‎1870 HANDWRITTEN TRAVEL DIARY AND EYEWITNESS TO THE BEGINNING OF THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR‎

‎IRELAND ENGLAND FRANCE. Good. 1870. On offer is an original exciting handwritten European travel diary beginning April 30th 1870 and ending about 3 ½ months later on August 10th specifically used to record one person's adventures on board a steamer sailing to Europe. While unidentified our author was very faithful with their journaling during the 3 ½ months touring England Ireland and in particular France as she was a witness to the beginnings of the Franco-Prussian War and for all intents and purposes the beginning of the modern Era for France Germany and all of Europe. Mere days before the war begins she sees the King of Prussia gambling and she reports of the difficulties in getting money all of a sudden. Here are snippets: 1870 "April 30th Left New York in Steamer "City of Brooklyn" at 1 ½ p.m. Left Sandy Hook 5 p.m. Fine weather." "May 5th Clear and smooth. Very narrow escape last night. Dark and rather thick. Steamer attempted to cross our bow. Came within 30 ft. of her. If we had struck here would have sank us both." "May 8th Beautiful day. Nemesis close to us trying to pass us." "May 9th Clear and fine. No wind. Raced with Nemesis all day. Beat her about 2 miles loaded with very heavy with corn in bulk. Nemesis with light load of cotton. Saw land at 2 p.m. Cape Clear. Passed ______light. Arrived at Queenstown at 9:30. Took the tender to wharf. Stopped at Victoria Hotel. First acquaintance with custom's house." "May 10th Took a walk about Queenstown. Beautiful town. 2:15 took steamer for Cork up River Lee. Passed some beautiful mansions and old castles….Reached Cork at 3. Went to Imperial Hotel. Took jaunting care to Blarney Castle. Beautiful roads to Cork." "May 11th Rainy. Left Cork for Mallon at 2 ½ p.m. Staid at Mallon 3 hrs. Visited Mallon Castle on the Black water. Took cars at 7 p.m. for Killarney. Reached Killarney at 9:15. Took omni bus for Victoria Hotel 2 miles and arrived just before a very severe storm of rain and wind." "May 17th Started early for Kinstown. Took steamer for Holyhead. Nasty rainy day and the worst possible sea. Was sick about 5 minutes. Crossed the Atlantic without feeling bad. Arrived at Holyhead at 11 a.m. Rode in car through Wales to Chester. Beautiful ride by seashore on one side and mountains on the other. Saw several old castles." "May 25th Touring London Visited the British Museum. Saw the Egyptian relics Nineveh's sculptures Elgin Marbles &c. Then to regents Park and went through the Zoological Gardens. Afterward to the Watercolor Society exhibition. Saw some fine watercolors by Birket Foster Gilbert Watson Walker Calton Topham &c." Talks about seeing the Dreadnought Hospital ship Greenwich hospital observatory White Hart Hotel and more. "June 1st Paris At 9 ½ took one of the meanest boats in existence for Calais. Took a private cabin on deck and was charged 1 pound for 1 ½ hours. Took cars at Calais. Went to Boulogne and Amiens. Arrived at Paris at 6. Got trunks through all right. Went to Hotel Rivoli Rue de Rivoli. Front room looking into the Tuileries Garden." "June 12th Went up to Long Champs by Bois de Bore with carriages and then to the races. The Grand Paris. Great crowd of first class carriages. Saw the Emperor Empress and Prince Imperial on the way back down avenue Champs-Elysees. There was a fine display of turnouts and an immense crowd of lookers on." "June 22nd Went to the Allen Line to see about passage. At 1 took guide. Went to Pere Lachaise Cemetery. A queer ugly looking mixed pile of tombs…." "July 1st At Oberlahnstein. Afternoon went to Emsbad ems of Bathems. Saw the King of Prussia and gambling in the great gambling room Rouge et Noir and Roulette same as at Baden Baden. Men and women croupiers everything in regal. Went upon the heights above the town……beautiful view." "July 20th Find that the war is raising particular with everything almost impossible to get gold and all other money is at discount. The French government have taken the train on the Paris RR and everything is likely to be disagreeable." "July 29th Started for London by the Dreppe Steamer. At 9:50 reached Rouen at 12. Dreppe at 2. Sea very rough no staterooms. Hired the captain's room. All sick. Got to London at 11 ½ at Morley's Hotel. Same rooms as before." "August 8th Went aboard the Batavia and found my trunk….At 5 sailed from Liverpool. Very still and quiet. Sun set in a little fog." The diary measures about 3 ½" x 6" and has a very worn cover and pulling away from the binding. ‎HOLLY SYRACUSE NEW YORK. Good. 1921. On offer are three handwritten manuscript diaries written by Miriam Hammond a young woman we estimate 16 or 17 she graduates Normal B School in 1923 who lived in Holly New York. Miriam is attending school in Syracuse. These diaries detail the years 1921 1923 and 1924. The 1921 diary is written in a 1916 diary. Miriam is a gal with a lot of personality and she is a fine representative of the 'Flapper' era Miriam seems to focus a great deal on men and dating. In fact it takes Miriam only 3 entries in the first book for her to meet a new fellow admit she likes him and then breaks curfew to keep the date going. She notes giving a ring back to a particular fellow and the many many brothers of her many many girlfriends are all potential dates. These diaries are a whirlwind of activity. Here are some snippets: 1921 "Went to Syracuse on 3 trolley. Arrived at 5:45. Nina met me. Had supper at the "Y". Went to the Eckel with Chet Charlotte Don Nina and I. Had a good time. W. Curtis did not come til 11 p.m." "Went to church in a.m. Went to hear sermon on "Evils of Modern Dancing." Went up to Cole's Had popcorn etc. Met Rodney Cook." "St. Patrick's Day. Sent a card to Stan. Went to school. Went to Legion dance at night with Gilbert Deloris and Floyd. Taylor's orchestra. Wonderful time. To bed at 5:00 a.m." "Expected Gilbert Jessie and Doe up in p.m. Came about 6:00. Went to Bergen. LeRoy and Avon to the White Horse Tavern. Had clams clam bouillon lobsters baked chicken and grapefruit. Wonderful time. Back to city and home on last car." "Got up at 7:00. Ready to go to N. Rose. Started at 8:45 arrived there at 12:20. Passed thru Rock iron deposit. W. Webster Union Hill Fruitland Ontario Center Williamson Sodus Wallington Alton. N. Rose. Had a wonderful