The first volume bears a mention of fifth edition undated but certainly published at the same date as The second tour in 1820. This fourth volume is generally never joined with the first three it is only found separately. One will note that it is not entitled the fourth tour but appears as a new book apart. Officially one considers indeed that there are three books which compose the journeys. We count 30 plates for volume I 24 for the second and third and 19 for the last. ‎New York New York NY. Good. 1861. On offer are two handwritten manuscript diaries written by William Dufour of New York City. We are not sure of the precise connection but these diaries came from a Scenery Hill Pennsylvania estate and connected to famed Civil War Governor Curtin of Pennsylvania. Further research should establish the connection. Mr. Dufour identifies himself on the fep of the earliest diary. While no war content these diaries are fascinating for the fact that these diaries are a look at the New York social scene and the gender sensibilities of the times. Young Dufour is obsessed with relationships with the girls around him. He has no problem expressing his most intimate thoughts and in fact writes whole essays about a few particular girls in the memoranda section of the book. The diaries detail his ups and downs with the various young women in his social strata and he is extremely active. Also of considerable interest are the changes William has gone through between 1861 and 1864. His issues and problems are the same but they have matured as he has. These diaries will provide a treasure trove of early New York and civil war era genealogists and social studies observers. 1861 is in somewhat rougher shape of the two some text blocks lose and old dampstaining though very legible. 1864 is in very good shape. Hoddesdon Herts Hoddesdon 28 février 1871 13.50 x 21 cm 4 pages sur un double feuillet et un simple Autograph letter signed on the Vazimba pepople of Madagascar Unpublished autograph letter signed by William Ellis four pages in black ink on one folded leaf and one single leaf. Interesting letter by Rev. William Ellis missionary for the London Missionary Society in Madagascar and author of the earliest preserved photographs of the island. A beautiful testimony of Ellis' ethnographic approach far from the ""theory of the savage"" commonly conveyed in European societies. He gives his interlocutor precious information on the Vazimba still unidentified in the 19th century and described by first explorers as a warlike pygmy people living in the Malagasy mountains. Ellis is very critical of the fantasized descriptions of his predecessors and favors the direct testimonies of the inhabitants keeping the memory of this extinct people. Author of several books on Malagasy history Ellis describes in detail the legends on the Vazimba believed to be the island's first inhabitants characterized by their small size and reddened skin. Ellis doubted the accounts of explorers Flacourt 1648 and Abbé Rochon 1768 who referred to this people as ""Kimos"" or ""Quimos"" and described them as a ""dwarf race"". He relies more on the testimonies of the island's inhabitants collected during his travels among the Hovas and the Betsiles reporting the fear and respect that Vazimba spirits and burials still inspired. The letter gathers and criticizes current knowledge on the subject and mentions the experience of his successor Rev. Charles Jukes of the London Missionary Society for whom he celebrated a mass sending him to proclaim the Gospel on July 8 1866. In this letter he mentions a hypothesis later confirmed by modern scientific research: the Vazimba are one of the founding communities of the island at the origin of the Malagasy language and culture. ""… By the Hova's & others who spoke of them they were called Vazimba. They were said to be smaller in stature and lighter in colour than the Hovas & to be regarded with superstitious feelings by the other inhabitants who hold their tombs in extreme veneration & frequently offer at their tombs sacrifices or gifts to the spirits of the Vazimba. During my own intercourse with people on the coast & in the interior I made repeated enquiries but never met with a native who had seen a Vazimba. Their graves I saw frequently in my journeys among the people in the interior. I saw also many of their tombs at which offerings had been recently presented and found that many of the people regarded them with superstitious fear and seemed exceedingly afraid of doing any thing likely offend them. The Hovas didn't appear to know anything of the name of Kimos all elapses of whom I enquired call the diminutive race Vazimba & spoke of them as the ancient or earliest inhabitants of the country. … My friend informed me that the Betsiles do not speak of the Vazimba as remarkable on account of their small size or light colour many of the Hovas are of quite a light colour. . My own opinion is that the Vazimba are the dwarf of which early writers speak & that they are not as diminutive as they have been represented to be. As our missionaries now occupy the Betsiles country I have no doubt we shall soon have reliable accounts of the Vazimba relating of their present condition as well as their traditions of the past. If the foregoing statements should prove in any way revocable it will be gratifying so."" A fascinating and well-documented study on the customs and origins of Madagascar's inhabitants by one of the main historians of the island in the 19th century. ‎1915 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A YOUNG MAN WORKING HIS FIRST JOB AS A FOREST RANGER WITH DUTIES THAT INCLUDE DRAWING MAPS SURVEYING HOMESTEADS AND FIGHTING RAGING FOREST FIRES AND ANTAGONISTIC RANCHERS‎

