Morse a young Massachusetts woman in her junior year at Wellesley College. A gifted and self-aware diarist Ethel offers an extraordinary first-person account of women’s higher education and same-sex emotional life at the turn of the century written decades before such affections could be safely expressed. The diary reveals the inner world of a bright privileged New England student raised in an academic household her father a teacher who struggles to reconcile intellectual ambition with forbidden desire. From a family of means Ethel writes with wit and precision but as would be expected of a young woman caught up in the throes of academia social pressures and romance her composure sometimes frays. She chronicles her daily life with a focus on her all-consuming attachment to another student named Anna. This love story which is likely largely occurring in Ethel’s own mind is frequently impeded by the rest of the girls’ social world. Particularly challenging for Ethel is her growing jealousy toward Grace who seems to be Anna’s roommate and a rival for her attention: “…Returned to college…Poor mother rather sober and weepy at having me leave her…Mother wanted to see Anna dear child! And also to see me off. It wasn't any more satisfactory to us though for it was lots harder for her and thus for me. Trunk had arrived when I got here…Tucked myself into bed about ten under my new slumber robe that Grace gave me” Jan 7 1904. “Grace went home in p. M. After waiting for 4 o'clock mail for letter from Brooklyn. Wonder why Anna going to spend Sunday with me. Won't it be fun - seem so good to have her all to myself to talk to and love all I want to. Telephone to Howard. Said he couldn't come out tonight anyway…Was coming out tomorrow until I asked him not to…made me feel so cheeky - but what could I do ” Jan 23 1904. Tension between Ethel Anna and Grace are not uncommon: “Called to a meeting of the Cap and Gown committee today never realized until now that being on this committee meant a free gown… Evening spent mostly at Anna’s. Sort of puzzled in my mind. Can’t decide upon something—what happened between Grace and Anna when they were together a week ago Saturday. ” Mar. 3 1904. The rivalry soon becomes personal and wounding: “What a cold reception from Grace! She evidently was overcome by pains of jealousy or something for she hardly spoke refused as near as possible to kiss me etc. ” Mar. 14 1904. From that moment forward the shifting loyalties between the three girls dominate Ethel’s emotional life. Her affection for Anna is openly romantic: “…Anna came over about 10 to see me—she’s just back from home. Sweet child! How good it seems to have her back! She’s certainly my little ‘crush’…” Feb. 9 1904. As the semester advances her self-reproach grows sharper: “…Why was I ever made with any feelings any love for anyone—much less with such a jealous streak in me… The attitude of the two girls has been as queer toward me today as if they said ‘Poor girl! She is awfully silly but to make her feel better we’ll baby her…’” Apr. 27 1904. Throughout Morse documents the emotional grammar of female friendship at Wellesley—deeply affectionate coded and often indistinguishable from romantic attachment. “I doubt sometimes whether Anna cares for me—in fact I know she doesn’t fully reciprocate all I feel… Oh if only I didn’t care so much for her! She is a regular spell to me. The minute I see her everything seems to be harder to say. ” Apr. 25 1904. In May she vows independence: “In spite of everything I was going to forget about Anna and Ruth and live my life with nobility and power… Perhaps this is just what I need to make me strong in my own strength. ” May 25 1904. Longer excerpts that take us from the summer after junior year into the autumn of senior year give further flavour to Ethel’s diary: “.Was surprised about one o'clock by Anna. Such a good time we had! We just talked talked and talked some more! It all seemed quite like old times. She looks yet very tired though. I fear that the hard work at home wears on other more than she realizes. She's a dear girl. I can't help loving her very dearly. We simply made her stay to dinner. I went home to Dudley Street with her on the electric. Two weeks from today we have planned a day at Nantucket together. We and our two dear mothers…” July 11 1904. “Anna here with us tonight. Arrived before I knew it.It seems too good to have the dear child here. There is something about her which I simply can't resist. When college closed I felt a little hardened toward her - I couldn't help it - but somehow I seem to have lost all that. To me she seems quite like her old self. Only I have knocked out a little of my foolishness in regard to her. I admit I was very foolish at one time. - but we all must be foolish in one way or another” August 18 1904. “Another beautiful day - only Anna had to go home. It seemed indeed lonely here tonight without her beside me in bed. I forgot to say anything about that heart to heart talk we had until 10 last night. We just opened right up for the first time since that little fuss this spring. We found we had both forgiven and almost forgotten as near as we could. We just discussed everything and felt better for it. She was so mad when I wrote her that last note but she never has said one word about it to her mother or any of the family. I thought once that she had and that they were a little prejudiced against me for it. How cold anyone blame them! Yet I was not the only one in the wrong. Her queer silence about all her own affairs this spring - which hurt Ruth and me so much. She explained by saying our attitude.” August 23 1904. “.But ever with such a happy day my mind is far from happy tonight. The same old suspense. The heart still pains the wound