1859 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTER PRESENTING A SNAPSHOT OF LIFE IN A TOWN THAT NOW LONGER REMAINS DESCRIBING STORIES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM ONE SISTER STILL LIVING IN TOWN TO HER SISTER WHO HAS LEFT LIKE SO MANY OTHERS
GREENSBORO BANKSTON MISSISSIPPI MI USA 1859. On offer is a four page letter from L.S. Middleton to her sister from the town of Greensboro Mississippi. The letter is dated October 21 1859. The letter speaks of Ms. Middletons life in Greensboro recent goings on in town and her recent trips to a fair in Bankston Mississippi. It does me a power of good to hear from you she writes. I returned from Bankston today. I went there yesterday to the Fair nothing very interesting expected. I was reluctant to go. I was afraid of the ___ as usual I felt brave on my return. She goes on to speak of friends and family in her life relating small stories and anecdotes to her sister. Mr. M. is waiting to sell some cotton at the turnpike then is several trying to fix up for the pike. He thinks he will sell to Sam Morgan.; I have not heard from Pas in some time I have no idea what they are doing. Wall thinks he is nearly grown. He took supper at Mr. Howes some time ago with Mr. Larimore. Mrs. Larimore asked him for the money for his suppe. It annoyed him. From Ms. Middletons letter it can be seen that the town is already in decline. She speaks of people getting married and moving away stores closing and the general attitude of depression that the town seems to engender. Katherine Ayser married sometime ago. She left the next morning. I have not seen Martha Johnson in some time. She finishes the letter I believe I have written everything to you since you left that has happened I have tried to keep you up with the times and connected all the rest has written as that much throwed in. Your sister as ever. L.S. Middleton. The letter is four pages long. It is in good shape showing no rips or tears but a good bit of discoloration from age especially around the creases. The handwriting is in black ink slightly faded but still easily legible and readable. This is a fantastic document of a small town in decline shortly before the Civil War would break out and seal its fate. Neither Greensboro nor Bankston exist anymore in Mississippi making this letter an interesting document of daily life for a young woman in the Antebellum Deep South. Background: Greensboro was originally the county seat of Choctaw County. The town of Greensboro which was centrally located and Choctaw County was inhabited by settlers primarily from Alabama Georgia and South Carolina. The temporary courthouse and log jail were replaced in 1839 by a brick courthouse and jail. This courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1865 supposedly by an arsonist. Almost all of the early records were destroyed in the fire. Greensboro at one time consisted of several types of stores and shops saloons a livery stable a brick yard and a newspaper. Greensboro had a Methodist church as early as 1839 and a Baptist church was begun in 1846. The Greensboro Lodge No. 49 of Free and Accepted Masons was chartered in 1842. Greensboro had the reputation of a rough and lawless town many notorious criminals and murders were located there. John A. Murell a famed outlaw of the Natchez trace was tried and convicted of horse stealing but on being transported to Columbus MS for incarceration he killed his guard and escaped. The Edwards-Gray feud which grew out of the settlement of the estate of Edward Dewitt Edwards Jr. exploded in 1861. Three of the brothers William James and Robert of Mrs. Mary "Molly" Gray Edwards widow of the deceased shot and killed judge Edward D. Edwards Sr. and his son Luther Edwards. The Gray brothers were jailed however a mob stormed the jail shooting two and hanging the third. Political candidates frequently campaigned at Greensboro including in 1851 Jefferson Davis who was seeking the office of governor. Seven young men of Greensboro and Choctaw County rushed to enlist at the outbreak of the American Civil War. The first company organized was the Wig Fall Rifles company D 15th MS infantry C.S.A. This unit was formed in Greensboro in April 1861 and the Captain was William F. Brantley of Greensboro later to be one of the youngest confederate generals. In December 1864 federals raided the town and burned much of it.Greensboro which had already begun to deteriorate rapidly declined. 1797 TWO 2 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTERS FROM LOVING PARENTS WHO HAVE JUST RELOCATED TO WEST VIRGINIA TO THEIR DAUGHTER FROM WHOM THEY HAVE NOT HEARD FROM IN NUMEROUS YEARS