‎MEDICINE BOW NATIONAL FOREST WYOMING WY. Very Good. 1915. On offer is an interesting diary written in the early 20th century by William F. Will a young forest ranger working in the Medicine Bow National Forest of Wyoming. The diary kept a log of his daily activities from April 1 1915 to January 31 1916. There is an entry for every day during this time period. Will’s duties were many and varied and he often logged the hours spent on each task in the diary. The young ranger spent a good deal of time throughout the course of the year working on several maps showing boundaries domestic grazing allotments telephone lines several types of fire maps and others. “Finished drawing protractors on fire location map and wrote memo on some. Started to make a map showing location of stool-boxes and caches etc.” After reporting for duty on May 24 at Laramie a great deal of his time was spent in the repair and installation of telephone lines. Especially in the summer months Will often joined other Park Service employees to fight forest fires often for several days at a time. He also monitored campsites to make sure fire prevention techniques were being followed by the residents or campers. He was called upon to search for a missing woman and on one occasion he even searched for a lost horse. In the fall he helped build a bunk house at Brooklyn Lake and got ready for winter by moving the horses to a ranch and making mouse proof storerooms. The firefights make for very interesting reads. For example: “July 17 1915. Rode Woolfs range with him and Herder. Showed him the allotment lines and the closed area around Brooklyn Lake. Started out on telephone work but lookout man reported Turpin Lake Sawmill on fire at 1:30. Duther called up and said to wait until he talked over long distance. He called up and said to get Chase and go to the fire.arrived at fire at 6pm then rode to Turpin Saw mill found four of Bueoly’s men there. Men started to arrive at fire had 9 men on fire that night. Fire suppression - 11 Hrs. Munroe the camp watchman stated the fire started from the sawdust pile and he tried to stop it from burning the mill but found it impossible to check the timber fire.” The grazing of domestic livestock was permitted in the park in certain areas. This practice continues today and is still the subject of some controversy. It was one of the ranger's duties to make sure that the boundaries for grazing were adhered to. There were times when the local ranchers and the Park Service employees did not get along “August 18. Rode over to So ____ Fork hunted up the herder. I told him the sheep had been in my pasture and he had to keep them out. Then rode the range between Brooklyn Lake and Coney Ridge and found a little pocket that Woolf had just run through.Started to storm hail and ran so started back to Brooklyn Lake.”; “June 8. Repaired telephone line Rayfork to Ropers ranch got wire all spliced but not tied in called on Roper to see about moving telephone camp in there. He informed me that his place was closed to all Forest Service men and we could not stop there and he wanted all Forest Service equipment at his place including telephone taken from there.” Census records of 1910 show a William F Will living with his parents in Laramie WY. The Census shows his year of birth as 1897 making him 18 years old when he joined the Park Service. The diary measures about 3 1/2" x 6 1/2". It was issued by the US Department of Agriculture. The front page reads: “United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Notice. This book is Government property. The finder is requested to mail it to The Forester Washington D.C. or to deliver it to any officer of the Forest Service. There are over over 150 handwritten pages. The covers and spine are in good condition both aesthetically and structurally. The pages within are without any age-toning or significant rips or tears. The paper is a grid-lined yellow paper. The handwriting is easy to read and legible throughout in black ink and without significant fading or smudging. The first journal 151 pp. is autobiographic in nature detailing highlights of his childhood such as teachers where his family lived and so on. Overall this is a super post World War I pre-Depression Era through the beginning of World War II archive. In depth and detailed to the point one imagines that William was obsessive compulsive