An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925 with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war the editor-in-chief having been called up for service. It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start this sumptuous publication “was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society” Françoise Tétart-Vittu “La Gazette du bon ton” in Dictionnaire de la mode 2016 and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot known as Cochin later used in 1946 by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils heightened in colors some highlighted in gold or palladium. The story began in 1912 when Lucien Vogel a man of the world involved in fashion he had already been part of the fashion magazine Femina decided with his wife Cosette de Brunhoff – the sister of Jean creator of Babar – to set up the Gazette du bon ton subtitled at the time: “Art fashion frivolities.” Georges Charensol noted the reasoning of the editor-in-chief: “’In 1910’ he observed ‘there was no really artistic fashion magazine nothing representative of the spirit of the time. My dream was therefore to make a luxury magazine with truly modern artists…I was assured of success because when it comes to fashion no country on earth can compete with France.’” “Un grand éditeur d’art. Lucien Vogel” in Les Nouvelles littéraires no. 133 May 1925. The magazine was immediately successful not only in France but also in the United States and Latin America. At first Vogel put together a team of seven artists: André-Édouard Marty and Pierre Brissaud followed by Georges Lepape and Dammicourt as well as eventually his friends from school and the School of Fine Arts like George Barbier Bernard Boutet de Monvel and Charles Martin. Other talented people soon came flocking to join the team: Guy Arnoux Léon Bakst Benito Boutet de Monvel Umberto Brunelleschi Chas Laborde Jean-Gabriel Domergue Raoul Dufy Édouard Halouze Alexandre Iacovleff Jean Émile Laboureur Charles Loupot Chalres Martin Maggie Salcedo. These artist mostly unknown when Lucien Vogel sought them out later became emblematic and sought-after artistic figures. It was also they who worked on the advertising drawings for the Gazette. The plates put the spotlight on and celebrate dresses by seven designers of the age: Lanvin Doeuillet Paquin Poiret Worth Vionnet and Doucet. The designers provided exclusive models for each issue. Nonetheless some of the illustrations are not based on real models but simply on the illustrator’s conception of the fashion of the day. The Gazette du bon ton was an important step in the history of fashion. Combining aesthetic demands with the physical whole it brought together – for the first time – the great talents of the artistic literary and fashion worlds; and imposed through this alchemy a completely new image of women: slender independent and daring which was shared by the new generation of designers including Coco Chanel Jean Patou Marcel Rochas and so on… Taken over in 1920 by Condé Montrose Nast the Gazette du bon ton was an important influence on the new layout and aesthetics of that “little dying paper” that Nast had bought a few years earlier: Vogue. Fold mark inherent to being placed in envelope. Maurice Thorez praises the decisive intervention of comrade Pierre Frumensan in the battle that unites them: ""C'est une dure bataille mais les résultats en sont déjà sensibles dans tous les domaines."" ""It is a hard battle but the results are already noticeable in all areas."" and also rejoices in his better health: ""Vous voyez que j'écris désormais de la main gauche. C'est plus que je ne l'avais espéré un certain temps ! "" ""You see that I now write with my left hand. This is more than I had hoped for some time!"" On January 23 1953 Pierre frumusan signed with nine other communist physicians: Yves Cachin Jean Dalsace Hector Descomps Henri Chrétien dit Baussary Paul Hertzog H.F. Klotz Victor Lafitte Raymond Leibovici and Jeanne Lévy a declaration against ""A group of terrorist physicians"" who had just ""been discovered in the Soviet Union. . They have been unmasked as American intelligence agents; some of them had been recruited through the Joint an international Zionist organization."" This text appeared on January 27 in l'Humanité. On March 6 1953 l'Humanité announced ""Stalin is dead"" then on April 6 1953 on page one ""The accused physicians were arrested wrongly. They are fully rehabilitated. This book presenting every style of the famed artist from Montmartre was published on the occasion of his exhibition in 1947 at the Paul Pétridès gallery. This book presenting every aesthetic period of Montmartre artist Maurice Utrillo was published for his 1947 exhibition at the Paul Pétridès gallery. Mounted at the front of the book an autograph sonnet entitled ""L'Art pictural"" signed by Maurice Utrillo and addressed