All his photographs are in the same square format simple and confined with no retouching or alteration of the framing and seem less to show off a subject famous or unknown in or out of power dead or alive than to seek out a presence. Thirty-five years of photographic practice obsessions this is maybe what remains; a singular recording mode of light burning from one picture to the other in a series of proposals looking alike though each one as singular as the fraction of time it refers to Marc Trivier. Marc Trivier takes facial photographs of figures from the eighties. The subject looks right into the lens. These are not portrait star photographs but they are the result of a will of desacralisation: Instead of being a writer's or artists' portraitist among many others he marginalises himself with his device: under the pretext of settings he keeps his models waiting he makes them pose several minutes which gives them a worn look. Maybe he expects a more natural attitude. Here is Francis Bacon in a delicate balance Samuel Beckett Jean Dubuffet or even Michel Foucault more or less sagged back in their chairs. Intimate pictures. Picture of tiredness at Marc Trivier's S. Rousselle-Tellier in Marges 2004. Most of the time photographed in their personal space the subjects loosen up no longer mastering their image. The resulting unbalance reveals these figures' frailties and allows Trivier to render the unity of the intimate body and the public artworks. I was reading Genet; to me Genet was letters in a book. And then one day I saw his portrait and there was like a rupture. How could it be possible that these signs were also somebody Making a portrait is reuniting the name and the face Marc Trivier. Many items seem to oppose Warhol and Trivier. Andy Warhol is the artist of the multiple. His art was born from the metamorphosis of the consumerist artificial and mocks the proliferation of the identical. Marc Trivier is an adept of rarity and each one of his photographs comes down to some rare prints all differing in time and the artist's prints. Andy Warhol knows the importance of image which even ends up replacing the individual. He knows people play roles and this is the image he captures. His various series on Elvis Presley Marilyn Monroe or Mao show the transition to the icon status which makes these human beings immortal and destroys their humanity to change them into pieces of art. On the other hand Trivier's photographs strengthen the presence of an unwieldy body the artist cannot get rid of an obstacle to sacralisation. Warhol's known photographic clichés faithful to his spirit represent him either as a rock star proudly wearing his perfecto and sunglasses as his protégé Lou Reed or as an eccentric artist with his tousled hair or simulating a boxing match against Basquiat. Each one of his photographs is a clever exposure of his character pushed to excess image of his own image which the modern icon master fully controls. Warhol's photography made by Marc Trivier shows a complete different person. Unbalanced by a slight low-angle view projected on a black canvas behind him cutting out the scene in a triptych Andy Warhol's body seems to emerge from this dark background whereas his legs and heavy boots slightly oversized by the shooting take pride of place in the foreground. An engraving from the Description de l'Egypte one of the masterpieces of French printing and the birth of a new field: Egyptology. A gigantic survey of Egypt at the time of Bonaparte's conquests in 1798 and 1799 the work is divided into 13 volumes of engravings making up 892 plates of which 72 colored as well as presenting the splendors of the Egypt of the Pharaohs in 9 volumes. The other volumes discuss natural history and present a fascinating portrait of Coptic and Islamic Egypt as it was seen by Bonaparte's Eastern Armies. The Egyptian campaign' militarily a disaster demonstrates through the engravings of the Description d'Egypte the scientific success it nonetheless became thanks to the 167 expert members of the Commission of the Sciences and Arts of the Institut d'Egypte Egyptian Institute who followed Napoleon's army. The Institut gathered together in Egypt the mathematician Monge the chemist Berthollet the naturalist Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire as well as numerous artists engineers architects and doctors. They were tasked with re-discovering modern and ancient Egypt and displaying its natural treasures as well as the know-how of its inhabitants.This edition the so-called Imperial edition of the plates for the Description de l'Egypte was printed in four large formats two of which were specially created for it and christened Moyen-Egypte and Grand-Egypte. A special press was built to print it the process extending over 20 years from 1809 to 1829. The Imperial edition proved so popular that a second edition this time in black and white and without the Egypte ancienne et moderne watermark known as the Royal Edition was published during the Restoration by the printing house of C.-L.