wedding. Star played wedding march. Nina sang "Oh Promise Me." Decorated car with tin cans etc. Liked Tom very much." "Howard Davis Jean Howard Hazel Ferris and I went to Sea Breeze to the M. I. picnic. Saw circus parade in a.m. Ate lunch at Durand-Eastman. Saw races games took ride down toward Sodus Pt. Rode on Dogin Dip Dip the Dips Jack Rabbit Whip and ate and ate and ate. Danced. Had a wonderful time." Another interesting note - Miriam always mentions times - going to bed appointments etc. and she usually reefers to the time by 'bells' - went to bed at 11 bell. Perhaps her father was in the navy A more than casual reading will no doubt provide further background and for local historians and collectors who will find a treasure trove of local events and genealogical information as this hugely busy young ladies names all her visits and contacts in school and at home. ‎SCOTLAND IRELAND ENGLAND DUBLIN EDINBURGH UK. Good. 1809. On offer is a remarkable original 1809 - 1833 handwritten manuscript book once used by the British Army's 94th Regiment of Foot. This book contains all manner of writings relevant to the running and goings-on of the Regiment by the Officers. The book is rather eclectic containing standing orders regimental orders different charts and forms for payroll and other reportage for example on the conditions of the Dublin Garrison orders of the day direct communications between officers public requests for leave advancement of funds settling of accounts etc. public apologies for poor behavior copies of letters sent to superiors up to and including the Duke of York Commander of all His Majesty's Forces and many other of Britain's peerage and there are even personal reminiscences notes of reference for departing soldiers plus much much more. Most of the entries of personal notes and those for Day Book purposes are signed by all manner of officers and peerage; Colonels Captains Lords and many reference specific orders by the Supreme Commander of the Army or even the King. Most fascinating are the 'Memorialist' messages of certain officers writing in the 3rd person touting themselves while seeking favor. 164 pp of history and methodology of this noted British Army regiment contained in this entirely handwritten book. Most of the entries are circa 1809 - 1827 but the oldest entry in the book is dated Edinburgh Castle 1833 and is addressed to what appears to be 'My Dear Beaver' while the correspondent signs in initials F.M. late of St. Lucia. He makes reference to Mr. Beaver as the clergyman that baptized his 3 children. Also of note: on the very last page written upside down are a quote a note and an invitation dated Fort Charlotte 1825 to His Excellency Major General Blackwell by Mr. and Mrs. Murray. Many clues for the astute researcher will assuredly unveil many of the writers in this fascinating piece of British militaria. Save for the front cover being nearly detached and some loosened endpapers this book would be G. ‎ENGLAND. Good. 1879. Original Wraps. On offer is an original handwritten 1879 diary. The unidentified author lived in England around the city of Brighton and it would seem was a member of high society. There are frequent mentions of parties and guests and he also mentions trips to Richmond and Winchester hunting parties etc. The entries start on January 3rd and stop on April 9th. Local historians or collectors will appreciate the wealth of local notations and with newspaper clippings pasted to the pages including many weddings births and other milestones including a visit by the Prince of Wales. Here are some snippets: 1879 "January 4th Lark shooting continues. Jack Wylde came to assist in the slaughter and to lunch. I am going to afternoon dance at Richmond." "January 11th Very cold. Frost has now lasted since Monday. Skating on all the parks and Serpentine. Thames covered with floating ice. Boats and steamboats stop running. A late snow in the afternoon." "February 7th Rompey died today of dropsy. RIP. Mr. ________turned up in the afternoon and asked me to go to Brighton with him for a few days as he was so depressed at times that he thought he wanted someone with him. We went down to Brighton by 10:15 train from Victoria to Old Ship." "March 1st A paper in the museum from 2 to 3. In "Givins" room. Dined with Dallaway at the "Wanderers" and afterward to A. Chambers. Saw the Wylder's carriage coming back from Welsh Festival at Albert Hall." "March 13th Grand marriage of the Duke of Connaught to Princess Margarete of Prussia in St. George's Chapel Windsor. Went home to dinner and afterwards to S_______ to a small dance. It was most successful. Enjoyed it very much. Danced several times with Mary Miss Carter and Miss Blackie. Kate's 19th birthday." "March 19th At home in the morning. ‎NAPA VALLEY CALIFORNIA CA ST. HELENA. Good. 1900. On offer is a super manuscript diary by renowned California painter Lucy E. Wiester as evidenced by the holograph entry "Mrs. W. H. Wiester 1900-1901" and then her address in San Francisco also in her hand there are archival notes in pencil in a later hand reading: 'St. Helena Diary' where she resided in Napa Valley California. It appears our writer used an older 1897 diary which has about 9 days entries for 1897 by the previous owner almost certainly a family member as similar people are mentioned but then Lucy picks up the book and writes for the most daily entries from January 1st through May 16th 1900 then somewhat more sporadically to April 1901. We learn that Lucy is a married busy thriving artist and active member of the community in Napa Valley. Research finds she was born in 1843 Illinois. The diary relates many instances of wild-flowering hearing concerts like the Knickerbocker Quartet and the Neopolitain mandolin California Club meetings artist trips and much much more. She does a great job mentioning the names of her visitors contacts and intimates. This is a very interesting bit of California Americana of an early 20th century artist. ‎ST. JOHNSBURY VERMONT VT. Good. 1876. On offer is an archive of handwritten manuscript letters that belonged to Helen Wood of St. Johnsbury Vermont. The letters which date circa 1876 - 1888 interestingly are both to and from Helen. In all there are 15 letters and 7 of those still have their envelopes. Then there are 9 empty covers. These letters will be of particular interest to historians of the era as the