NEW FRANKFURT HARRISON CO. WEST VIRGINIA 1797. On offer is are two lovely and fascinating letters from a father and mother to their daughter detailing their situation mere weeks after moving to New Frankford Virginia. The letter is signed Moses Starr and Elizabeth Starr and addressed to their Dear Daughter. The first letter is dated November 17th 1797 and the second is dated December 23 1797. In the letters they describe their journey to their new home in West Virginia their home and their farm. They now live in New Frankfurt in Harrison County Simpsons Creek Eight Miles From Clarkburg. The first letter begins Dear Daughter we embrace this opportunity to wright to you informing thee that we are all in great haealth at present thanks bea to God for his tender Merceys to us ward from time to time. They write that they have we have had no letters from thee this two years.and have had no opertunity to send any. We long to see thee and hear from thee if thou art single write whether thou would incline to come upon and live with us we think of comeing Down within two years more; like wise let us know how our Relations are in them parts.The back of the letter is a short sermon like passage stating Dear child strive to ear and Love God who is able to Love the utmost oall that come to him through Jesus Christ the Redeeme of lost Man. The next letter begins with them writing that they have received her last letter which gave us some cause to rejoice of hearing from our relations in general but gave us concern of mind for the loss of Nelly Starr and the disolate state of Uncle Joseph. They then remark on the their life in what is now West Virginia. Thy mother was braught to be of a daughter the Eleventh of last month wich we call Polly. They speak of their journey to Virginia taking two weeks from when they left their home. The farming has been good a well reaping 200 bushals of Sound Corn and 150 bushals of Oats with a trifel of buck wheat. I have 20 acres of wheat and Ry in the ground this fall. The letter ends with the usual pleasantries and again is signed by Moses and Elizabeth Starr. The two letters are in fair shape both having a fair share of rips tears and discoloration. The first letter has some moth damage that affects the readability of a sentence or two. The second letter has its tears along the creases and edges but it does not affect the content at all. Neither does the discoloration on either letter though it is very noticeable it does not block out any words. The ink on both letters has faded the first more than the second but both letters are fairly easy to read throughout. These letters are an interesting little snapshot of a family life in 1790s Virginia representing a change in a brand new America and hope for a new setting in this burgeoning nation. 1861 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTER DETAILING TIME SPENT IN A GROWING MID-19th CENTURY TORONTO REMARKING ON ITS PEOPLE FASHION AND LANDMARKS
TORONTO ONTARIO CANADA 1861. On offer is a remarkable letter from a loving husband to his wife written from a man travelling in Toronto back to his wife in England. The letter is a fascinating snapshot of a foreigner in Toronto in the mid-19th century. Obviously far from home the sender Mr. Hugh Smith finds the city beautiful and amazing and shares it ecstatically with his wife. The letter however begins on a somber note. You have no doubtedly before this time read a letter from George informing you of your fathers death. He suffered greatly he explains of an ulceration of the stomach and was miserable for a day before his death.He is in the cemetery in the city - a tombstone was put up yesterday upon his grave. The letter then makes a quick turn. I am in great health and I feel as if the journey has done me a great deal of good. Hugh then describes the Toronto he currently inhabits. The splendid affair of a devotion to the cultivation of fruit trees and the University where he saw a great collection of such quadrupeds four foot animals. He finds Toronto to be a beautiful and interesting city. Then the letter focuses on the women in the city and the fashion that Mr. Smith finds so curious including bonnets of undescribable shapes and veils that reach in some cases down to the nose. Mr. Smith finds the shapes colors and patterns of the fashion to be striking and unusual. Finally Mr. Smith wraps up with pleasantries to his loving wife and children and signs the letter your corny husband Hugh Smith. The letter is a great example of how Toronto was seen through foreign eyes in the mid-19th century and would make a great part of a collection on the growing