London: Thomas Harper 1633. Thick square octavo pp 6 702 66 printed in black letter. The title page is mounted and heavily restored from a much earlier time; it is age-toned and there is much staining of the surface possibly from the glue used to repair The first few pages are fragile at the leading edge and lacking a few small pieces; the remaining pages are age-toned and occasionally slightly marked or stained certainly used but overall quite sound with no tears or loss. Later calf with simple gilt decorated line with some cracking and wear fairly recently re-backed with a new calf spine blind-stamped. Front and rear hinges cracked but no weakness. The front endpaper has a tiny neat inscription dated 1917 and also the heraldic bookplate of Lady Violet Beaumont. Second edition of this charming guide to herbal remedies with the plants "set down in order of the Alphabet so that thou mayest without any difficulties finde them by the titles of the pages" "To the Reader". A description of each plant's curative properties and methods of use is given. For instance a parsnip "hang'd about the necke helpeth the swelling of the throte and no venemous thing shall hurt him that carrieth about him" p.464 the juice of the beet "put into the nose cleanseth the head" p. 66 and cinnamon "comforteth the stomacke and principall partes of the body" p.141. The Kings-head in the Old Bayley: John Wright 1653. Third edition small square octavo pp 18 274 12 lacking the engraved frontispiece and with only one of two engraved folding plates two full page woodcut illustrations and a small woodcut within the text the remaining title page a little stained the hinge at the title page cracked and open but still very sound the hinge at the rear similar but weaker the free endpaper ar the rear loose and frayed a little age-toning throughout but otherwise quite clean and sound old half calf and boards rubbed and worn the joints beginning to split. The title page runs over two pages - the first part pictorial and engraved the second part letterpress; it is the engraved part which is missing in this copy. With the armorial bookplate of John Norcliffe Preston. Blith's books on husbandry show notable good sense based on the author's and others' farming experience. He presents his judgements and opinions carefully and made textual changes in subsequent editions to describe new farming practices. His "The English Improver or A New Survey of Husbandry" was dedicated to both houses of Parliament and to the "ingenuous reader". A second edition appeared in the same year and third "much augmented" in 1652 with a second part containing "Six Newer Pieces of Improvement". This was dedicated to Cromwell the council of state nobility gentry soldiers husbandmen cottagers labourers and the meanest commoner. The new information concerned new crops such as woad clover sainfoin lucerne etc. This copy offered is yet another edition of 1653. Blith intended to write a further book on animal husbandry but apparently did not complete it. His Parliamentarian sympathies prevented any of his work reappearing after the Restoration of 1660. The books were written "in our own natural country language and in our ordinary and usual home-spun terms". He urged agricultural improvement but showed less enthusiasm for enclosure through his concern for the poor: enclosure should not be allowed to cause depopulation. Enclosure had in fact caused turmoil in his village of Cotesbach in 1603 and made it a centre of the Midland revolt of 1607. Though Blith showed sympathy for the common man and understood the aspirations of the Diggers he did not think the latter were realistic. Blith's ideas brought some improvement in techniques but the period of peace under the Commonwealth was short-lived and in general substantial improvement had to wait for the Agricultural Revolution of the next century. Blanche Henrey 1000. RARE - a good wide-margined copy. Second edition of the work which brought MacPhail's forcing frame and controversial method of cultivation to the public view. McPhail was gardener to Lord Hawkesbury at Addiscombe Place in Surrey. The brick frame was of his own design and a notable feature of this book is the detailed weather observations covering a complete year together with the precise treatment given to the plants on each day. The frame proved immensely popular and within 40 years Rogers 1839 was to state " an excellent invention that has certainly rendered the forcing of this vegetable more simple.there are few gentleman's gardens and few principal market gardens without them". . The Planter's Guide Or A Practical Essay on the Best Method of Giving Immediate Effect to Wood by the Removal of Large Trees and Underwood; Being an Attempt to Place the Art and that of Geneneral Arboriculture on Fixed and Phytological Principles