to Francisque Poulbot; two quatrains and two tercets written in black ink on lined paper. Before the poem Utrillo specified: ""Sonnet par Maurice Utrillo V < dédié à son ami et confrère < Georges Kars."" Sonnet by Maurice Utrillo V < dedicated to his friend and colleague < Georges Kars Signed and inscribed by Utrillo a second time at the top of the sheet: ""Amicalement à Francisque Poulbot"". A few stains to the margins not affecting reading. The sonnet was published in ART vol. 2 October 1934-July 1935 p. 9. This beautiful poem a true poetic manifest of pictorial independence twice signed by Utrillo is dedicated to cartoonist Francisque Poulbot a key figure in Montmartre society. It brings together iconic figures of the “Butte” famous for their bohemian life and eternal drunkenness: Utrillo Poulbot and Georges Kars a Cubist artist of Czech origin living in Montmartre whose paintings are celebrated by Utrillo in the sonnet. Utrillo wrote this manuscript in 1928 to Francisque Poulbot former classmate of the Lycée Rollin who had become a renowned draughtsman goguettier and founder of the République de Montmartre. Poulbot sketched the painter many times in his beloved Montmartre streets brush in one hand and bottle in the other the silhouette of the Sacré-Coeur church looming in the distance. Utrillo and Poulbot both stayed at some point in their lives at 12 rue Cortot where the Musée de Montmartre is now located. The year he wrote this poem Utrillo painted a superb gouache of Poulbot's house on avenue Junot. Although known for his paintings Utrillo also found in poetry a form of redemption for his bouts of alcohol-induced hysteria. Considered by his friends as a ""builder of sonnets or dithyrambic quatrains"" his verses were praised by famed critic Félix Fénéon. Utrillo also used poetry to celebrate his Montmartre artist neighbors. He wrote this poem in honor of Czech painter Georges Kars thanking him for a striking portrait of him exhibited at the Berthe Weill gallery: « … Qu'il me soit donc ici permis en compagnon Sincère et noble et pur en non troubleur en rond Sur cet Art pictural d'émettre un trait austère Georges Kars en ce lieu de digne réunion Rue Laffitte chez Weill de l'art porte-fanion S'affirme en ses tableaux inventif et sincère. » Kars had settled in Montmartre in 1908 and spent many summers in Cadaquès with his wife Utrillo and his mother Suzanne Valadon. In these verses dedicated to the lines of ""his friend and colleague"" Kars Utrillo celebrates the independence and aesthetic personality emancipated from any artistic movement which also characterized Utrillo's own style. ‎BARTLESVILLE OKLAHOMA 1936. On offer is a charming original 1936 manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman named Mavis Bazel. The book is dated from January 1 1936 through June 15 1936 with approximately 190 detailed pages. We estimate Mavis is 15 or 16 years old and as is typical of teenagers she has many passions: Mavis is crazy about Nelson Eddy catching his show in Tulsa igniting a desire to take singing lessons which would cost $2 per month. Seeing in person "the Dixie Melody Masters" and rolled up the rug and danced; learning to ice skate for the first time she became obsessed with it; likes Duke a lot but he has bad complexion and need not see him anymore she does continue to see him then dumps him he falls for her girlfriend and she likes him again listened to many hockey games on station WVOO; intensely interested in local men and women's basketball games in surrounding towns of Norman Dewey Barnsdall Bristow Coffeyville Copan Tulsa Phillips Wann Collinsville Claremore. She's a regular girl without apparent physical or emotional ailments except for frequent colds. She enjoys going to the drugstore for sandwiches and hot chocolate plays the new game Monopoly on Feb. 14 1936 writes poetry and hopes to go to college preferring the school to be farther away from home. Mavis gets her hair cut/washed/set regularly and has a 10 year old sister Peggy. She gets a summer job and the diary ends on June 14 1936. Mavis makes noteworthy mentions of films an current events: Jan 17 1936 "Rudyard Kipling died this evening at 7" Jan 21 1936 "King George of England died - King Edward the 8th ascended throne" mentions "Bruno Richard Hauptmann the alleged kidnapper of the Lindburgh baby". Films/plays include Anne of Green Gables Becky Sharpe with Miriam Hopkins which Mavis comments on as being "terribly over-acted" Magnificent Obsession with Robert Taylor and Irene Dunn commented upon as "cool" and Small Town Girl with Robert Taylor and Janet Gaynor. The 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" book's front cover is loose but attached several pages ripped out towards the end of diary otherwise the contents look great and is overall G. Good. 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall.
