War terrorism natural disaster vandalism and neglect make the work of preservation a greater challenge than it has been since World War II. Cloonan makes the case that at this critical juncture we must consider preservation in the broadest possible contexts. Preservation requires the efforts of an increasing number of stakeholders.In order to explore the cultural political technological economic and ethical dimensions of preservation Cloonan examines particular monuments and their preservation dilemmas. The massive Bamiyan Buddhas blown up by the Taliban in 2001 are still the subject of debates over how or whether to preserve what remains and the US National Park Service has undertaken the complex task of preserving the symbolic and often ephemeral objects that visitors leave at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial-to take just two of the many examples described in the book. This book is primarily a bibliographical study of all the known works printed and published by John Rodker 1894-1955 at the Ovid Press London 1919-1922 and the associated projects connected to his second imprint the Casanova Society. The Ovid Press's output was not prolific - 17 known items were produced - but the nature of the works and the context in which they were created reveals a great deal about both Rodker and several central figures of modernist literature and art including T.S. Eliot Henri Gaudier-Brzeska James Joyce Wyndham Lewis Ezra Pound and Edward Wadsworth. The book's introduction includes a biographical account of Rodker's life focusing especially on his early life and his printing activities at the Ovid Press which he operated with some participation from his then wife the British novelist Mary Butts 1890-1937. Relying heavily on correspondence and other archival sources such as Rodker's personal and professional papers and his diary the introduction documents the production of many of the Ovid Press titles and Rodker's interaction with his authors. The descriptive bibliography which follows the introductory matter includes full collations detailed copy-specific notes on each item institutional locations for Ovid Press publications and attempts to reconcile the discrepancies between Rodker's colophon statements and the books he actually printed-based on careful analysis of extant copies of Ovid Press titles. The book accounts for a number of unrecorded bibliographical details in these works and clarifies Rodker's role in the production of Ezra Pound's "Bel Esprit" and the errata sheets for Joyce's Ulysses Egoist Press/John Rodker 1922. Gerald W. Cloud is Curator for Literature in Columbia University's Rare Book & Manuscript Library and Lecturer in English and Comparative Literature at Columbia where he teaches Bibliography and the History of the Book. On offer is an original huge archive of handwritten and typescript communication and orders sent to a bookseller for books related to the circus clowns performing animals and carnivals. Circa 1970s - 1980s this archive includes many items on circus or clown letterhead business cards from circus operators and performers and postal covers with stamps from all over the USA Canada UK and Australia. While some of the letters are lists of book orders relating to the circus others are correspondence directly from the circus performers themselves many contain illustrated circus advertising as well as autographs from performers and operators. There is a sensational mix of material here.Most of the letters are addressed to Frank Barry whose book selling business was located in Philadelphia. There are 230 individual letters/postal covers with most containing several pages of enclosures with an estimated 500 pages of circus material for the collector to sort through. ‎WILMORE KANSAS KS. Good. 1930. On offer is a fascinating original archive of 60 original romantic manuscript letters remarkably addressed to George Redfield of Wilmore Kansas during the 1930s. Uniquely George received letters from at least 5 different girls and while this might classify him as a western lothario sadly it looks like he never married though many were interested. One of his most fervent correspondents was Clyda Wheeler of Coldwater Kansas. Clyda and George have a very interesting on and off relationship. Clyda eventually married Charles Biddle Gregg of Coldwater on October 3rd 1936. In one letter Clyda is very upset and tells him off. She says in part: "Dear Geo. I'm sorry I have to start this letter this way but I'm kinda disgusted with you�" Her next letter after this one is a little over a month after and she apologizes for it. The earliest letter is June 3rd 1930 and the last letter is December 1st 1936. Here are some snippets: "June 3rd 1930 Dear Friend I hardly know what to write. We got her yesterday morning St. Louis and I have been on the go ever since. I just got back from Forest Park a little while ago�.Auntie is asleep and Minnie the darkie is getting supper. Aunt Alice is upstairs; don't know what for and Curt and my uncle are not here. Well I'll have to close for now. Your best friend Elizabeth Nevens. My address is; Miss Elizabeth Nevens 780 Radcliff University City St. Louis Mo." "June 7th 1930 Dear George I just received you letter. I had just got up when Auntie brought them in. I was sure tickled when I found a letter from you. We went to Municipal Opera last night. Excuse the writing. Junior turned on the radio and the dog is singing. I wish you could hear him. He'd tickle a brass monkey. Well I was starting to tell you about the Municipal Opera it sure is wonderful.