Edinburgh and London: John Murray 1828. Second edition greatly improved and enlarged. Illustrated with six engraved plates octavo pp xxxviii 527 sadly the plates are heavily foxed which has also affected the neighbouring page howver the remainder of the text is remarkably clean and very tight and sound; bound in a contemporary half calf rubbed rebacked sympathetically with a new calf spine. lightly tipped-in at the first page is a small advertisement leaf warning of 'sundry ignorant and uneducated persons' attempting to pass themselves off as having been trained by Henry Steuart - this seems to be scarce. Steuart 1759 - 1836 was a Scottish landowner agricultural improver soldier and classical scholar. Owing to bad health Steuart abandoned most of his literary work and experiments in arboriculture became the chief interest of his life. In September 1823 a deputation from the Highland and Agricultural Society which included Sir Walter Scott and Lords Belhaven and Corehouse visited Allanton and reported on the improvements effected there by Steuart's system of transplanting large trees. Though he had had to contend with an unfavourable soil and an exposed position he attained at no extraordinary expense the power so long desired of anticipating the slow progress of vegetation and accomplishing within two or three seasons those desirable changes in the face of nature which he who plants in early youth can in ordinary cases only hope to witness in advanced life. From this time Steuart frequently corresponded with Sir Walter who imitated several of Steuart's experiments at Abbotsford. When in 1828 Steuart published this work Scott reviewed it enthusiastically in the Quarterly March. When Scott visited Allanton in January 1829 in company with Lockhart he noted in his journal: Sir Henry is a sad coxcomb and lifted beyond the solid earth by the effect of his book's success. But the book well deserves it. The book was also favourably reviewed by Southwood Smith in the Westminster Review by Professor Wilson Christopher North in Blackwood's Magazine April 1828 and in the Edinburgh Review March 1829. It had a large circulation in America. In his preface to the second edition Steuart claims to have made the first attempt to apply the principles of physiology to practical arboriculture and to have created the new science of phytology. The title continues "Likewise a new method of improving moss etc together with valuable receipts for destroying vermin on bushes hedges trees etc.". Small octavo pp xxviiii 228 a folding chart at the rear a little stained light age-toning and foxing with 7 woodcut chapter heads and tail-pieces the hinge at the title page cracking slightly but still perfectly sound bound in later green cloth. RARE. From the library of the nurseryman Will Ingwersen with his bookplate on the front endpaper. The folding chart lists the number of plants which can be grown in an acre either Scots or English. The title page states that Hall was late gardener and nurseryman to the Hon. Family of Cromarty. The letters V.D.M.E.D. appear after his name. Apart from that bleak information I can find nothing further on the author. The intriguing thing is that over half the book is devoted to catalogues of florists' flowers which is not mentioned in the title. These were obviously for sale but prices are not given. Nor are there descriptions but the extent of the lists makes them invaluable for cultivar names. Hyacinths Tulips Ranunculus Anenomes Bulbous Iris Auriculas Carnations Pinks finishing with evergreen and flowering shrubs and a few seeds. Hyacinths by no means the longest list contains over 300 cultivar names alone. Whilst it is perhaps not surprising that Harman Payne failed to spot this book for his Florist's Bibliography it is strange that it also evaded the eagle eye of Ray Desmond who fails to mentiong the author in his Dictionary. Illustrated with a frontispiece and nine engraved plates of which eight are folding Apparently lacking one plate small octavo pp iv xxxv i 43iii 4 35-309 vii much of the text rather browned and age-toned a fair few signs of use though all very tight the first fifty pages or so have a fair anount of pencil notes and underlinings see illustration with a little more on pages 179-199 contemporary calf rubbed and cracked but soundrebacked with a fairly recent calf spine raised bands new endpapers apparently by Bayntuns. The folding plates are rather worn and creased occasionally frayed at the margins; two have old sellotape repairs and one is rather badly torn across but without loss. The pagination is erratic and appears incorrect but it actuall ties in exactly with the contents pages at the