One of the last of the singing cowboys known as "Mister Cowboy" and "The Arizona Cowboy" Allen starred in cowboy films of the 1950s and is credited with composing 300 songs among them "Crying in the Chapel" 1953. IDS 8" X 10" n.p. n.y. ca. 1960. Near fine. Original pencil sketch by an unknown artist a nicely executed head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling Allen with a bandana around his neck with "Rex Allen / 'The Arizona Cowboy'" pencilled beneath. The Soldiers' Friend" so called because of his advocacy of Civil War veterans and their needs was a merchant and Democrat turned Republican politician who served New York as representative 1853-55 1857-65 governor 1865-68 and senator 1869-75. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 5 3/4" X 9½" engraved by H.B. Hall of New York. Near fine. Titled "Eminent Upholders in Congress of the War for the Union" in ornate rolling typeface along the lower margin this depicts twelve notable Congressman head-and-shoulders portrait each within a small oval. Though not dated this would have been a free-franking signature clipped from a type of envelope commonly used by Congressman and dates to Yates' Senate period. Buttre of New York and captioned "Eminent Loyal Governors" in ornate flowing typeface along the lower margin. This German-born Union general was a man of vast accomplishments: U.S. minister to Spain senator from Missouri secretary of the interior editor of the "New York Evening Post" and more. Bold strong signature typical "C. Schurz" 2½" X 1¼" slip n.p. Very good. Mild age toning with paper clip rust mark at upper left touching upon the "C." An appealing war-date example of this extraordinary figure's signature with "Maj Genl." penned beneath it and another rather illegible line bpenned beneath that may read "Dec. 23d 1863". Schurz was raised to the rank of major general in March 1863 which would make this possible 1863 date logical. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Defenders of the Union" along the bottom heavy stock 6" X 9" n.p. n.y. Twelve superb individual portraits each within its own oval decorative frame with Rosecrans at upper center and Sigel Weitzel Meagher and other Union generals surrounding him -- Schurz at upper right. Signed Commemorative Envelope
Gleave was a famed R.A.F. fighter pilot shot down during the Battle of Britain and horribly burned -- which in turn made him famous as "Chief Guinea Pig" to famed New Zealand pioneering plastic surgeon Sir Archibald McIndoe; Simpson was a R.A.F. bomber pilot shot down over Belgium in 1940 suffering severe facial and hand burns -- and he too became famous as another of McIndoe's "guinea pigs." Signed Commemorative Envelope 7½" X 4½" n.p. cancelled on 20 July 1982. Fine. Left half is filled with a color cachet depicting Battle of Britain fighters above which is a portrait of Archibald McIndoe and the caption "41st Anniversary of the Guinea Pig Club 20 July 1982" with explanatory text at right describing the commemorative flight on which this envelope was carried. At upper right near the special circular Guinea Pig Club cancellation Gleave and Simpson each sign in blue ballpoint. Limitation statement on envelope verso notes this is #361 of 1026 signed covers and is signed by R.A.F. Project Officer D. Fullock. This American author photographer cinematographer and producer co-founded the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the Whitney Museum of Western Art; as an explorer he led a group that attempted to prove a land bridge once existed between Alaska and Siberia; his numerous books include "Beyond the Frozen Frontier" 1936 and many titles about cowboys big game hunting and artists of the American West. TNS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1940 October 4. Addressed to Arnold Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On letterhead of "Courier Productions" a documentary film production company he founded McCracken tells an admirer he "deeply appreciated your very pleasant remembrance of my birthday as well as the nice things said about 'Beyond the Frozen Frontier'. Although I have no immediate plans for another book I have been flirting with a couple of ideas which may materialize." Signed Commemorative Postal Cover
American career balloonist with many "firsts" to his name; in 1978 he Ben Abruzzo and Larry Newman piloted the Double Eagle II in the first Transatlantic balloon crossing departing Maine on August 11 and landing in France six days later -- for which they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1979. Signed commemorative postal cover honoring this achievement 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Albuquerque New Mexico on April 20 1979. Envelope bears the 13-cent "French Alliance 1778" stamp and 4-cent "A Public That Reads" stamp and a special postal cancellation featuring an image of the Double Eagle balloon and the caption "Double Eagle II / First Transatlantic Balloon Flight." No decorative printed cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Anderson signs boldly in black fineline near the center. Also present is a small portion of the original mailing envelope used to transmit this cover cancelled in Albuquerque July 18 1979. An Albuquerque philatelic connection is relevant for the Double Eagle II crew were among those who established this town as the ballooning capital of the world. Anderson died in a balloon crash in Germany making his a rather scarce signature. unknown

