Some very small wormholes near the lower edge keeping far away from any text; holes have occasionally been mended with a layer of thin paper Note: This volume contains the exhaustive and learned lecture notes of Fabio Paolino da Udine or Fabius Paulinus Utinensis on the description of the plague epidemy by the Greek historian Thucydides Thuc. Hist. 2.47-58. This epidemy reached the war-stricken city of Athens in 430 B.C. at the beginning of the Peloponnesian war which lasted from 431 till 404 B.C. Thucydides is the first to describe the social upheaval of a pandemy and its consequences. The identification of what was the cause of this pandemy is until this day a matter of controversy. Fabius Paulinus Utinensis born at Udine ca. 1535 was the very man for a commentary on this subject. 'His first training in Greek and Latin was at Venice with Bernardino Partenio. Later he went to Padua where he graduated in philosophy and medicine but studied rhetoric and Arabic as well. He practiced medicin for a time before he became public professor at Venice where he taught Greek in the School of San Marco and Latin in the Collegio de'Notai. Both chairs he obtained in 1588 as the successor of Bernardino Partenio'. 'Medieval and Renaissance Latin translations and commentaries vol. 8' Washington 2003 p. 180. Paulinus held his lectures in the library of the San Marco Gymnasium. The work starts with a list of 232 questions concerning the possible causes of the pest. Each chapter is preceded by the relevant Greek text and a Latin translation. § On the flyleaf a former owner has written a quotation from Gibbon's 'Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire' chapter XLIII note 90: 'I was indebted to Dr. Hunter for an elaborate commentary on this part of Thucydides the plague of Athens a quarto of 600 pages Ven. 1603 apud Juntas which was pronounced in St. Marks Library by Fabius Paullinus sic Utinensis a physician and philosopher'. These passages of Thucydides helped Gibbon to understand the impact of the pest epidemy which ravaged Konstantinople in 542 under the emperor Iustinian Provenance: Name on the title of 'Joannis Molini'. This must be a relative of one of the 3 senators of the Gymnasium to whom Paulinus dedicates his work. The book is dedicated to 'M. Anto. Head & tail of the spine chafed. Paper yellowing Note: Latin love elegy is more or less an original Roman creation. It is a literary form of which almost every feature is derived from Greek models but it has no analogue in Greek literature. These elegies 'clearly Greek in inspiration are all concerned with love and it is predominantly as a medium for love poetry that the elegy was developed during the first century B.C. . What might be called the classic type of love-elegy the cycle of short poems centred upon the poet's relationship with a single mistress appears to have originated with Cornelius Gallus: his 'Lycoris' . was the prototype of Tibullus' Delia Propertius' Cynthia Ovid's Corinna and Lygdamus' Neaera'. OCD 2nd ed. p. 379 § This edition of Tibullus of 1708 contains what is now called the 'Corpus Tibullianum'. Of this corpus consisting of 4 books only the first two belong to the Latin poet and elegist Tibullus 55-19 B.C. who was probably a Roman knight. The first book deals with the poet's unhappy love for a mistress Delia a married woman probably of a low social status and for a boy named Marathus. The poetic attributes of these lovers are largely conventional but they may really have existed. Book two which is believed to be incomplete celebrates in 3 elegies a new courtesan Nemesis probably also ficticious. There is also an elegy on the blessings of peace and the impression of a rustic festival. The third and fourth book are by the hands of other poets. Book three contains six smooth but wooden elegies by a much inferior poet who calls himself Lygdamus. The 4th book of the Tibullus collection consists of elegies of a very different quality and opens with 211 hexameters on the achievements of Tibullus' patron M. Valerius Messalla Corvinus the 'Panegyricus Messallae'. Incorporated in the 4th books are also a number of short elegies written with a unique frankness by the 'docta puella' Sulpicia a contemporary of Tibullus. § This edition was produced by the Dutch scholar/soldier Joan van Broekhuizen Janus Broukhusius 1649-1707 who during an adventurous life pursued his classical studies and poetry at leisure. His editions of Propertius 1702 and Tibullus laid the foundation for his reputation as a classical scholar. He was admired as a latinist for his taste and for his erudition. First edition of Tilton's biography of American suffragette Victoria Woodhull published shortly before she became the first woman to campaign for President of the United States. 12 mo original wrappers stitched as issued publisher's advertisement at rear. In very good condition. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and half morocco slipcase. Victoria Woodhull first made her reputation as a supporter of free love by which she meant the freedom to marry divorce and bear children without social restriction or government interference and as one of the only female newspaper publishers Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly with her sister Tennessee Claflin. She soon became an activist for women's rights and labor reforms and in a pivotal 1871 speech argued that the 14th and 15th amendments already covered women's suffrage. She decided to run for president in 1872 backed by the Equal Rights Party whose convention nominated Frederick Douglass for Vice President although he did not participate in the convention or acknowledge the nomination. While she obviously lost--and indeed could not have won constitutionally due to her age--Woodhull became one of the most powerful women's rights advocates of her day. This contemporary biography was written by Theodore Tilton a close friend of many within the movement. In 1872 Tilton confided in Elizabeth Cady Stanton that his wife was having an affair with Henry Ward Beecher. Tilton sued Beecher for alienation of affection and a salacious trial commenced. Woodhull abandoned her friendship to splash the scandal across the pages of Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly. Woodhull was arrested for obscenity and then acquitted--events that gave rise to the Comstock Laws of 1873 arguably the nation's most powerful and successful attempt at censorship. Woodhull emerged from the debacle with fewer friends--Susan B. Anthony for example disagreed with her behavior entirely--but nevertheless managed to retain her reputation as a leading supporter of women's rights and as an early American female politician. ‎Very Good. 1983. On offer is an original very interesting vintage manuscript relic of as titled "Two Months on HMS Fearless" handwritten by Royal Navy Midshipman Tim Dewing in 1983. Historians and collectors of life aboard a British Royal Navy ship will notice that while the book is contemporary there are many compatible moments for the young midshipman of the late 20th Century all the way back to the Age of Sail 'middys'. Dewing's journal is a casual affair in a flip top sketch book style book and in it he details the voyage of HMS Fearless a ship noted for being in the Falklands War the year before and more frivolously the ship appeared in a James Bond movie from Portsmouth to Tortola in the Caribbean between January - March 1983. Adding further breadth to the well written narrative with notes on shore leave naval practice and more diary like personal notes on how he feels during the passage are several hand-drawn sketches. There are 52 pages or so along with another 20 pages separate hand-written 'booklet' entitled 'Puerto Rico 1983' tucked in. Tim Dewing was a Junior Navigator at the time who later went on to run the Navigation Training Department at the Britannia Royal Naval Training College at Dartmouth; he ended his naval career at Whitehall. He is currently the managing director of a large soft drinks company based in Devon. Included is a Dewing's sight form book containing his navigation entries for 1984 a State of Sea printed booklet light recognition printed booklet and an artic survival printed booklet all of which came with the journal.
