Woodcut printer's mark on the title depicting a celestial sphere flanked by Tempus and Hercules motto: 'Indefessus agendo'. This is the second volume of a two volume set. The first volume was published in 1645 by Blaeu simply as 'Poemata' Condition: Vellum age-toned. Old name on the title. Faint waterstain in the upper and lower margin of most quires. Note: When he was one year old the Flemish parents of the Dutch polymath poet theologian and historian Caspar Barlaeus 1584-1648 had to flee Antwerp for the 'Spanish fury'. 'They settled in Zaltbommel where his father eventually would become head of the Latin school. Caspar studied theology and philosophy at the University of Leiden. After his study he preached for 1.5 years in the village of Nieuwe-Tonge before returning to Leiden in 1612 as an under-regent of a college. From 1617 he also was professor in philosophy at the university. Because of his remonstrant sympathies he was forced out of this job in 1619. He then studied and graduated in medicines in Caen but never practiced professionally. . From 1631 he was professor of philosophy and rhetoric at the Amsterdam Athenaeum Athenaeum Illustre which is commonly regarded as the predecessor of the University of Amsterdam. . Barlaeus published many volumes of poetry particularly Latin poetry. He also wrote the eulogy that accompanies the 1622 portrait of cartographer Willem Blaeu' the father of Johannes Blaeu the publisher of this fourth enlarged edition of 1645-1646. British Royal Navy admiral who saw extensive service in the American Revolutionary War the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic War. ALS 1p 7¼" X 8½" tipped to heavy album leaf of same size Spithead off coast of southern England 1800 November 2. Addressed to "Gentlemen." Near fine. Writing from aboard "His Maj. Ship Phoebe" Barlow remarks: "Mr Sewell the Kings Advocate General of Lower Canada informs me by letter of the 14th Augt. last -- that he has transmitted to you as set of Bills payable to me or order. I request you will send them to me under cover. my reason for not having them sent to Portsmouth is that we are only waiting a fair wind to sail for Ireland." Handsomely penned. A scant three months later 2 February 1801 at the Straits of Gibraltar Barlow would for the second time in his career capture a French frigate -- for which victory he was knighted and given command of the HMS Triumph in the Mediterranean. Fine copy. Barnabé Farmian Durosy or de Rozoi 1745-1792 was a journalist and man of letters from Toulouse at once playwright poet novelist historian and essayist. Founder and editor of a royalist daily newspaper in 1789 he was the first journalist to die by guillotine under the Terror. Henri IV ou la Bataille d'Ivry was deemed worthy of some twenty performances in Paris Versailles Toulouse and Brussels between 1774 and 1795. Antoine Rivarol seems to have been the only one to show enthusiasm for his lyrical work. It was necessary wrote the author of Discours sur l'universalité de la langue française in 1788 for ""poetic youth"" to forget ""the Voltaires the Racines and the Corneilles"" and take as model the one whose name ""flies from mouth to mouth on the wing of vaudeville."" A New System of Agriculture; or A Plain and Easy and Demonstrative Method of Speedily Growing Rich: Proving by undeniable Arguments that Every Land-Owner in England may advance his Estate to a Double Value in the Space of One Year's Time together with several very curious instructions how to feed oxen cows and sheep to much greater profit than has ever yet been known in England. First edition 1755. pp 182 lacking a small corner from the last page without loss of text. Fussell does not identify the 'Country Gentleman' and is slightly credulous of the claim made on the title page. He notes that there was then no copy in the British Museum. bound with BENJAMIN STILLINGFLEET. Miscellaneous Tracts Relating to Natural History Husbandry and Physick translated from the Latin with notes. First edition 1759. pp xxx 230. Contains Linnaeus Oration concerning travelling in one's own country; Biberg's Oeconomy of Nature; Barck On the foliation of trees; Gedner Of the use of Curiosity; Beyerstein's Obstacles to the improvement of physic; Haffelgren's The Swedish Pan and the author's own Observations on Grasses which Fussell praises as an important paper. bound with FRANCIS HOME The Principles of Agriculture and Vegetation. Second edition 1759. pp viii 207 the last few pages foxed. Fussell observes that Home made a very real contribution to agricultural sciences; and Sir John Russell comments -"The book is a great advance on anything that had gone before it not only because it recognizes that plant nutrition depends on several factors but because it indicates so clearly the two methods to be followed in studying the problem - pot cultures and plant analysis". Generally quite clean and firm internally though with slight age-toning.