correspondents were detailed in their writings. One letter written to Helen by a friend living in Brooklyn New York dated 1887 relates over 4 pages a fascinating account of the way Brooklyn is changing especially 5th avenue. Here are some snippets: "N.H. College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts Letterhead Hanover N.H. March 7th 1886 Dear Sister I received a letter from you last Tuesday. I do not feel much older than I did last year. We had some rough weather here a little less than a week ago and since Harvey was away I was very busy keeping Culver Hall and myself warm. It was so cold here in my room that both radiators were frozen up a large part of the time. It was pretty cold boarding myself those days or in fact doing anything. It is quite comfortable now however and my ink etc. is thawed out…….Sincerely Yours George P. Wood." "St. Johsbury Vt. March 20th 1886 Dear Folks It is almost eight o'clock and I am just up. My sleep was disturbed in the night and I woke up about four and heard a queer kind of noise under my window. It sounded some like some one crying fire then like two or three men fighting and then I happened to remember that the freshman class from Hanover had their class supper at one at one of the Hotels last night. It must have been lots of fun to run round this building in a snowstorm at that time of day. After they got round they sang two or three songs gave two or three war whoops and tore themselves away. Judging from their songs they hated to leave us……Love to all Mary K.Wood." "New York May 11th 1887 Dear Helen Many thanks for your good letter and the beautiful collection of early flowers from the Old Lebanon Hills. They reached here safely though somewhat wilted from the close confinement and the loss of their pure mountain air. They embellished the mantle piece of the dining room for several days. While we all took several refreshing whiffs as we passed by……If you were to take a ride down 5th avenue you would not know the place. On the East Side there is but 1 block but what is either filled up or has been commenced upon. Even the old Polhemus Mansion cor. 5th Ave. and Carrol St. on that high bluff has been torn down and the Hill graded down and now covered with brick buildings mostly flats 4 stories high with stores underneath. Flat old Mansions on 1st & _______streets with all those beautiful shade trees in front have fallen victim to the march of improvement. The old house has been moved down to 3rd Ave. and converted into a Tenement House. "How art thou Fallen" The entire block is either covered with dwellings mostly 2 story and basements or cellars…….South of 7th St. every vacant lot is being filled up. Across the street from us they are putting up 6.3. stores and basement houses. Above 6th Ave. below the Episcopal Church there are 5 more going up. So it is all about us 5th 6th 7th & 8th Aves…….Saw the account of your disastrous fire in the evening papers with more particulars this morning. What a severe blow to the village and to so many people that have lost their homes with the savings of years. ‎NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA LA NEW YORK. Fair. 1856. Decorative Cloth. On offer is the original handwritten book: "THE PRIZE ALBUM" a book belonging to Miss Emma M. Slack of New Orleans dated March 16 1856 with entries by her friends schoolmates and loved ones. Many dozens of entries lovely calligraphy this is a true treasure of antebellum times in the old South. She was popular enough to cause a number of people to write affectionate poetry and prose to her in this book. Signatures include - Hattie P. H. W. F. Bailey Marnie N. Trowbridge F. Jackson Myrtilla Florance Madame Candais Augustine W. F. G. Schirmer Carmen Atocha Rowena Melovna Lockhart Winter Clara Wolfe Helen Schieffelin Josephine Miller and many more. This seems to be a book of parting perhaps a school graduation and of great interest are some New York based album entries. Here are some snippets: May Angels weave for thee a crown of immortality. Soon dear companion of my play We part to go a different way. The session and its joys are o're We part perhaps to meet no more. But let our early hope ariseTo that bright session in the skies. There may I meet- dear frined with you And never never bid Adieu. I will not say how dear thou art How oft my thoughts recur to theeI only ask when we shall depart That thou will sometimes think of me. A white rose I have placed for thee In the deep urn of memory. I do not wish that thou mayest be the gayest of the gay Nor glitter like a butterfly a being of the day But O! I wish that thou mayest be a being pure and bright As the angels that surround God's throne of eternal light; And O! I wish when life is past and thou from earth are gone That thou mayest rest in Heaven above the Christian's happy home. The book has about 100 pages not all but most of them are written on. The entries are dated from 1856 to 1858. There is a somewhat spiritual tone to not only the entries but also the wreath of flowers in gilt on the front board and the winged angel also in gilt on the back. Both boards are separated have wear and the spine covering is mostly gone. It seems that all page edges were gilted. The binding has begun to separate but most pages in the textblock seem to be holding together. 6" x 7 3/4". ‎France. Poor. 1890. On offer a rare antique of French militaria: the handwritten manuscript daily journal of the 3rd Company 27th Bataillon de Chasseurs a pied 12th Alpine Group dated from 1890. This famed battle group founded by the Duke of Orleans created in 1888 a mere 2 years prior this book writing 12 specialized mountain battalions in response to Italy's formation of 6 'Alpini' battalions. "Enregistrement journalier du travail fait dans la Compagnie." as stated on the 'title page'. The first six-seven pages or so have been handwritten by a scribe for the French Army laying out in detail the purpose of the journal the structure etc. A different hand we believe the writer to be Captain J. D. Chartrand begins by outlining even more specific instructions; Education Theory Military Code Hygiene Exercise Manouvers etc. It is evident that this book is an both an induction manual and progress report. Other hands detail daily the particular training of the day the supervising officers of the day and then individual progress is annotated. There are