rear. In this copy "An advertisement of J. Evelyn Esq." as mentioned by Blanche Henrey is bound immediately after the title page. LACKING ONE PLATE. Quintinie was in charge of the royal fruit and vegetable gardens under Louis XV. "His book shows his deep knowledge of every aspect of kitchen gardening" - Taylor. George London and Henry Wise were garden designers and nurserymen and formed one of the most important garden design practices in the history of British gardening. Sweet was a prominent botanist and gardener of his day. He published both expensive colour plate works and also practical manuals such as this. The second edition is preferable - it is much updated and with four extra plates. Blanche Henrey 1375. The pineapple had been grown for many decades in England but it was Speechly 1735 - 1819 who improved the design and structure of the houses. He discovered that the plants should not be kept at too hot a temperature in the winter and experimented with forcing pineapples in beds of oak leaves instead of the comparatively expensive and unpredictable tanner's bark. The author received much help from the amateur botanist James Dickson which contributed immensely to the value of the book as a record of the mosses fungi and algae of the county. The Thirkleby Park library copy with book label on the front endpaper and Thomas Frankland's stamped signature on the verso of all the title pages. Sir Thomas Frankland was a notable botanist. This book seems considerably scarcer than the translation of Rayer's other work of 1835. Pierre François Olive Rayer 1793 - 1867 was a French physician who was a native of Saint Sylvain. A highly important work in the history of grass taxonomy and with an impeccable provenance - from the library of Allen Wedgewood with the Gallipoli bookplate and thence to C.E. Hubbard with his signature. RARE. Hubbard was the foremost grass taxonomist of the twentieth century. Wedwood was the son of M.L. Wedgewood with whom he collected until his death during the First World War at Gallipoli aged just 22. M.L. Wedgwood created a herbarium of British plants at Marlborough College MBH as a permanent memorial to her son. The second edition was edited by Albrecht von Haller who added the four appendices as well as descriptions of 70 new plants. Walter Nicol 1769 - 1811 was a Scottish garden and hothouse designer who wrote several books on practical horticulture. An advertisement leaf in this books mentions his terms for garden design and advice at One Guinea per day. He was born in Niddrie. He was employed at a number of estates in Scotland and improved the design and layout of gardens and glasshouses. Nicol is in particular responsible for the walled garden layout at Dalhousie Castle in Midlothian."His works which were of a very high standard became exceedingly popular" - Blanche Henrey 1178. Monteath is described as 'Forester to His Majesty' but he seems an elusive figure and i can find nothing about him; he is not even included in Desmond's Dictionary. With the armorial bookplate of Edward Machen; born as Edward Tomkins Davies in 1783. He was the first of what might be termed the modern Deputy Surveyors of the Forest of Dean. He became the longest serving Deputy Surveyor 1808 to 1854 and had a significant impact upon the landscape structure of the Forest that we know today. He changed his name to Edward Machen in 1816 after inheriting Eastbach Court from his Uncle and at that point he assumed his Uncles surname. He had oversight of the Forest from the time of the Dean Forest Timber Act of 1808 and with the support of Lord Glenbervie Surveyor General of Woods he set about the landscape scale enclosure and planting of the Forest with oak. He established Whitemead Park as the principle offices of the Office of Woods in 1814 and where he lived after moving from Eastbach Court. He was in charge at the time of the Warren James Riots of 1831 and was an important member of the Parliamentary Commission that sat in the years after the riots. That Commission was responsible for key aspects of the Deans cultural landscape the regularisation of squatter cottages and the regularisation of mining. After retiring Edward was elected as a Verderer in 1860. He was a recognised and influential figure in the community. Third edition. Cloth. Good. A scarce work and a liuttle-known author. Of German extraction he became chief forest-master to the King of Prussia. He came to England in 1770 and was appointed deputy-surveyor-general of the Royal forests. After serving in the War of American Independence he returned and entered the wine trade - a move which led to both him and his father being declared banrupt. Quarto pp 22 559 21 the title page with an engraved woodut printer's device is slightly