doesn't heal. If it weren't for Ruth I would pick up everything I possess and go home. In such an atmosphere I cannot live. Mother referred to Anna tonight. I say nothing and try to keep her from knowing how I feel at heart. If only I can keep up the role and act as if all were right between us but I fear I can't long” Oct 28 1904. “.And this afternoon Anna and I have been having a new experience. We were invited…by Marian Berry to be rushed so the girls say. Of course we are too modest to believe them though. Haha! Imagine our being invited! Imagine the awful blow to them when they received our replies! Bust we won't worry about such . In the air when they are of such a very doubtful and terrible character” Dec 2 1904. Taken together the diary stands as a rare early expression of female same-sex affection jealousy and emotional education within an elite women’s college. Of special research value to scholars of Gender and Queer Studies women’s higher education and the history of emotion it captures the interior life of a woman learning both to feel and to contain feeling in Edwardian America. The book is nearly full written in a page-a-day 1904 datebook measuring approx. 6.25 × 4 inches its pages densely covered in tight legible script. Only a few days are left blank and the book is about 90% complete. Two pressed four-leaf clovers remain between the pages dated May 25 1904 which Ethel noted as “symbols of the day of good luck. ” Bound in maroon leather with gilt edges the volume is well preserved spine sound writing crisp. Overall VG condition. BIO NOTES: Ethel Almira Morse 1882–1966 was born in South Natick Massachusetts to Herbert Leonard Morse 1855–1930 a teacher and Sarah Adeline Jones 1857–1936. She was educated at the Girls’ Latin School in Boston Class of 1900 and entered Wellesley College Class of 1905. Afterward she attended a commercial school in Boston and later taught in the commercial department of the Salem Normal School Boston Evening Transcript Sept 5 1912. In 1916 she married Lyndon Blaine Tewksbury 1878–1947 a Yale graduate and salesman; they lived in Boston and had three children: Lyndon Jr. Frances and Hamilton. She died in 1966. On offer is a wonderful archive of nine 9 original 1920 manuscript handwritten letters; eight envelopes as one includes two letters ranging in length from two pages to 12 pages by Elaine M. Hannay 1904-1991 a 16-year-old student at Gould Hall Northfield Seminary for Girls Northfield Massachusetts. Hannay writes each letter to her mother Lena McDonald Hannay 1868-1947 in Ballston Spa New York between February and May 1920. Elaine is a lively letter writer and covers many aspects of life at the school and of particular interest to collectors and historians of women's and gender studies will be her "crush" which she brings and then denies in the same sentence in her May 2nd letter on fellow student Edith Dorothea Witt. These letters highlight the experiences of young women discovering themselves in an era of close female friendships but devoid of open dialogue relating to same-sex attraction. Research shows that neither Hannay nor Witt ever married. Both lived with females in their older adulthood though Hannay declared her living companion a border while Witt who worked as an obstetrician and surgeon declared her companion a life partner and in fact is buried beside her. There were 15 of us and we went all the way to Garnet Rock and back. It was terribly steep and we slipped and slid but had piles of fun. As you know I never was on snowshoes before in my life but I was soon scampering along in the liveliest fashion. . Well I've made a nut of myself. If you could see me you would you would probably disown me. I was amusing myself before dinner by fussing with my hair and I took the hair from my hair receiver stuffed it under at the sides and made some regular "cootie garages" with a string of hair drawn straight back to hold them down. Then I pulled the front way down. And put a hair net over the whole thing and went down to dinner--Miss Trowbridge there and everything. The kitchen girls yelled at me everybody yelled at me several people complimented Mary was delighted and on the whole I don't like it” Feb 15 1920. I am going to a Student Volunteer meeting this evening with Dorothea Witt otherwise known as "Sonny". I got Mary Lincoln to wash my hair and she certainly did a thorough job. It's so dry and fine I can't do a thing with it. Last night I had it crimped and a hair net over it and you should have seen Witt rave! She hates my hair done up and she simply clawed at that net. But I like her. She says what she thinks and is a fine sport. She comes from Panama and can't go home until she graduates from here! I'll send you a picture of her sometime when I get it” Feb 22 1920. “I've ordered my railroad ticket for the 7: 21 train Friday morning. Hattie has promised to meet me & I just have to let her know the time. Now can you please tell me whether I can get home Friday night or not & how. Talk about corresponding early. I think it's high time. Gosh me! Vacation begins next Friday! Only four days. Are the roads terrible Goodness! I'll be glad to be home and sleep. I believe I am tired. . Witt is a dandy girl and I feel awfully sorry for her. Of course her home is in Panama and she can't go home until she graduates. Of course she works hard in school not only on lessons but outdoors in outdoor sports. She worked here at the hotel all Christmas vacation then came back to school again. Now she has agreed to work again all Easter vacation and she's tired out. She agreed to do it before she realized how tired she is and she won't change her mind because one girl accused her of being fickle-minded and she wants to prove she's not. She's absolutely