in nature as he never failed to note the weather record the river's height and temperature baseball stats aviation firsts and triumphs railroad tragedies and in later years the news from Europe and any other scrap of information that crossed his radar screen - local collectors and historians plus Americana enthusiasts will be delighted at this picture of the times. Using ledger style notebooks with a margin William notes important information with a red underlined 'FLASH'. Other writings in these 1100 pages tell of him and a few friends going on a road trip to Chicago which took over 16 hours to go 300 miles; of their mishaps and sights seen attending the General Encampment of the Modern Woodsman Foresters; election news; a train trip to Colorado and world and local news."Ray Keech breaking the speed record taking it from Capt. ‎Northwest Territories Alberta Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1901. Non-Book. On offer is a fascinating letter relating to the death of an early Scottish immigrant to Canada Mr. Angus Fraser. The letter written by William G. Hutchinson a lawyer from Lamerton Alberta to John Angus Fraser the deceased man's son who is residing in Indian Hat Northwest Territories. Dated February 8 1901 this letter touches on some interesting topics including Fraser's "half breed" half French "friend" to whom he left his estate the contents of his estate and references his family still in Scotland. A very interesting legal document that provides strings for a Canadian researcher to pull to learn more about social cultural and mobility norms of the time and place. The letter reads: "Mr John Angus Fraser - Indian Head NWT.In answer to yours of 28th ulto I beg to say that Mr. Angus Fraser died at his residence Spring Hill Ranch about 16 miles from here sometime in the beginning of last November. I wrote his Sister resided near Dundee in Scotland telling her of his death a few days after it occurred. I also informed her that by a will made shortly before he died he had left everything to one Batisse Anasse a French half-breed with whom he had been on terms of friendship for many years. Mr. E Taylor Mr B. Coy Winnipeg was administrator of the Estate. He would be able to give you all particulars if you write him. Hutchinson PM Lamerton Alta". BIO NOTES: John Angus Fraser 1870- was born in Scotland and came to Canada in 1890. He settled in the Indian Head area of the Territories and worked as a labourer. He married Clarissa Aline Thompson originally from Ontario Canada and they had at least two children. His father Angus lived in Alberta a few miles from Lamerton. Lamerton began as a country trading post the original Buffalo Lake Trading Post where furs were bought and supplies sold by Fletcher Bredin in the late 1800's. In 1893 he opened the post office in his store and renamed the post Lamerton. After the turn of the century it grew into a village. The letter is handwritten by Hutchinson on Buffalo Lake Trading Co. On offer is a very unique pair of original 1948 - 1949 manuscript relics of Antarctic exploration being a diary and typed proposal with tucked in ephemera handwritten by "Wm. Gwynn Thomas Base F Argentine Islands West Graham Land" a crew member of the British Falkland Island - Argentine Island Base Camps for supply and research to the Antarctic Region. The main book is a handwritten diary and then there is a typed diary of a special expedition. The author does an exceptional job putting the reader right in the thick of this most interesting and historically well known island group. Dated February 24th 1948 through January 22nd 1949 he writes approximately 100 pages this is a triplicate book ruled feint lines - the carbon has only been used to copy one sheet at a time not triplicate of everyday life from the mundane daily chores on what they ate weather the dogs they had with them the maintenance tasks they had to undertake etc. and the many trials and tribulations of one living in a weather challenged remote and contested area. Along with the book there is a typescript journal on loose sheets of paper. By way of an introduction it begins: 'The John Biscoe arrived at Base F this evening and we met the chaps who were leaving when we took over. I went ashore fairly early and stayed chatting with the boys until quite late. The four who had been here a year seemed very pleased that their time was up & that they were getting out of it at last. Burd met the base leader Watson and Reeve the two general assistants and Stock wireless operator. From their tales I gather they have had quite a pleasant year one or two complaints but nothing serious. Most of the time we were together Stock & I discussed the radio set up here; he said he had managed to keep communications going very well during the year but did not have much to say in praise of the transmitter which in his opinion was too low powered for this job and suggested a bigger transmitter would greatly ease the work. March 31 It has been very cold today but I managed to keep fairly warm. Dave and Frank caught