metropolitan city. The letter is in good condition showing minimal wear or discoloration. There are a few small tears and spots of discoloration along the creases. There is a bit more noticeable discoloration on the back page but it does not affect the legibility of the writing. Any tears do not affect the structural integrity of the letter which is still held together very well. The handwriting is legible throughout in unfaded black ink. The letter is four pages long. 1956 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN RETROSPECTIVE JOURNAL DETAILING THE EXCITING AND GRIPPING EVENTS OF OPERATION MUSKETEER AN ANGLO-FRENCH PLAN TO CRIPPLE THE EGYPTIAN AIR FORCE DURING THE SUEZ CRISIS
SUEZ CANAL ZONE SINAI PENINSULA 1956. On offer are a number of exceptional documents directly related to Operation Musketeer an Anglo-French plan for invasion during the Suez Crisis of 1956. They include a 17 page handwritten diary of a National Servicemen Guy Smith onboard the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle the center of the Mediterranean Fleet on standby in case of invasion. There are also two letters from much more recently only one is dated on 2011. The first letter is from the wife of the Mr. Smith explaining a bit more about the person behind the diary. The other is from a man who was onboard the HMS Dalrymple also part of the Fleet in the Operation. The 17 page diary is titled An Extensive Signal Exercise Or Operation Musketeer and was written by a National Serviceman named Guy Smith. It begins The fleet started to leave Grand Harbor Malta at 0830 Monday the 29th of October 1956. He mentions that the Eagle was the flagship of the fleet carrying the flag of Vice Admiral Power. Immediately disaster struck the flagship as a wire holding an aircraft to the flight deck broke and the aircraft was dragged overboard sinking the ship and almost killing the pilot. He mentions the feeling onboard the ship as it headed towards the Suez Canal: .the Captain announced that Israel had attacked Egypt and her troops were within seventy miles of the Suez Canal. The Navy he said must be prepared to act at a moment's notice. The diary also explains the plan of Operation Musketeer: The first was the complete destruction of the Egyptian air force this was expected to take 48 hours and then stage two the actual occupation of the Canal Zone could proceed. The next few pages go into very specific detail about how the two stages would proceed and a delight to read for anyone interested in tactics of post WW2 warfare. On November 1st an air offensive begins. The diary again goes into very detailed explanations of the air strikes: During the day's operations the ship had steamed 220 miles flew 114 sorties 75 strikes ten enemy aircraft destroyed 17 damaged a radar station and many tanks and vehicles destroyed. Ammunition expended included 22 of 1000 lb bombs 32 of 500 lb bombs 232 armor piercing rockets 15000 rounds of 20mm at the loss of one aircraft. The diary continues in its details about the operation until the ceasefire on November 6th. The diary finishes with the author explaining the importance of the operation to the Royal Navy. Finally the last page contains a list of The Anglo-French Naval Force off Suez not including launching ships and craft and troop ships. The list includes the name of the aircraft carriers destroyers battleships paring class ships frigates cruisers fast minelayers and fleet auxiliaries who participated in the operation. The letter by his wife states that he was a National Servicemen on board Eagle and that at the time of Operation Musketeer he was the Admirals State Board Keeper / Messenger. She writes that as with so many National Servicemen they were some of the best years of his life and I am only sorry that he is no longer here to tell the tale. The other letter by Mike Cross states that he was a young A.B. Able Seaman on the HMS Dalrymple one of the last ships to leave Malta for the Suez Canal. He also states that the ship was flying the UN flag so they gave us overalls and a beret and did not look like he normally did while on duty. The three documents are all in good or very good shape. The diary has some slight discoloration and small tears on the edges but nothing that affects its structure or legibility. All three letters are written in pen and easily readable throughout. The diary is undated but obviously is older than the other two letters. This is a fantastic small archive for those interested in secret operations of war the Suez Canal Crisis that defined a region for many years to come or the intimate details of modern warfare post World War 