This wealthy clothing merchant made a name for himself as mayor of New York when during the infamous Draft Riots of 1863 he refused to waver in his support of the draft. Partly-printed DS 1p 8" X 3 3/4" New York NY 1863 November 9. Very good. Cancellation slashes lightly touch one letter of signature. City check printed in blue and drawn on the Broadway Bank from the "Election Expenses" account paying $125 to Terence M. Lynch for voter registration services rendered. Large and ornate with a nautical theme vignette featuring a sailor and a Native American maiden. Signed boldly in brown ink by Opdyke as mayor Matthew T. Brennan as Comptroller and F.B. This South African dentist was the recipient of the world's first successful heart transplant performed by Christian Baarnard in 1968 which made him front-page news worldwide. Signed greeting card 4" X 6½" n.p. 1968. Fine. Bleiberg received numerous get-well cards from well-wishers after the operation which he usually signed by way of acknowledgment and returned. Front panel depicts a bird-hunting dog posing and a bird in flight above with the printed caption "The Best to You on your Birthday." Inside panel bears similar birthday wishes and below this the sender has inked "Dr. Philip Blaiberg sic / from -- / Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Collett / Mbld. 1968." Bleiberg's scrawled sickly-looking signature in blue ballpoint appears on the verso. Unusual. unknown

This pioneering Canadian illustrator and author appeared in "St. Nicholas Magazine" often where his "Brownies" often appeared; they debuted in book form in "The Brownies Their Book" in 1887 appearing in a dozen volumes with titles such as "The Brownies Abroad" and "The Brownies Around the World." Delightful ink sketch of a typical brownie head-and-shoulders portrait within a 3/4" diameter circle in black ink at upper left of a heavy stock 3½" X 2" card and Cox's large handsome signature in brown ink at center. Fine. Accompanied by a 7" X 9" glossy book portrait of Cox with facsimile signature and "Yours in Brownieland" inscription below a leaf from the June 1894 "Book News Portraits" No. 97 Volume 12. McCUTCHEON, John T (1870-1949)
Signed Ink Drawing
Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 18" n.p. 1929. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear and mild soiling. Labeled "Putting their Sincerity to the Test" by McCutcheon along the lower margin this single-panel cartoon depicts President Herbert Hoover full length front and center and facing right wonderfully executed as he stands in front of a circular table. With his arms he presents a large scroll laid out on this table which reads in full: "Proper defense requires military strength relative to that of other nations. We will reduce our strength in proportion to any other. It remains for the others to say how low they will go. It cannot be too low for us. Hoover's Armistic Day address." Hoover is saying "There! Now let's see if you're really sincere in wanting to give your tax payers some relief from their armament burdens." Behind Hoover at the left of the drawing a sketchy figure of a worried-looking Uncle Sam sits astride huge sacks of money labeled "U.S. Resources." In front of Hoover at the right of the drawing stand six attentive listeners: A portly "Britain" in Edwardian getup sports a Union Jack vest while alongside him a shadowy figure is hunched by the huge sack he hoists labeled "British Armament Burden on the Tax Payer"; "France" in military uniform scratches his bewhiskered chin while a similar hunched figure strains under a sack labeled "French Naval Burden on the Tax Payers"; behind these figures stand "Japan" in military uniform a "Japanese Burden" sack just visible at his side and "Italy" in military uniform sack at his side. On November 11 1929 Hoover had expressed these Armistice Day sentiments in a speech given before the Annual Convention of the Mississippi Valley Association. This drawing which McCutcheon dates "Nov. 13" at lower left is a superb and provocative example of McCutcheon's ability to humanize political concepts to make abstract notions concrete. And artistically this rendering of Hoover is among his very best. Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. unknown

SCHARY, Dore (1905-80)
Autograph Note Signed
This American screenwriter director producer and playwright co-authored the screenplay for "Boys Town" winning an Academy Award for Best Writing; in 1948 he became chief of production at MGM Studios ascending to the presidency in 1951 with the departure of Louis B. Mayer filling that office until 1956; among his plays are the Tony Award-winning "Sunrise at Campobello" for which he also wrote the screenplay. ANS 1p 7¼" X 10½" n.p. n.y. 1966. Fine. Near the bottom of a one sentence typed note dated 6 April 1966 sent him by noted Lincoln Scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 on letterhead of "The Civil War Round Table of New York" Schary pens a bold reply in blue ballpoint. Gates had asked Schary "If you can make this one I would be very pleased to have you attend as my guest" referring no doubt to a Civil War Round Table guest lecture -- to which Schary replied "Dear Mr. Gates -- I would have enjoyed being there -- by some breakdown of U.S. Postal Service -- your invitation reached me on the 20th of April -- Perhaps next time -- Thanks -- Dore Schary." Most unusual in this form! Schary produced the 1955 documentary "The Battle of Gettysburg" hence his proven interest in the topic. unknown
