Mimeographed double-spaced text of the powerful senator's speech titled "Abraham Lincoln" and given before the Alexander Hamilton Club of Baltimore on February 12 1940. Precisely the type of platitudes you would expect an old-time politico to express on Lincoln's birthday mixed with sharp criticism of FDR and his policies. Signed large and bold by Capper in blue fountain pen across the top of the first page. Accompanied by a superb and scarce 6½" X 8½" glossy news agency photograph of 1947 depicting the senior senator seated at his desk on Capital Hill reading copies of two newspapers which he founded "The Topeka Daily Capital" and "Capper's Weekly". Cryptic note in response to a request: "Though I have been asked many times to answer questions somewhat similar to yours I have never answered one of them. You are however quite welcome to make what use you may think proper of the enclosed." An attractive example. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Moscow: N.p. 1892. Plate XII from a set of twenty loose black and white prints originally sold as a set in a portfolio printed in Moscow in 1892. This untitled set of large high quality photographic prints each measures 25" X 18" commemorates some unidentified imperial autograph collection with each print picturing a montage of autographs in specific collecting fields. Subject matters represented include many of the classic areas of autograph collecting: scientists several different artists musicians actors opera performers ballet stars writers and poets statesmen and more. While the signed photographs usually cartes-de-visite letters and other documents depicted in each montage are international in scope there tend to be more Russian go figure! and French persons. "Ballet et Opera" is a quaint heavy stock print consists of a montage showing nine cartes-de-visite or cabinet size photographs six of them signed one with a signed card and two alongside Autograph Notes Signed of Virginia Zucchi Sigrid Arnoldson Libia Drog Deycha-Sionitzky Leopoldine Loscher Marie Petipa Luigia Cerale Eugenie Mravine and Lydie Heiten. Most are head and shoulders portraits in opulent Victorian garb and headgear; full-length shots in tutus were not mandatory and are present only on Loscher and Cerale. These images are casually splayed out atop what might be an artist's rendering of a ballet stage scene with putti a lyre draped florals etc. Very good. Minor soiling. Most attractive and with large untrimmed margins.These pre-revolutionary prints from the heyday of the czars -- all in handsome clean condition -- are seldom encountered in this country and come direct from our contact. Grandson of inventor Robert McCormick nephew of reaper inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick father of editors Joseph Medill McCormick and "Colonel" Robert R. McCormick -- this career diplomat joined the State Department in 1887 serving as U.S. ambassador to Austria-Hungary 1902 Russia 1902-05 and France 1905-07 although according to one journalist McCormick's "career as a dilettante diplomat took a backseat to his more serious pursuit of alcohol." Autograph Fragment unsigned on printed calling card heavy stock 3" X 1½" London England n.y. Near fine. Handsome italic "Mr. Robert McCormick" printed at center and beneath this McCormick has penned in brown ink in his small neat hand "Hotel Belgravia / Victoria Street S.W." Likely dates from early in his State Department career else a title such as "Ambassador" would have preceded his name. The card bears a heavy printed black border or "mourning rule" but since it's difficult to assign a date to this it's also difficult to determine what death in his family would have occasioned the mourning border. The Victoria Street area of southwest London is appropriate as it was chock full of foreign embassies and McCormick must have been on some State Department assignment there. Not signed alas but a most unusual item nevertheless. unknown

