Supposedly the youngest soldier to enlist in the Civil War; others such as Johnny Clem born 1851 the "Union Drummer Boy of Chickamauga" were indeed younger although Clem did not carry a weapon until later was not officially mustered in and his wages were paid out of donations by the officers. Morefield's credentials therefore appear sound. ALS 1p 8" X 10" Elkhorn WI 1892 March 10. Addressed to W.E. Ambler. Near fine. Slight mailing folds. To a journalist or scholar researching Morefield's claim to fame Morefield transmits a photograph "Coppied from a tin tipe that I had taken soon after I Enlisted" not present. He agrees to "write up my Army Experience I dont know jest what you want do you want to know whare the Regiments went and What we went through I will say this much to you if it hendent of been for the Exposure of Camp life and picket duty and Rheumatism and diseases resulting from Rheumatism that I contracted while In the Army my Experience would been a good one." "Matthews & Warren Stereotypers & Printers Buffalo N.Y." Inside front wrapper and both sides of back wrapper have advertisements for Steinway & Sons pianos and Carhart Needham & Co.'s organs. Pages 1 2 and 14-16 also contain Steinway & Sons advertisements; last page contains advertisement for the Florence reversible feed sewing machine. Contains the lyrics of the choruses and text of dialogues telling the story of the American Civil War. Written by Henry Morford 1823-1881 this dramatic depiction ends with the assasination of President Abraham Lincoln the ascension of Andrew Johnson to the presidency and a "Grand Tableau of Peace." A version of this first appeared in 1863 during the war. There are also several later expanded editions of this work. This is the first edition published after the conclusion of the war and the assassination of Lincoln. Very scarce. In Very Good Condition: corners of front wrapper and first leaf slightly creased; minor chipping at lower corner of front wrapper; front wrapper slightly soiled; otherwise clean and tight. J. M. 1923. A proxy boldly signed by John Pierpont Morgan Jr. as a shareholder and appointing five men as his proxies who were George F. Baker Walter B. James Edward S. Harkness Robert S. Brewster and R.T. Crane Jr. at the Annual Meeting of the Shareholders of Jekyl Island Club." Double matted and framed with a photograph of Morgan. The entire piece measures 13.25 inches by 17.25 inches. Rare and desirable. Created in 1885 the Jekyll Island Club limited to 100 individuals in order to maintain exclusivity counted among its members newspaper tycoon Joseph Pulitzer department store magnate Marshall Field railroad heir and philanthropist William K. Vanderbilt Equitable Life Insurance founder Henry Hyde and banker and financier J. Pierpont Morgan. Famously it was at the elite club in November 1910 that a committee of senators bankers and treasury officials secretly met to draft legislation to create the U.S. Federal Reserve. This Cleveland attorney and Republican politician became that city's city manager in 1930 effectively operating as Cleveland's 42nd mayor at a time when Cleveland operated briefly on the city manager plan; but with the Great Depression his reforms and hiring of African-Americans at City Hospital didn't sit well and that model was outvoted for the more traditional major/city council plan; he ran for mayor but was defeated by a Democrat and by 1931 was out of a job; in 1939 he became judge of the Ohio Court of Appeals. ANS 1p 8½" X 6" Cleveland OH 24 December 1934. Addressed to "Mr. Gates" Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar. Near fine. On his imprinted "Law Office of Daniel E. Morgan" letterhead the de facto former mayor notes simply in his huge bold hand: "Am pleased to send you my autograph." and signs boldly in full below. An attractive example from the period between his mayorship and his judgeship. Unusual item for the Cleveland completist. unknown

Rare autograph signature from American financier and banker John Pierpont Morgan. Boldly signed in ink on an off-white slip clipped from a document "J. Pierpont Morgan." In fine condition. Matted and framed with a large portrait of Morgan and a biographical placard. The entire piece measures 14.75 inches by 25 inches. As a staple figure in corporate financial history John Pierpont Morgan is known far and wide as America's "greatest banker" Adrian Wooldridge. Morgan began his career in 1837 by joining the family bank "House of Morgan" which grew large enough to save the federal reserve during the depression of 1890 by backing it with $62 million in gold bullion a situation Morgan would become familiar with in his own leadership on Wall Street. Having formed several multinational corporations such as U. S. Steel through the merging of interests Morgan held a colossal amount of power over capital markets in the United States and was able to save the American monetary system from collapse in the financial crisis of 1907. unknown

<p>Paris: Baudry's European Library 1837. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Octavo. 350 pages. Hardcover quarter bound in green leather with green marbled boards. The binding is rubbed but sound. There is some splitting to the rear hinge near the foot of the spine. Nice gilt designs on the spine. Endpapers are marbled. Early owner's book plates on the front pastedown. One is of "H. L. Barton" and has a shield with three dragons' heads on within the shield and another above it. The motto on the banner reads "Fide et Fortitu Dine." A smaller label above it offers the location of this book in the owner's library as being Case A Shelf 4. A piece of later marbled paper has been affixed to the front flyleaf perhaps over another bookplate. The half title notes "Collection of Ancient and Modern British Authors. / Vol. CLXXI. / Abel Allnutt." The rear pastedown has the remains of what appears to have been a date due receipt. Illustrated with color plates and maps by Cyrus LeRoy Baldridge. The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan was first published in 1824. It is said to be based on the life of Abolhasan Khan Ilchi who served as the Iranian Ambassador to England from about 1810 to 1813 and wrote Heyratnameh The Book of Wonders the account of his travels to England. James Morier 1782-1849 traveled with Ilchi to England and then accompanied him back to Iran. With his knowledge of Eastern life and manners he wrote several entertaining novels. The most popular of these was "The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan" 1824 and its sequel "The Adventures of Hajji Baba of Ispahan in England" 1828. These were followed by "Zohrab the Hostage" 1832 ; "Ayesha the Maid of Kars" 1834 ; and "The Mirza" 1841 all full of brilliant description character-painting and delicate satire. . The volume is in virtually perfect condition unmarked tight square and clean. The unclipped dust jacket now in Mylar is significantly chipped and torn with loss. NEAR FINE/POOR. .
