ill., br. Trentaquattro interviste che coprono l'intero arco della carriera di Steve Lacy, dal 1959 al 2004, apparse in riviste di jazz americane ed europee ma anche inedite, per illustrare la straordinaria evoluzione della carriera e del suo pensiero musicale. Completano il volume una sezione di scritti autobiografici e artistici con vari inediti - riprodotti nella nitida calligrafia dello stesso sassofonista - le partiture autografe di tre canzoni su testi poetici, una discografia consigliata e molte foto storiche. Se oggi il sax soprano è onnipresente sui palchi del jazz lo si deve alla curiosità musicale di Steve Lacy, il cui esempio spinse Coltrane a imbracciare il sax dritto. Ispirato da Sidney Bechet, Lacy ha suonato giovanissimo a New York con i grandi del jazz tradizionale come Rex Stewart e Henry "Red" Allen. Dopo l'incontro con Cecil Taylor e Thelonious Monk, si dedica a sviluppare la propria musica continuando a collaborare con una vasta gamma di musicisti, dal trombonista Roswell Rudd all'arrangiatore Gil Evans da Mal Waldron e George Lewis a Misha Mengelberg, Evan Parker, Joelle Léandre e Alexander von Schlippenbach.