over 170 pages in this journal and appears to span 1890 to 1892. The journal proper is rather unique too handmade canvas cover over hard boards with marbelized endpapers. Inner hinge break makes for the book being in poor condition and several pages have come loose but all appear to be there. All pages are clean and legible. ‎New York New York NY USA Oneida Chenango county. Good. 1862. On offer is a super detailed Civil War era diary by a circuit-rider school teacher who we believe was a Charles J. Peterson of Philadelphia who details his visits stays 'scholars' and local events of the area he serviced in central New York state. The author has connections to the area as he mentions births and funerals specifically related to him and his family. This diary will prove a wealth of genealogical and historical first hand information in central New York State specifically Oneida and Chenango counties. Each day begins with where our author will sleep that night. He also records the number of students daily and then makes a separate note in the margin. Research suggests he is paid by the number of students he teaches per day. The writer is also very involved in the communities - singing schools assisting in farm chores; hauling wood taking up carpet tapping sugar bush cleaning up etc. being nominated at 'Caucus' to be a constable meetings with the Teacher's Association a child dying from diphtheria his own bout with Scarlet Fever and so on. It seems teaching duties end in the spring when the weather improves and though he travels around a bit still our writer settles with one family for the summer and does farm labor for the most part. Each day si a detailed record of Mr. McNicol's daily doings from home school and extra curricular activities. This is fascinating diary given it begins in almost lock-step with the war and we see from the young man's writings how life changes during the war from blacking out the windows of the house listening to the radio for news and of course personal comments such as "Dad makes himself generally objectionable". Mr. McNicol is an avid musician and he shows a marked interest in the music of Beethoven. Many pieces of ephemera litter the book mostly relating to music and concerts. Lengthy stipulations of taxes for the freed mestizos mulattoes and negroes as well as exemptions for Indians of the repartimientos even when married to Spanish women. These taxes were the root of the perceived injustice that explains why freed men formed the core of the Revolution when it came. Mexico 1794. ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: In 1519 the Spaniards conquered Mexico. This led to the formation of a new state called New Spain and later into a new hybrid culture. Several military expeditions were led to extend 'New Spain'. The whole of Central America West Indies Philippines and parts of the current Texas and California were later conquered to become part of New Spain. The Spanish political control over Mexico lasted for three centuries. The entire region was formed into a viceroyalty in 1535. The colony was divided into provinces ruled by governors. These provinces were divided into departments and subdivided into districts. Magistrates controlled the districts and mayors led smaller villages. The parliament court handled all political matters and the Council of Indies controlled the other administrative matters. Off course the supreme authority over the Spanish empire belonged to the king. This system was pretty inefficient as it took several years for directives from the king to be implemented at the lower levels. During the initial administration grants called Encomiendas were given to colonists which controlled Indian labor and produce. This led to the misuse of power and atrocities against the Indians increased. The Indians revolted against the Spaniards in 1541 but were easily subdued. The Spanish emperor Charles V initiated the decline of the Encomienda system in 1542. This decline saw the emmergence of the Roman Catholic Church. The church was successful in carrying out mass conversions. The Spaniards protected the Indians that converted. Missions and monasteries dominated much of the land. The Spaniards thrived by the new found wealth in the colonies. They amassed huge wealth by controlling silver mining large ranches and estates that grew wheat sugarcane and indigo for export. Spanish merchants exported such goods as cotton silk and dye that were produced by the Indians. The prosperity of New Spain began to decline in the 17th century. Disease and natural disasters destroyed most of the Indian population. Most others migrated slowly to remote parts. Mines were abandoned and large areas of farmland were destroyed. The economy of New Spain collapsed. In 1810 a catholic priest named Miguel Hidalgo called upon Mexicans to rise up and fight the Spanish. Although father Hidalgo was killed another priest Jose Morelos continued to lead the fighting. ‎VIENNA AUSTRIA WIEN THE ALPS. Good. 1929. On offer is a most remarkable handwritten journal of an Austrian mountain climber spanning the years 1929 - 1936. This busy mountain climber signed on the first page of the book - Ernst Pekar Wien Vienna member no. 10704 Gruppe Wien der Sektion Oesterr. Touristenklub des D.v. Oes.A. V. The diary of many many dozens of climbs in dozens of locales is written in German language in pencil. Initially our author writes in regular cursive script and then switches to the German fraktur in 1936. Perhaps this reflects the changes in the political scene. There are all together 240 cancellations from various Alpine lodgings and mountain tops giving the elevations and mountain some beautifully decorated with Edelweiss. Most of the stamps are in the 5 x 7" hardcover booklet as integral part of his meticulous entries some are on loose small sheets. The diary is rich in names of pathes meadows huts roads stations along the way mountain tops. The writer even kept times of how long every step of the way took. Some of the mountains he climbed - Grossvenediger 3660 m "allein am Gipfel Aussicht!! - Alone at the top View!!" Grossglockner 3792 m Schladminger Tauern Radstaetter Tauern Rax Hochkoenig Wechsel Hohe Wand Muntanitz Dolomites Italy etc. etc. etc. In 1934 he went to a mountainclimbing school. Ski trips. In between his entries are also signatures of fellow mountainclimbers. The entries abruplty end on