A tragic dramatic poem. The narrator being the unnamed lover of Maud. He kills her brother in a duel and must flee to France where he later learns that his love Maud has died probably of a broken heart. The distressed poet loses his sanity and imagines he is dead. In the last part his sanity is restored and he leaves to fight in the Crimean War.<p>First of the Kelmscott octavo books with a woodcut title. "Finished on the 11th day of August 1893." Peterson A17. These errors were reset during printing resulting in effect in two states of the book. <p>Elaborately bound by Leon Gruel stamp-signed in contemporary full brown leather with tooled title and leaf design to cover bearing the initials BG. Leighton of London.<p>"The Parisian bookbinding workshop later known as Gruel & Engelmann was founded in 1811 by Isidore Desforges. Desforges took his son-in-law Paul Gruel into partnership in 1825. After Gruel's death in 1846 his widow Catherine successfully continued the business. . In 1850 she married Godefroy Engelmann the famous French printer who introduced lithography to France and invented the chromolithography process. After he joined the business the house changed its name to Gruel-Engelmann. After Engelmann's death Catherine was joined by her sons Leon Gruel overseeing the binding department and Edmond Engelmann directing the artistic aspects of printing. The fame and artistic excellence of the firm continued to grow. Leon Gruel expert binder and collector said 'Modern book binding has discovered nothing to equal the old designs and at best we can only copy' The Bookman 1900:11. He could produce binding in any style but he loved to replicate the old French masters' designs. His frequently-exhibited works brought him the highest awards." The second issue of the first volume RARE. Tenore was an Italian botanist with extensive publications. He helped establish the Botanical Garden of Naples and became its director in 1810. He also served as president of the Accademia nazionale delle scienze and served as president of the Accademia Pontaniana six times from the 1830s through the 1850s. The paper of 13 gatherings more than 100 pages in the index is browning Note: The late antique grammarian Aelius Donatus 4th century A.D wrote a short biography of the Roman playwright Publius Terentius Afer ca. 190-159 B.C in which he tells that Terentius was born in the Roman province Africa and that he came as a slave in the houshold of the senator Terentius Lucanus. He adopted his name when he was manumitted. Terentius is the author of 'fabulae palliatae' which means plays in Greek cloths. He adapted Greek plays especially those of the Greek playwright Menander to the taste of the Romans. Six of his comedies have survived. For later generations he became a model for elegant Latin. The Classical Tradition 2010 p. 930 Erasmus seems to have learned the whole of Terentius by heart in his youth. He admired the author for his 'latinitas' and his civilized humor. His ideal as a humanist and pedagogue was the creation of better men with the help of the classics. He held the opinion that schoolboys should read Terentius over and over again. Thus they could master a pure Latin style and learn at the same time good morals. From the 15th till the 17th century Terentius' plays were frequently staged in schools. § The German scholar Arnold Heinrich Westerhoff latinized as Arnoldus Henricus Westerhovius ca.1677-1738 was rector of the Schola Latina of the Dutch city Gouda from 1711. In 1726 he published in two fat quarto volumes this sumptuous and very scholarly edition with a copious index. It remained popular throughout the 18th century. It should be admired according to Dibdin more 'for elaborate care and research than for exhibiting any critical niceties of construction of the text'. The edition contains the commentary of the 4th century A.D. Roman grammarian and teacher of rhetoric Aelius Donatus the observations from the commentary of the 6th century grammarian Eugraphius and the learned notes the German scholar Heinrich Lindenbrog 1570-1642. § Lindenbrogius also named Lindenbruchius studied classics in Leiden under the famous J.J. Scaliger. After his studies he made a tour which brought him and his friend Johannes van Wouweren to France to the monastery of St. Victor. It was told that they stole there with the help of a monk 16 manuscripts. They became known as 'Les Corsaires de Hamburg'. He was arrested but came free with the help of the French scholar Pierre Dupuy Puteanus the son of the humanist and famous bibliophile Claude Dupuy who was a great collector of manuscripts. Little is known of the rest of his life. From 1610 onward till his death Lindenbrog was the librarian of the Duke Johann Adolf von Holstein who had assembled in Gottorp a great collection of books. ADB 18693 In the preface to his Terentius edition of Frankfurt 1623 Lindenbrogius confesses that he also was imbibed with Terentius as a schoolboy and still loved to read him. Name cut from upper corner of the front flyleaf Note: The 6 plays of Terentius second century B.C remained from antiquity through the Middle Ages and in later centuries an example of style and a rich source for moral sentences. In the 15th and 17th century his plays were frequently staged in schools. § This London edition of 1776 is a reissue of the 1688 London version of Terence's comedies from the Delphin series 'Ad usum Delphini edited by Nicolas Camus 1610-1677 and originally published in Paris in 1675. In the dedication we are told that Terentius was the favorite author of the young prince Louis of France and that he could find in this edition besides the elegance of the Latin language examples of the noble customs and the wisdom of the Romans. Louis of France was born in 1661 as the eldest son of Louis XIV King of France. His title was as the heir apparent to the throne Dauphin Delphinus. As he died before his father he never became king This 'Ad usum Delphini' edition was a tremendous success especially in England. In the English Short Title Catalogue we found till 1800 no less than 17 editions. Several Dutch humanists wrote 'Dialogi pueriles' fictitious dialogues to train schoolboys to converse in Latin conversations which much Terentius in it. § Erasmus held the opinion that schoolboys should read the edifying comedies of Terentius over and over again. So did also the Dutch Jewish