Questo libro intende superare gli schemi fino ad ora utilizzati, proponendo un'analisi che parta dalla canzone come forma espressiva a sé, per poi restringere progressivamente il campo. Il primo passo è misurare le distanze e le contiguità della canzone con le altre modalità di espressione artistica, in primis la poesia e il video. Poi analizzare le strutture testuali dei macro-generi della canzone italiana: la canzone di largo consumo, il rap, la canzone sanremese e la canzone d'autore. È partendo da questa cornice che l'autore si cala nel mondo di Fabrizio De André. E formula, dopo un'attenta analisi, una tesi decisamente inedita. De André non è un poeta, come molti spesso impropriamente hanno affermato. È piuttosto un "filosofo". De André può e deve essere analizzato da un punto di vista intellettuale. Nasce da qui l'accostamento con il filosofo francese Michel Foucault.

Il televisivo bianco e nero di quella sequenza lontana mezzo secolo è l'iconico ritratto di Lucio Dalla quando, dopo sette anni di insuccessi e umiliazioni, catapulta sul grande pubblico il brano che lo incorona vincitore morale del Festival di Sanremo 1971. Un testo coraggioso uscito dalla penna dell'illustratrice di fiabe Paola Pallottino. La canzone s'intitola "Gesubambino" ma cala la mannaia della censura e diventa "4/3/1943", la data di nascita di Dalla. La strana coppia di autori è lanciata, col primo posto in classifica e nuovi capolavori: "Il gigante e la bambina", "Un uomo come me" e "Anna Bellanna". In tutto otto canzoni pubblicate, l'equivalente di un ideale long playing. Ma c'è un nono brano, rimasto nel cassetto. S'intitola "La ragazza e l'eremita" e viene qui svelato insieme a molti aneddoti e retroscena grazie alle testimonianze - oltre che di Paola Pallottino, Gianni Morandi e Pupi Avati - di Gino Paoli, Renzo Arbore, Ron, Maurizio Vandelli, Maurizio De Angelis, Vince Tempera, Angelo Branduardi, Armando Franceschini, del domenicano Bernardo Boschi (padre spirituale di Lucio) e di Umberto "Tobia" Righi, factotum, uomo di fiducia e padre putativo del cantautore bolognese. Il libro racconta un periodo mai esplorato prima della carriera di Dalla, a partire dal decisivo sodalizio con Paola Pallottino che ha aperto la strada alla successiva collaborazione di Lucio con il poeta Roberto Roversi. Esperienze che hanno entrambe forgiato il geniale stile del Dalla cantautore, decollato nel 1977 con "Come è profondo il mare". Prefazione di Pupi Avati. Introduzione di Gianni Morandi.
