A small archive of 30 catalogues newsletters and other early 20th century trade ephemera reflecting the water pumps and motors that were available in Japan in the first quarter of the 20th century. Original wrappers some are folded occasional creasing at margins and minor soiling or browning. Overall very good. Sizes vary from 8.4 x 15.2 to 27 x 39cm. This is an interesting collection of Japanese trade catalogues on water pumps and motors. Written during the Sino-Japanese War at the time when Japanese Red Cross nurses were deployed to the battle fields for the first time this 1895 booklet featuring a Japanese soldier and a nurse on its cover was printed just two days before the end of Sino-Japanese War. <br> <br>The Japanese Red Cross was first established as Hakuaisha in 1877 and renamed as the Japanese Red Cross in 1887 following the ratification by the Japanese government of the Geneva Convention in 1887. This booklet gives the organisation's history and is a translation of an essay written by an American author named Atkinson first name not given. As well as the origin of the Red Cross it also details it's origin principles and provides details of some famous nurses including Florence Nightingale. <br> <br>The timing of this booklet's publication is interesting as it was due to the Sino-Japanese War that the Japanese public learned about the Red Cross nurses for the first time. . 村上俊吉. No publication details. Circa1960. Colourful folding sugoroku game sheet 55 x 79cm a fukuwarai game on reverse does not include face pieces. This is brightly coloured post-war sugoroku is a "round the world" game and this together with the fukuwarai game printed on the reverse would have been enjoyed by Japanese families during the new year celebrations. The game which is colourfully illustrated covers East Asia Southeast Asia New Guinea Africa Europe and North and South Americas with the final goal being returning to Japan and visiting the Royal Palace in Tokyo. The game was probably printed in the 1960s when overseas travel by jet plane was regarded as a possible dream for many Japanese people. On the reverse is a fukuwarai happy-laughter game where a blind-folded player places eyes nose mouth and other pieces on the faces outlined. . No publication details. unknown

第一徴兵保険他. Daiichi Chōhei Hoken and others. Circa1940. Charming group of seven pieces of Japanese insurance ephemera. Each of the six brochures and one booklet 18 pages are very attractively presented with coloured covers colour and black and white illustrations charts sizes vary from 15.5 x 9.5cm to 18.2 x 12.7cm. Occasional light foxing all are in very good condition. This is a very interesting and attractive collection of ephemera published around 1940 relating to life insurance policies for Japanese families and children. Four of the brochures are insurance for conscription two relate to life insurance and one the 18 page booklet is on a family life insurance. Japanese life insurance policies for children were and are used as accumulative saving plans towards covering educational costs. Thus when a policy matures a lump sum is paid to a policy holder so that the money can be used for schooling. <br> <br>The conscription insurance was an unusual saving plan for Japanese boys before the Pacific War. All Japanese men were obliged to serve in the military and had to have physical assessment when they turned 20 years old. During peace time only about 10 to 25% of them were actually conscripted but during the Pacific War the rate became much higher. The insurance policy could set its maturity age either at 18 or 20. The lump sum payouts were to be used for military service preparation education or wedding. <br> <br>The 18 page brochure on the family insurance was published by Nagoya Postal Agency as the Ministry of Post and Communication ran saving banks and insurance policies. It provides comprehensive information on the rates of return and services provided for policy holders. <br> <br>Some insurance companies still running today including the Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Company whose brochure is in the collection had their origins in the conscription insurance business. . 第一徴兵保険他. Among them two people are holding a banner showing the name of the committee some of them are playing musical instruments and the majority of them are holding their hands high with the little red book of Mao's quotations. Mao Zedong's head and shoulder portrait the sun with its bold rays extending behind him. An image of Mao dominates the background the rays of the sun extending behind him. Banners with slogans carried by balloons float around Mao. A pagoda and the famous Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge are also featured. <br> <br>In very good condition blocks of text in Chinese papercut measures 47.3 x 71.7cm. On August 23rd 1965 during the meetings for organising The Third Plan of Five-year Plans of China 1966-1970 Premier Zhou Enlai concluded the important ideas raised by Mao Zedong to three crucial points "Be prepared against war; be prepared against natural disasters; and do everything for the people". Kyoto. 昭和拾八 1943. Japanese manuscript written in calligraphy issued by the influential Japanese Zen Buddhist temple Tōfuku-ji awarding a Japanese monk 花伯齊 the honourable title of 法橋Hokkyō. This title is the third highest rank is given to the Buddhist sculptors and is followed by the first and second ranks 法印 Hōin and 法眼 Hōgen. Certificate folded in original envelope two chops on corners some light foxing on sheet and envelope small holes on folds on envelope otherwise in good condition. Text in Japanese. 19.3 x 53.5 cm when folded sheet measures 38.5 x 53.5cm. The temple was built in 1236 on the instructions of Kujo Michiie but unfortunately has been destroyed by fire a number of times since then. . unknown