four seals this afternoon and had a bit of a job getting them back through the brash ice. April 1 Frank overhauled the small German engine today but it is of no use there's more rust than engine. I worked on the Villiers and had great success for a change. August 29 Base A party have got back safely so the 'panic stations' is over. Apparently they had been cut off and have had quite a time. The proposal was that a party of five with four teams should set out on a journey to Snow Hill Island with the object of completing the survey and geology of Ross Island.Weds Sept 1st to Thurs Sept 30th including a summary page on number of days miles made good total miles accumulative average etc & a report on the Condition of Hut of Swedish Expedition on Snow Hill Island. This document does not seem to be for the same year as the larger journal as there is no mention of a Sledge trip in there for September. HISTORICAL NOTES: RRS John Biscoe 1944 1584 tonnes operated from 1947-55. Named after the English explorer John Biscoe who discovered parts of Antarctica in the early 1830s. When a party of British scientists attempted to land from John Biscoe at Hope Bay Graham Land on February 2 1952 an Argentine shore party fired shots over their head ref Wikipedia There is a hand drawn map of the Argentine Islands where Base F is marked. ‎QUINCY ILLINOIS IL. Fair. 1882. On offer is an original 1882 handwritten manuscript journal written by a law student at the Chaddock College in Quincy Illinois. The book begins: "Wm. H. Henry's Book Chaddock College Jan. 11th 1882. Record of cases give to the "Commercial Law Class" by "Chief Justice Long" and the decisions thereof during the winter term at "Chaddock College." "Will Ever remember the fun we had in this class and how earnestly we argued. Research suggest this young man becomes a well known Indiana lawyer and member of the Socialist Party of America. Here are some snippets: 1st day "left mine at home." You Old Man Ray." A total of thirty-four handwritten pages having to do with the cases regarding; Canal boat damage custody for a child medical college donation flour mill vs. Sheppard & Hopkings Co. broken marriage promise promissory notes undertakers case Net Exchange Bank vs. William Reinhart stolen horse and carriage and other contracts. "Chaddock College Law Department Quincy Ill 1-14-82 Case 2 The plaintiff who was a merchant doing business in Quincy Ill. On the first day of May 1878 furnished clothing for the defender's child to the amount of $100. It appeared upon the trial that the defendant and his wife had lived unhappy together and that the wife had finely separated from him for good cause on account of ill-treatment. There had been a contest for the custody of their only child age 10 years which had been awarded by the Supreme Court to the mother. The child continued to live with the mother against the father's will and he was ready to support it at his own house. She had no separate property sufficient for her own and child's support…." "Mock Court Law School Chaddock College Quincy Ill. 1882 Case 6 Miss A. sues B. for breach of promise of marriage alleging that mutual promise to marry on request was made between them on Jan. 1 1877 and that she had on the 1 day of July 1878 requested the defendant to marry who had refused to do so. To this action B. makes two defenses. First that when the promise was made Miss. A. was under an engagement to marry another person C. and that the fact of this prior engagement was not communicated to him. Second that when the engagement to the plaintiff was made B. was in good health but that on the first day of June 1878 he became seriously ill and has so continued up to the time of this action and that on the first day of July last his health did not admit of his _________into the marriage contract with safety to himself and ………" After the cases are pages heading "Thomas W. Henry's Sale Book" There are quite a few names listed here and and research suggest most of them are from the Quincy area. Some of those last names are; Cassidy Lawrance Myers Atkins Dunlap Jolley Breeden Caldwell Walker Reed West Brandon Seaman Moberly and more. The journal has a marbled cover but it's not in good condition. The binding is also loose and it looks like there has been slight water damage. It measures about 7 ½" x 9 ½". ‎1795 FASCINATING ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN STUDY NOTEBOOK OF GEOMETRY TRIGONOMETRY SURVEYING AND MORE COMPLEX MATHEMATICS FROM A YOUNG MAN STUDYING AT AMERICA’S MOST RESPECTED UNIVERSITY‎