June 7 1936 with a trip to the Hohe Veitsch. Mysteriously the very last cancellation in the book from the Oetscherhhaus 1418 m is dated in a different modern hand and dated 20.8.1963. All told there are 115 written pages 228 cancellation stamps of mountain lodgings in book some by groups like Oesterreichischer Touristenklub Oesterreichischer Gebirgsverein Deutscher Alpen-Verein Alpenvereinszweig Austria and more 4 small b&w photographs 2 pressed flowers Buschwindroeschen 3 printed pamphlets Ringwarte Sparbacherhuette Austria Nachrichten 12 cancellations on loose pieces of paper. ‎New Hampshire. Good. 1854. Cloth. This is an amazing diary that has so many wonderful qualities. Dated 1854 the original owner's name is James Likely. There is also the name Mary Likely written on the back inside cover. This is not really a handwritten diary of our gentleman's daily routine but actually a journal full of his thoughts on the universe religion our bodies animal life and other miscellaneous subjects. There are almost 100 pages of script and a few wonderful drawings too. The first part of the diary is all about the celestial universe; Jupiter Saturn the Sun the different stars and our Earth. He's drawn a picture of Saturn and also one of the earth and the orbit of the sun. It's so interesting to see someone's view about the universe over 150 years ago. Research suggests Mr. Likely is from New Hampshire from references made about "Tollage for crossing Windsor Bridge during the year ending May 1859". Here are snippets: "This book is intended to be the repository of Biblical subjects with their proofs and conclusions and astronomical calculations and experiments that being written in the front of this diary.The discovery of Herschell was in the year 1811. The pressure of air upon earth is 12048468800000000000 pounds or 5000 billions of tons. The sun is a million of times larger than earth and sends forth light at the rate of 2000000 miles a minute. The earth flies round its aces axis at the rate of 1000 an hour. Flies through space at the rate of 60000 miles an hour….Captain Flinders in one of his voyages saw in a stream which passed before him for an hour and half all covered with ____ the stream was from 50 to 80 yards deep and 300 yards or more bread broad taking his reckoning for it. It would amount to 151 millions and a half and another travels in a different direction seen much more on that….The star Lyra for example is supposed by Sir W. Herschel to be 32275000 miles in diameter or 38 times the diameter of the sun and….The earth is a globe whose diameter is nearly 8000 miles and it's circumference about 25000 and consequently it's surface contains nearly two hundred millions of square miles and….The light of the sun is equal to 6500 candles at a foot distance while the moon would be as one candle at 1 ½ feet Venus at 421 feet and Jupiter at 1320 feet that this immense luminary appears so small to our eyes in owing to it's vast distance…." There is so much more not just about the universe but also about the other topics. His handwriting is very beautiful and easy to read. Densely written and jam packed from May 1st 1873 through November 21st 1877 the writer details his work travels daily life friends and local events including births and deaths and his visits with associates. Besides working incredibly hard on his own spread farming ranching lumbering and other commerce buying and selling and he labors for others as well and mentions the names of all visitors and visits. A casual reading of this filled several hundred page blank book style diary will find a treasure trove of genealogy and history of the local area and we believe a closer reading by a local historian or collector will almost certainly provide the author's name. ‎Borden Hants Hampshire England. Good. 1934. Original Wraps. On offer is a handwritten notebook-style instruction manual as titled on the cover "Fencing Lessons Foil - Sabre - Epee". The inside front cover has a pastedown fully identifying the writer: "Serjeant T. Wells of the 1st BATTALION OXFORDSHIRE & BUCKINGHAMSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY. 19th Sept. to 13th Dec. 1934. Instructors Gartzen and Harkinson". An Index of the 67 page book shows that besides the lessons in the three sword types there are chapters on the Army Fencing Union Pitches and Arenas and Bayonet Team Competitions. We are led to believe that this book is also a manual for the Instructor trainee as most pages have three columns headed: Pupil Master Remarks. The remarks appear to be helpful hints for the Instructor in dealing with the pupil. There are a number of hand drawn illustrations including charts tables graphs and such plus there are quite a few little. 1.5" x 1" photographs which were cut from elsewhere and glued in as part of the lesson. In addition to the identification on the cover and inside front cover the back cover has Sjt. Wells handwritten address being we believe Bordon Hants Hampshire. Boards are cracked in the hinges and the netting shows but otherwise in very good shape. Provenance: From the library of a famed Hungarian fencing master instructor Olympian and coach. ‎CHARLES CITY IOWA EUROPE. Good. 1912. On offer is the handwritten travel diary of John G. Legel Jr. who is from Charles City Iowa. He sails for Europe on June 15th 1912 only two months after the sinking of the Titanic. John spends his summer touring Europe arriving back home on September 6th 1912. His diary contains almost 100 handwritten pages over 50 leaves and details his voyage over on the boat and all of his memorable events while in Europe and also the trip back. Here are snippets: Up too late for breakfast. Slept poorly. Passed three boats by 9:30 3 sails quite close. Land Africa 3 smokes sighted by 10:00. Land quite close to port side. 3 more boats there. Too thick to mention. Big rock in sight….Arrived at Gibraltar. Went ashore by the tender "Guille" of N.G.L. line. Saw a number of curio stores thick as can be. Sun very hot. Street venders of postcards newspapers fruit and flowers thick. Bot flowers and a little fruit. Also a N.Y. newspaper dated 6/20/12. Beat down the price of 2 bunches of flowers from 25 cents to 10 cents. Saw laces sold for less then half the prices first asked. Came aboard by tender at 5:30. Evening cool. Left Gibraltar at 8:30. Saw outline of opposite side of big rock. The pictures show the landward end. Too dark to see details. The lower half of the rock on the side we first saw was just covered with lights. Tried to get picture of a moor. He dodged across walk then held his hand up in front of his face. Moonlight very bright tonight. Phosphorescent lights back of boat have been very bright and numerous. ‎1906 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT LOG BOOK OF A DETROIT AREA MUSICIAN'S CLUB - P.R.O.S.T.‎

