This pamphlet reports on the demonstration of the machine given to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1849. Ink notations on p. 3 correct the description of the levers indicating Yea and Nay votes. In this opinion he argues that the city of Philadelphia did not have the authority to extend the railroad over the Schuylkill River on the existing Market Street bridge. The city nevertheless used the existing Permanent Bridge to bring the railroad across the river to the city. Very scarce. This is the program for the Nov. 19 1924 performance of Anna Pavlova spelled Pavlowa with Laurent Novikoff Alexandre Volinine Hilda Butsova and others. They performed Don Quixote Novikoff/Minkus with Pavlova dancing Kitry and Dulcinea and seven Divertissements including Pavlova in her most famous role the Swan Fokine/Saint-Saens. The program includes many advertisements for Philadelphia businesses some of them illustrated. The advertisements include: a Thanksgiving performance at the Academy of Music by Paul Whiteman and his orchestra with a photograph of the orchestra; and competing dance studios led by two former Denishawn dancers Jerrie Meyer and Sara D. Ferris. Also contains an article by the composer and Chautauqua performer Clay Smith about the origin of the word "jazz" tracing it back to western mining town honkytonks where he played 30 years earlier a version of this article appeared in Etude magazine in 1924. Published anonymously but attributed to the defendant Charles Cornwallis 3rd Baron Conwallis 1655-1698 who was tried for murder. He and another man Charles Gerrard while drunk and disorderly in the middle of the night threatened a sentinel who was able to defend himself and then two young men who were passing by. Gerrard attacked one of the young men breaking his neck and killing him. Cornwallis was found not guilty of murder although six of his peers found him guilty of manslaughter. Written inside front cover: "Reproduction of drawings accampanyinng proposal of Henry R. Worthington Chicago Nov 14th /96." Henry Rossiter Worthington 1817-1880 was an American mechanical engineer who patented the duplex steam pump in 1859 and was a founder of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1880. He established the Henry R. Worthington Pump Works in 1845 in Brooklyn. The Henry R. Worthington Co. was established in 1893 in New Jersey to continue the manufacturing of steam pumps and pump engines. This propoal submitted to the city of Chicago includes drawings of the Worthington vertical triple expansion high duty pumping engine as well as of Worthington pumps made for the water works in Providence St. Louis Brooklyn Nashville Memphis and Peoria. Original front wrapper bound in with "369" handwritten in upper right-hand corner. The entire text was lithographed from a hand-written document. No date of publication is given. Name from end of text has been transcribed as M. A. Kouknoff and Alexandre Kukhnov. More likely H. Kaukhnoff. Library records give dates from 1925 to 1929 as the year of publication. This very scarce catalog of the marks of Russian porcelain factories includes brief histories of the factories as well as drawings of the factory marks. Title pages state sold by Mathew Carey in Philadelphia and a variety of other booksellers in other cities in the United States. Small oval paper label in first compartment of each volume with very faint handwritten number. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper of each volume indicating that the volumes were given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1851 by Mrs. Judge Reed Carlisle Pa. No other library markings. Vol. 1 contains as bound: issues of Jan. 1809 and Jan. and Feb. 1810 with no volume title page. Vol. 2 contains as bound vol. 2 title page table of contents index and: April July Sept. Oct. Nov. and Dec. 1809. Vol. 3 contains title page table of contents and index for vol. 3 and: July Aug. Sept. Oct. Nov. and Dec. 1810. Only volumes 1-8 were published from 1809 to 1812. The printer Enos Bronson 1774-1823 published the Gazette of the United States from 1801 to 1804; with Elihu Chauncey he published The United States' Gazette for the Country from 1804 to 1818. Select Reviews consisted primarily of reviews of recently published material taken from other publications. It also contained some original material including an obituary of Miriam Gratz poetry and advertisements for American and British publishers. In Very Good Condition: leather is rubbed; 6.5-cm. tear from fore-edge of vol. 2 title page with loss at fore-edge not impacting printing; faint dampstain on a few pages of vol.1; ink stain extending through about 30 pages of vol. 2; occasional foxing; solid copy of this scarce publication. Sixteen "Platinogram" Views of London Robey's Series
London: T.F. Robey 1890. Very Good. 16 black-and-white collotype views loose as issued in a light green envelope. Title from envelope. "Robey's Series" -- on envelope and on each image. Thomas F. Robey was a photographer active in London beginning in the 1890s. From about 1894 to about 1905 he was also active as a commercial photographer and printer with Eustace Curzon. They were among many photographers producing platinotypes or platinum prints around the turn of the century. "Platinogram" was the name given by Robey to these images made from platinotypes. As listed on the envelope the views are: The Tower Bridge Tower of London London Bridge Royal Exchange St. Paul's West Front Embankment Houses of Parliament Westminster Abbey Rotten Row Piccadilly Circus Albert Hall Albert Memorial Crystal Palace Trafalgar Square Ludgate Circus and the Great Wheel. There is no date of publication but the images appear to be from the 1890s. The detail in the street scenes is particularly impressive. There are no motorized vehicles in any of the scenes. Oval stationers label on front of envelope: Rowsell & Son Cheapside. In Very Good Condition: minor creasing at a few corners; loss of corners on two images; clean and bright. Envelope is in Good- Condition: separated into two sections; chipping along edges; minor loss at corners. Extremely scarce -- no other copies of these "Platinogram" views have been located. T.F.
