"Helmut Friedlaender's wonderful incunabula - his library's forte - and to a lesser extent the selective group of medieval manuscripts the milestones of science and literature of later centuries demonstrate what could still be done in traditional collecting at a time when it seemed to some cognoscenti that choice might be running out. If desire was strong enough means and energy sufficiently available - and Mr Friedlaender had all of these - rare books were to be found. In fact he showed two other qualities essential to any collector: persistence and patience." Lots 186-559 those comprising this Part II. These include 49 lots which comprise "a highly unusual and carefully formed collection of documents dating from the 12th to the 20th centuries which bear seal impressions in wax. Spines of books are darkened in varying degrees with a couple being almost black one volume has a 2" chip on the marbled cover the cover on one volume is holding on by a few threads though most of the hinges are nicely intact almost all of the volumes show some wear to the spine ends and/or leather on the covers. There are no bookplates or ownership markings of any kind and based on the tightness of the hinges and the many uncut pages few of these volumes have been read. VERY GOOD-. . He was born at Torreglia in what is now the province of Padua then in the Republic of Venice in 1682. As professor of logic and regent of the schools Facciolati became the leading academic of Padua university during a period of forty-five years. He published improved editions of several philological works such as the Thesaurus Ciceronianus of Nizolius and in 1719 he brought out a revised edition of the Lexicon Septem Linguarum a Latin dictionary in seven languages called the Calepinus from the name of its author the monk Ambrogio Calepino. . Generously illustrated with 102 woodcuts. Translated by Thomas Johnes Esq. Enguerrand de Monstrelet c. 1400 - 1453 was a French chronicle writer and author of the Chronique de Enguerrand de Monstrelet. He was born in Picardy most likely into a family of the minor nobility. In 1436 and later he held the office of lieutenant of the gavenier at Cambrai and he seems to have made this city his usual place of residence. He was for some time bailiff of the cathedral chapter and then provost of Cambrai. Little else is known about Monstrelet except that he was present not at the capture of Joan of Arc but at her subsequent interrogation with Philip the Good duke of Burgundy. Continuing the work of Froissart Monstrelet wrote a Chronicle which extends to two books and covers the period between 1400 and 1444 when according to another chronicler Mathieu d'Escouchy he ceased to write. But following a custom which was by no means uncommon in the Middle Ages a sequel extending to 1516 was formed out of various chronicles and attached to his work. Monstrelet's own writings dealing with the latter part of the Hundred Years' War are valuable because they contain a large number of documents which are certainly and reported speeches which are probably authentic. Full title: The Chronicles of Enguerrand De Monstrelet; containing an Account of the Cruel Civil War between the Houses of Orleans and Burgundy; of the Possession of Paris and Normandy by the English; Their Expulsion thence; and of other Memorable Events that Happened in the Kingdom of France as well as in Other Countries. A History of Fair Example and of Great Profit to the French beginning at the Year 1400 where that of Sir John Froissart finishes and ending at the year 1467 and continued by others to the year 1516." . John Cowper Powys 1872-1963 was a British novelist lecturer philosopher literary critic and poet. Powys is a somewhat controversial writer "who evokes both massive contempt and near idolatry". Thus while Walter Allen in Tradition and Dream recognizes Powys's genius he is dissatisfied with what Powys has done with it seeing Powys’s approach to the novel as "so alien to the temper of the age as to be impossible for many people to take seriously". Annie Dillard however views things quite differently: "John Cowper Powys is a powerful genius whose novels stir us deeply." What is noteworthy is that throughout his career he consistently gained the admiration of novelists as diverse as Theodore Dreiser Henry Miller Iris Murdoch Margaret Drabble and James Purdy as well as the academic critics George Painter G.
