In questo secondo e conclusivo volume del grande affresco biografico dedicato a J.S.Bach, sono esaminate la vita e l'opera del Kantor negli anni di Lipsia (dal 1723 alla morte, nel 1750): a un ampio quadro sull'ambiente sociale e culturale della città segue l'esposizione minuziosa dei fatti biografici corredata da un vasto apparato di documenti. La produzione viene esaminata secondo un metodo che partendo dalla divisione dei generi considera le singole opere tenendo presenti tanto le coordinate cronologiche quanto quelle liturgiche o le occasioni che le hanno determinate. Sono qui analizzati gli imponenti cicli delle Cantate, gli Oratori, le Passioni, le Messe e via via tutte le composizioni sacre e profane, vocali e strumentali fino a culminare nelle grandiose costruzioni dell'Offerta musicale e dell'arte della fuga. Prima parte di un'opera che non ha paragoni nel panorama editoriale internazionale per ampiezza della documentazione, serietà dell'analisi e completezza d'informazione, questo volume prende in considerazione la prima fase della vita e dell'opera di Bach sino a tutto il periodo di Kòthen (1685-1723). Prima di affrontare la parte biografica e critica, l'Autore si sofferma tuttavia lungamente sulla fonti della conoscenza bachiana, sull'opera degli allievi e dei copisti, sul fenomeno della cosiddetta Bach-Renaissance in atto da circa duecento anni, mentre una cospicua trattazione viene riservata alle origini e allo sviluppo della musica evangelica e della liturgia luterana, all'individuazione delle strutture proprie della società musicale tedesca nell'età barocca, all'inquadramento storico generale e al complesso panorama dei membri della famiglia Bach. A questo fa seguito un secondo volume interamente dedicato agli anni di Lipsia 1723-1750.

He met the Impressionists through his boyhood friend Emile Zola and exhibited with them in 1874 and 1877. For a long time Cezanne's paintings which were invariably rejected by the Salon jury were bought only by a few people. Because of this from 1881 he lived in seclusion in Aix-en-Provence.