creased and is lightly marked and toned with two slight rust stains and the remains of two small labels - the one on the recto in red and partially removed the second probably on the verso and completely removed but both have left the paper very thin at these points; otherwise the text is remarkably clean and without any major marks or stains. The date appears on the printer's colophon at the rear and the verso has another version of the woodcut printer's device. Recently bound in full panelled speckled calf with simple gilt decoration the spine with plain raised bands and a morocco label plain endpapers. RARE. Lucius Caecilius Firmianus signo Lactantius c. 250 - c. 325 was an early North African Christian author who became an advisor to Roman emperor Constantine I guiding his Christian religious policy in its initial stages of emergence and a tutor to his son Crispus. His most important work is the Institutiones Divinae "The Divine Institutes" an apologetic treatise intended to establish the reasonableness and truth of Christianity to pagan critics. He is best known for his apologetic works widely read during the Renaissance by humanists who called Lactantius the "Christian Cicero". The Basle printer Henricus Petrus was responsible for the publication of very important works including an early edition of Copernicus and Munster's Cosmographia. He printed this Latin and Greek edition of Lactantius' work in a mixture of roman single column italic double column with the indices in triple column and with a few woodut initials. This is the first appearance of of the commentary by Xystus Betuleius who composed German and Latin didactic dramas this commentary and also another on Cicero; and a concordance of the Greek New Testament. Small thick quarto pp 12 520 26 illustrated with an engraved title page an engraved frontispiece though here bound in after the preliminary pages and 45 plates of 46 - lacking the plate which occupied pages 55/56 some age-toning and slight foxing throughout the plates a bit more browned but without the intense browning often found in this book overall quite tight internally one preliminary page and pages 395-398 protruding slightly and a little chipped and frayed at the margins full vellum binding probably original rather used and marked but quite sound and firm the upper and lower cover a bit warped and bowed the front hinge cracked but firm and showing traces of old glue. The first Italian edition. Ferrari 1584 - 1655 was an Italian Jesuit and professor in Rome and a botanist. He devoted himself till 1632 to the study and cultivation of ornamental plants and published De Florum Cultura which was illustrated with copperplates by amongst others Anna Maria Vaiani possibly the first female copper-engraver. The first book deals with the design and maintenance of the garden and garden equipment. The second book provides descriptions of the different flowers while the third book deals with the culture of these flowers. The fourth book continues with a treatise on the use and beauty of the flower species including their different varieties and mutations. The plants featured in Ferrari's research came from Cardinal Francesco Barberini's private botanical garden the Horti Barberini a garden which was under the care of Ferrari. Several Cape bulbs are illustrated for the first time - most notably Haemanthus coccinea but also Amaryllis bella-donna Brunsvigia orientalis and Ferraria crispa. Hunt Library Catalogue rather downbeat in its comment - "The fame rests more on the quality of the engraved plates than on their contribution to botanical knowledge". Small octavo pp viii 248 slightly age-toned but remarkably clean internally bound in an unusual later binding probably late Victorian quarter morocco and cloth slightly worn and marked; however the upper cover is detached. Cohausen 1665-1750 was a physician and well-known author in Germany France and England . He was best known for medical satire such as the Pica Nasi a Latin parody on snuff in which Apollo ordered Mercury to confiscate the noses of snuff-takers. When the satyrs returned them the desperate victims grabbed the wrong noses and were unrecognizable. Cohausens last and most famous medical satire his Hermippus redivivus 1742 is a treatise on the prolongation of life. Studies of Cohausen and the Hermippus have been largely antiquarian; the only scholarly works are a French dissertation concerning his medical biography done in 1900 and a short German bibliographic study. Because Cohausen has been primarily known for medical satire his large number of serious treatises on iatrochemistry and medicine which served as the basis for his more humorous works have been largely unexamined. The Hermippus and its comedic presentation