br. "Ho ascoltato il mio lavoro almeno una volta: quando l'ho scritto". Questa affermazione di Arnold Schönberg illustra bene la sua idea che l'esecutore serva solo a rendere la musica comprensibile per un pubblico tanto sfortunato da essere incapace di leggere le note a vista. In una simile prospettiva ogni esecuzione è una forma di corruzione rispetto all'ideale purezza dell'opera in sé. Come è emersa questa coincidenza fra partitura testuale e "vera" musica? E con quali conseguenze? Come è stato possibile che un caso limite di forma musicale, l'opera scritta, sia arrivato a costituire il paradigma con cui si pensa la musica in generale? Secondo Sparti, la tradizione europea, diversamente da quella di origine africana, non ha saputo cogliere nell'eccitazione di quella massa vibrante che è il corpo umano la fonte primaria dell'espressività musicale. Il jazz, nel quale opera ed esecutore coincidono, fa ascoltare una musica corporea "suonata" da pelle, bocca, lingua, labbra, braccia, torace, mani. Il jazzista valorizza così la funzione più nuda del linguaggio: "respiro sonoro che esce dalla carne".

Emerso dal formidabile calderone espressivo della Chicago nera degli anni Sessanta, il gruppo si è affermato in una Parigi che era stata appena attraversata dai fermenti del Sessantotto e ha poi trionfalmente conquistato il pubblico di tutti i continenti. In questo volume Paul Steinbeck esplora nei dettagli la storia dell'Art Ensemble of Chicago. Unendo l'analisi musicale alla ricerca storica, propone un'approfondita interpretazione che ne lega insieme tutte le innovazioni: i diversi modelli d'improvvisazione, l'ampio repertorio di composizioni, la dimensione intermediale e quel concetto cooperativo di interazione sociale che ha permesso al gruppo di attraversare con successo i decenni.