2. Background: Operation Musketeer French: Opération Mousquetaire was the Anglo-French plan for the invasion of the Suez canal zone to capture the Suez Canal during the Suez Crisis in 1956. Israel which invaded the Sinai peninsula had the additional objectives of opening the Straits of Tiran and halting fedayeen incursions into Israel. The Anglo-French military operation was originally planned for early September but the necessity of coordination with Israel delayed it until early November. When the United States threatened to devalue the British currency the Pound Sterling the British cabinet was divided. Prime Minister Sir Anthony Eden called a ceasefire without Israeli or French officials being notified. Launched without a clear aim other than revenge with the abandonment of international diplomacy Operation Musketeer was a failure in strategic terms. By mischance it covered the Soviet Union's military intervention in Hungary on 4 November. On this issue and more generally on the principle of premature military action against Egypt the operation divided public opinion in the UK. It demonstrated the limitations of the UK's military capacity and exposed errors in several staff functions notably intelligence and movement control. Tactically successful both in the sea and airborne assaults and the subsequent brief occupation it was undertaken on the margin of capability. It was the last venture of its kind. Good. On offer is a significant original manuscript relic of Pennsylvania state history dated City of Washington January 20 1802 a mere 27 or so years after the first and second Continental Congresses in 1774 and 1775 and 15 years after Statehood. Handwritten by John Jenkins to the renowned Colonel John Jenkins b.1751 the author's father or brother most likely. The letter reads in part "

I have given out a number of our coppays of our petition likely regarding the Compromise Act of 1799 to the members of Congress so as to give them a fair understanding of the subject one of the members from Pennsylvania informed me in conversation that they that is the members from Pennsylvania would oppose the petition as it would destroy the Scranton ___." On the reverse side it is stamped with "WASH'N CITY" and "JAN 3" along with "PAID" addressed to Col. John Jenkins Luzerne County Pennsylvania. Another Jenkins name in addition to John is written at the bottom of the page left B. ___Jenkins. Local historians and researchers will no doubt have little problem sorting out the authorship and relationship of the three Jenkins' who are named. HISTORICAL NOTES: from the book WILD YANKEES: Compromise of 1799 "In the spring of 1799 Pennsylvania made the first in a series of moves that would ultimately resolve land disputes in an around the Wyoming Valley. On April 4 the state assembly passed the Compromise Act which allowed settlers that held Connecticut deeds that predate the Trenton Decree to obtain Pennsylvania titles to their lands. The legislation established a three-man-commission empowered to assess the legitimacy of settlers' claims survey their tracts and ascertain their value. Settlers who had their Connecticut deeds confirmed by the commissioners had to pay depending on the value of their farms between eight cents to two dollars per acre in eight annual instalments. The proceeds from these sales went toward defraying the cost of compensating Pennsylvania claimants who lost property to Connecticut settlers. As with the Confirming Act of 1787 the new law encouraged Connecticut claimants holding deeds issued before 1783 to move toward reconciliation with the state and to turn their backs of settlers who held titles issued after the Trenton Decree. After some initial hesitation the lure of secure titles at low prices assured the act's acceptance among Yankee settlers in the fifteen Susquehannah Company towns established before the Trenton Decree. These settlements covered the Wyoming Valley and adjacent lands
." BIO NOTES: From one online source: "Col. John Jenkins was the son of John Jenkins a magistrate and surveyor. Responsive to the first whisper of independence the people of the valley assembled in town meeting to proclaim their hearty approval of the movement. The presiding officer at that meeting was Col. Jenkins; he was moderator and in common with the other patriots assembled devoted their lives and their sacred honor to the great cause of their fellow-man. Of that meeting and its resolves in behalf of liberty Hon. Charles Miner has well said: "I would rather have those patriotic votes to show as the work of an ancestor of mine than the proudest patent of nobility ever granted by a king." Col. John