear in August 1914 on the eve of the First World War. The review was drawn to 1279 copies making it for the time a relatively confidential publication. The 186 plates with great finesse are engraved on strong paper and colored stencil. They represent the majority of the time women but also men and children. The models are not unlike those of the Gazette fashionable whose publication will be launched a few months later those renowned couturiers but are the fruit of the imagination of the illustrators themselves. The stencils are mostly executed by George Barbier but other artists collaborating on the magazine: Léon Bakst B. Berty Bernard Boutet de Monvel Roger Broders Jan van Brock Umberto Brunelleschi H. Robert Dammy Etienne Drian Abel Faivre Marie-Madeleine Franc-Nohain Xavier Gosé Paul Iribe Kriegck Victor Lhuer Pierre Legrain Charles Martin Fernand Simeon Ismael Smith Armand Vallee and Gerda Wegener. Many of these illustrators will also be involved in The Gazette fashionable. Their work emblematic of the Art Deco movement emphasize the influence of Orientalism and costumes of the Ballets Russes while registering in the daily activities of affluent French of the time. From the preface of the first issue of 1912 Anatole France said: ""After seventy-five years he is reborn. He is reborn through the efforts of a few ingenious minds and artists. He is reborn for the curious if there is that do not simply modes newspaper fired several thousand and illustrated by photography. And if publishers make us very exactly in its format with its paper printing its processes of etching and coloring the old classic patterns of the past is that they intend to continue the pleasantly and become charming classic fashion of today and tomorrow. NEW YORK NY. Good. 1865. On offer is a fascinating original Civil War Era manuscript note book dated January 1st 1865 through to the last page at December 21st 1865. Handwritten by a very dedicated diarist and Divinity student S.W. Dana at Cooper Union in New York City a mere 5 years or so after the school was founded. Well filled throughout the 125 or so pages Mr. Dana describes his daily life activities sermons written and heard and is also keenly interested in the politics of the day: On April 3rd he announces "It has been a great day for New York City & the country Richmond is ours. We have waited long." On April 15th- "This is a sad day for the loyal people of the United States. The sudden assassination of Pres. Lincoln has shocked the nation." He mentions frequently visiting soldier's barracks and often delivering sermons. The 6.5" x 8" marble board covers are detached but present. Burgundy half-leather bordered in gilt gilt lettering and bands on spine panel marbled paper over boards. xii159 pp. Moderately rubbed along joints and corners with exposure at latter as well as along portions of edges. Some surface rubbing as well but no loss. Lacks frontis. engraving of Nancy Linton. Signed by former owner on front pastedown and at top of title page both signatures dated 1825. Dedication page neatly clipped lacking approx. 25% evidently to remove another signature; interior otherwise complete. Foxing throughout generally light occasionally ranging toward moderate. Annotations on rear endpapers. Firm binding decently preserved. Exceptionally scarce. Appears to be the first edition of this title which had several later printings. William Swaim having been cured of a disease possibly venereal by a physician's remedy about 1822 ferreted out the ingredients added to them oil of wintergreen for flavor and extensively advertised his "panacea" especially through pamphlets decorated with a symbolic Hercules killing the hydra. Despite exposes published by medical societies of New York and Philadelphia he continued manufacturing his nostrum waxing immensely rich by the mid-century. Even in the 1930's Swaim's Panacea was still being sold. In the New York Academy of Medicine Library is a hand-written pamphlet announcing a "Hospital for Scrofulous and Syphilitic Incurables to be supported by Subscription" an articles of which states that Mr. James Swaim will supply to the indigent inmates gratis the "Panacea" which is to be "the principal medicine used." No less a talent than Edgar Allan Poe in the Southern Literary Messenger of April 1849 took indirect aim at the audacious claims that Swaim made for his panacea by asking this rhetorical question: "Are our most deserving writers to be forever sneered down or hooted down or damned down with faint praise by a set of men who possess little other ability than that which assures temporary success to them in common with Swaim's Panacea or Morrison's Pills". This book is tightly bound with over 100 black and white plates of fine Chinese bronze mirrors. It appears to have been rebound in thick red library binding. Spine has good strong gilting on title and library number. Front has a small oval insignia of the S.F. Public Library. The front pocket has been removed leaving some paper remnants. Title page has old perforated library stamp. The pages have faded to a deep ivory with slightly darker edges that have a touch of foxing. Page ends are speckled from the original marbly paper design. Red covers have good strong even color. Cover edges have moderate light usage some soil spots along spine gutter and a small old pen dash but looking well-preserved for their vintage. Per Usc Swearingen A Former World War Ii Intelligence Corps Officer And Top Aide To General Douglas Macarthur Swearingen Became A Close Friend And Colleague Of Then Future Secretary Of State Henry Kissinger While Both Were Graduate Students At Harvard University In The Late 1940S. Swearingen'S Wife Darlene Swearingen Said That During The 1970S And 1980S Her Husband And Kissinger Took Numerous Trips To China And The Soviet Union. Their Findings Assisted The U.S. Government In Developing International Relations Policies She Said. Rodger Swearingen Joined Usc Dornsife'S School Of International Relations In 1954 Creating A Teaching And Research Focus On Soviet Policy And World Communism. In The 1960S Swearingen Was One Of A Group Of Cold War Scholars Who Convinced Usc Trustee And Donor Henry Salvatori To Contribute $1.25 Million To Establish The Usc Research Institute On Communist Strategy And Propaganda. After Founding The Institute Swearingen Went On To Direct It Teaching Courses And Seminars There Until His Retirement In 1993. He Also Played A Vital Role In Writing For The Journal Published By The Institute. During The Cold War Swearingen Also Brought His Knowledge To Television Moderating A 35-Week Documentary Series On The "Dangers" Of Communism. Titled Communism: Myth Vs. Reality It Aired Nationwide And On U.S. Armed Services Stations Abroad. In Later Years Swearingen Was A Key Advisor To Several Military Committees - Providing Expert Testimony On Both Soviet And Chinese Military Strategies. Swearingen Was Born On April 23 1923 In Los Angeles. His Father Was The Chief Real Estate Broker For The City Of Los Angeles And Was In Charge Of Negotiating Home Purchases To Make Room For The City'S Expanding Freeway System. <br/> <br/> Hoover Institution Press / Stanford University hardcover

London: James Ridgway 1821. Octavo pp ii 528 slight age-toning but otherwise surprisingly clean internally bound in a recent brown quarter calf and cloth very slightly rubbed. Later editions of the book were published under the title 'A Hothouse and Greenhouse Manual Or Botanical Cultivator' but this first edition is very scarce. Sweet was a prominent botanist and gardener of his day. He published both expensive colour plate works and also practical manuals such as this.