Depicted are Pauline Lucca G. Fedotoff Eleonora Duse P. Strepetoff N. Wassilieff M. Slavine Marcella Zembrich-Stengel N. Nikouline Alma Fohstrom and Medea Figuener. Duse's is the largest image and takes center stage. All have been artfully arranged hodgepodge-style atop a background of a watercolor scene featuring an eclectic combination of flowers a putti a Greek stage mask a lyre a stage fan etc. Very good. Minor soiling and several small and discreet edge tears that would easily mat out. Overall quite handsome and striking with large untrimmed margins. Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 16" n.p. n.y. probably 1918. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear. Fun and handsome two-panel cartoon titled "Reciprocity" along the bottom in McCutcheon's hand with two subtitles. The top panel is titled "They've been giving you a lot to cheer about." It was first titled "They are giving you something to cheer about now" but McCutcheon altered some of the language in pencil. This depicts a group of prancing cheering men hats flung up in the air and behind them a bulletin board with the announcement "War Bulletin / Allies / Investing / St. Quentin." The Germans had attacked this French city in March 1918 just before large numbers of American troops reached the front. The lower panel is titled "Next week it will be your turn to give them something to cheer about." As wi the previous caption McCutcheon altered the original -- which read "You must give them something to cheer about next week" -- in pencil. Here another group of men -- this time all soldiers -- prace and cheer with various helmets tossed up in the air. Behind them to the left a bulletin board reads "Important! / Americans / Investing in / Liberty Bonds" while to the right appear blackened ruins. Signed simply "McCutcheon" as usual. unknown

Governor of Wisconsin 1882-89 who in quelling strike riots coined the phrase "I seen my duty and I done it"; secretary of agriculture 1889-93. TLS 2pp 8" X 10" Department of Agriculture letterhead Washington DC 1889 November 18. Addressed to Col. Henry Casson. Very good. Minor darkening at bottom edge. Pale blue letterhead. Concerns Wisconsin political matters reading in part: "I differ with you very much in regard to the Bennett law. The principle contained in it is nothing more than the principle of the prohibition party in Wisconsin. Flecker's defense of the law or any Democrat's defense will have the same effect upon the party that it would have if Hastings should go out and defend the republican ticket -- drive away republicans instead of assisting to hold them. The first time I get a chance to make a public utterance in Wisconsin I shall denounce the law and put myself right with my German friends. The fact that the Catholic Democrats are patting the law on the back is enough to condemn it without anything further. I say this much to you so you may know where your old chief stands." This "Chicago Times" sports cartoonist hit the big time with his 1932 creation "Grin and Bear It" which became nationally syndicated and kept him at the drawing board until 1974. Signed print 5¼" X 6½" n.p. n.d. Near fine. Interesting glossy "slick" in printer's parlance of a daily "Grin and Bear It" installment: Three road workers with a pickup truck full of "Historical Site" plaques -- one holds a plaque and points enquiringly at a spot in the dirt while another barks out "No need to be too accurate about where you put them men. there's always arguments about those things anyway!." The artist boldly inscribed is above their image: "TO / WARREN / REEDER / my best / Lichty." Reeder was a well-known Indiana realtor autograph collector and author of the 1972 book "No Performances Today: An Account of the Events Leading Up to and Following the Train Wreck of the Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Train". Unusual form a "slick" being an in-house production proof copy this one bearing two registration marks at the left margin. unknown

