‎1916 - 1924 SUPER ORIGINAL ARCHIVE OF GERMAN AND ENGLISH LETTERS BETWEEN BERLIN AND NEW YORK RELATIVES AND FRIENDS OF ALBERT EINSTEIN‎

‎BERLIN GERMANY BROOKLYN NEW YORK. Good. 1916. On offer is a simply fascinating archive of 1916 -1924 manuscript letters journals and related ephemera of a German-Jewish family with extended family in America. The family included Herman Muller the father Mabel the mother and their son Norman plus others that are mentioned include are Uncle Sammy and Grossmama. The family was split between Berlin Germany and Brooklyn New York and Switzerland laater. The group has approximately 90 separate letters equally divided between English and German. There are also letters from a Julius Nickelsburg a family friend. There are another largish group of separate items from school journals to identity papers from Germany included. With the backdrop of World War I and the inherent knowledge of current day readers that World War II is over a not too distant horizon makes for some gripping reading. Add to this that the family is connected to Professor Albert Einstein anecdotally we have learned that Mabel Muller was an administrative assistant to Einstein but we cannot confirm this and he is mentioned at least 3 times that a casual read has noted. The references also seem quite intimate Einstein sent them a letter of condolence regarding the death of Herman we believe in 1927 is mentioned in a letter leading credence to the aforementioned association. We suspect that the German side of the correspondence may hold some more Einstein mentions. Here are some snippets from the three letters mentioning Einstein: Feb .17th 1927; From Mabel Muller on the death of her husband Herman she mentions going to Temple and receiving 150 letters of condolence many from Doctors in Germany in this 3 page letter there is an entry on the second page "Prof. Einstein Letter". For Einstein to have sent a letter of condolence he must have known the family. Yet another letter from Norman's Grandmother mentions Einstein's visit to New York. Writing to Norman Muller in Germany; April 8th 1921 'We are surprised it will take so long for your examination we were in hopes that it would be sooner Prof Einstein and wife are here now I cannot explain to you what a big fuss and lots of attentions the Americans are giving him big big honors big receptions by the city and big dinners by the rich people over here. Many times Sammy and Alice are invited also and he does look so peculiar but the people do not care for that because he is so highly educated. We are in hopes now soon to have peace with Germany which I think will be soon.' Then: Berlin Wed Sept 27th 1922 'It is very nice of Mrs. Wallach to send those papers some time you must write a letter of thanks also should note yesterday I met Prof Einstein he was glad to see me I was wishing you were here.' There are seven journals from a University or college in Germany one titled Physik another titled "No Stem- Mu" in differential calculus; others journals are from a French course and yet others have more advanced calculus and Math problems one has the name of Norman Stienhardt Muller on the front the cover. Also Included are many intriguing calling cards written in German They belonged to different German Doctors for example: Dr. Paul Herzberg Dr Otto Ollendorff Dr Oscar Salomom Dr Leimforfer. Interestingly one of the calling cards mentions in pencil that the individuals were murdered in Auschwitz during the holocaust Herr und Frau Alexander Contizer. Woodcut printer's mark on the title it depicts a woman leaning on a staff and holding in her right hand a burning oil lamp. The meaning of this scene is explained on another version of Perna's printer's mark which bears the motto: 'Lucerna pedibus meis verbum tuum' which refers to Psalm 119 verse 105: 'Lucerna pedibus meis verbum tuum et lumen semitis meis'. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my paths These verses were later put to music by Henry Purcel in 'Thy Word is a lantern unto my feet' Z61 5 woodcut initials. Latin translation only Condition: Vellum slightly soiled. Endpapers renewed in the 19th century. 2 ownership entries on the title. Uppermargin of the first gatherings slightly waterstained. Last 24 leaves faintly waterstained. Paper yellowing Note: This collection of the works of the Greek rhetor Hermogenes of Tarsus 2nd cent. A.D. contains 3 works of which the 'De statibus' Peri stase�n and 'De formis orationis' Peri ide�n are certainly authentic. The third work 'De inventione' Peri heurese�s is considered to be of doubtful authenticity. They deal with exercises in rhetoric and different kinds of arguments to be used especially for the defence. Hermogenes' most important work 'De statibus' deals with 7 qualities of style 'all to be seen as ingredients in the perfection of Demosthenes: saph�neia megethos kallos gorgot�s �thos al�theia and deinot�s' OCD 2nd ed. p. 505 Added to the 3 works of Hermogenes are the 'Progymnasmata' of the Greek rhetor Aphtonius 4/5 cent. A.D. which is an introduction to rhetoric offering definitions of basic principles. Because the Progymnasmata were easier to read and understand than Hermogenes this slim but important manual remained basic for rhetoric education during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Hermogenes was translated into Latin by the Italian humanist poet and historian Natale Conti in Latin Natalis Comes or Natalis de Comitibus 1520-1582. He translated also into Latin the rhetorical treatises of Alexander Sophista 'De figuris sententiarum ac elocutionum' and of Demetrius Phalereus 'De oratione sive De modo dicendi' both published in Venice in 1557 and the 'Dipnosophistarum sive Coenae sapientium libri XV' of Athenaeus. He is however best known for his 'Mythologiae' first published in 1567 which became a standard source for classical mythology in later Renaissance Europe. See Wikipedia 'Natalis Comes' Provenance: Below the imprint an old ownership inscription of 'Leopoldi Andreae Guadagni JCt Flor.'