‎DETROIT MICHIGAN. Good. 1906. On offer is a very unique funny and rather curious handwritten log book from a musicians club beginning in 1906 and up to about 1915 but it was after their fifth anniversary that there was less writing and more ephemera. The theme was nautical and under the guise of characters in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. The members were all musicians from leading theatre orchestras. The club was started by Arthur Lelliot B.S. Tomlinson and James Thompson. Also 'aboard' were members of the Detroit Federation of Musicians and the Detroit Musicians Union. Two blank letter heads one from each union are folded up in the book along with a number of other ephemera pieces. The club was called P.R.O.S.T and there is a typed Constitution. The book is loaded with names of musicians from that era plus menus from all the major banquets and cruises. There are 5 or 6 pages of handwritten script of a play which they performed. There is a Katz and Jammers Kids cartoon we believe pasted on the front cover though it is rather rough and there is loss followed by a few more Katz and Jammers Kids in nautical situations pasted in. Dick Ransom was from Chicago Illinois; enlisted on 8/7/1862 as a private. On 8/29/1862 he mustered into Chicago Mercantile Light Artillery. He was discharged for disability on 3/24/1863. Specifics: Diary #1 1861 2.5 x 3.5 inches full year January 1st through December 31st 1861 120 pages of which approx. 250 days with entries recorded dark brown period ink very legible. Great war content and a number of remarks made in great excitement; Lincoln as President; death of Col. Ellsworth and Steven Douglas. Battle excitement and the rout of the federal army at the first battle of Bull Run at Manassas. Diary #2 1862 : 3 x 5 inches entries from Aug. 7th 1862 through Mar. 6th 1863. 29 pages brown period ink very legible. Cover reads " Dick Ransom mercantile Battery Chicago Artillary 100 Washington Street Chicago". Signed in ink in Dick Ransom's hand on first page; "Dick Ransom 100 Washington Street Chicago Ill." Also included: 3 wonderful cdv/tintype of Lucy Ransom. Dick speaks of his proposal for marriage to Lucy in his 1861 diary. First is a tintype/cdv format of Lucy backmark Chicago dated Aug 19th 1866 and signed on reverse in Dick's handin brown ink "Louie Perham 1866 Dick Ransom". Secondly mounted Gem Albuman photo of Lucy on cdv mount ca. 1865. Cdv is handcolored image of Lucy dated Jan 23rd 1868. The address book includes all of Dick's friends and family and many of Mercantile Battery mates including Sinclair Willard Gunlock and Medal of Honor winner James Dunne. 3 x 5 inches many pages of entries mouse chew on cover edges. The date of 1883 can be found on the fep. Brown ink inscriptions this book is an important genealogy record and helps to identify all the people referred to in the diaries. ‎NEAR TACOMA WASHINGTON WA. Good. 1941. Manuscript. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript 5-year diary of Gertrude Montaney wife of Louis P. Montaney. Gertrude writes a few 1941 entries but is much more dedicated in 1942 through the end of 1944. It appears Gertrude and Louis live near Tacoma and they mention Olympia Portland Forest Grove Eugene. She lived near a Black Lake and enjoyed fishing often listing her "catch of the day." She was quite the baker often making all manner of bread including dog bread gumdrop cookies cherry fudge and more. They also raised and ate rabbits upon occasion. Some of her activities included: churning sewing reading quilting playing checkers Red Cross work crocheting afghan making root beer and gardening. Here are a few quotes: Feb. 13 1941 "Married to Louis P. Montaney Thursday at our home on Black Lake by." May 13 1942 "Nice day sun not too bright. Finished ironing pressed some dresses & trousers. Did regular work. Caught trout 14 in. long & bass 11 inches long and 3 perch." And then as life often does suddenly Louis takes over the writing on Dec. 10 1944 "I got….to go get her & in returning we were run into & wrecked. We took Gertie to hospital badly hurt. fog." Then the next few entries predictably are quite sad as he writes of her demise on the 13th. There is a front inside cover notation that she passed away the date and that he was taking over writing the diary same last name. Included also with the diary are 7 b/w negatives which appear against the light to be of people at the lake. The diary ends January 4th 1945. The clasp is gone but the diary is in otherwise very good shape. Inscribed on the inside front cover are names and address of the author being the 'mrs' of Mr. and Mrs. Odean Hareid. It appears they are traveling in a convoy that includes the Grothe car and the Judges' car. Mrs H. is a super diarist detailing the legs of the journey stops along the way camp grounds problems; '2 min. outside of Valparaiso on Yellow Stone Trail - making a sharp turn our car struck a telephone post broke a wheel to pieces and bent bumpers - Odean the only one hurt getting a cut in the head' and even opinions: 'Rotten Maude driving' 'the ladies had a dandruff picnic went out in the snow - took some photos' 'Springfield Ohio. Doubletrack streetcar Interurban between all cities of any size.' 