Two issues of Chinese language daily newspaper covering reports of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games published by Jiefang Daily Press on November 22nd 1956 issue no. 2710 and 23rd issue no. 2711 in Shanghai. Black and white illustrations each issue a single sheet printed on double sided folded complete. Small pin-holes along central folds with stain marks occasional tear on folds overall in very good condition. Text in Chinese language. Sheet measures 57 x 77.6cm. The Melbourne Olympic coverage is on Page 3 in both issues. Issue no. 2710 gives general information about soon to be opened ceremony in Melbourne with more than 60 countries and regions athletes' participating. It also forecasts the possible win of the Soviet Unions' basketball team. Issue no. 2711 explains that China had to withdraw from the Games because the Republic of China/Taiwan had been allowed to compete. Nations include Egypt Iraq Lebanon Netherlands Spain and Switzerland also pulled out of the Olympics. It states that Egypt Iraq and Lebanon's boycott is due to the Suez Crisis. However the article avoids mentioning that it was the Soviet Union's involvement in Hungarian Revolution which led to the boycott of the Games by three nations. The Australian Middle-distance runner John Landy took the Olympic Oath to mark the official opening of 1956 Summer Olympics. <br> <br>Jiefang Daily was first published in May 28th 1949 covering international domestic and Shanghai local news. These two issues feature Premier Zhou Enlai's state visit to Vietnam. It is the Party newspaper for the Shanghai Committee of the Communist Party of China. These two issues feature Premier Zhou Enlai's state visit to its communist neighbour Vietnam and the hot news of Israel's invasion in Egypt. [CHARMING COLOUR DIE CUT WITH A MESSAGE].

Kurabu Corporation. Very attractive small coloured die cut on card text in Japanese on rear10.2 x 5cm. Very good copy. Patriotic die cut advertisement produced by the Club corporation which produced toothpaste washing powder and later cosmetics. The image shows a map of parts of eastern China the Korean Peninsula and parts of western Japan surmounted by a girl brandishing a toothbrush and a boy with a Rising Sun flag planted in Qingdao China. It carries the words "Club Toothpaste" and "Famous Japanese Product" Nihon Meibutsu. The company was founded in Kobe in 1903 and adopted the trade name "Club" in 1905 and was known for its energetic marketing which involved the creation of a publishing company set up to produce magazines used to promote the company's products. Japan obtained control of Qingdao from Germany during the First World War and the city was returned to Chinese rule in 1922. This die cut seems to have been produced during that period. . No. 115 published on 1 February 1923 - Taisho 12. Some ocassional foxing to margins and covers. The original metal staples which were rusted have been removed and are now sewn with silk spines are a little worn with the odd chip but generally very good. Two issues of the journal "Rekishi Shashin" Historic Photographs- no. 112 Nov. 1922 and no. 115 February 1923. The journal was published from 1913 onwards by entrepreneur Akiyoshi Zentaro 1866-1924 and was one of Japan's first graphic magazines focusing on the use of photographic illustrations. The magazines which were aimed at a broad popular audience feature brightly coloured covers and traditional colour woodblock frontispieces followed by black-and-white photos illustrating a wide range of newsworthy topics including political events sports and popular culture. <br> <br>The eclectic contents give a wonderful insight into early 1920s Japanese popular culture. Collection of seven Cultural Revolution newspapers edited by various revolutionary committees mainly based in universities in Shanghai and Beijing published between 16 March 1967 and 20 January 1968. Each newspaper is 4 pages in length some browning and foxing and occasional tears mainly at folds and edges ink mark along middle fold on one newspaper generally good. Text in Chinese. Sheets measure approximately 38.5 x 53.9cm. The titles of the newspaper in this collection all contain the words 戰報 "war dispatches" showing the determination and fighting spirit from members of the revolution committees. Three pieces of newspaper in the collection are the issue no. 3 4 and 14 of 职教戰報 "War Dispatches of Staff Education". Issue no. 4 features a joint struggle session organised by seven Shanghai Red Guards' organisations on 29 March 1967. This struggle session was held with the aim of revealing the rotten capitalist revisionism in the education system. <br> <br>The other four "war dispatches" were published by different educational institutions in Shanghai and Beijing. One editorial attacks the rebellious nature of the intellectuals and targets the late Communist leader 瞿秋白 Qu Qiubai 1899 - 1935 as the enemy of revolution. Another featured article claims that in one of the leaders' meetings Deng Xiaoping tried to conceal 罗瑞卿 Luo Ruiqing's anti-revolution crimes.
