New York: The Cotton Club c.1930. FROM THE ORIGINAL COTTON CLUB Small bifolium opens 210 x 184 mm of light textured card pictorial front and rear panels printed in red and black small illustrations through the text. Just a little rubbed but overall very good. Highly appealing menu for the legendary original Harlem Cotton Club. Inevitable stereotypical artwork of the period "bamboo" lettering and a sharply dressed minstrel-like figure in a high hat accompanied by four scantily-clad "high yellow"chorines. The menu offers Chinese or American options while only non-alcoholic beverages are offered so a date before the repeal of the Volstead Act in 1933 would seem most likely. Other examples have been seen with a list of alcohol-free mixed drinks and cups on the rear panel. The Cotton Club moved from the Lenox Ave. address in 1935. Vail The Norman R. Slugs' in the Far East - coming events for January and February 1971.
New York: Slugs' 1971. Original cardstock poster letter-press on a striking green 558 x 357 mm. Some slight edgewear neatly annotated recto with the year but overall in very good condition. Record of a superb series of residencies at notorious New York jazz club Slugs' in the Far East. Donald Byrd is scheduled from 12-17 January Leon Thomas 19-24 Elvin Jones 26-31 Lee Morgan 2-7 February and McCoy Tyner 9-14. Opening its doors on 242 East 3rd Street in 1964 the club began as a neighbourhood bar known as Slugs' Saloon the location having previously been home to a Ukrainian restaurant and bar. By early 1965 despite having a capacity of just around 100 people it began to morph into one of the key jazz clubs of the city as local musicians convinced the owners Robert Schoenholt and Jerry Schultz to feature live music; in time it would come to rival the Five Spot Café as one of the top jazz spots in the East Village. Just a year later in the early hours of the morning of 19 February 1972 Lee Morgan was shot to death by his common-law wife Helen More at Slugs'. The club closed later that year. Spine sunned a few marks to back cover peripheral paper toning throughout; with the pocket for vinyl records at the end the discs not present in this copy but they are rarely encountered. First edition first printing only reissued in English in a revised edition in 2005. Presentation copy from photographer William Claxton to the actor and acknowledged jazz fan Robert Mitchum inscribed on the half-title: "For Bob Mitchum a Swinger! William Claxton Feb. 1962" and with the library stamps stating "From the Estate of Robert Mitchum Santa Barbara California". A fascinating record in words and pictures of a coast-to-coast tour undertaken by the influential German broadcaster Joachim Berendt and leading jazz photographer William Claxton. Berendt's radio show "Jazztime Baden-Baden" pioneered the popularisation of jazz in post-war Germany. Claxton is the man behind the lens behind some iconic jazz images. Mitchum himself almost invented Hollywood "cool" in some of the most memorable screen performances from the 40s through to the 60s. What is not widely known is that he also had a career in music releasing two vocal albums: Calypso - is like so. Capitol 1957 and That Man Robert Mitchum. Sings Monument 1967 the latter including "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" that peaked at number 9 in the country charts and was also covered by fellow Consul of Cool Dean Martin. Somewhat rubbed particularly so at the extremities spine chipping head and tail corners eroded paste-action browning at the front endpapers gutter and margins quite heavy even browning throughout remains very good. First Russian edition. This detailed overview of the trends in jazz current in the late 60s - early 70s was written in Czech by noted jazz critic LubomÃr Doružka 1924-1970 and published by the state-run record label Supraphone in 1970 and it would appear that a copy was brought to the USSR and translated in Belarus soon after that. At the time most of the music referred to in the text was impossible to hear in USSR except on illicitly issued vinyl. Doružka was well-acquainted with Soviet jazz scene and his work had considerable impact in samizdat in Iron Curtain countries. Belarus could be considered one of the jazz centres of the Soviet Union. In 1939 Polish Jewish jazzman Eddie Rosner 1910-1976 - referred to as "The Polish Harry James" and "The White Louis Armstrong" - a member of the legendary Weintraub's Syncopators who provided the music for von Sternberg's Blue Angel and widely recognised as one of the foremost trumpeters in Europe fled the Nazis and established a jazz orchestra - Belostok Jazz - with the official backing of the secretary of the Belorussian communist party Panteleimon Ponomarenko. The band became the State Jazz Orchestra and toured extensively in Russia. However at the end of the war Rosner began to draw unfavourable attention and was arrested for "anti-Soviet" treason as he tried to escape across the border cf. Tarr East Meets West: The Russian Trumpet Tradition from the Time of Peter the Great. Rosner was convicted and spent the next 10 years in the gulag at Magadan in the Soviet Far East. Nonetheless Minsk became established as unofficial jazz capital of the Soviet Union when Duke Ellington made his month-long tour of the USSR in 1971 he played 8 concerts in town drawing people "a lot of them musicians Â… all the way from Riga Latvia Â… a distance of 700 or more miles Â… Baritone saxist Harry Carney declared 'The people were so emotional. just about everywhere we played we had to do encores of 30-45 minutes. They wouldn't let us off the stage" Jet 2 December 1971 p.56. Interesting insight into the Soviet Union's ambiguous relationship with jazz. The original Czech edition can be traced to some 6 institutions internationally - the Czech National Library and State Reserve Library NYPL University of Toronto National Library of Poland and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin this Russian samizdat version appears to be unrecorded.