Jenkins was appointed tax collector but was enrolled for military duty and was actively employed from first to last. He served the people with ability and fidelity in the Connecticut general assembly when this was Westmoreland county. His neat and accurate records of surveys from Wilkes-Barre extending a considerable distance into New York are the never-failing authority of civil engineers to this day. He was a democrat and nearly worshiped his ideal Thomas Jefferson while his friend and much a close companion in all those times that tried men's souls Col. John Franklin was an enthusiastic federalist. Here their political lines parted but on the great question of liberty and human rights they were as the steel and magnet. Of his capture while on a scouting expedition near Wyalusing has been told on a preceding page. After a long and cruel captivity he returned and was the first to bring positive information of the invasion. The joy of the people at his safe return was turned to sudden gloom by the cloud then seen to be gathering in the north. He had been only recently married when captured. The 13¼" by 8" letter is missing a 1¾ by 1¼ inch square at the bottom middle section and has another ½" square almost halfway down center. Large section directly above the larger square is vulnerable to coming out in an "l" shape of 2½ by 1½". Several tears small holes along 2nd from bottom fold line largely on fold line. The outside edges are chipped and a dog ear. Yellowing foxing and some grime as well as the occasional random spot or speck/stray mark. Overall G-. Good-. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. <p>Hand-drawing Chinese propaganda poster: "Holding highly the flags of Maoism Thought to eliminate leptospirosis thoroughly." 1971. 89cm x 62cm. All of the painting and red Chinese characters are hand-drawing only the below black Chinese characters were typed on a paper and then adhered to the painting. Have slight fold which probably can be recovered because the fold is formed by whole put together with others.</p><p>The soldier worker and peasant are holding a red books with title "Maoism Thought" . The three banners are captioned with "Ready for Battle Ready for Famine For People" "Long Live For the Victory of the hygienism Route of Chairman Mao’s Proletariat Revolution" and "Put the emphasis of the work of hygienism and Health into Rural Area" respectively. The two plates are captioned with "Must Demolish thoroughly the remaining toxin of the hygienism Route of Anti-revolutionary Revisionism" and "Must eliminate leptospirosis thoroughly " respectively.</p><p>At the bottom the adhered small paper was typed "printed by Revolutionary Committee of Epidemic Prevention of Yunnan Province printed in June 1971" so it is the original hand-drawing poster for printing in 1971 but do not know if its printed counterpart had been publised later because as far as I know I have not seen its printed counterpart.</p>

Among his remarkable woodblocks is a multi-block large fold-out print depicting his fantasy perfect Passover one in which he could invite anyone living or dead to partake. Curiously he is not in the scene but is shows Golda Meir and Anwar Sadat Gandhi and Elijah Lincoln and Martin Luther King Rabbi Hillel and Queen Victoria Maimonides and Betty Williams. There are 110 woodcuts in the text 10 smaller mounted folding plates and 9 larger mounted folding plates. This is copy no. 10 of the edition which is limited to only 50 copies signed by the artist Solomon. An absorbing presentation much of it bi-lingual of this timeless prayer. 1759 RARE AND EXCEPTIONALLY UNIQUE HANDWRITTEN ACCOUNT OF THE TRIAL AND SUBSEQUENT PUNISHMENT OF AN AMERICAN DRAFT DODGER UNWILLING TO FIGHT FOR THE BRITISH IN THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR
MANSFIELD WINDHAM COUNTY CONNECTICUT COLONY 1759. On offer is an extraordinary historical document of pre-Independence America and the French and Indian War which pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France with both sides supported by military units from their parent countries and American Indian allies. The document in question is two and a half pages dated 1759 concerning the legal case of a man named Jesse Dimmick of Mansfield Windham County Connecticut a member of the 10th Company Connecticut Militia who refused to accompany the combined Expedition of British Regular and American Militia for the purpose of invading Canada during the French and Indian War. The letter is sent from attorney to our Svrn Lord the King for sd Country named Jedediah Elderkin to Samuel Gray Esq. one of his majestys justices for ye