'Columbus saw some real nifty policemen in this town' 'Had to scold Maude for trying to read while we were driving. The Judge thinks this is real smart when he passes us going up a hill'. Mrs. H fills this notebook with verbatim conversations involving 4 or 5 people at times. Very interesting balance of sightseeing notes and the fun repartee of this eclectic groups of friends. Diary is intact and complete but the cover is chipped and tatty and the spine is loose and cracked but still together. ‎Preston Lancashire England Great Britain UK. Good. 1944. Decorative Cloth. On offer is a super handwritten manuscript diary written by Mary Redmayne who was a 'girl next door' average teenage girl during the Second World War in Preston Lancashire in the small town of Ashton on Ribble. She was a dedicated diarist purchasing her new diary on Feb. 19 1944 and filling it up to date from the beginning of January obviously she took notes each day because every day is full from the beginning of the year with small daily details of life and continuing to fill it to the maximum in neat beautifully legible printing for the next five years. During that time she went from being a typical school girl writing the classes are "swotting" and we suspect skipping a lot of classes too but being successful in her levels to becoming a teacher for very young children as well as a dancer painter and Guide leader. She seems to have had lots of family in Ashton and surrounding area and we believe hat her brother's name Leonard Redmayne is very common in the area going back centuries.It is wonderful to read an unromanticized account of daily life in Britain for a teenaged girl in the midst of war. There is mention of taking gas masks to school a plane down near Cadley C and her father being on Fire Watch regularly but the majority of entries do not mention the war and show that even in the midst of tragedy and terror life goes on. Mary loved going to movies and mentions many by name along with her opinion of them and often seemed to get in trouble with her teachers because she did not mince words. A typical teenager. Some of the places mentioned in this diary include: Haslam Park Bletchley Wigan Bishops Startford London Radwinter Manchester Great Eccleston Blackpool Goosenargh Inglewhite Longridge and Grimsargh. Some of the people mentioned in the diary are Stotts J Loftus Miss Matthews Mr Charles Greehalghs Mona Spud and Jean D Royles Mrs. Preston Dorothy Allen Mrs Bolton and Parkinsons. In addition as shown in the scans there is a list at the back of the diary of her friends whom she mentioned in the diary regularly using their initials. The best way to give you a sense of what this girl's life was like is to quote from the diary: Went back to school. B.B. was awfully pleased about Pre. Got bulls-eye. Had teeth outh. Dad made vow. Teeth started to bleed. Bled all night. Bit a cork. Went in taxi to dentists. He plugged tooth which was bleeding. Had a sleep. Borrowed books from Pat which I read all night. Fire in room. Bought stuff for patrol bag. Began to make it. Mother stuffed curtains. Began to knit socks out of RAF scarf. Had blancmange for tea. Stood on Harris steps to see King and Queen. Did not speak. Got new Sonata. Swotted Geog. New Dress. June Kalina talked about her engagement to a "Yank". Braitch in bad temper because late. Got to report. went to see "Madonna of the Seven Moons." VG. Knitted. Settled about second-hand books. Had lecture on "dangerous objects" Began to make a frock. Went to see "This is the Army." Dec. 24 Sirens went 5:30-6:30. Fly bombs. Thud. Went to church and SS. Edyth wearing new blue coat. Went to Grays. Mum made row about Uncle Albert. Went to Joyces. Relations there. Went to our classifying houses. Announcement at 3pm that hostilities had ceased. Went errands. Went bike ride round Ribbleton through town. Watched tennis. Watched victory procession of show people. Went on Humpty bikes. Played tennis on Stanley Park. Went to Ice Show. Watched celebrations near town hall. What is striking to me is how matter-of-fact she is talking about the bombs and lectures on "dangerous objects" which suggests mines and unexploded ordnance and then carries on in the next sentence talking about new dresses going to church and the mundane daily routines. It is clear that war was a part of life for her and that she was accustomed to it having grown up with it. Her brother Leonard was in France and wrote home about a French girl near the end of the war but came home a couple of times during the course of the war so I am not sure what he was up to. She mentions the death of Roosevelt and sees Mr Churchill on his visit to Preston in June. She takes piano lessons and we believe that she is also teaching piano by the end of the diary. The diary is in good condition though the first few pages of January are taped in and the binding of the book has separated from the spine. However the binding is attached firmly to the diary pages and all the pages are accounted for and apart from the taped pages are firmly attached to each other. The binding strap is attached and the clasp to hold the diary closed still works. On offer is the super 1866 handwritten manuscript diary of Kate Wood French of Indianapolis Indiana in Marion County immediately following the Civil War and in the thick of the Reconstruction Era. Kate is ideally placed to comment on the times as she is married to her adored husband Charlie a successful executive in an oil and mining firm and mother to their daughter "May" who was the love of her life. She married Charlie on May 28 1863 and their daughter was born on May 30 1865. Charlie was the Vice President of "International National Petroleum Mining Company" and they seemed to be quite well off financially. Here are snippets: " . We have entered upon another year. This year we have a dear little Babe to brighten our days. I a mother and Charlie a father Sweet names they are indeed to us . This evening after supper I went up home to sit awhile with pa. He is very sick tonight. We feel almost afraid to hope . Sad day for us all. This morning at 6 oclock dear Father breathed his last. The patient sufferer has gone to dwell evermore with his Saviour. Lent for us 2 oclock this morning. Pa's mind was clear to the very last. He spoke to and knew us all. His suffering was intense but he is now at rest will know no more pain or suffering but will live where all is happiness through eternity . How lonely we have all felt today and particularly poor mother but Charlie and I took the baby and spent the afternoon with mother as all of the friends have left. Can it be we will never hear his kind voice anymore nor see his pleasant smile. Ah! It is true . Charlie and I went to church this morning it did not seem possible that I should go to church and not see my kind Father on the steps to meet us as he always was but he was not there. This afternoon I got ready and commenced to walk down street but as luck would have it the kindest husband coming for me we took a delightful ride we did not get back till five . So cold and windy that