‎HARVARD UNIVERSITY BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1795. On offer is an exceptional and fascinating handwritten notebook of many different and varied aspects of geometry arithmetic trigonometry finance and surveying written by a young man studying at Harvard University in 1795. The book is a terrific example of mathematical and surveying studies at the end of the 18th century especially as it happens at one of the greatest institutes of learning in America. As such these books are incredibly rare to find outside of university archives. The front cover page reveals the man’s name William Hardy written in beautiful gothic hand lettering. “Definitions” which given the definitions of a point line chord curve tangent angle and many other mathematical terms. Going from that base most probably learned in the first day or so of classes the book goes into an exceptional number of intermediate mathematical topics. The study book then begins its main sections under the title: “ELEMENTS or First Rudiments of PLAIN Geometry” which give three “POSTULATES” as well as a number of “Terms Used in Geometry.” From these postulates and terms the book gives 34 “Geometrical Problems” spanning nine pages. A problem is given such as “To describe any pentagon in any given circle” and then a diagram is drawn next to it. The next part continues the study of planar geometry with a number of pages on the “Construction of the Plain Scale.” This section ends with a full page diagram of “THE PLAIN SCALE” that is certainly a thing of mathematical beauty. There follow a few pages of “Another Method of constructing P. Scale” and ending with another full page “PLAIN SCALE.” The notebook then dives into “Plain Trigonometry” followed by “A Solution of Cases of R. Ang. Triangles” and a section “Of Oblique Ang. Trigonometry.” After all this background mathematics the notebook then begins on what this class was most probably based around. The section is entitled “Surveying” and a definition is given: “Surveying in the largest sense of the word is the measuring laying out dividing and leveling land. Mensuration consists of three parts. 1. Measuring the fields. 2. Protracting it. 3. Casting up the contents.” Each of these parts is explained in detail with surveying “rules” and accompanied alongside a number of case problems in which the rule is used to solve practical problems that would arise in this profession. The section contains a number of charts diagrams of shapes and angles and long-form mathematical calculations to solve the problem at hand. This section is 18 pages long and makes up one of the longest sections of the book. Though the next section “Mensuration of Superficies and solids” is a bit of a mathematical addendum to the surveying section. This chapter has 35 ‘Articles’ explaining different problems and aspects of Euclidian geometry such as: “Art. 6. To measure a triangle.”; “Art. 11. To measure any regular polygon.”; “Art. 22. To find the area of a semicircle the diameter being given.”; “Art. 28. To measure a cube” and many more. Each of these articles comes with an explanation of the article at hand as well as diagrams charts and examples needed to understand the problem. This section is followed by a number of sections on mathematical finance. The first sections are: “Simple Interest “Interest by Decimals” “Discount” and “Discount by Decimals.” They again include rules on how to calculate interest/discounts alongside questions and examples to use the knowledge practically. For example: Rule 2 Exm. Calculate the interest of £327.10 at 6 percent per annum for 210 days.”. It is of interest to note that Hardy uses pounds shillings and pence for the financial equations here. Why he doesn’t use the American Dollar which had been officially set up in 1792 is very interesting. It could be that the pound was still the de facto currency base for educated young men to know but I do not have a definitive answer to this question. There are also a number of pages under the title “Barter” which is explained as “The exchanging of one commodity for another and teaches traders to proportion their quantities without cost.” It is essentially just mathematical equivalencies. More finance follows with sections about “Loss and Gain” “Equation of Payments”“Discount by Compound Interest” “Annuities or Payments in of Compound Interest” and “Annuities Leases &c. Taken in Reversion at Compound Interest.” The study book then returns back to equivalencies with two sections: “Alligation Medial” which is used to find the quantity of a mixture given the quantities of its ingredients and “Alligation Alternate” which is used to find the amount of each ingredient needed to make a mixture of a given quantity. Finally the last section deals with mathematical “Permutations and Combinations.” The cover of the book is a brown burlap which is faded and discolored. The both the front and back cover boards are warped. The book no longer lies flat as the top and bottom of the book both curl upward noticeably. Many of the pages have some discoloration or wear from use and age especially on the edges. Many of the pages are only precariously bound to the spine. The book is roughly 125 pages in length of which there is writing on all but a few. All the writing in the book is in very good condition. Some of the blank ink used shows some fading but for the most part the ink used was probably very good quality as much of it still looks very good. This book is over 220 years old and as such is quite fragile. It should be treated with care.