worn out and yet she won't get any rest at vacation and she'll come back and study until June and next Summer she's going to be a farmerette” March 15 1920. “Monday I went tinpanning in the afternoon. It's lots of fun. Did you ever do it Just take a tin tray sit down on it and slide down hill frontwards backwards or sideways. We slid down chapel hill this side of Stone Hill and down the hill back of the gym. That one is awfully steep. . In the evening we dressed up and went to Stone Hall to hear a singer and Mrs. Daley tell about the presidential campaign. I was dead tired but wanted to go so put on my waist and Mary's skirt wore my arctics over Mary's oxfords and my holey stockings my high shoes and only whole stockings were wet twisted up my hair and jazzed along. Mary didn't go and Cappy and Witt stayed home and turned sommersaults. Mrs. Daley's talk was awfully good” Mar. 17 1920. Travel plans home have apparently been delayed and Elaine is staying at the hotel in which Witt works. “Friday afternoon Witt came down almost as soon as we had had dinner. We talked for a while and then went over to Gould Hall for my other suitcasefull of things. . 45 girls are still stranded at the school. Well the first thing on deck was to invite some Hermanites boy students from the neighboring Mt. Herman school over Saturday night about 50 for us to entertain. . Well it turned out to be just like our young peoples' parties. We played a game with little green bows. Every one had one to begin with and if you could make anyone say "Yes" or "No" you could demand his or her bow. I ended up with eight” March 21 1920. "Mary has come up but has gone for a walk with Ruth so I shall write until Witt finishes her tins and then perhaps go for a walk with her. What do you suppose Mary told me today That she was jealous of Witt! Now what am I to do I confess I go around with Witt more than with her but she goes with Ruth although she says she doesn't like her and Witt and I are friends and Cappy goes with us too. We would be glad to have Mary go with us but she won't because she doesn't like Witt. . Was so glad to hear that you thought we might arrange to have Witt in the summer. . And August will be the time to have her because Cappy and her friend at East are going to be here the first part of the summer but not the last and she will be here alone you know what I mean ” April 25 1920. “I am writing this from Witt's room where I am spending the week-end. . Mary is staying alone and said she expected to have a lovely time but tonight in the kitchen she fell on my neck and begged me to come back. I guess she'll have to stand it until tomorrow though. I am enjoying myself immensely. Last night we kept quiet until Miss Goulding retired we went to the bathroom to make sure she was safe and then we each ate a popcorn ball and talked a while. It was eleven before I went to sleep. . I admire Witt more every day but don't worry about my getting a "crush" on her. We are chums and a "crush" is noncompatible with that term. But her ideas and ideals and determination are wonderful and she's better than a sermon every time. . How I wish I were like her! . Mary had Mrs. La Bella to supper Monday night and then went to the lecture with her and Ruth and I went with Witt. I returned to my own bed and spouse after the lecture” May 2 1920. “If Miss Moody will let me I am going to spend this week-end with Witt too. She seems to want me and Mary says she doesn't mind" May 7 1920. "I am with Witt again for the week-end and it is nearly lights out Sunday night. . Describing a trip to the Reservoir with several other girls We took sandwiches -- cheese apple butter and honey -- from Gould a whole one apiece also some chocolate cake. The others got some doughnuts from Woodbury's. I ate six slices of bread three sandwiches and two crullers and had just enough then. We leaned over and drank out of the reservoir and had our pictures taken and then went up into the woods for arbitus. . P. S. Taken together these extremely well-preserved letters all G to VG with very little signs of age aside from toning and some heavy fold lines shine a light into the world of young women coming-of-age together in an America that was beginning to redefine womanhood education and intimacy in the wake of World War I and on the cusp of women’s suffrage. Hannay’s correspondence captures this transitional cultural moment—when girls’ schools functioned as both sanctuaries of discipline and laboratories of emotional discovery. Through her candid observations humor and affection for her classmate Dorothea Witt these letters trace the subtle formation of identity desire and self-awareness that prefigured later movements for gender and sexual equality. BIO NOTES: Elaine M. Hannay 1904-1991 was born to Lena McDonald 1868-1947 and John V Hannay likely 1866-1938 in Schenectady New York. Hannay never married. She worked as a social worker in children’s welfare in New York eventually becoming a supervisor. She seems to have lived with her mother Lena in New York until her death. In the 1950 census Elaine is indicated as single never married. She is working as a Supervisor at the Job Welfare Board and living with a colleague Elizabeth Nicol who is a social worker at the same workplace. Nicol is indicated as a “lodger” on the census. News records show she was heavily involved in women’s business causes in New York chairing the Schenectady Business and Professional Women’s Association club. Dr. Edith Dorothea Witt 1903-1975 was born to parents Stephen and Edith Annie Witt in Costa Rica. Her father was a British missionary so the family moved around a lot and each of her siblings was born in a different country. During the time Witt and Hannay attended school together her parents were