peace for Windham County Conn. The letter begins with some background to the desertion General Assembly of ye Coloney of Connecticut at their Sessions held in New Haven in March last did resolve and order to Raise five thousand troops in sd Colony to Joyne his majestys Regular troops in North America & in junction with them to invade Canada and Carry war into the hart of the Enemies Country in pursuance to his majestys orders and Instructions.Col. Dyar having recd sd orders did then immediately grant his proper warrant under his hand to Joseph Stors of Mansfield Capt of the 10th military Companey in sd 5th Regiment him ordering to Impress or Detach of the Soldiers under his command or those that ware with in the Limits of sd Companey to able bodied effective men to go in sd expedition. The letter than discusses the case of Mr. Dimmick. .but sd Jesse Dimmick not regarding the Laws and Constitution of sd Coloney to sd detachment & order did neglect and refuse to joyne sd company under sd Major Glass or in any wise to go in sd expedition which neglect and refusal of sd Dimmick is against the peace of ye King his crown & dignity and contrary to the Laws of this Coloney in such case made & provided given under my hand in Windham County February 27th day anno domine 1759 & in the 32 year of his majestys raign Jedediah Elderkin The next page contain more details of the case. .you are hereby Commanded forthwith to arrest sd body of the with named Jesse Dimmick and him have forth with before Amon Babcock Esq one of his majestys justices of sd peace for sd County of Windham. this part is dated March 29th 1759 by Samuel Gray Justice of sd peace. The last part of the document dated the 17th day of April 1759 concerns the trail of Mr. Dimmick who has been arrested and brought before the justice of the peace where Dimmick pleads not guilty to the charges against him. Dimmick appeard in sundry Guidances all which were thoroughly examinned by this court & Dimmick way heard in his defense & this court having examined sd J. The very last page contains a list of costs associated in pounds shillings and pence Costs abound to Mr. Nebon £1-6-0; Court fees £0-2-0; the total cost of the trail for Dimmick appears to be £2 1 shilling and six pence before his court appointed penalty of 20 pounds for refusing to join the service. The document is in folio format measuring 13 x 8 inches dated 1759 in very good clean and legible condition. The script can at times be difficult to decipher due to the dated language and spelling of the era but rewards a close look both the for the interesting facts of the case as well as the wider military and historical significance of these report in the decades prior to American Independence when it was still a British colony. There is no description of why Dimmick chooses not to join the militia but it could be because of a belief in an independent America. This could be why he pleads not guilty to charges he is clearly guilty of. Background: The French and Indian War 175463 comprised the North American theater of the worldwide Seven Years' War of 175463. The war pitted the colonies of British America against those of New France with both sides supported by military units from their parent countries of Great Britain and France as well as by American Indian allies. Jesse Dimmick was born between 1725 and 1726 and died on the 10th of January 1771. He married Rachel Kidder on May 19 1751 in Dudley Massachusetts. Jedediah Elderkin was born in Norwich Connecticut in 1717. Col. Elderkin and Col. Dyer were the leading lawyers in Eastern Connecticut. Jedidiah Elderkin was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1756 and chosen a member of the General Assembly from Windham in the spring of 1751 and repeatedly afterwards until 1785. FORT SANDERS KNOXVILLE TN TENNESSEE 1906. On offer is a letter from a Mr. A.R. Shouse to a Mr. Lawrence Mossby concerning the hiring of of Mr. Shouse to charter and pilot a ship to haul cargo for Mr. Mossby. The letter is written from Fort Sanders spelled Saunders in Tennessee and was written in 1906. The ship appears to be hauling cargo to Port-aux-Basque in Newfoundland. Mr. Shouse answers a number of questions posed by Mr. Mossby in his last letter giving 9 answers to his questions. It seems Mr. Shouse is a ship captain being recruited by Mr. Mossby to pilot a ship that he has chartered. Your letter of March 6th which I told you of my last I now endeavour to answer in detail.I have answered the recent and will be wary of most on the 15th of June. Answer 2. The price is $200. Could not do better. Answer 3. According to the account I have heard she