To this "New York Times" executive attempting to arrange speakers for the Dutch Treat Club Buck comments: "I know he J. Edgar Hoover is a very busy guy these days but he has never broken his word with me in 20 years. Heíll come and I trust it will be soon." With original envelope addressed by Buck. This popular Italian-American operatic basso one of the greats of the first half of the 20th century appeared at the Metropolitan Opera from 1926 to 1948; post opera he appeared in some films and on Broadway in "South Pacific" in 1949. Large bold attractive "To Mr. / Preston Sawyer / Very Sincerely / Ezio Pinza / S. Francisco 1930" boldly penned in black fountain pen on a pristine cream-colored 6" X 3 3/4" autograph album leaf. Near fine. At right center a 1" X 1½" magazine photograph of Pinza has been neatly affixed. A superb example of this rather uncommon signature. Henry Wallace throws out the first ball at the game between the Washington Senators and the Philadelphia Athletics opening the 1944 season. Vice Pres. Addressed to "Friend Donald." Very good. Several small tape stains at the margins touching upon several words including the "to" in "Galento". "I am down in the Everglades Florida" Galento writes an admirer "playing the part of a character called 'Beef' in a movie called 'Across the Everglades' produced by the Schulberg Productions look for it this winter in your local movie house. Keep punching." "Wind Across the Everglades" a drama set in early Florida was written produced and directed by Budd Schulberg and starred Burl Ives Christopher Plummer Gypsy Rose Lee and Peter Falk. It was released in 1958 thereby dating this undated piece to approximately 1958. An interesting item written from on location. Uncommon. unknown

The Game of the Century" is how the very first All-Star Game of July 6 1933 at Chicago's Comiskey Park is described when Babe Ruth whacked a two run home run off NFL pitcher Bill Halahan in the third inning -- and the photo of him doing so became one of the most famed baseball photos ever -- with White Sox bat boy John McBride in the background. Inscribed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Chicago Illinois on 6 July 1983 and with "First Day of Issue" stamped. Fine. Single 20-cent "Babe Ruth" stamp at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no recipient's name/address. Large bold inscription and signature in black ballpoint fills most of the entire left half: "With Best Wishes to / Paul Johnston from / the old Bat Boy of 1933 / John McBride / The Babe was quite a guy and also / the greatest athlete of this Century." When the U.S. Navy Band was created by Act of Congress in 1925 this lieutenant was named its first leader; under his tutelage it played for many historic occasions such as Charles Lindbergh's return in 1927 from his trans-Atlantic flight and Admiral Richard E. Byrd's return in 1929 from his South Pole Flight; he founded the Navy School of Music in 1935 to help supply qualified musicians to the band. "Lieut Chas Beuter U.S.N / Leader U.S. Navy Band / Wash. D.C. / Regards" in bold blue fountain pen on a pale yellow 5½" X 4½" slip dated at bottom October 1929 in another hand. Very good. A small newspaper portrait of Beuter is affixed to the lower left portion not affecting writing. Interesting and unusual. This was signed at a Chautauqua meeting where Beuter gave a lecture or performance. unknown

Minor yellowish tape stain at each corner not terribly disfiguring and well away from signatures. Original black-and-white snapshot likely one of a kind showing what appears to be an arena dressing room probably Chicago's Amphitheatre with a smiling Gilbert and Goelz in wrestling trunks side by side. At upper right in a darkish area Gilbert inscribes it in red fineline marker "My / Best / Partner / Johnny Gilbert." Across his chest also in red fineline Goelz boldly signs. Contrast on Gilbert fair to good contrast on Goelz excellent. A unique image of two stars posing for a fan from the Golden Age of Wrestling. unknown

This nonacademic English philosopher was a companion of William James with whom he belonged to the London group "Scratch Eight"; he was the first president 1880-94 of the Aristotelian Society; among his books are "The Metaphysic of Experience" "The Philosophy of Reflection" and "Time and Space." ALS 3pp 4½" X 7" Lincolnshire England 1870 July 18. Addressed to "My dear Harris." Very good. Good content referring to the political situation in France. In part: "If you go to Paris now you will find it at a most interesting time in all the fever of the beginning of the war. I think their going to war on the part of France out of pure jealousy of Prussia utilised by Napoleon for the supposed interest of his own dynasty is treason to the cause of civilisation and the union of Western Europe." Sure enough France declared war on Prussia the very day after Hodgson penned this letter. Mentions his summer plans "quietly and steadily reading in London in August when London is empty and though hot not feverish". A handsome and interesting example. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown

Italian-born American composer and pianist. TLS 2pp 6½" X 8" Brooklyn NY 1925 May 16. Addressed to pianist John Leiser. Fine. Fascinating lengthy explanation of how he came to write "Secrets of the Success of Great Musicians." In part: "Why was it for instance that some well educated intelligent person was not at all liked by the majority and indeed was a failure in life I soon discovered that lack of manners a repellant personality an easily recognizable egotism were responsible for this misfortune. Others again have been blessed with the divine spark of genius but they never reached prominence in life. Why In my investigations I found out that the reason for their lack of success was that they did not concentrate their efforts in that special branch for which they were gifted they lacked the 'stick to it' they were too erratic 'Jack of all trades master in none.' Others on the contrary although endowed with a very small amount of talent made for themselves an enviable name and obtained important and influential positions. Why Because they were indefatigable workers and compensated the lack of genius with their diligence and pertinacity." With original envelope. Accompanied by IP 4" X 6" New York NY 1925 n.d. After two decades of false starts and endless stalls in February 1851 the Illinois legislature at last incorporated the long-anticipated Illinois Central Railroad Company. Staking and surveying began immediately and the first section -- running between Chicago and Calumet -- opened for traffic on May 24 1852. Despite the fact that this railroad was the first ever to receive a federal land grant they had a difficult time finding investors to purchase these bonds. Printed Document 1p 12 3/4" X 13¼" New York NY 1852 August 16. Very good. Minor edgewear; bit of edgewear on some original folds not weakened. Printed on pale blue stock this handsome provisional certificate promises a six percent return. Typical boilerplate text with a variety of ornamental typefaces signed at the conclusion by the company president Robert Schuyler president and director from 1852 to 1854 at lower right and company secretary S.A. Lofson at lower left both heavily cross-hatched to cancel. Attractive ornamental border and below this the lower quarter consists of nine small coupons on which the interest payments are recorded all but one signed and heavily cancelled. Several large "Cancelled" and "Interest Paid" inkstamps cross these coupons the main boilerplate text and the signatures area. All in all a most attractive piece -- scarce from the earliest days of this important undertaking. unknown

Italian-American opera singer for many years a leading basso with the Chicago Opera. IPS Underwood 8" X 10" Chicago IL 1928 February 14. Near fine. Wonderful sepia-tone half-length portrait of Trevisan as Sir Tristan sniffing a rose in the romantic comic opera "Martha" boldly inscribed and signed in black ink in a light area at upper right: "Chicago February 14/1928 / To Mr. John Leiser / Sincerely / Vittoria Trevisan." The "14/1928" ink faint. Leiser was a well-known Chicago pianist and music educator. Quite charming. unknown

Boston: James Cutler 1814. Paperback. Folio 13¼" X 19½". Self-cover. 4pp. Good plus. Mildly and evenly age toned with mild edgewear; separated at fold. Overall clean and attractive though easily legible and quite handleable. A nice copy of the October 21st 1814 issue No. 1 Vol. 4 of this weekly which was founded in 1811 and in 1814 changed ownership when Nathan Hale acquired it and changed the name to the "Boston Weekly Messenger" also changing the size and format. This issue is filled with notable War of 1812 news the front page including two lengthy communications signed in type by U.S. commissioners JOHN QUINCY ADAMS HENRY CLAY ALBERT GALLATIN J.A. BAYARD and JONATHAN RUSSELL reporting on their attempts to negotiate a peace treaty at Ghent. There's also page 2 an "Official Account of the Repulse of the British at Mobile" and page 4 a "Biographical Sketch of Lieut. John G. Cowall Late of the U.S. Navy." A fine period piece. Single 3 3/4" X 1½" oval-shaped paper loss just left of top edge of front page -- alongside masthead steel-engraved vignette; otherwise tight and clean and completely free of edge tears with just the slightest bit of age toning and faint dampstaining. Attractive example of this central Illinois newspaper from the county seat of De Witt County. Entire front page and it continues is filled with the always-fun "Delinquent Tax List" -- otherwise good and typical rural Illinois content. Numerous advertisements including delightful examples featuring the newly-popular large steel engravings: patent medicines such as "Dr. Willis's Anodinized Sharks Oil for Deafness Noises in the Head and Painful Affections of the Ear" household "Fresh Arrivals at Sherman's. This innovative Chicago publisher 1876-88 came up with the idea of using young boys to hawk his "Chicago Daily News"; he also served as president of Associated Press 1894-1900 and was a powerful leader for civic reform. LS 1p 4 3/4" X 6¼" Green Lake WI 1914 October 13. Addressed to Seymour Eaton 1859-1916 Canadian-born literary and marketing genius best known for the Teddy-G and Teddy-B illustrated series he created. Near fine. On pale green letterhead Lawson sends "Thanks for sympathy in the great bereavement that has come to me." Lawson wife of 34 years Jessie Bradley daughter of a prominent Chicago family had died shortly before. unknown
