‎England. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1896. Non-Book. On offer is an autograph letter written and signed by Charles Harford Lloyd 1849-1919 written to Sir William Henry Hadow 1859-1937. Dated Oct. 26 1896 Lloyd writes to Hadow suggesting music for a Ball and including sketches of part of the scores from Mozart’s Concerto in D Minor and a D Minor Concerto. Lloyd concludes the letter writing “They are breathtaking songs but wonderfully beautiful”. The letter is written on Eaton College Windsor letterhead. BIO NOTES: Sir William Henry Hadow a leading educational reformer in Great Britain and a musicologist. Charles Harford Lloyd was an English composer and organist. Charles became a well-known organist. Charles' most successful area was organ and choral but he wrote 3 clarinet pieces for his friend Randle Fynes Holme 1864-1957 While studying at Magdalen Hall Lloyd was founder with his friend Hubert Parry and first president of the Oxford University musical club. He was organist of Gloucester Cathedral 1876-1881 Christ Church Cathedral Oxford 1882-1891 then music teacher at Eton College from 1892. After retirement he was appointed organist at the Chapel Royal St. James from 1914. On offer is an simple yet interesting diary written by a woman in eastern Massachusetts in 1929.The author of the diary is Gladys Smith White. Our research has found little biographical information about her. She lived on Chase Street in Newton Massachusetts and was married to Allan S. White. Allan passed away in 1925 and Gladys passed away in 1954. There is a note in a Newton newspaper from 1921 indicating that Allan had been admitted to hospital so it is reasonable to assume that he was ill for a long period of time before his eventual death. Gladys kept this diary four years after the death of her husband. Context suggests that she may have had several older children. Her entries describe the social activities and day-to-day concerns of a woman who had been recently widowed. Excerpts from the diary follow: “Waxed the floors then took a bath and went out shopping. Went up to Rebecca’s and played cards this evening. Had a nice time. Ben was here for supper” Jan 12. “Went to church. Mr. & Mrs. Hudson called also Mrs Farlett Ben & Ginny. roommate came tonight. Telegram – Choate house burnt” Feb 24. “Virginia still home. Went down to Ben’s for the evening. I went to Minie’s” Mar 26. “Virginia Charlotte and I went down to Minie’s for luncheon & Virginia is to stay the week. I am cleaning the house” May 6. “Went down to Franklin with Mrs. Blodgette shopping. Met Janet all to luncheon. Then went home with and Fred. Had nice dinner with them. We went down shopping again. Got things for Alice’s birthday” Aug 31. For a Women’s Studies researcher this small diary offers an interesting glimpse into the world of a middle-aged woman living in small-town Massachusetts during the 1920s. The daily life of her and her friends is now a world away from that of women today and serves as a clear contrast. The diary is small measuring 4 inches by 2.5 inches. It contains 122 pages plus memoranda. The diary is about 40% complete. The covers are pebbled leather and in good condition as is the spine and binding. ‎1958-59 Cold War-Era American Railroad Engineer Handwritten Diary Detailing Successful Post-War USA While Reflecting on Global Events like the Berlin Crisis‎

‎Augusta Georgia: Augusta Georgia CWC Railroad Engineer. Fair with no dust jacket. 1958-1959. First Edition. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting America diary dating from the dark days of the Cold War. The author of this 5-year diary is unknown. It was given to him in 1931 by a woman named Annie Lee - surname unknown. The interesting thing is that although it was given in 1931 it was not used until 1958 and 1959. By that time from context it is clear that 'Annie Lee' is now the author's wife. From context we can also determine that the is married man was living in Augusta Georgia with his family and worked for the CWC Railroad as a switch engineer. The diary gives a good look at the day-to-day life of a working man in the post-war southern United States. He and his family are doing well in the booming post-war economy of the United States. Some excerpts: "We went over to Edgefield SC looking and getting some prices on a station wagon. The Ford prices at Yonce Motor Co straight sale #2350 with trade in on the chev $1925 diff. Same day the chev co didn't give us a very good brake." Jan 12; "Sears Robuck & co open. There new store this morning at 8: 30 AM at Walton Way and 15 St with a bank. We visited the store had some crowds you could hardly move for the people." Feb 18. He is certainly aware of outside events taking place. In several places he notes the crisis brewing with the Soviet Union over the status of Berlin: "The war clouds are drifting low over Berlin Germany these days." Feb - Memo page: This refers to the Berlin Crisis. As living standards in communist-controlled East Germany plummeted refugees by the thousands poured into West Berlin and onward to West Germany Khrushchev demanded that the United States Britain and France withdraw from Berlin. The Crisis culminated in the construction of the Berlin Wall. Other notable local events were captured by the author: ". The golf masters had their parade on Broad Street" Mar 31; "Bought Ford car Sand Bar Ferry Bridge open for traffic for first time plowed out garden" Apr 29. For a social historian this diary in its simplicity paints a good picture of post-war life in the urban south through the eyes of a working man. This diary measures 4.0 inches by 5.5 inches and contains 365 pages. It is about 50% complete. The cover is a light brown pebbled leather that has sustained damage. The front cover has pulled loose from the spine. There was a closure strap and clasp but that is now missing. The spine has cracked. The pages are in fair condition showing some staining from use and wear. All are accounted for.
