Hermann Boerhaave is one of the great figures of modern medicine founder of clinical medicine who published in 1709 his most famous book which contributed to his fame throughout Europe: the Aphorisms a sort of fundamental manual in the knowledge of diseases and their treatments. Van Swieten was one of Boerhaave's pupils and disciples whose lectures attracted audiences from all over Europe. Volumes 11 and 12 comprise the author's posthumous works and bear volume numbers 1 and 2 on the title page. A third volume of these posthumous works would appear in 1800. Contemporary full speckled calf. Smooth spine decorated with urn tools and stars; roulettes. Framing frieze on boards. Morocco title and volume labels in black. Headcaps of volumes 1 4 5 8 11 and 12 worn or partially worn. Foot caps of volumes 1 2 4 6 likewise. Title and volume labels of volume 4 largely missing. Half of the title label of volume 7 is also absent. Headcap of volume 11 partially torn. The Count of Tressan did much through his adaptations for the rehabilitation of the Middle Ages and Renaissance literature that inherited from the 15th century. It is clear that at the end of the 18th century these works would have been unreadable to the public. This interest in the Middle Ages would fully emerge with Romanticism the Empire having brought antiquity back into fashion. The second volume extremely rare and almost never found together with the first volume of the memoirs appeared in 1665. Volume I bears no volume indication on the title page volume II does; the publisher indeed deemed it appropriate after the fact to provide a sequel to the Memoirs by gathering various pieces. Contemporary full brown sheep bindings. Spine with raised bands decorated in the 19th century pastiche in shagreen. The Count of Montresor Claude Bourdeille was a seasoned conspirator and we see him conspiring in all periods against Richelieu against Gaston D'Orléans during the Fronde. He interested himself in all sorts of secrets and his memoirs as well as the pieces contained therein are rich testimony to this from 1632 to the early years of the Fronde. Two tiny tears to half a centimeter of the upper margin otherwise very well preserved. Provenance : the personal collection of Philippe Laignel-Lavastine a close friend of Max Jacob. unknown
