Mendel Sachs 1927 -2012 Was An American Theoretical Physicist. His Scientific Work Includes The Proposal Of A Unified Field Theory That Brings Together The Weak Force Strong Force Electromagnetism And Gravity. Sachs Earned His Bachelors At The University Of California Los Angeles He Then Moved To Columbia University New York For Postgraduate Study. While At Columbia Sachs Was Taught By Willis Lamb And Hideki Yukawa.5 Yukawa Had Agreed To Be Sach's Thesis Advisor But Sachs Decided To Complete His Doctorate Back At Ucla. Following The Award Of His Phd In 1954 Sachs First Post-Doctoral Position Was At The New University Of California Radiation Laboratory At Both Berkeley And Livermore Which Was Run By Edward Teller And Ernest Lawrence And Was Also Home To Bryce Dewitt Who Sachs Would Later Co-Author Articles With In Physics Today. In 1956 Sachs Became A Senior Scientist At Lockheed Missiles And Space Laboratory While At Lockheed Sachs Began Developing With Solomon Schwebel A Field Theory Of Quantum Electrodynamics That Included Broken Symmetries That Did Not Require Recourse To Renormalization Or Perturbation Techniques - The "Schwebel-Sachs" Model. In 1961 He Became A Research Professor At Mcgill University; This Was Followed By A Post As Associate Professor Of Physics At Boston University 1962-1966. In 1964 While At Boston University Sachs Received An Invitation From Paul Dirac To Visit Cambridge University. Sachs Stayed In England For Three Months Where His Wife Yetty Had Family. Sachs Worked With Paul Dirac At The Department Of Applied Mathematics And Theoretical Physics Cambridge University. While Working With Dirac Sachs Also Had The Opportunity To Discuss Ideas With John G. Taylor John Polkinghorne And Graduate Students At Damtp. In 1965 Sachs Had Had A Breakthrough While At The Aspen Physics Institute Colorado. Sachs Was Able To Derive A Result For A Unified Field Theory If Quantum Mechanics Was Considered To Be A Linear Approximation For A Field Theory Of Inertia Expressed In General Relativity. Sachs Argued That The Work Of Albert Einstein And Erwin Schrödinger In General Relativity Did Not Yet Take Account Of The Inertia Of Matter Which Required Consideration Of The Mach Principle. In The Summer Of 1966 Abdus Salam Invited Sachs To Spend A Few Months At The International Centre For Theoretical Physics In Trieste Italy. During This Time Sachs Published The Details Of His Formal Structure Of Quantum Mechanics From A Generally Covariant Field Theory Of Inertia In The Italian Journal Il Nuovo Cimento. Oval engravings of head and shoulder many with a smaller rectangle shaped print at the foot of the portrait. MOST CRISP AND CLEAN BUT SOME FOXED OR STAINED. Included is the very rare portraint of 'Tchien- Lung Emperor of China who gave Audience to the British Embassey in 1793' with a small rectanle scene of the meeting in a large domed tent. John Chapman was one of the most gifted engravers of the late eighteenth century with exaMples of his work in major national collections including the National Portrrait Gallery. After Graduating From The University Of Michigan He Moved To Chicago Illinois To Attend Rush Medical College. There He Became An Understudy Of William B. Herrick And Joined His Medical Practice. Receiving A Doctor Of Medicine In 1852 Johnson Was Named Lecturer On Physiology At Rush Eventually Chairing A Department There. In 1859 He Co-Founded The Chicago Medical College At Lind University Which Later Became The Feinberg School Of Medicine Of Northwestern University. During The Civil War Johnson Was The Top Medical Aide In The State Presiding Over The Board Of Medical Examiners For The State Of Illinois. Hosmer Johnson Was Initiated Into The Masonic Order In 1853 And Rose To Become Grand Orator Of The Grand Lodge Of Illinois. He Organized A Knights Templar Chapter For Illinois And Was First Officer Of That Branch For Two Terms. He Became A Member Of The Supreme Council Of The Scottish Rite Northern Jurisdiction In 1861 Later Becoming And Officer. He Could Speak Seven Foreign Languages Fluently And Also Had A Strong Knowledge Of The Ojibwe Language. ‎1802 Printed Almanack with Manuscript Margin Notes and Post-Revolutionary Diary Entries by a Columbia County New York Citizen Including Local and Historical References and Curious Coded Language‎

‎Claverack New York. Good with no dust jacket. 1802. Softcover. On offer is a printed almanac from 1802 titled Stoddard's Diary: OR THE COLUMBIA ALMANACK For the Year of our LORD 1802 by Andrew Beers. The Almanack contains 38 printed pages and 20 handwritten pages which constitute a short diary or journal kept by a man from Claverack Columbia County New York. The published content combined with the manuscript additions offer an outstanding glimpse into what people considered important information at the turn of the 19th century. The Almanack which is about the ". Usual and necessary in Compositions of this Nature many Things new useful and entertaining" contains printed sections with notes on human anatomy interest tables lunar almanac for each month of the year a list of officers of the Government of the United States and the State of New York and several essays. The published essays include Respect and Deference Due to the Aged The Fortunate Hindoo The Sham Ghost and What Industry Will Accomplish. Also included are advertisement for the Almanack author's new Land Office and Surveying business. The owner of the Almanack would have authored the 20 handwritten pages though their identity is unknown. The pages contain journal entries which are brief and to the point and place them somewhere in Columbia County NY. Some excerpts: "Died Arron Coffin" Feb 13 1802. "Thomas Fotheringham Nephew to Thomas Fotheringham Esq died after a long tedious and most Painful illness" Feb 25 1802. "Derek Ten Brock son of Jeremiah Ten Brock in a fit of Insanity struck a Negro Boy about 6 years of age and hit him outright and dangerously wounded" Mr. Ten Brock his father" Mar 12 1802. The diarist also notes a general election for Congress in April 1802. Excerpts of some historically relevant entries: "Died Mrs. Martha Washington widow of the late Gen'l George Washington" May 22 1802. "Gen'l Robt V Rensselaer was interred at Claverak with Military Honors" Sep 13 1802. Historical Note: Robert Van Rensselaer was a Colonel and later General in the Albion County Militia and fought on the American side in the American Revolution. He later served in the New York state assembly. A curious addition is the inclusion of what appears to be a code: "the C483stz66its48 Frg3qitz 82362dfg47th 2d261 wigz" Feb 14th 1802. A similar coded notation appears for the entry of Oct 17th. This 1802 Almanack turned journal was kept at a time when many of the chief actors of the American Revolution were still alive and the Republic was still quite young. It would be an excellent resource for a historian especially on studying America at the turn of the 19th century. Condition: Paper bound it measures 6 1/2 inches by 4 inches. The paper is in very good condition. There is a small burn scar on the leading edge of the pages but it is limited to the blank margin area.