stationed in Panama where they lived and worked for 20 years. Witt became a surgeon and obstetrician serving for 11 years as a medical missionary in the Congo and then joining the staff at Baptist and Sara Mayo hospital in Louisiana. She never married but lived with a female life partner Jeanette O’Brien 1899-1991 a Registered Nurse. Witt owned a wholesale coffee company. One of the 50 grand luxe proofs printed on China paper with wide margins signed and dated by the artist in the plate. Embossed stamp of the publisher showing a child in profile to lower margin laid down on a leaf of vélin paper with the numbered stamp of the tirage de luxe to verso occasional spotting to margins not touching image blank guard. A magnificent monthly French publication that appeared between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne comprised unpublished chromolithographs that unlike those in other magazines like Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as is stipulated on the guard sheets were specially made by each artist for the magazine. There are thus 100 prints that appeared in total covering the major artistic currents of the late 19th Century: Symbolism Art Nouveau the Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and the Belle époque. Each fascicule of four prints was printed in 2000 copies and sold for 3.50F with 100 on Japan paper sold at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a very luxurious secret printing of 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black and white on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This well-sized print is superbly printed in colors on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick creamy satin and with a nice sheen it contributes to making each page a work of art in itself. Its absorptive qualities for ink and its affinity for colors make it the ideal support for these lovely lithographs. The interest of French collectors for artistic posters grew from the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne invented a term for this growing interest: affichomanie or poster mania. The poster originally not rare and posted up in the streets of the capital thus became a work of art and its ephemeral background became precious and essential for conservation. Piazza decided to extract the poster from its advertising role and to elevate it to a form of art similarly to luxury illustrated artists' books. He thus put together a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most fashionable European artists of the age: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. He also included in this project a Czech artist freshly arrived in Paris Alfonse Mucha “who has only recently become active in France but who has immediately carved out for himself the affection of the public. Like in his posters which everyone knows and covets he shows us here the varied resources of his multifaceted talents as accomplished draughstman decorator and colorist” from the notes printed on the guard for Salomé. The two first special numbers of the review were in fact dedicated to him and were given to “all the subscribers for all twelve annual numbers of L'Estampe moderne” as well as the famous illustration of the covers. One of 50 grand luxe proofs printed on Japan paper with wide margins signed by the artist in the stone publisher's embossed stamp showing a child in profile to lower margin numbered stamp of the de luxe printing to verso upper margin of proof slightly sunned; the print itself preceded by a silk paper guard with the name of the artist the title of the work and an introduction to the artist as well as a blank guard leaf. A magnificent monthly French publication that appeared between May 1897 and April 1899 L'Estampe moderne comprised unpublished chromolithographs that unlike those in other magazines like Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as is stipulated on the guard sheets were specially made by each artist for the magazine. There are thus 100 prints that appeared in total covering the major artistic currents of the late 19th Century: Symbolism Art Nouveau the Pre-Raphaelites Orientalists and the Belle époque. Each fascicule of four prints was printed in 2000 copies and sold for 3.50F with 100 on Japan paper sold at 10F. Henri Piazza also planned a very luxurious secret printing of 50 copies on Japan paper with wide margins and 50 in black and white on China paper at the considerable price of 30F. This well-sized print is superbly printed in colors on the most prestigious of papers: Japan. Thick creamy satin and with a nice sheen it contributes to making each page a work of art in itself. Its absorptive qualities for ink and its affinity for colors make it the ideal support for these lovely lithographs. The interest of French collectors for artistic posters grew from the beginning of the 1890s. Octave Uzanne invented a term for this growing interest: affichomanie or poster mania. The poster originally not rare and posted up in the streets of the capital thus became a work of art and its ephemeral background became precious and essential for conservation. Piazza decided to extract the poster from its advertising role and to elevate it to a form of art similarly to luxury illustrated artists' books. He thus put together a prestigious collection of entirely original works by the most fashionable European artists of the age: Georges de Feure Eugène Grasset Henri Detouche Emile Berchmans Louis Rhead Gaston de Latenay Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer Gustave-Max Stevens Charles Doudelet Hans Christiansen Henri Fantin-Latour Steinlen Ibels Engels Willette Henri Meunier Evenepoël Bellery-Desfontaines Charles Léandre etc. A fine copy of this Art Nouveau style poster.
