In 1865 American composer and songwriter Henry Clay Work wrote his greatest hit "Marching Through Georgia" inspired by Sherman's march to the sea at the end of the previous year. Thanks to its lively melody the song was immensely popular its million sheet-music sales being unprecedented. It is a cheerful marching song and has since been pressed into service many times including by Princeton University as a football fight song. Timothy Shay Arthur's play Ten Nights in a Barroom had Work's 1864 "Come Home Father" a dirgesome song bemoaning the demon drink: too mawkish for modern tastes but always sung at Temperance Meetings. Second edition quarto with the printed title extra engraved frontispiece the explanation of the frontispiece pp 26 307 i; title page to Dictionarium Rusticum pagination continues to 324 index 4 pages some age-toning and marking throughout but still a very good sound copy; the Explanation of the frontispiece is a little trimmed at the base but no loss of the print the engraved frontispiece has been very carefully restored along its margins the printed title and the index leaves are a little frayed at the margins; the verso of the title to Dictionarium has the contemporary inscription " Wm Chambers His Book bought it of Jonas Broughton of Wellingborough"; in an excellent twentieth century binding of full calf blind stamoed and lined raised bands and a red morocco label on the spine. The binding and paper restoration are by John Smart of Chippenham. Worlidge 1640-1700 was a noted English agriculturalist who lived in Petersfield Hampshire England. He was considered a great expert on rural affairs and one of the first British agriculturalists to discuss the importance of farming as an industry. The book treats of improvements in general of enclosing meadows and pastures and of watering and draining them of clovers vetches spurry Wiltshire long-grass probably that of the meadows of Salisbury hemp flax rape turnips etc. A Persian wheel was made by his direction in Wiltshire in 1665 that carried water in good quantity above twenty feet high for watering meadows and another near Godalming in Surrey. Sowing clover and other seeds preserved the cattle in the fatal winter of 1673 in the southern parts of England; whereas in the western and northern through defect of hay and pasture the greater part of their cattle perished. Hops enough were not planted but we imported them from the Netherlands of a quality not so good as our own. The authors he chiefly quotes are Weston Hartlib and Blith. Worlidge's system of husbandry collected information published during the period of the Commonwealth. The work went through a number of editions and was important for many years. . Second edition. Thomas Worthington commissions Robert Orr as a justice of the peace of Green Township Harrison County Ohio for three years on March 8 1815. Signed on the front by Thomas Worthington 1773-1827 and the secretary of state Jeremiah McLene 1767-1837 and on the back by Justice of the Peace Daniel Welch. Jeremiah McLene 1767-1837 served as Ohio Secretary of State from 1808 to 1831 and represented Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1833 to 1837. He was born in Pennsylvania and is credited with having risen to the rank of major general of militia during the American Revolution. Henry Rossiter Worthington 1817-1880 was an American mechanical engineer who patented the duplex steam pump in 1859 and was a founder of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1880. He established the Henry R. Worthington Pump Works in 1845 in Brooklyn. The Henry R. Worthington Co. was established in 1893 in New Jersey to continue the manufacturing of steam pumps and pump engines. This propoal submitted to the city of Chicago includes drawings of the Worthington vertical triple expansion high duty pumping engine as well as of Worthington pumps made for the water works in Providence St. Louis Brooklyn Nashville Memphis and Peoria. Boards with blind double fillet borders Condition: Small pencil note on the front pastedown and the title Note: The German scholar Johann von Wowern or Wower or Wouwer 1574/75-1612 son of a Dutch religious refugee studied law at the university of Marburg and went in 1593 to Leiden to continue his studies especially classics at the newly established university. There he stayed for five years and established relations with the Dutch scholars Meursius Scriverius Heinsius and Baudius and also with Scaliger. The arch-enemy of Scaliger Caspar Scioppius suggested maliciously that Scaliger had entertained illicit sexual relations with Wower. Wower published an edition of Petronius' 'Satyricon' Lugd. Bat. 1596 the recension of which 'contains enough felicitous emendations to earn him the kind of immortality reserved to the chosen few: a place in the apparatus of modern critical editions'. L. Deitz 'Ioannes Wower of Hamburg Philologist and Polymath. A Preliminary Sketch of His Life and Works' Journal of the Warburg and Courtauld Institutes Vol. 58 1995 p. 138 Wower furthermore published Apollinarius Sidonius' Opera Lyon 1598 reissued 1617 a rather worthless and partly plagiarized edition; Firmius Maternus' 'De errore profanarum religionum' Hamb. 1603 reissued 1645 which was to remain the standard text for more than two centuries; 'Octavius' of Minucius Felix Hamburg 1603; 'Ad Q. Septimii Florentis Tertulliani opera emendationes epidicticae' Francof. 