Contemporary full calf binding decorated spine with raised bands. 'It was only at the age of forty-three that Lafosse brought to the stage POLIXENE his first tragedy. This work had great success during seventeen performances. The Dauphin attending the second was so pleased with the actors' performance that he had them given a hundred louis. Two years after Polixène appeared MANLIUS CAPITOLINUS performed for the first time on January 18 1698. This tragedy then had great success and still today holds one of the first places in the repertoire of French theatre after the masterpieces of the great masters. THESEE tragedy despite the criticisms to which it gave rise remained long in the theatre first performed on January 5 1700 it had twenty-three performances. The sixth scene of the fifth act produced a great effect. CORESUS ET CALIRRHOE fourth and last tragedy by Lafosse had much less success than the others. Performed for the first time on December 9 1703 it obtained only a small number of performances and has not been revived. Jansen the work was indeed first published in Italian by Bodoni. Near-contemporary full sheep bindings with smooth spines bronze title and volume labels. Handsome copy. The work begins with memoirs on the life and works of Mengs 1728-1779 by Chevalier d'Azara and a notice on Mengs's paintings followed by the painter's treatises on painting covering beauty taste technical aspects of painting as well as various celebrated painters Raphael Correggio Titian. The preface contains a paragraph by Klopstock the German editor and Fuessli. Court painter to the King of Poland he joined the Spanish court at the behest of Charles III King of Spain; his paintings quite early in the neoclassical taste see his Cleopatra secured him fame and wealth and the writings he left on painting and the arts are marked by research and subtlety.
