General Orders No. 184
Washington DC: War Department Adjutant General's Office 1863. 16mo. Self-cover. 8pp. Near fine. Binding traces at gutter not affecting text. This lengthy and fascinating General Order chronicles the Fort Snelling court martial trial of Captain James Starkey of the 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers charged with "Making false muster" "Willingly signing muster rolls containing false musters" "Making false return to his superior officer of the state of his Company" and "Conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman." Each charge is elaborated in great detail. Starkey was found guilty of most of the charges and sentenced "To be cashiered and to be forever disqualified from holding any office of trust or profit under the Government of the United States" -- this latter sentence commuted by President Lincoln who always believed in giving someone a second chance. General Orders were usually made in modest quantities for distribution to the various army commands where the company clerks would collect them hence the occasional file holes. Unusual gathering of three Wisconsin-related "General Orders" issued in 1862 1863 and 1864 all issued from the Adjutant General's Office at the War Department in Washington DC as follows: General Orders No. 217 30 December 1862 1p Notes three miscellaneous actions for three individual servicemen the last of which involves 2d Lieutenant Samuel B. Morse of the 7th Wisconsin Volunteers who resigned before the order dismissing him. General Orders No. 11 10 January 1863 1p dismissing Colonel R.C. Murphy of the 8th Wisconsin Volunteers from the Army "for allowing his command to be surprised at Holly Springs Mississippi without having taken proper steps to protect his post or repulse the enemy and his troops having been found in bed at the time of attack." General Orders No. 211 15 June 1864 1p text of a Congressional resolution "tendering the thanks of Congress to Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey of the 4th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. for distinguished services in the recent campaign on the Red River by which the gunboat flotilla under Rear Admiral David D. Porter was rescued from imminent peril." A long-time career officer Abert headed this bureau from 1834 until his 1861 retirement. "The Army and the country will not need to be reminded of the vast interest and value attached to the operations of this corps since its organization" Thomas reminds the reader. "The geographical and other information concerning this continent which its officers have collected and published has challenged the admiration of the scientific world." Pleaded "Not Guilty" and found "Guilty" Kessler was sentenced to "be hanged by the neck until he be dead." In this case President Lincoln approved the sentence. General Orders No. 211
Washington DC: War Department 1864 June 15. 12mo. Handbill. Near fine. Lightly soiled and a tad edgeworn with two file holes at left not affecting text. Townsend announces a "Public Resolution -- No. 34" being "A Resolution tendering the thanks of Congress to Lieutenant Joseph Bailey of the 4th Regiment of Wisconsin Volunteers. for distinguished services in the recent campaign on the Red river by which the gunboat flotilla under Rear Admiral David D. Porter was rescued from imminent peril." Bailey 1825-67 was one of only 15 men voted the "Thanks of Congress" -- and the only one who wasn't a corps or division commander. General Nathaniel Banks' Red River Campaign was saved from a disastrous loss of life by this Wisconsin engineer who devised a plan to raise the level of a river at Alexandria by constructing a winged dam. For ten days about 10000 soldiers slaved away to build it. The river did indeed raise and Admiral Porter's stranded fleet of ten gunboats floated safely past. Remnants of "Bailey's Dam" can still be seen today. An intriguing relic of this famed event. unknown

McClellan on November 8 -- though not stated just after losing the presidential race to Lincoln -- and the appointment of Philip H. Sheridan as Major General: "That for the personal gallantry military skill and just confidence in the courage and patriotism of his troops. on the 19th day of October at Cedar Run whereby. his routed army was reorganized a great national disaster averted and a brilliant victory achieved over the rebels for the third time in pitched battle within thirty days." The acceptance of McClellan's resignation without comment or praise over a job well done speaks volumes about the much-disliked commander's lackluster performance. unknown

