Gautier created for the purposes of his novel a new literary genre the archaeological novel where the precision of descriptions takes the reader directly into ancient Egypt. The letter appears to be unpublished not mentioned in the Correspondance Générale de Théophile Gautier edited by Claudine Lacoste-Veysseyre under the direction of Pierre Laubriet Droz Geneva-Paris 12 vol. 1985-2000. Rare glimpse into Gautier's private life the letter captures the anguish that struck the author and his family during the Paris Commune. Separated from his family by the Prussian invasion of 1870 and the Parisian insurrections of 1871 Théophile Gautier confides the extent of his torments both financial and due to the Paris Commune to his ""dear sweetheart"" his younger daughter Estelle Gautier: ""I may yet manage to recover from this collapse . I am happy that these atrocious ordeals have been spared you. For my part I nearly lost my life and I am still not in brilliant condition"". Gautier's usual supporters are evident here through the names of academician Camille Doucet and dancer Carlotta Grisi. The virulence of the fighting between communards and repressive forces can be sensed in the evocation of Gautier's sister Emilie called ""Lili"": ""Lili is still in her cellar. Coming out is too perilous but she will be delivered within a few days. Alas! Very long ones"". Characteristic of the personal register rare in Gautier's correspondence the letter is imbued with the paternal love the author bears for his family: ""What a celebration when we are all reunited for my heart suffers greatly from this dispersion"". unknown

La Présidente honorary nickname given to Apollonie Sabatier alias Aglaëe Savatier her real name was one of the most captivating Salon hostesses of the 19th century. She inspired an ethereal love in Baudelaire who composed his most mystical poems in Les Fleurs du Mal in her honor. The other artists who frequented the apartment on Rue Frochot during her famous Sunday dinners had more licentious feelings for this woman of surprising wit and beauty. The sculptor Clésinger portrayed her in his lascivious woman stung by a snake; Flaubert wrote sensual letters to her ending with the very sincere affection of one who alas only kisses your hand; she has long since been recognized as the model for Gustave Courbet's scandalous The Origin of the World. Gautier sent her this letter in 1850. Sabatier made copies which she never published but privately distributed to her guests: In October 1850 Gautier sent her this very long letter farcical and obscene from Rome commenting with Rabelaisian exaggeration what himself and his friend Cormenin had learned regarding sexuality during their travels. Gautier knew that his freedom of expression would not offend Madame Sabatier. He had long since accustomed her to it and he prided himself on his smut to brighten up the friendly social gatherings of the Rue Frochot. Dictionnaire des uvres érotiques Honored indeed by this priapic attention La Présidente' gave copies to all her guests and the reading of Gautier's indecent prose became a popular event at Parisian soirées. However the letter was ultimately published luxuriously but confidentially after the recipient's death in 1890. After this first edition of 50 copies on papier japon a second edition on papier vélin followed a few months later with a larger print run and without the Rops frontispiece. Theophile Bordeu 1722-1776 is considered one of the greatest physicians of the 18th century and one of the most famous theorists. He is the founder of pathological physiology and his work would give birth to Bichat's General Anatomy. The work in question reports important discoveries on the structure of tissues and notably it is one of the principal books on cellular role and importance. His vitalist physiology principles would earn him being taken as a model by Diderot in D'Alembert's Dream. 1838 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG MAN ENJOYING LIFE WORK AND SUNDAY SCHOOL IN GREENWICH VILLAGE NEW YORK
GREENWICH VILLAGE NEW YORK CITY NY. Fair. 1838. On offer is a super original 1838 manuscript diary handwritten by Theophilus Tappin who lived in New York City's Greenwich Village. He states: "The undersigned respectfully communicates that this is the commencement of his journal. Theophilus Tappin 26th Jan 1838 with the final entry on May 20th 1838 108 Waverly Place New York I shall strive to continue it until the day of my death." Historians and researchers of 'the Village' will understand that the young likely a teenager Mr. Tappin's diary places him in the Village at a formative and historic time called the Empire Period. Newgate Hospital had closed a mere two years before. New York University would come in their stead. Other charitable and beneficial groups opened their doors in Greenwich Village at the time our author writes. It appears he works in a retail store. Living close to the North River and obviously attuned to what occurs on the river he writes much of what goes on. He mentions the packet ships coming to port; a fire and criminality: 'A very large fire in Avenue D between 4th and 5th streets and an attempt to forge notes on the Kentucky Bank by a few rouges". He mentions a wind storm that blows a ship out of the bay and leaves only one boy onboard who is rescued; riding sleighs though New York City during snow storms; ships coming into port his first trip aboard a sailing ship; his family the struggles of work and his mother catching some illness. There is also mention of politics regarding the Whig party and elections. Towards the end of the diary some issues arise and Tappin remarks he is looking for a place over and over and seems to be depressed. This 7.5 x 6 inch 85 page or so diary makes for a fascinating look at the man and his times in mid 19th Century Greenwich Village and the backdrop of historic changes in the making for the area. Boards are detached and while he didn't write each day he writes paragraphs when he does write. There is an account section at the back. The motto is: 'Non solus'. After the index at the end we find: 'Adolphi Vorstii Epistola de obitu V.Cl. Ioannis Meursii ad filium ejus Joannem iuvenem praestantissimum' followed by a short 'epitaphium' for Meursius by his friend A. Buchellius and an elegiac couplet of Nicolaus Heinsius Condition: Title page soiled and a small piece removed from the tip of its right lower corner. Small stamp on the title. 3rd leaf slightly soiled Note: The Greek scholar Theophrastus ca. 370-287 B.C. was a pupil collaborator and successor of Aristotle. He was a scientific researcher rather than a speculative philosophers. Only a small part of Theophrastus' output has been preserved or as Meursius observes at the beginning of this 'liber singularis' of 1640: 'paucis conservatis pleraque interciderunt' 'few works have been saved most have perished'. p. 5 The importance of classification runs through all his extant works including even the brochure known as the Characters' Charaktêres. This collection of 30 descriptive sketches of types of people exhibiting deviations from proper norms of behaviour is nowadays his most famous and most imitated work. § This title of 1640 is the only edition of the last work of the Dutch classicist and historian Johannes Meursius Johannes van Meurs 1579-1639. It consists of 2 parts the first of which p. 1/82 is on the lost works of Theophrastus. Meursius list here 234 works with sources and testimonia. The second part p. 83/111 contains notes and emendations by Meursius on a number of Theophrastus' extant works 'Ioannis Meursii Lectiones Theophrasteae in quibus eorum librorum qui supersunt loca aliquot emendantur'. § Meursius was professor of History and Greek in the university of Leiden from 1610 till 1620. He studied under the genius J.J. Scaliger and is best known for the 'editiones principes' of a number of Byzantine authors that he produced. Meursius' indefatigable labours concerned also the history of ancient Greece and especially Eleusis and the antiquities of Athens and Attica.