of longevity had a profound reliance on earlier scholarly works of his that analysed the theories of the seventeenth-century chymist and physician Jean Baptiste van Helmont 1577-1634. Genova: Pietro Giovanni Calenzani 1659. Octavo pp 4 236 intermittent browning and light foxing otherwise tight and sound internally contemporary vellum age-toned and a little marked. The front endpaper bears a label identifying this copy as from the cookery collection of John Hodgkin FLS. A scarce edition - an early note on the endpaper possibly by Hodgkin comments that it is not mentioned in the bibliographies of Drexel or Vicaire. John Hodgkin FLS was born in Birmingham in 1857 the son of John Eliot Hodgkin and Sarah Ransome. In 1881 he was living with his parents in Richmond Surrey and working as an analyst for a medical firm. In 1889 he married Grace Stock and they had three sons. Like his father John Hodgkin had a keen interest in bibliography. He assembled a notable collection of books on the subject of cookery some of which now form part of the Cookery Collection at Leeds University Library along with his extensive notes on the bibliography of cookery and housekeeping whilst others are at Wellcome. He died in 1930 after which his collection was sold and dispersed. The Trattato of Baldassarre Pisanelli doctor in Bologna and Rome died around 1587 had great success between the fifteenth and seventeenth century thanks to its simple structure and ease of consultation. Dedicated to Guglielmo Gonzaga Duke of Mantova and Monferrato the dietary treaty contains good eating tips and takes into account many foods present on the tables of the lords fruit vegetables aromatic herbs cereals and legumes meat fish milk and dairy products wine. The treatise lists the main characteristics of each food elettione the benefits the potential damages the remedies the grades the best consumption time etadi complessioni; in addition Pisanelli writes on the right pages a brief historia naturalis of each food with interesting curiosities on the use of food. Noteworthy are the observations inspired by a hierarchical view of society: the tripe is a type of food for working hard people young partridges have a damaging effect only on rustic people. Pork harms sensitive and lazy people but is suitable for people who fatigues a lot; the best way to eat it is roasted with spices.Porchette usually eaten with great curiosity should be avoided because harmful but if the pig is of considerable age it will be a great source of nourishment. Two volumes; with two engraved plates slightly marked at the margins small thick octavo pp lxvi 487; 8 564 edpapers age-toned at the margins the first volume suffers from some marginal worm holes early on but between pages 365 & 386 the little beast has eaten the upper margin so much that several pieces are nearly detached see illustration otherwise the volumes are both clean and tight internally with just a few turned corners; contemporary roan marked and scuffed joints a little worn the upper joint cracked slightly in each volume leather labels in black and red on the spines. Dickson was born in 1721 at Aberlady and studied at Edinburgh University where he took the degree of M.A. He passed his life between his cherished country employments on a large farm of his father's where he lost no opportunity of gathering experience from the conversation of the neighbouring farmers and the duties of his holy office. Having early shown a great taste for agriculture he watched its processes carefully and made rapid progress in it as he always connected practice with theory. On moving to Dunse he found more real improvements in the art and also more difficulties to be surmounted than had been the case in East Lothian. Observing that English works on agriculture were ill adapted to the soil and climate of Scotland and consisted of theories rather than facts supported by experience he determined to compose a "Treatise on Agriculture" on a new plan. The first edition of this appeared in 1762 and was followed by a second in 1770. This treatise is practical and excellently adapted to the farming of Scotland its first four books treating of soils tillage and manures in general the other four of schemes of managing farms usual in Scotland at that time and suggestions for their improvement. "Probably the most important of the authors of the period". And fifty years later J.C. Loudon wrote "decidedly the best work on tillage which has appeared in the English language and was and still is held in universal esteem among the practical farmers of Scotland". New Edition. From the library of the gardening historian Anthony Huxley with his stamp on the front endpaper. RARE. First published in 1767 the Sir John Soane Library