‎Closing Arguments of Hon. Harry Bingham Before the Railroad Committee of The New Hampshire Legislature Wednesday August 10 1887‎

‎Concord New Hampshire: N.H. Democratic Press Company 1887. In favor the "Atherton Bill" and in Opposition to the "Hazan Bill" Rare unique volume. Harry Bingham 1821-1900 was a lawyer and a long-serving member of the New Hampshire legislature where he was known a talented debater. Many of his speeches including this one were published and this volume is among his better known speeches. Bingham was also the chief counsel for the Concord New Hampshire Railroad System. The book is an 8vo size clothbound hardcover with leather spine. Leather spine extends about an inch over black cloth. 26 numbered toned pages followed by large section of blank pages. Speckled finish on outside pages. Exterior spine badly chipped and a small piece is tucked inside cover. Our 8th photo shows where that remnant fits. Bumped top corners. Two inch split to rear hinge - see last photo. Ex-library with two paste-in labels and minimal markings. This book circulated only once in 1908. Penciled price on fep. . Quarter Leather. Tanned spine small spot near bottom of exterior spine; light crease on spine bumped bottom of spine and small spot on bottom of book. Black slipcase has wear and chipping. Volumes III and IV: ends with page 2650. Tanned spine. The bottom panel of this slipcase is damaged. Volumes V & VI: ends with page 3975. Back hinge cracked; spot on back cover and tanned spine. Page 3661/3662 was properly cut but the publisher and overhangs. Page 3663/3664 has a tiny ink spot or publisher's blemish. The slipcases are worn and friable and shed tiny black pieces. ‎Boston: Gould and Lincoln 1856. Edited by the son of the diarist this is a collection of the writings of Amos Lawrence 1786-1852. Amos and is brothers were very successful early American merchants. The city of Lawrence Massachusetts was named for his brother Abbott Lawrence. Following his retirement Amos Lawrence was a philanthropist on a tremendous scale donating to education libraries and healthcare in particular. Not to be confused with his son Amos A. Lawrence himself a businessman and philanthropist and also a leading abolitionist and the founder of Lawrence Kansas. This family figures prominently in early American genealogy and history. 359 tanned pages followed by index. Engraved frontispiece of Amos Lawrence with facsimile signature plus engraving of his brother Abbott. Another page is a facsimle of Amos Lawrence's handwriting. Both black and white illustrations are on heavy glossy stock. Beautiful embossed scroll work on front and back cover and spine. From Preface: "Among the papers of the late Amos Lawrence were found copies of a large number of letters addressed to his children. With the hope that the good counsels there given during a succession of years extending from their childhood to adult age might still be made profitable to their descendants he had caused them to be carefully preserved. This present volume containing what was thought most interesting among those letters and extracts" had 100 copies privately printed. Organizations to which Lawrence had contributed urged its publication and the book reproduces some of those letters. This edition contains some additional material not in the private press edition. Many photographs and drawings illustrate a snapshot in time of a bygone landscape now "re-developed" away. After his early retirement as a Congregational minister due to ill health Wallace Nutting began taking landscape photographs. His photography business was incredibly successful selling more than 10 million prints. Nutting was also an artist you can see his work within this volume who authored several books about beautiful landscapes in New England and abroad. His photographs many hand colored remain highly collectible. Dust jacket is slightly sunned with significant edgewear and moderate chipping about the top and bottom of jacket. The original copyright date doesn't change but the publication date might particular in a 100 year old popular children's book. We see other seller's with the same book claiming to have a first edition. Caveat emptor. 8vo size gray clothbound pictorial hardcover with illustrated cover and spine. 323 toned pages. This is a volume in the Young Puritans series of historical fiction based on the author's family history. Author: Mary Prudence Wells Smith 1840 - 1930 was an author including of four different children's series. Some biographers also call her an early feminist. This volume is one of the Young Puritan's Series of children's historical fiction which was based on local history including the experiences of some of her own family members in the Deerfield Massachusetts area. Both Wells Smith's mother and father had Puritan ancestry with their antecedents arriving in Massachusetts in the 1630s. As a child Wells Smith was particularly interested in her father's stories of kidnappings perpetrated by Indians Native Americans. Wells Smith was educated beyond the standard of women of her era - meaning she