is comfortable roomy and clean. The letter proceeds in this form seeming to disagree with the price Mr. Mossby wants to pay for his ship Vessel is about 35 tons about 15 tons larger than and as a vessel of 35 tons cannot be had at a price unless for a longer time. I chartered her for one 1/2 months. He goes on to say Answer 5. I will settle the price when you come I will not be too hard on you. He also says he will arrange the men to work on the crew. As you have altered your plan coming to Port au Basque I will not take any men from here. We can get them where we to and returning here will pick up our men here thus saving expense. I will have them June 3rd for Port au Basque as I little time to look after the vessel as I have not seen her having accepted her on recommendation. The men I take from here will get $2.00 a day. The Captain provisions his crew as you desired. He then writes discouraging Mr. Mossby from bringing his canoe on board as my boat will do and if we need one.we can have one. I am arranging to save expense but as far as the canoe is concerned it is certainly a matter of your own choice. The letter is one double-sided page long handwritten in black ink. The writing is legible but the script can be a bit difficult at times to decipher. The letter shows signs of wear and there is some small discoloration around the folded crease marks. ENGLAND BRITAIN UK UNITED KINGDOM 1947. On offer is an exemplary and fascinating original manuscript of a play entitled Brandts Drift written by Robert Scurfield while a POW in World War 2. According to the book The London Stage 1940-1949: A Calendar of Productions Performers and Personnel the play would eventually be performed at the Gateway Theatre in London on January 6th 1948. The title page reads as such BRANDTS DRIFT ¦A Romance of the War in South Africa ¦ by ¦ ROBERT SCURFIELD ¦ Dramatis Personae There is then a breakdown of the eight main characters of the play and then the setting which reads The action of the play takes place in the Brandt's kitchen at Brandts Drift a farmhouse near the Orange Free State frontier of Cape Colony in February 1900 - late summer in those latitudes. It is dated June - July 1947. This seems to be the final version of the manuscript as there are no edits or writing on the pages as might be usual for a non-final manuscript. The last page of the play includes a glossary of South Africa in alphabetical order terms used in the play. These terms include: Africander - One born in South Africa of Dutch descent; now spelt Afrikaner ; Cronje - The Boers most eminent general ; Ja hucht! - an untranslatable ejaculation; Zarps - Z.A.R.P. - Zuid Afrikansche Republike Police: the Johannesburg police-force a semi-military all-nations formation. There are 38 terms in this glossary. The manuscript is still in very good condition with only the brown paper cover showing signs of wear and age. It is made up of light green typescript pages and is 73 single-sided pages long. The manuscript seems to be hand stitched together possibly by Scurfield himself in a simple 3-hole pamphlet stitch that is easily noticeable on the front and back cover. The title BRANDTS DRIFT BY ROBERT SCURFIELD is handwritten in thick black ink also possibly by Scurfield himself. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Manuscript. unknown

Europe 1920. On offer is an original massive archive of 1000 of formulas recipes and chemical breakdowns for fragrances and related cosmetic products such as perfumes scented soaps colognes toilet water face cream shaving soap . The archive is comprised of ten 9 x 7 inch binders filled with up to 200 pages each and one index binder making for as many as 1500 or more pages filled with specifics for creating a host of fragrance and fragrance products. The recipes were compiled from early to mid 1900s and then secreted to a safety deposit box until recently rediscovered a few years ago attesting to the importance and value placed on these chemical formulae. The mostly handwritten recipes include many exclusive products for famous perfume shops in major cities all over the world including North and South America: Columbia Peru Havana New York etc. Many formulas show the name and location of special shops which have private labels and scents. Research and anecdotal information leads us to believe that these recipes were created by an unknown top Jewish chemist who brought these out of Europe just prior to World War II. While the chemist is unknown we are certain in depth research and careful scrutiny of the names mentioned may yield enough clues to identify the creator of this precious archive. Overall G.