the men have not been down street but have had a pleasant day reading and talking in the parlor. In the afternoon they walked over to the Arsenal this evening Bryon has been telling us of his imprisonment in "Andersonville Prison" . I got up early and went shopping wih mother. We did not get back till 3 oclock then I found Charlie waiting to take May and I riding. We went and had a nice ride all enjoyed it. Charlie has had workmen out fixing the pipes to the bathroom . My girl ironed the clothes today and then went up to mothers for some milk. Dr Thompson was here again this afternoon to vaccinate May as the first did not take. Charlie is delighted - is offered $350.00 for Fancy. After supper took a nice ride . Well today we have had our little pet Christened - May Wood French. It is a sweet name. There were three others besides ours. May acted so like a little lady that we were all delighted with her . This evening after supper we took a delightful ride in our little "Central Park Carriage" and so Baby "May" rode in it for the first time . After dinner we dressed May up so sweet and called at Mrs Smiths and Halb. Everyone who sees little Baby May on the street admires her a great deal . This afternoon the man put down our carpet a beautiful "tapestry brussels" in our bedroom. It is so pretty. Now we are going to have the furniture varnished and then it will be nice . We got up pretty early this morning as we had a considerable to do before we could start. I finished packing our trunk and Charlie went for a carriage. We started at 12 oclock we got into Lafayette at 4 pm. Stopped at Lahr House.We have all had enough of Delphi already so I think or rather hope we shall start back tomorrow - I went up to see Aunt Delia this afternoon. The rememberance of Dear Pa filled her mind and was too much for words he having been there so lately . Our darling little girl is one year old today and yet it seems but a few weeks since she was brought into existance. I did intend going down street and getting her a birthday present but Charlie brought her a beautiful doll as large almost as herself . Charlie came home early telling me that next Monday he and Capt. Smith would start for "Canada Oil Wells" its too bad but then it can't be helped . This beats us for what should Charlie do but have a chill and he was feeling extremely well. I can not imagine what caused it . Charlie feeling better but thinks he will not eat much so as to starve the chills . Charlie went down street this morning and brought home "Morgan" the handsomest horse with the exception of "Beauty" I ever saw. Then after supper C May and I took a nice ride in little Pheaton the entire rig the attraction of all . Charlie received word today that "Oil is struck" hurray for us . Oh! How our hearts ached this morning. May was very sick we were up from 2 1/2 till day-light but now we are happier for she is better . Charlie came home early and I had May dressed so sweetly so while supper was getting ready we took May and rode down street. The "observed of observers" why Because Baby May held the reins of fiery Morgan just as if she drove him . In the evening Charlie and I went to the "Opera" we are not partial to operatic singing but we went more to see the new Hall and people . My new girl came early this morning and Melia whom I have had working for me a year next month left for her home on the noon train. She has been an excellent girl and I thought a great deal of her . I have felt in rather a strange mood today been wondering if anyone loves me or not. I believe precious little May does. I know I had a Father who has gone to that bright shore loved me. I know he did. I am sometimes afraid that I am not a very lovable person. Well I don't know what to do to make myself any other way . Somehow or other today has been dreary enough for me and then too I feel in sort of wretched state and wonder either taking into consideration the peculiar feelings I have. God to Thee I look for strength to bear my pains and sufferings ." ‎Holland New York NY. Good. 1887. Softcover. On offer three diaries all belonging to Hattie Baker of Holland New York. This first diary represents the year 1887 when Hattie turns 21 and I she was very faithful when writing in her diariy. Once you start reading this personal memoir her amazing life story unfolds which only makes the reader want to know more about Hattie. Intertwined between the pages of her diary you'll find subtle hints little pieces to the puzzle that give our young woman a sense of mystery to her life. For example on October 8th 1887 she writes "This day will never be forgotten H & I".Or at one point in the later diary she has been corresponding with a Mr. Smith and in her diary she writes. "I reached my brink this morning wrote to Mr. Smith. Have a headache everything is so strange." and that's just the start. She's also quite the seamstress sewing dresses and jackets for many people. She travels attends plenty of social functions and in the last diary starts attending school college in Northfield. I'd also like to give you a brief description of a few more of the entries in Hattie's own words. "Made 9 badges for our society "The Willing Workers". Mr. Cades had a magic lantern show in the school house. In the evening saw a couple bidding each other good night. Mrs. Durse was hung at 12 O'clock today. Mrs. Coyne prophesized I was going to get married in less then a year. Went to the train and saw the President and his wife. Went to see the President in the evening. Finished Minnie's boating dress and my new red waist. I left at 4:45 for Fish Creek. Arrived in Rome between 7 & 8. Rained very hard. C.S.W. and I went on the creek rowing in the evening. Had a very nice time.Charles and I and Sara drove to Sylvan Beach this morning. Went on Lake rowing. Rode on roller coaster. Started for Edels. Enjoyed our trip very much. Mr. K and I went to Trenton Falls this afternoon. The falls were grand took supper at Moore's. Arrived at home 8:30 pm. Emma Anna Mr. K and I took a walk through the woods. Visited the spring by the factory. Had to climb in a tree for protection. Three against one is not fair. Got up at 7 O'clock for Thousand Island excursion. Enjoyed the ride on the river. Bought a handkerchief in Canada.The girls gave a surprise party. There were 30 present. Had a lovely time. Danced two sets with Mr. Kissner my first time."
