Thee volumes well illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece and 119 hand coloured plates as usual the plates are erratically bound but all are present all edges gilt in Volume 2 bound in modern blue cloth with only very slight signs of use. Despite the rather plain binding the contents are overall in remarkably bright condition. There is a little offsetting of plate on to text and occasionally of text on to plate but there are only six plates where this is really noticeable and of these plate 91 is rather poor. In Volume 1 the second plate is bound slightly on a skew so that the margin protrudes slightly at the top and fore-edge; in Volume 2 a number of the descriptive leaves are bound together at the end rather than opposite the plate they describe. Volume 3 concludes with Thortnon's "Sketch of the Life and Writings of the Late Mr William Curtis 33 pages. Ignoring the minor oddities of the set there is a remarkable freshness about the paper quality and the colouring. . First Edition. Cloth. Good. William Phillips Hardcover

The conclusion offers six pages of "General observations" on the care of potted plants. Published anonymously the author was Elizabeth Kent the sister-in-law of the writer Leigh Hunt. A superb copy uncut and unpressed in a very sympathetic binding. Walter Nicol 1769 - 1811 was a Scottish garden and hothouse designer who wrote several books on practical horticulture. He was born in Niddrie. He was employed at a number of estates in Scotland and improved the design and layout of gardens and glasshouses. Nicol is in particular responsible for the walled garden layout at Dalhousie Castle in Midlothian."His works which were of a very high standard became exceedingly popular" - Blanche Henrey 1187. First published in 1805 it was a huge success and several editions followed; the book sold around half a million copies in Rundell's lifetime. The book was aimed at middle class housewives. In addition to dealing with food preparation it offers advice on medical remedies and how to set up a home brewery and includes a section entitled "Directions to Servants". The book contains an early recipe for tomato sauce - possibly the first - and the first recipe in print for Scotch eggs. The Science of Good Husbandry: or the Oeconomics of Xenophon. Shewing the Method of Ruling and Ordering a Family and of Managing a Farm to the Best Advantage

Small octavo pp 8 131 pages slightly waved as this is an unpressed copy occasional slight creases or marks a slim marginal worm-hoile affects the lower margin of a few leaves but overall a very clean copy internally endpapers a little stained a small contemporary signature label on the front endpaper contemporary mottled calf a simple single marginal gilt line rather worn at the edges the lower cover scuffed rebacked at a later stage with a simple calf spine raised bands and a black title label. The covers slightly bowed. RARE. Little is known about Bradley's childhood aside from an early interest in gardening and the fact that he lived in the vicinity of London a city at the time with many amateur naturalists. Though Bradley lacked a university education his first publication Treatise of Succulent Plants gained him traction with influential patrons like James Petiver and later Hans Sloane. With their support he was proposed and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1712 at the age of 24. Two years later Bradley visited the Netherlands and took an interest in horticulture. He spent the next decade back in England writing treatises on topics related to this central interest like weather fertiliser productivity and plant hybridisation. In recognition of his work in the field and with the thereafter unfulfilled promise that he would found and fund a university botanical garden the University of Cambridge named Bradley its first professor of botany in 1724 a position he would hold until his death. As Bradley was not a wealthy man in his later life and as this was an unsalaried position the newly minted academic continued to focus most of his efforts on making a living through publishing. According to his rival and successor John Martyn as well as his successor son Thomas Martyn Bradley did this at the expense of his students whom he reportedly neglected to even lecture to. Bradley made notable innovations and discoveries across a wide array of disciplines. For example this work included directions for the making and use of a rudimentary kaleidoscope to aid in formal garden design and layout. He also wrote about cooking and was the first to publish recipes in the English language using the then-exotic pineapple as the main ingredient. His History of Succulent plants was the seminal treatise on the topic and his studies of tulips and auriculas helped further accurate theories of plant reproduction. Bradley was also a pioneer in the examining of fungal spore germination and the pollination of plants by insects. His publications additionally contained information on how to build and use greenhouses early theories regarding agricultural productivity and pond ecology. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good. De Combles wrote the original anonymously in 1745 when it was the first work on the subject in France. The English edition is also anonymous and Henrey speculates that of the various booksellers mentioned on the title page "J. Illustrated with three simple hand-coloured plates octavo pp xii 378 extremely clean and sound inyternally half calf and marbled boards raised bands and leather label to the spine very slight signs of wear. With the armorial bookplate of Sir Charles William Hamilton 2nd Baronet and his small neat signature on the title page. Phillips lived much of his life on the south coast and gained a national reputation as a landscape gardener. His first plan for the development of a lrge site in Kemp Town Brighton was rejected but the second attempt five years later was accepted. His grandiose Anthaeum project an elaborate indoor botanical garden topped by "the largest dome in the world" ended in disaster when the structure spectacularly collapsed just before its official opening. His ideas on the layout of plants and flowers in relation to their surroundings were influential. When Brighton and Hove City Council restored the gardens and grounds of the Royal Pavilion to show how they would have appeared at the height of the Regency era they did so according to Phillips' ideas - specifically his belief that "a well-planted shrubbery depends on the selection of trees and shrubs which succeed each other in blossoming throughout the year as well as contrasting shades of green . and under-planted flowers". With the book label of the physician and botanist Thomas Bell Salter. Of the utmost rarity. At the age of 19 Lindley was taken under the wing of William Jackson Hooker who at that time was still living in Halesworth before his move the following year to Glasgow. Lindley was impressed with a book he found in Hooker's extensive botanical library - Richard's "Demonstrations botaniques ou Analyse du Fruit considere en general" of 1808. He translated the work into English working for three days non-stop. When published it included six plates from Lindley's original drawings. The title page claims it includes the author's latest corrections and Stearn points out that the preface rejects Linnaeus' system of classification in favour of the the natural orders of Jussieu. This is the first book and the first published illustrations of the "father of modern orchidology" - one of the most importand and dominant figures of Victorian botany. First Edition. Boards. Good. Former owner's address label mounted on lower front flyleaf one leaf pp. 29-30 mended with archival tape. Not the first leather-bound copy we've encountered so we suspect that this copy is not rebound but rather one of a limited number of specially-bound copies original to issue also issued in cloth and most commonly gray wraps lettered in burgundy and black.