suggests this is probably the third edition of this pattern book although the second could also be possible. Anton von Storck 1731 - 1803 was an Austrian physician. Storck is remembered for his clinical research of various herbs and their associated toxicity and medicinal properties. His studies are considered to be the pioneering work of experimental pharmacology and his method can be regarded as forming a blueprint for the clinical trials of modern medicine. He was convinced that plants regarded as poisonous still had medicinal applications if employed in carefully controlled quantities. Störck was particularly interested in the medical possibilities of plants such as hemlock henbane jimsonweed and autumn crocus. His experiments with these plants involved a three-step process; initially used on animals followed by a personal trial and finally given to his patients all the while maintaining a "sliding-scale" approach to determine the optimum dosage. Störck's numerous Latin medical tracts detailing his experiments into the therapeutic effects of poisonous plants excited great interest and were translated into German French English Dutch and Portuguese rapidly becoming influential medical texts throughout Europe. In effect the third edition though the preceeding two have the title "The Scots Gardiners Director". Sir James Justice 1698 - 1763 was a Scottish horticulturalist/gardener. His works on gardening were distributed in much of Britain and Ireland. He reportedly had a passion for botanical experiments which he pursued at the expense of his finances and family. Indeed the later miniaturist John Kay wrote that tulipomania was the cause of him parting with his estate at Crichton and the purchase of a smaller one. His divorce and expulsion from the Fellowship in the Royal Society has been blamed on the expenses he put into greenhouses and soil mixtures. He was responsible for a huge change in the Garden's accessions and oversaw the move to the present site at Inverleith Walk; a transition for which he designed a crude yet effective tree transplanter for moving many mature specimens. Statical Essays Containing Vegetable Staticks or an account of some statical experiments on the sap in vegetables : being an essay towards a natural history of vegetation
At the West-End of St Paul's London: W. Innys & R. Manby 1738. Third edition with amendments. Small octavo pp xiv 376 illustrated with 19 engraved plates small octavo pp xiv 376 slight signs of age-toning and dustiness but generall quite clean internally the front endpaper detached contemporary full calf poor the covers nearly detached. In Vegetable Staticks Hales studied transpiration - the loss of water from the leaves of plants. He estimated the surface area of the leaves of the plant and the length and surface area of the roots. This allowed Hales to compare the calculated influx of water into the plant with the amount of water leaving the plant by transpiration through the leaves. He also measured 'the force of the sap' or root pressure. Hales commented that "plants very probably draw through their leaves some part of their nourishment from the air". He prefigured the cohesion theory of water movement in plants although his ideas were not understood at the time so he did not influence the debate on water transport in plants in the 19th century. He also speculated that plants might use light as a source of energy for growth i.e. photosynthesis based on Isaac Newtons suggestion that "gross bodies and light" might be interconvertible. He also describes experiments that showed that "air freely enters plants not only with the principal fund of nourishment by the roots but also thro the surface of their trunks and leaves". While Hales work on the chemistry of air appears primitive by modern standards its importance was acknowledged by Antoine Lavoisier the discoverer of oxygen. Hales invention of the pneumatic trough to collect gases over water is also considered a major technical advance. Modified forms of the pneumatic trough were later used by William Brownrigg Henry Cavendish and Joseph Priestley in their research. Blanche Henrey 779. Full-Leather. Good. W. Innys & R. With four engraved plates small octavo t.p. 201326 133-406 2-page publisher's catalogue browning and age-toning with occasional blotching a corner torn from the first blank a worm-hole in the margin of the early pages but only really noticeable on the first eleven pages tight internally original calf rubbed and pocked neatly re-backed with new unlettered leather spine the original endpapers retained. In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. Little is known of the author but the work in its first edition was highly praised by both John Evelyn and Samuel Gilbert.