completed high school and received a post secondary education. While she dabbled in writing early in her career she is noted for having been the first woman employed by a Massachusetts bank. Wells Smith left the bank after eight years of employment when they refused to pay her an equal salary to her male colleagues. She also wrote under the nom de plume P. Thorne. take her from bank to books. Illustrator: Jessie Willcox Smith 1863 - 1935 was a preeminent American illustrator. Like Norman Rockwell Smith was one of the highest paid illustrators of that time which was referred to as the Golden Age of Illustration. Smith illustrated more than 60 books. She created all of the covers for Good Housekeeping magazine from 1915 to 1933. The Mother Goose series of illustrations for Good Housekeeping that she did was published as The Jessie Willcox Smith Mother Goose in 1914. A contributor to numerous other magazines Smith also illustrated advertisements posters and calendars. Smith was the winner of numerous awards during her lifetime including a Silver Medal at the Panama-Pacific Exposition. She was elected posthumously to the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1992. Smith's work appears in many museum collections and her papers are - where else - at the Smithsonian. The author and illustrator are not related. Name and inscription dated 1913 and booksellers markings on fep. Bumped and worn head and heel of spine and corners. There is a stain on the top of the book that is visible in the top center margin of some pages. We noted fingermarks in the margins of at least four pages and some light spots to title pages a quarter inch tear to the bottom margin of one page and there is a light stain or foxing to the blank reverse of one of the illustration pages and its facing page. Please note: the majority of the text in this volume is in German. Page 114 has a fingermark in the margin page 115 has penciled notations. There is a name etc written on inside front cover not well blotted with resultant transfer to fep; there are losses to the top and bottom of front pastedown which may be past insect activity. The back pastedown is firmly intact. There is some tanning or discoloration to inside covers and endpapers. The bottom tips of the last two pages are curled. Black and white photographs throughout with color photo illustrated endpapers and several color pages. Yearbooks are always a fascinating snapshot in time memorializing hairstyles fashion and social conventions. This book is very well photographed with some interesting and thoughtful compositions. Founded in 1848 the oft renamed school began: in 1848 as the Masonic University of Tennessee in 1850 was renamed Stewart College in 1850 to honor its then president William M. Stewart in 1875 was renamed Southwestern Presbyterian University in 1925 was renamed Southwestern in 1945 was renamed Southwestern at Memphis which was its name at the time of publication of this volume and in 1984 was renamed Rhodes College in after Dr. Payton N. Rhodes who served as president of the college and prior to that professor. Now known as Rhodes College the school is a private liberal arts college. Its sports teams play in the NCAA Division III Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The team name Lynx. The school is known also for its stone Gothic architecture; 13 of the school's buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places and it also has an arboretum with more than 1000 trees. What famous people have a connection to Southwestern at Memphis Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas who served from 1965-1969 was a 1930 graduate. Actress Dixie Carter attended college here. Author Robert Penn Warren was a professor. Lt. General Claudia Kennedy U.S. Army retired the first female 3-star general and Kappa Delta member is a 1969 graduate none of whom are in this book. Edgewear bumped bottom front and top back corners and light wear to corners bumped and worn head and heel of spine. Name written on title page. ‎New York: The University of the State of New York State Museum 1916. Reading copy with much wear and tear. Full page color plates by L.A. Fuertes. Marginalia lovers dream. It appears that the owner of this book used it to document in almost diary form throughout book what appears to be more than 20 years of bird watching from 1931 to 1953 with dated notes throughout: on blank pages reverso of plates etc even laid in sheets. Book has numerous flaws with serious wear and tear to cloth covers. Cloth is peeling from front boards and there is a split the length of front spine. Shaken. Multiple sheets laid in front of book were cello taped and are now loose and the cello tape has left a dark stain. There is evidence on about six pages in front of insect or rodent nibbling on bottom corner these are actually laid in lone pages not pages from the actual book. The color plates are bright but some have fingermarks or light foxed spots at least one page has ink transfer from the previous page. There are some plates with notes or marginalia on reverse. Cloth.