This Slovakian immigrant was elected a Democratic representative to Congress from Chicago in 1907 and on April 1 1934 became the "Dean of the House" longest-serving member a post he held for 18 years 7 months and 5 days -- the longest anyone has held that post. TLS 1p 8" X 10½" Washington DC 1939 August 5. Addressed to Gerald Salters. Near fine. On "House of Representatives U.S." letterhead Sabath as chairman of the Committee on Rules attempts to appease an angry constituent regarding "the 30 day furlough of W.P.A. workers. we have done all in our power to eliminate the lay-off provision but due to the solid Republican vote combined with 30 or 40 Democrats who are opposed to President Roosevelt's policies and the Administration our efforts were in vain. Nevertheless I shall continue my fight for the elimination of the provision." Although the Committee on Rules that Sabath chaired from 1937 on was powerful he was considered a weak leader who squabbled with the House leadership and failed to effectively steer the committee -- thus it's not surprising that New Deal programs of which he was a strong supporter suffered setbacks such as this under his committee. Accompanied by an outstanding original 6½" X 8½" glossy black and white news agency 1947 photograph an amusing closeup showing the cigar-clutching octogenarian puckering up to blow out the single large candle on an 81st birthday cake. Near fin -- a sharp high quality image. The original mimeographed newsprint caption is still present and reads in part: "Representative Adolph Sabath. is about to blow out the single candle that adorned his birthcake as he celebrated his 81st anniversary yesterday. Re. Sabath who is now in his 41st year as a member of the House of Representatives came to the U.S. 65 years ago from Czechoslovakia as a poor immigrant boy." On United States Senate letterhead Bulkley sends "a copy of the bill claiming damages for homes destroyed by Civil War soldiers. which is now pending before the Senate Claims Committee." Large bold full signature in blue fountain pen. Also present is the aforementioned printed bill 1p 7½" X 11" Washington DC 1937 January 11. Very good. Bit of minor wear and age toning along bottom edge. "S. 597" 75th Congress 1st Session being "A Bill to repeal the prohibition upon the filing of Civil War claims." Introduced by Tennessee senator Kenneth D. McKellar 1869-1957 this unusual bill sought to repeal a 1915 statute that restricted certain types of Civil War-related damage claims. Chicago: Phillips Greenwald & Schmohl n.y. Broadside. Folio 19" X 17½". Good plus. Original single vertical and horizontal mailing folds visible but not weakened; lightly age toned with homely brownish water spots scattered throughout clearly visible but not terribly disfiguring; edges slightly trimmed not affecting his likeness but slightly impeding upon the large "J" at lower left. Near the lithographer's credit at lower left the "Union Label" or seal for the L.I.P. & B.A. appears. A handsome life-size head-and-shoulders three-quarters pose of the up-and-coming ex-judge with "Judge Richard Yates" along the lower margin in a large typeface. Undated but likely 1901. The 40-ish Yates -- who with hair parted down the middle and handlebar moustache would fit nicely into any barbershop quartet -- gazes thoughtfully to the viewer's right. His turn-of-the-century outfit includes a high-buttoning suitcoat open to reveal a vest elaborate striped tie and stiff starched collar -- all nicely accomplished in this fine example of the lithographer's art. Yates had served as a county judge from 1894 to 1897 then won the governorship on the Republican ticket in 1901 serving until 1905 and not seeking reelection; in 1919 he was elected to Congress and served until 1933. Yates' father Richard Sr. 1815-73 served in Congress 1851-55 as Illinois' war-time governor 1861-65 and as senator 1865-71. Son of the American stage star Edward Askew Sothern junior was a standard in many a Broadway romance and adventure production from the 1880s on; he married Julia Marlowe and starred with her in Shakespearian dramas. AQS heavy stock 3½" X 2" card tipped to slightly larger brown autograph album leaf n.p. n.y. Near fine. In his usual hurried scrawl that makes the text of this quotation unfortunately illegible Sothern pens two brief lines perhaps "What a - - / love is & etc / Highest Buddha" -- or perhaps not! in a rich brown ink signing "Yrs EH Sothern" as usual. Despite the improbability of an accurate transcription an interesting attractive piece. unknown

American huge-grinned comedian and actor often remembered for his hilarious portrayal of millionaire Osgood Fielding III in "Some Like It Hot" 1959. Huge and bold "All good wishes to my friend / Donald Burnell / Joe E. Brown / 6/22/60" in blue ballpoint on an irregular-trimmed roughly-triangular 5¼" width at top X 4" height slip bearing "JOE E. BROWN" printed in green at the top -- presumably trimmed from a sheet of his letterhead. Very good. Other than odd shape quite handsome. Accompanied by a superb vintage sepia-tone heavy stock 5" X 7" matte-finish photograph bearing a preprinted signature and inscription at the bottom -- a head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling young Brown as he appeared in the 1930s the kind of image sent out by the studios in bulk at the time in response to fan mail. Addressed to Albert Johannsen a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "I am interested in your professorship of petrology remembering that in Washington we had to appoint a scientist of a type new to me whom I think was called a petrographer. English maker of miniatures. PS 7¼" X 8½" n.p. 1935 September 26. Near fine. An unusual transportation-related item printed on thin glazed stock this photograph bears a 4-line printed caption on the lower margin: "ROYAL POLO CART / Princess Mary Driving in the Park. / Model Built by / CHARLES GLASGOW Coach Builder PAISLEY." Above this appears a superbly-detailed miniature carriage driven by a woman in fashionable riding gear with a single white horse pulling. Above this set within an oval frame is the elderly Glasgow in suit and Derby hat. Near the caption Glasgow boldly signs and dates it. The occasion for the issuance of this is uncertain but probably ties in with the lavish 1935 Silver Jubilee celebrations of George V -- perhaps an exhibit of miniatures depicting the royal family at different times of their lives. Princess Mary 1867-1953 married the future king in 1893. Most unusual. unknown