Titled "Exchange of Prisoners of War" this General Order consists of Townsend's report of a prisoner exchange arranged between Generals William T. Sherman and John Bell Hood that took place in Rough and Ready Georgia on September 19 22 28 and 30 1864. "United States prisoners received -- 146 commissioned officers. 212 non-commissioned officers. 770 privates. In all equivalent to 2047 privates. Confederate prisoners received -- 128 commissioned officers. 225 non-commissioned officers. 979 privates. In all equivalent to 2045 privates." How these numbers add up to 2047 and 2045 privates is beyond us -- must be the Old Math. Accompanied by a fine modern circa 1960 glossy 8" X 10" photograph a superbly done reprint of the well-known head-and-shoulders portrait of John Bell Hood in Confederate uniform. Bookplate of Everett Paine a founding member of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Marblehead Massachusetts which was founded in 1888. Booksellers pencilled notation on blank page. Volume 1 has 957 pages. Last several pages have a small tear in margin. Several wrinkled pages. Profusely illustrated with black and white engravings. Volume 2 continues pagination at 958 and ends with 2189 pages. We noted some small staining at the pastedown on volume 2. All pages are heavy glossy stock and there is no foxing. The quality of the engravings is superb. The leather binding particularly to spine and corners is worn and appears somewhat fragile. A variety of bylined authors have written a history of each community in Essex County Massachusetts and biographical profiles of prominent men are accompanied by their portrait engravings. All are in original coloured pictorial wrappers profusely illustrated throughout in black and white with some colour photographic illustrations usually 40pp. Number 12 features a fold out pictorial plate. Text in English except for Language Corner 30.5 x 23cm. Some occasional wear to wrapper spines and slight soiling at opening edges. One leaf from Number 8 pp 31/32 is missing. Spine of Number 10 has washi paper minor repair otherwise in very good condition. This influential magazine was established by Soong Ching-ling in 1949. This German Luftwaffe fighter ace was the last group commander of the 2nd Jagdgeschwader II./JG2 and a Knight's Cross recipient downing 47 enemy aircraft many of them over the English Channel and in North Africa. ALS 1p 8¼" X 11" Bayreuth Germany 1 August 1997. Addressed to Gerry D. Fridlund. Fine. On lined stock Karch pens an American admirer in black ballpoint entirely in German. He notes that many of his things were destroyed in a bombing attack just before the end of World War Two and he lost all of his photographs from 1944 and 1945 and therefore can't fulfill his request for an image from this period; he encloses a photograph from October 1943 showing him conversing with officers from his unit at their air base in Normandy. Boldly signed. The photograph is included being a modern high quality print 3½" X 5". On the blank lower margin Karch signs boldly. Also present is the original mailing envelope addressed in Karch's hand and signed by him again on the verso along with his home address. unknown

Typed Letter Signed
This Knight's Cross recipient was a Luftwaffe ace who scored all of his victories on the Western Front -- 54 downed enemy aircraft in more than 250 combat missions. TLS in German heavy stock 8¼" X 5 3/4" Munster Germany 24 September 1997. Addressed to M.K. Schmidt. Near fine. On a correspondence card the right side of which bears a 3½" X 5" reproduction of a well-known WW2-era head-and-shoulders portrait of Meimberg in uniform wearing his Knight's Cross Meimberg writes to an American admirer. Below his portrait on the right side Meimberg signs boldly in blue ink. With original envelope. Though a small format letter accomplished later in life the content is exceptional and being typed alongside a likeness of Meimberg in his prime the presentation is superb. Meimberg offers "reminiscences about a time that lay more than a half century behind us." He mentions musing about fallen comrades offers some serious thoughts about his thinking as group commander of the II Jagdeschwader 53 Pik-As group when he was 27 years old "At the time it was clear to me that the war for Germany was lost. I hoped for a political solution." and remarks how he knows today that war is always the result of failed politics. He bemoans the fate of his generation but is pleased that a war among European nations is unthinkable today and that other peoples might learn from their history. English writer best known as an influential historian of Roman Catholicism in America on which topic he penned 27 volumes; also a poet and literary critic. Two items: First an ALS 1p 5" X 8" San Rafael CA 1923 March 11. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. Cordial note to an admirer: "I generally destroy published mss. but I do nothing systematically & a little search has brought this to light. You will find it among the Epitaphs in my book 'The Last Knight. This is the original and I fear illegible draft. I am not an American except by residence." Boldly signed with an initialed postscript. Second the aforementioned draft an AMS 1p 3½" X 8¼" n.p. n.y. Very good. On cheap lightly but evenly age toned stock Maynard pens quite a few lines in his incredibly miniscule script many of his letters are a mere 1/8th" tall many 1/16ths" tall. Titled "Epitaphs" the first example goes "of a philanthropist who after a long & useful life was impartially praised even by those newspapers which he did not own." Some deletions additions and corrections throughout. Signed 1¼" long at the conclusion. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown

Friendly letter to an American admirer in blue ballpoint thanking her and transmitting a signed photograph -- which is present 3½" X 5" a modern reproduction of a WW2-era black and white snapshot of a jaunty smiling Kaiser standing in uniform with hands on hips. Signed Commemorative Envelope
Brown was an American ace who downed six enemy aircraft in 57 missions in his P-51 Mustang; Knoke was a Knight's Cross recipient a German Luftwaffe ace who in more than 2000 missions claimed 33 downed aircraft and another 19 unconfirmed kills penning the 1953 Luftwaffe classic "I Flew for the Fuhrer." Signed Commemorative Envelope 6½" X 4¼" cancelled on the 60th anniversary of the Royal Air Force's 207 Squadron on 15 November 1976. Fine. Left half consists of a pictorial color cachet showing "Lancasters of No. 207 Squadron Northern France 1944" and inset portrait of "Marshall of the Royal Air Force the Lord Tedder of Glenguin" with text at right detailing the flight on which this envelope was flown which two of the crew have signed. Special postal cancellation. At top center Knoke signs boldly in black fineline. Beneath this Brown signs in red fineline adding "Lt. Col. USAF Ret / 20th F.G. 55th F.S. / King's Cliffe England." LAWLEY, William R (1920-99)

This officer with the USAAF's 364th Bomb Squadron was flying his B-17 Flying Fortress over Nazi-controlled Europe when it was attacked and disabled whereupon he ordered his crew to parachute to safety while he managed to fly the craft with two crew too injured to parachute to a crash landing in friendly territory -- for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Heavy stock printed "Medal of Honor Recipient" card 6" X 4" with his printed full name and rank and the date of his heroic act "Over Europe / February 20 1944". Above his name Lawley signs large and bold in pencil. Fine. This attractive card is accompanied by a heavy stock 8½" X 13½" unsigned reproduction of aviation artist J.G. Keck's head-and-shoulders portrait of a young Lawley in uniform. Fine. A superb pair. unknown

1852-1858 Detailed Ledger of Pioneering Big Island Marion Ohio Physician with Endless References to Marions Early Settlers
Big Island Marion Ohio Usa United States. Fair with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is the remarkable medical ledger and diary of one of Marion Ohios pioneering physicians Dr. Russell Clark R. C. Bowdish 1823-1913. Dr. Bowdish was born to Elijah and Sarah Russell Bowdish. In 1907 a book on the History of Marion County was published which referred to Bowdish as the only surviving pioneer physician Jacoby 1907. Bowdish was one of the first students who attended Marion Academy before studying medicine under Dr. John C. Norton and Dr. T. B. Fisher. He graduated from Cleveland Medical College in 1844. He first practiced in Waldo before moving to Big Island in 1851 where he practiced medicine until his retirement in 1889. Dr. Bowdish married Irene Hardin 1829-1876 in Delaware Ohio in 1848. They had two children both of whom sadly died in childhood. Late in life Dr. Bowdish married Margaret Emma Wheatley 1840-1921 in 1885. The diary is as interesting for its hundreds of references to pioneers of Marion County as it is for its collection of information about medical treatments and costs of the time. It is also interesting to see how Dr. Bowdish traveled for his work and when what his typical calls were usually medication requests and visits to wives who are in confinement but some other neat moments such as attending a protracted labour are noted how much health care cost and who received it regularly vs sporadically in the region.