philosopher Spinoza. He must have studied his Terentius very thoroughly. In his work hundreds of quotations and borrowings from Terentius can be traced. Rouyer' appealed to the Committee to grant her son who had served as a minister of the protestant church in the Dutch Indies and who was removed honorably from his office because of insanity a pension. According to the rules his time spent in the Indies was just too short for a pension. She asks for lenience for se does not have the means to pay for proper care her son who was looked after in the mental institution Veldwijk in Ermelo. He was educated at the Erasmianum at Rotterdam and was until his death a Praeceptor at the same school. Minellius or Min-ellius produced several school editions of classical authors such as Horace Florus Vergil and Ovid with ample annotations in easy Latin. His first school text of Terentius with his numerous notes and commentary was first published in 1670 in his hometown Rotterdam. At the end of the 17th and in the 18th century reissues of his Tererentius' schoolbook were widely used not only on Dutch grammar schools but also on German English and Danish schools. He Cooperated Too With The Julian Serediak Publishing Firm Editors Of The "Mitla" The Broom Humor Magazine Where His Own Book Smikholina Laughter-Drops Was Published 1966. From 1950 Until His Death He Was The Only Illustrator Of The Great Series "The Unforgettable Classics" All Editions In Spanish Of The Famous "Ateneo" Publishing Firm. Along With His Work For The "Ateneo" He Illustrated Books For Another Argentine Publishing House "Atlántida". The first fact is the death in Carthago the capital of Africa of some Christian martyrs from the city of Scilli in 180 AD. With the work of Q. Septimius Florens Tertullianus the church in Africa enters the full light of history. He was born in Carthago ca. 160 studied law and rhetoric in Rome and became after the return to his native city a prominent and vigorous defender of the new faith. Tertullian is considered to be the founder of Western theology. His earliest work called Apologeticum according to the oldest manuscripts or Apologeticus according to Hieronymus Ep. 70 is 'einer der bedeutendsten und glänzendsten Werke Tertullians.' Bardenhewer 2399 It was written ca. 197 and in it we find a clear picture of the organisation and the method of working of the Christian community in Carthago with their bishops priests deacons and lectores baptized believers and catechumeni new members not yet baptized. The persecution of christians inspired Tertullian to write the Apologeticum in which he examined the foundation in Roman law of the persecutions. In this text addressed to the magistrates of the province of Africa Tertullian attacks also the pagan cults and makes it clear that Christians are loyal citizens of Rome. He argues that the persecution of Christians has no legal foundation and that laws which are iniquitous for christians should be abolished. First he refutes the allegations of immoral hidden rites occulta facinora for instance infanticide Thyestian meals or incest; he defends the christians against the accusation of neglect of the traditional worship and of sacrifices and prayers to the state gods on behalf of the Emperor on the ground that there is only one God and that false gods deserve no worship. Of singular beauty and effect is Tertullian's description of parish life of the christians in chapter 39. Christians are not bad citizens their strict moral code makes them refrain from the things which the law forbids. In the last chapters he rejects the idea that christianity is a kind of philosophy. The christian creed is a divine revelation and superior to human philosophy. § Besides the Latin text and French translation of the Apologeticum this volume of 1780 contains also a text and translation of Tertullian's De praescriptionibus adversus Haereticos. We quote Rose about this treatise: 'Heresy was always an especial bugbear of Tertullian and he set out fairly early about 200 to define it. Like a true lawyer he laid down a praescriptio otherwise known as an exceptio an objection to be raised which if sustained would save the controversialist the trouble of any further inquiry into the merits of his opponent's case. Can the propounder of the new doctrine trace it back to the Apostles If so it is Catholic teaching; if not it is heresy and there the matter ends. The Frenchman De Gourcy 1709-1805 was a successful defender of christianity in an age of enlightenment and growing atheism and deism. III were translated by him under the auspices of the Catholic Church. Like Tertullian who wanted to immunize christians against heresy De Gourcy tried to immunize against protestantism and atheism. This edition contains 11 more treatises than previous editions of Tertullian's works two of which entitled ""De Trinitate"" and ""De cibis judaicis"" are actually by Novatian. Edition whose privilege was shared with Jean de Roigny. Adams T408. Notes and life of Tertullian by Beatus Rhenanus. This edition is based on that produced by Beatus Rhenanus in 1539 in Basel. Contemporary full brown calf binding. Smooth spine with raised bands. Head worn with cracks to joints. Damage to first raised band. Corners slightly bumped. Dampstains in central and top margins throughout the work quite light then fading then returning. On the last 50 pages dampstain on half the leaves rather light and not troublesome more pronounced on the last index leaves. Leaves 3 to 7 restored with a strip of paper mending a tear. Some manuscript notes in the margins. He who was considered the greatest theologian of his time came from a Berber family and was moreover the first theologian from North Africa. He died around 220 in Carthage but was never canonized by the church since he joined a heretical movement the Montanists at the end of his life. His work is remarkable; it is with him truly that Latin theology begins and the thought of the Trinity of which he employs the term for the first time. He thus affirms the unity of God in three persons and that Christ is both God and man composed of 2 substances. This theological thought as we know would have an immense future. His treatises address different subjects: On Patience On the Flesh of Christ On the Resurrection On the Soul Against the Jews On the Trinity. Among them are found a certain number of polemical works.