-F. Panckoucke Paris.The engravings of the Description d'Egypte owe a great deal to Baron Dominique-Vivant Denon illustrator diplomat collector and later Director of the Musée Napoléon the Louvre. His exploration of the South of Egypt gave Bonaparte the idea of sending the experts of the Institut there thus creating a faithful and complete portrait of the area. This was the research gathered together from 1802 in the mammoth Description de L'Egypte.Denon embarked on this story of archeological exploration at the age of 51 reaching first Alexandria and then Cairo before exploring Upper Egypt. Along with the members of the Institut d'Egypte the Natural History Museum's painter H.J. Redouté brother of Pierre-Joseph Redouté author of Roses the mineralogist Dolomiue and the draughtsman Joly Denon then explored the Nile Delta and Lower Egypt. When however he joined the 21st Light Infantry Regiment as it marched across Upper Egypt in pursuit of the retreating Mameluks in November 1798 he found himself the only civilian. In the very midst of the battle itself he reeled off sketches of the works of art that peppered his path right up to the threshold of the Sudan. It was especially in May that the struggle against the pro-Versailles press gained vigor: thus between May 5 and 18 21 newspapers were suppressed. Illustrated with a title-frontispiece by Delin engraved by Laan a title vignette a frontispiece and 5 folding plates unsigned. Full flexible vellum binding. Smooth spine with title in black ink. Endpapers detached. Title-frontispiece trimmed short with a slight lack to the right edge. Similarly the title page shows a slight lack to the right margin as does the frontispiece. Plate 5 has been partially backed with old paper. Leaf 201 restored in margin and some leaves frayed in right margin over 1 cm. The first Dutch pastoral novel L'arcadie hollandaise enjoyed great success in its country. The edition was accomplished by a famous professor from Amsterdam Caspar Barleus at the author's request who accompanied the text with numerous commentaries and notes on Holland. Very fine condition colors very well preserved. These sheets are constructions or cardboard models on which a pattern was printed. This pattern must be cut out and then assembled to construct various objects or life scenes. The Épinal imagery published several series of cut-out models including the ""Grandes Constructions"" in 39 x 49 cm format the ""Moyennes Constructions"" and the ""Petites Constructions"". From 1880 to 1908 constructions were published featuring architecture costumes boats and various vehicles. During this same period paper theaters or ""théâtre chez soi"" also enjoyed great success. This toy model developed and lasted until the Second World War. Once sold by peddlers Épinal prints owe their name to Jean-Charles Pellerin who was the first printer to publish this type of image in series and who lived in the town of Épinal Vosges. The subjects are very varied but generally revolve around religion history French Revolution battles military uniforms or drawn from successful novels. Épinal imagery has its origins in popular art imagery born in the 15th century mainly intended for the illiterate rural public. Originally the image is engraved on a wooden plate and printing is done using a hand press. It is then colored using stencils. In the 19th century lead castings were made from the engraved wood blocks: stereotypes which allowed production to be increased. In 1820 lithography was adopted which induced a radical change in style with finer drawings. In 1900 coloring was still done with stencils thanks to a machine that could color 300 images per hour the Aquatype. Pellerin & Cie unknown

Chez M. l'abbé de la Chaud M. l'Abbé Le Blond à Paris 1780 - 1784 20.50 x 34 cm 2 volumes reliés First edition magnificently illustrated with a frontispiece by Cochin engraved by Saint-Aubin a title vignette by the same 59 large tailpieces and headpieces designed and engraved by Saint-Aubin explained and deciphered at the beginning of the work and 179 figures hors-texte each presenting an engraved stone engraved by Saint-Aubin. Fine printing on deluxe Holland paper. Full black morocco-grained shagreen binding ca 1850. Smooth spine with flat raised bands decorated with fillets and roulettes on the bands. Triple-ruled frames on boards with corner fleurons. Marbled edges. Light rubbing to headcaps corners. Paper lacking to margin of one leaf in volume I. Some leaves browned. Pale angular dampstain on 3 leaves of volume I. Handsome copy with wide margins. The Duke of Orléans Louis-Philippe D'Orléans was a great collector both of books antiquities and engraved stones; the latter provide useful information to archaeology and are even decisive for studies on Antiquity. Gathering engraved stones required long and patient research and much money and there were scarcely any but sovereigns who could assemble such a collection. That of the Duke of Orléans was in this respect remarkable. At the end of the work a letter from Daubenton on the accuracy of the representation of hippopotamuses.