1603 & 1612; Apuleius' 'Opera' Hamb. 1606. His 'Syntagma de graeca et latina Bibliorum interpretatione' and 'Epistolarum centuriae duae' were published posthumously Hamb. 1618. In 1610 Wower published in Hamburg his 'Dies aestiva sive de umbra paegnion' or 'A Summer's Day or: a playful Poem on Shade'. The 'Summer's Day' 'belongs to the genre of mock-serious encomia in which so many humanists excelled and of which Erasmus's 'Praise of Folly' is the best-known example. These learned disquisitions praising lice fever baldnes the bull of Phalaris or the 'ens rationis' indeed anything unhealthy ridiculous preposterous or unintelligible tend to be amusing only at surface level concealing as they do the bitter pill of the moralist. Wower's short praise of shade is no exception and his intricate definitions of shade in general and the species into which it divides are clearly surservient to another purpose albeit not a particularly original one: 'In this life we pursue less things themselves than their shadows and semblances. Therefore I fancied a sustained stroll and an incursion into the realm of Shade to give it my most heartfelt embrace. Indeed . everything that mortals pine for and strenuously seek is. changeable deceptive unstable and liable to vanish with the precipitate haste of a shadow; a wise man should not even wish for these things'. For what it is worth I would not hesitate to qualify the Paegnion as a little 'chef d'oeuvre' of its kind'. Soft cover. Very Good. eight volumes various sizes approximately 980 pages bound in limp-leather wallet style bindings minor wear to bindings else very good. Manuscript diaries of John R. Wright circa 1830-1880 a farmer and laborer in Westfield Chatauqua County New York. Westfield is in the section of western New York State popularly known as the "Burnt Over District" it is also a dozen miles from Lily Dale the birthplace of the modern Spiritualist movement. The Wright's were presumably one of the many families caught up in the religious fervor sweeping the area. The diary notes attendance on several occasions at Spiritualist meetings. Our diarist John R. Wright and his father James were two of about twenty-five people from Westfield that signed a petition in 1854 for the Spiritualist Newspaper asking Congress to appoint a "Scientific Commission to investigate certain physical and mental phenomena of questionable origin and mysterious import that have of late occurred in this country and in Europe." Per Wikipedia Marie Robinson Wright Née Robinson; May 4 1853 - February 1 1914 Was An American Travel Writer Of The Long Nineteenth Century. She Was Elected Member Of Learned Societies In Various Parts Of The World; And Served As A Special Delegate Or Representative To International Expositions. It Was However As An Observer And Especially As A Writer That Wright Gained Her Fame. Her Books Were Written About Brazil Bolivia Chile Peru And Mexico. These Volumes Were Generous Octavos Well Illustrated And Filled With Facts Gathered Chiefly From Authoritative Sources Or Confirmed By Her Own Observations. In 1895 With Her Daughter Ida Dent Wright For Her Sole Companion She Went To Mexico. Secretary Of Foreign Affairs Ignacio Mariscal And President Porfirio Díaz Were Already Her Warm Admirers And It Was To Them She Went With Her Plans. Both These Executives Furnished Her With Letters To Every Governor In Mexico And The President Ordered Not Only A Military Escort Wherever Needed But That Special Trains And Steamboat Facilities Should Be Given Her Throughout The Country. Rare vintage matte-finish portrait photograph of Orville Wright. Inscribed by Wright at the lower left corner in fountain pen "To Wm. P. MacCracken from his friend Orville Wright." The recipient William P. MacCracken Jr. 1888–1969 was an American lawyer aviator and public official who played a pivotal role in shaping early U.S. aviation policy. As the first Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Aeronautics 1926–1929 he helped implement the Air Commerce Act of 1926 establishing federal standards for pilot licensing air traffic regulation and aviation safety. In near fine condition with fading to the inscription. Portrait by Underwood & Underwood of Washington. The piece measures 8 inches by 10 inches. The Wright brothers Orville and Wilbur were two American brothers inventors and aviation pioneers who are generally credited with inventing building and flying the world's first successful airplane. They made the first controlled sustained flight of a powered heavier-than-air aircraft on December 17 1903 four miles south of Kitty Hawk North Carolina. In 1904-1905 the brothers developed their flying machine into the first practical fixed-wing aircraft. unknown