. The Guadagni were a family of Florentine goldsmiths active in the 18th century. One of its members Leopoldo Andreas Guadagni 1705-1785 a jurist was professor of Roman law at the University of Pisa. He published several books on Roman law. Above the printer's mark the old ownership inscription of 'Petri Francisci Minotii Savinatis'. On the site of Flickr we found an inscription of one 'Pier Francesco Minozzi'. This is definitely the same hand. In 1670 Minozzi published 'L'Alleluia di Pindo per la clemenza risorta o regnante nel Vaticano'. On the title he is called 'Professor di Legge Monsavinese'. The 'patria' of Minozzi was of the community of Monte San Salvino in the province of Siena hence the addition 'Savinatis' in the inscription of his name. Minozzi is now forgotten but in his own age he was considered to be a great author and poet. He wrote prose and panegyric poetry in Latin and in Toscane and was professor of Law. His first collection of Latin epigrams was published in Siena in 1629 at the age of 18. He was a passionate representative of Italian 'asianism'. On the site 'cultura-barocca.com' a portrait of Minozzi and more data can befound. This book was once the property of two Italian Law professors. The binding of this book is important in the context of the cultural history of Lutheranism. The binding dates from the last 2 decades of the 16th century. The back has 4 raised bands. The boards are decorated with blind stamped triple fillet borders and a row consisting of floral motives and some tiny portraits. The central panel of the upper board shows a fine example of a well preserved portrait of Johann Friedrich I the Magnanimous der Grossm�thige Elector of Saxony Kurf�rst und Herzog von Sachsen 1503-1554 in full armour with 3 lines of text at the bottom: 'Victus eras acie fidei con / stantia tandem victorem / ante homines fecit et ante deum'; on the lower board the blindstamped impressive and also well preserved coat of arms of this Elector of Saxony who became after his death a kind of protestant Saint. He still is for the 3rd of March the day he died is still commemorated in the evangelical church of Germany. Because the portrait of this nobleman also figures on a book held in the Penn Libraries where it is described as 'Elector of Saxony possibly August I 1526-1586' Cicero Philosophical works 1565 copy in Rare Book & Manuscript Library Call no.: LatC C4855.10 1565 we will investigate this in some detail. Johann Friedrich I was an ardent follower of Martin Luther with whom he corresponded. He was a lifelong promotor of the reformatory movement and one of the movement's most important political leaders. Johann Friedrich was defeated and taken prisoner on the 24th of april 1547 by troops of the emperor Charles V in the neighbourhood of M�hlberg battle of M�hlberg 'mannhaft fechtend am Backen verwundet'. On this wound on the cheek and the resulting scar see below On the 10th of May he was sentenced to death. 'Eben mit seinem Schicksalgef�hrten Herzog Ernst von Grubenhagen beim Schachspiel sitzend h�rte J.Fr. wie erz�hlt wird . das Urtheil mit grossem Gleichmuth an; 'Pergamus' wandte er sich zu seinem erschrockenen Mitspieler'. This sentence was not carried out. Johann Friedrich had however to abdicate but he refused to be converted to Catholicism. In captivity his political role came to an end but in prison he became a protestant Saint. 'Mit diesem j�hen Sturzen war Johann Friedrichs politische Rolle zu Ende. Nicht aber seine politische Bedeutung f�r das evangelische Deutschland. The duke was released in 1552 and his way home was a real triumph. Melanchthon wrote after his death: 'Die Bekenntniss und Best�ndigkeit Herzog Johann Friedrichs hat unsere Kirche mehr gefrommt als vielleicht die Victoria hat dienen m�gen'. German quotations: ADB 14 p.326/330 In 1551 Matthes Gebel made a medal with the portrait of a bearded duke with a clearly visible scar on his left cheek. There is also an engraved portrait with a scar made in 1547 the year of the battle of M�hlberg. This scar on the left cheek which is apparantly part of the iconography of the Duke is also clearly visible on the blindstamped portrait on the front of this book. So our conclusion must be that this portrait belongs to Johann Friedrich I. The coat of arms on the backcover was made after an engraving of Lucas Cranach a friend of Johann Friedrich. In Jena there is a statue of Johann Friedrich the socalled 'Hanfried-Denkmal' to commemorate the founding of the University in 1558 of which Johann Friedrich had been the driving force. The 'Deutsches Historisches Museum' holds a number of paintings 1630 which depict the life of this protestant Saint in 28 scenes. � Wechel's woodcut printer's mark on the title depicting the winged horse Pegasus gracefully arched over a caduceus and 2 intertwined cornucopiae Condition: Cover soiled and worn at the extremities. Occasional marginalia in the Apologia probably made by Christoph Richter see below Note: This book is a reissue of a revised Latin translation of Herodotus' 'Historiae' made by Lorenzo Valla and published by the French humanist/scholar Henri Estienne or in Latin Henricus Stephanus in Geneva in 1566. Stephanus plays an important role in the history of the reception of Herodotus. In 1474 the Latin translation of Valla was first published. 1502 saw the 'editio princeps' of the Greek text. When Henri Estienne was planning to publish a new revised Latin translation of Herodotus he decided to try his talents as a critic on Herodotus and wrote in his defence his 'Apologia pro Herodoto' to accompany this revised translation which was published by him in Geneva in 1566.