"Will you send me at Washington the Burke autograph contained in your last Bulletin #1 sent me this morning price $7.50." Strong bold signature with words "at Washington" in Hoar's hand as well. There are a number of historical Burkes this could have been referring to but it is likely that this American politician would have taken an interest in the British statesman. This legendary California commercial artist headed the Muirson Label Company for a half century; he created the original artwork for the 1988 U.S. "Carreta 1770s" stamp. Signed pseudo-First Day Cover 5½" X 3½" n.p. 1988 August 30. Near fine. Not actually a postally cancelled First Day Cover but a special cover created by the artist himself and hand labeled "First Day of Issue Aug. 30 88." Two 7.6-cent "Carreta1770s" stamps at upper right. At left are two small line drawings of carretas printed in brown ink and the verso is filled with a line drawing captioned "Circa 1800-1850 Californios Rode in Carretas / Crude Wooden Two-Wheeled Carts Drawn by Oxen" also printed in brown ink. Above this drawing the artist pens "Paul -- Used this scene on a cachet. / RR." Rambo pens the two "R"s back to back the second one in reverse so the result looks like a cattle brand. On the front side in the address portion at right Rambo addresses this to Paul Johnston though it was neither mailed nor postally cancelled and in the message portion at left he writes "Paul / Drew this up just / for the celebration. / Ralph Rambo / RR / Used the scene on / reverse on a cachet." A most unusual non-First Day Cover -- though hand labeled "First Day Cover" by the stamp's artist! unknown

Famed Mexican caricaturist and sculptor who worked and exhibited in New York in the 1920s and '30s; in a February 1936 "Time" magazine review of an exhibit of his figures in Manhattan the review noted his "brilliantly colored little figures" wax pieces less than 6" tall; he described Hidalgo as a "round-faced swart young man. hates parties is intensely serious neither drinks nor smokes works ten hours a day owns only one suit of clothes and has traveled by ox cart automobile and burro. studying the Indians of his native land." TLS "Hidalgo" 1p 8¼" X 10 3/4" Mexico City Mexico 1948 November 16. Addressed to Mrs. Granger Brown. Very good. Mailing folds not weakened. Good content in English regarding a figurine he was commissioned to make for this Lake Forest Illinois socialite reading in part: "My suggestion is to make a baby deer. it is very difficult to send these figures by mail across the border I would suggest that we wait until possibly someone from Illinois comes to Mexico and can take them back personally. which will eliminate the many problems and red tape involved with the Customs." Handsome bold signature in brown ink. At lower left he makes a delightful small sketch using blue red and green pencil of a Mexican peasant in large sombrero back to the viewer seated in the grass -- quite charming. Unusual. unknown

This famed hybridizer was legendary in the specialized world of rose cultivation and served as director of research for Jackson & Perkins the renowned California rose cultivator; he was responsible for developing an astonishing 110 rose varieties two of which "Medallion" and "Red Masterpiece" were chosen by the U.S. Post Office for a special stamp issued in 1978. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Shreveport Louisiana on July 11 1978 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Eight 15-cent rose stamps affixed. No decorative cachet or distracting recipient's name/address. Warriner signs boldly in black ballpoint right on the "sweet spot." Extremely attractive and surprisingly uncommon.
